Chioma Asielue

Student Senate voted 11-1 not to impeach Senator Chioma Asielue during its weekly meeting after the Constitutional Court issued an opinion recommending her impeachment.

An opinion from the Court read by Chief Justice Nathan Cronin recommended that Asielue be impeached after she failed to attend a mandatory senator training on Oct. 23. The opinion stated that Asi-

elue worked that morning from midnight to 8 a.m. and had a church service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

She told Cronin that, because of this, she would be unable to attend the training.

Cronin gave Asielue religious exemption for the time she was at church but told her that she would need to come to the training as soon as her church service was done or else she would have an unexcused absence.

“I honestly did try to put the training in my schedule, and it wasn’t feasible,” Asielue said. “I really do care about what we do here as senators, and I understand that being at training is not a good example of that. But I have a responsibility to myself first as a human and I chose to prioritize my heath first because if I am to do anything in the Senate, I have to be well enough to function.”

Student Senate bylaws state that absences are only excused for “family obligations, illness, CSC functions (excluding intramurals or social events), and employment-related absences.” Senators that have two unexcused absences are brought before the Court and face impeachment.

This was not the first time Asielue had an unexcused absence.

On Sept. 13, she missed a Senate meeting, and the Court issued an order that she must follow Student

Senate bylaws and attend all mandatory meetings in the future.

Senators were told about the training three weeks, which some senators said was plenty of time for Asielue to plan accordingly for.

However, Senator Natalie Boyd thought differently and defended Asielue.

“No one else was expected to change our work hours,” Boyd said.

“We don’t know everyone’s financial situation and we can’t expect people to take an eight hour shift off to come to a meeting. And while I understand that she could’ve had someone take her shift I don’t think we should be the ones to judge whether or not she should have to give up that shift.”

CAB voted in three new members of the executive board during its meeting, filling its vacant positions.

Elhman Zeinuddin, senior of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, stepped down from her role as CAB chair and returned to the vice chair of programming position.

Senator McKenna Juhlin, junior of Crawford, was voted in as the new CAB chair. She

will step down from her position as a senator of BMS to take on the new position.

Another senator, Isna Patel, senior of Chadron, also resigned from her position as senator at large to fill the CAB vice chair of relations position.

Along with filling the executive board, CAB welcomed a new adviser. Tishina Mindemann, teaching, learning and professional education center instructional technology and design specialist, is taking over for previous adviser Deena Kennell.

Student Senate holds Fire Pit Town Hall

On Tuesday, the Fire Pit Committee held a fire pit project town hall in the Student Center in attempts to spread information and get student’s opinions on the project.

Senators were given packets full of information regarding the project and some of the big questions surrounding it. Some decisions were set it stone, such as using natural

gas as fuel, while others, like what times the fire pit would be operational, are still up in the air. The fire pit would be maintained by the college and the college would assume liability as soon as it would be completed.

A fact sheet handed out at the event said that Senate plans on having the project completed by fall 2022, but an exact date has not been confirmed.

At its Oct. 11 meeting, Student Senate decided that it would have a final decision on the fire pit by Nov. 15.

When will women catch a break?

B

eing a woman, I have always heard and heeded the stories about how dangerous it can be to go out. I’m not even old enough to drink legally and I know the rules.

Number one: never leave your drink unattended and make sure you are paying attention to it at all times.

Number two: don’t accept drinks from anyone.

Number three: if you leave your drink unattended, you don’t drink it when you come back, you pour it out.

And possibly most important is number four: never leave your friend behind or leave them in any type of potentially dangerous situation.

These are the rules that women have to worry about whenever they go out. We can’t just decide to actually take it easy and not worry because if we aren’t worried about those things we might be told that we should have been more careful when something

goes wrong.

Women don’t get to have a fun night out with no worries because even when we take care of ourselves and follow all of these rules there’s always something else.

Women have thought of all these rules to keep ourselves and our friends safe, but it turns out no matter how hard we try to be safe people are trying just as hard to make it dangerous. If you aren’t a woman, you may not have heard but there is a new way that people have been getting roofied.

Instead of trying to get women to drink something that has been tampered with, people are now being roofied by injections.

An increasing amount of women have been reporting not remembering their nights after not drinking much at all and then finding a puncture mark somewhere on their body in the morning.

Columbine, Sandy Hook and Virginia Tech, national tragedies, resulting in a total of 71 deaths.

These incidents are still making headlines as the memories of the victims are honored.

But that’s only three of 1,857 school shootings since 1970 and 71 of 621 deaths caused by the use of guns on a school campuses.

So far in 2021 there have been 205 incidents involving guns on school campuses, that is the most ever recorded in one year and there are still two months of school left this year.

But no one is talking about it.

Despite the growing rates of school violence on both college

campuses and k-12 schools, I haven’t seen much in the news about it, most of the shootings barely made local news.

Threats of shootings and bombings are happening to schools in the U.S. everyday even some close to home.

But no one is talking about it.

South Dakota School of Mines evacuated Friday after threat was made that there were bombs placed in several of the buildings.

But no one is talking about it.

Almost everyone I know has had a threat of a shooter or bomb or had an incident occur while in high school or college. As a student the thought of being killed by a shooter or having a friend or sibling killed is always in the back of my mind.

But no one is talking about it.

Schools have evacuation plans,

When you’re in a building or classroom discussions come up of what you would do if a shooting would happen right now.

But no one is talking about it.

Parents, grandparents, sibling

and friends of over 600 students have grieved over those lost in school gun violence.

So, let’s talk about it.

Let’s make every school shooting, every threat a national issue.

Let’s talk about when, where and how school shootings are happening.

Let’s talk about how 43% of the shooters were students attending the school and 19.9% are done by people who have no relation to the school.

Let’s change how we handle fighting and bullying. With 38% of school gun issues classified as an escalation of disputes, they could have been prevented.

Let’s talk more about children’s access to weapons. Even if this just decreases the amount of accidents in elementary schools, when young children bring a gun

to show and tell.

Let’s talk about how 36.9% of gunmen fled and then were apprehended and 26% of them fled and escaped.

As students, sibling and future parents of children, we need to talk about school violence and not just when the death toll is high and not only when its young children.

We should be demanding change, so that future generations don’t have to worry about being shot while getting an education. So that school days don’t have to be spent on training students on how to run, hide and defend themselves.

And just in case you haven’t heard them, here are just a few of the names of victims of school gun violence in 2021, Daylon Burnett, 15, Kayden Bauswell, 15, William Belamy, 18 and Aarron Wiggins, 26.

When we are little, we got naps and recess during school. We get snacks and laughs. Lots of games and toys.

As we get older the laughs grow shorter, the naps become secret, and the recess disappears.

Even though it is scientifically proven older kids and teenagers due better with brain food, a quick nap, or even a brain break schools don’t implement any of these ideas to help their students learn.

I think it is very important that schools start learning that the body and brain is growing so they need a little break from eight hours in a desk.

Because schools do not under-

stand this need, most young adults cannot wait to get to college, so they do not have to sit for so long and they get a break between classes.

A kid’s brain cannot process so much information at once.

According to many neuroscientists kids use selective attention when they are getting a lot of attention at once. Selective attention is when their attention focuses on what they think is important and their brain ignores what it thinks is unimportant.

They do this by picking out many of the ‘important’ words in the flow of sentences and the things that stand out to their senses. Then they protect them from being overrun from other thing.

Students can try to avoid interferences like text messages, but this is hard as a younger adult es-

pecially in a school system.

Especially because when you are a young adult everything can be an interference. A rumbling tummy, a bad mood, or even something like being too cold.

After sitting in a desk for so long you start getting bored and your brain starts looking for a distraction to keep you entertained.

Something like doodling, playing on your phone, or annoying your teacher.

These usually result in an interference with whatever a student needs to do in class.

This problem could be solved if there were not long periods of time with kids sitting in a desks being bored.

I know that teachers work hard on their plans and they try to plan every minute with as much learning as possible, but how much learning can they do if you have a child who is tired and bored in your class.

Teachers have the most important job in the world.

They touch the hearts of children and inspire them to be better and become the future. However, teachers can not do that if the child is too tired, bored, or hungry

to pay any attention.

Without teachers we would not have anyone else. No doctors, lawyers, or welders. This is not the teacher’s fault.

The school system wants eight hours in a desk with words spit at the kids hoping the kids absorb it, but kids do not absorb it like they want them to.

It is so easy to do snacks during class, or a 20-minute nap break I mean how many minutes are wasted in school trying to get a child to focus anyways, so instead spend those minutes taking a nap.

I mean you can walk into any high school or middle school class and say hey let’s go have a recess and they would all be stoked.

Then when they get back into to class, they just ran out all their jitters, so they are ready to focus.

It is a win-win.

“Hereditary” should not be watched alone  By Adeline Beason Staff Editor

For Halloween, I did a movie marathon. Yet, for all the predictable screams and screeching violins, one movie went above and beyond: “Hereditary.”

Directed by horror newbie Ari Aster, “Hereditary” chronicles the unraveling of the Graham family as they learn about their dark ancestry after their hermit grandmother’s death. Unlike traditional horror movies, “Hereditary” uses occasional scares and frequent low lighting to trick the viewer into thinking a “monster” is there.

The setting is reminiscent of a doll-house, each room depicted as a cross-section rather than a full space.

This reminds the audience that, try as they might, the Graham family are being manipulated like dolls and have no control over the situation.

At first, the evil forces controlling the characters are dismissed to mental illness, the product of grief after grandma’s funeral. However, as we watch “freak” accidents grow in both frequency and gore, it is obvious that this is just a facade.

Annie, the mother, appears to grow more and more deluded throughout the movie, but after a second viewing,

I realized that she had in fact caught on to the truth and was only trying to save her doomed family. As a viewer, you struggle to find a character to root for because it becomes impossible to tell who is good and who is evil. In this way, “Hereditary” creates a sense of discomfort and dread rather than the cheap jump-scares of its counterparts.

I found it hard to sleep after watching but not because I was afraid of the dark, but because I felt guilty for having witnessed something so disturbing.

If you are a fan of slasher flicks, “Hereditary” might be the film that expands your horizon. While there is plenty of gore and violence, it is always coupled with context that makes you think critically about what is happening.

This may sound like a bore, but it is well worth it for the under-your-skin lingering fear this movie will leave you with. The strategic lighting, set and character design leaves room for your imagination to fill in the gaps (perhaps with something even scarier) without taking away from the plot.

That said, this movie is not for the faint of heart. It was directed by Ari Aster, creator of (now infamous) “Midsommar,” one of the most frightening films of the decade. If you are thinking of adding it to your horror movie watchlist, make sure to bring a friend.

USDA studies Romanov genetics u By Alexa Johnson USDA Communication Specialist Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of the most unique breeds in the world! The Romanov breed, a Russian breed, that has unique characteristics in the sheep industry.

Romanov lambs are born with a black hair coat with white wool growing in as the sheep age. When mature, the breed is a mottled gray, white and black due to the black undercoat with a predominantly black head. Romanov sheep are a medium-framed breed with ewes averaging about 100-150 pounds and the rams 150-180 pounds. The ewes are excellent mothers that produce high volumes of milk for their lambs. But this is where they are VERY unique and of great interest to the sheep industry; Romanov ewes are highly fertile, almost always give birth to three or more lambs when mature. Often, ewes have four or five lambs per birth and occasionally more, with one ewe giving birth to nine! Wow! Romanov ewes can easily raise two or three lambs, and any more than that are cared for in a nursery.

Romanov research at USMARC has been conducted for over 30 years and there have been many remarkable findings. Today, I will share a few of the highlights. As I reported earlier, the Roma-

nov breed excels as a maternal breed with increased fertility and a lack of seasonality breeding issues associated with other breeds of sheep. However, the large number of lambs born requires much more intensive labor than most sheep producers desire or can accommodate. And, while the Romanov breed is very prolific these sheep do not excel in other important areas for the sheep industry, such as growth, lean meat yield, or behavior. To address these issues while capturing maximum value from the Romanov breed, Dr. Kreg Leymaster led several crossbreeding studies to evaluate how to optimize the amazing fertility and maternal ability in a crossbred or “composite” population. Consequently, the Romanov breed is now the main genetic contributor to the USMARC Composite IV (C-IV), which is 1/2 Romanov, ¼ White Dorper, and ¼ Katahdin. Based on comprehensive discussions with sheep industry stakeholders, the White Dorper and Katahdin breeds were selected to best compliment the Romanov breed in the C-IV population.

More recently, research by Drs. Brad Freking and Tom Murphy at USMARC better defined the contributions of the three breeds included in the USMARC C-IV breed. Their research showed that the White Dorper crossed to the Romanov produced significantly more lambs per ewe exposed in both barn lambing and pasture lambing situations when compared to four other breeds also crossed with Romanov. The White Dorper breed contributed superior growth and lean meat yield. The popular breed, Katahdin, further contributes to growth, parasite resistance, and hoof health and attracted the attention of the producers across the U.S. Further research is now focused on preventing mastitis infection, and improving udder quality, pneumonia resistance, and behavioral characteristics – Romanovs tend to be a bit skittish and are more difficult to manage than other breeds. In addition

to matching the C-IV to high-growth and heavy muscled rams, or terminal sires, to maximize the value of the lambs produced for market. The C-IV is now being adopted by the sheep industry and is a valuable genetic resource for the sheep industry.

Prior to importing the Romanov breed, USMARC first evaluated exotic Finnsheep for projects looking at prolificacy. A project looking at the relative performance of crossbred ewes for production efficiency traits proved to establish the superiority of Finnsheep and Romanov breeds above other breeds, such as Dorset, Texel, and Montadale, as maternal or ewe breeds. Looking closer, scientists documented that the Romanov outperformed the Finnsheep in four general categories of traits: lamb survival, percentage lambing, number born per ewe lambing, and length of seasonal fertility, so the Finn Sheep was not considered for further research at the time.

A third project completed at USMARC using the Romanov and Rambouillet breeds showed the uniqueness of the Romanov ewe. Figure 1 shows a Rambouillet ram mated with Romanov ewes and vice versa. As you can see in the top right photo, the Romanov ewes lambed three to four lambs compared to the Rambouillet ewes having either one or two lambs per birth.

Interestingly, when both groups of resulting female lambs were followed as breeding replacements there were no differences in lifetime productivity based on how the crossbred Romanov ewe lambs were originally produced. These findings were important because producers can create crossbred Romanov ewes using Romanov rams without needing purebred Romanov females.

CSC men’s wrestling team took down Northeastern Junior College for its first dual of the season, 43-0, winning all of Monday night’s matches with five pins in the Chicoine Center.

“They’re out there and when the other team doesn’t score and doesn’t win a match, including the extra matches, obviously that’s exciting to see that,” Brett Hunter, head men’s wrestling coach, said. “I’m excited where they are at right now. We know where their shape is, we know where the technique is.”

Two of the ten dual matches and three of the four exhibition matches were won with pins by the Eagles.

Dean Neff, redshirt freshman of Jefferson, Wisconsin, started off his second year as an Eagle in the varsity 165-pound weight class and pinned Plainsman Vince Beeson, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, at the last second of the first period.

“It was good because it was my first varsity start,” Neff said. “It’s just nice feeling that all the work you put in is starting to pay off and starting to show.”

He said that he also felt Coach Hunter did a great job on preparing the entire team for the first dual.

All three of the 285-pound weight class bouts, varsity and exhibitions, were won by falls. Mason Watt, redshirt junior of Broomfield, Colorado, pinned his opponent Riley Butt, freshman of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, with 13 seconds left in the second period, earning six points for the Eagles, and finishing the team’s sweeping win over the Plainsmen.

“He’s (Watt) just one of those guys that continues to work hard,”

As winter approaches, the start of migration season begins for some of Nebraska’s bird species.

Over 40% of the world’s birds migrate, with the Northern Hemisphere containing the majority of them.

North America is split into four migration flyways used by birds, including the Pacific, Central, Mississippi and Atlantic. Nebraska falls into the Central.

When bird migrations start is not always predictable, but the drivers are believed to be lower temperatures, food supply deficiencies and genetic push, according to Cornell Lab. Bird migrations can be split into three categories short, medium and long distance.

Short distance includes the changing of elevations based on season and medium distance includes migrations that are a hundreds of miles.

Long distance migrations often cover entire countries, like the Whooping Crane migration from Texas to Canada, according to Cornell Lab. Some bird species do not migrate, according to the

Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation, including scavenging prey bird, woodpeckers, owls, game birds, tits, chickadees and corvids, with exceptions within each group.

According to Nebraska Ornithology Union, there are 465 species of birds in Nebraska, 334 of which occur in Dawes County.

Millions of birds will stop in ‘bottleneck’ of the Central Flyway, which includes Nebraska during migratory seasons.

Waterfowl species such as the Whooping Crane, Sandhill Crane, Canada Goose, Trumpeter Swans, Hooded Merganser and Bufflehead, travel the Central Flyway each year, using Nebraska’s wetlands as stopping points, according to Nebraska Audubon Society.

Small bird species, like the Gray Catbird, Plumbeous and some American Robins use Nebraska as breeding grounds and migrate between other states.

Although some bird species like shorebirds began migrating in July. Hawks and warblers begin migrating in September and October through Nebraska.

Waterfowl like Snow Geese and loons, Bald Eagles, gulls, winter finches like Evening Grosbeak and Common Redpoll and American Tree Sparrows began migrating through Nebraska .

Chadron State’s volleyball team has continued to shift players into different positions on the court. With the changes, the Eagles were unable to win any sets, losing both Friday to University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 25-15, 25-23, and 25-15; and Saturday to Colorado State University-Pueblo, 25-13, 25-15, 25-18.

“I thought the girls did a good job of just staying positive through that adversity and trying to come together and make the best out of the situation,” she said. “It’s a difficult thing to have to constantly adjust to things especially in the last minute.”

Chadron State men’s basketball team continues to prepare for the start of its season with an expanded schedule, taking the Eagles to new locations.

“The biggest thing for our team right now is just getting a stronger foundation,” Shane Paben, head men’s basketball coach, said. “We want to build our foundation on rock, not sand. It’s not something we take lightly, and we don’t jump ahead. It’s boring, it’s not fun. But it’ll get us to where we need to be in the long run.”

This year, the team welcomed back seven players from last season, along with six transfers and four freshmen to play a schedule of 30 games including a trip to Puerto Rico over fall break.

The Eagles finished their 2020-21 season with an overall record of 5-8 and a conference record of 5-7, playing 13 games and qualifying for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament. The Eagles lost their first post-season game to Colorado Mesa University, 67-52.

This season, CSC men’s basketball team was ranked 12th of 15 teams with 62 points in the RMAC preseason poll.

Paben said that his returners know his set expectations to step up and be leaders, but he knows that, like many things, is a process.

“Leadership is still learning from mistakes but hopefully they’re learning by trying and doing instead of just sitting back and letting things happen,” he said.

Teddy Parham, Jr., junior of Los Angeles, was one of the Eagles that started every game last year for his first year as an Eagle. He led the team with 68 field goals, 37 three-pointers, 193 points, 13 offensive rebounds and 22 steals.

Leading the team with 462 minutes played, Marcus

Jefferson, junior of Lewisville, Texas, also started all 13 games to hold the lead in free throws made with 27, defensive rebounds with 55, total rebounds with 66 and assists with 52.

Bryant Jefferson, sophomore of Palo Alto, California, started six of the nine games he played, earning 25 points with seven assists and averaging 83.3% on free throws.

Bryant Jefferson said he’s looking forward to a full season after dealing with both COVID-19 restrictions and having joined the team at the semester.

Brady Delimont, senior of Ainsworth; CJ Jennings, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado; KJ Harris, junior of McKinney, Texas; and Gage Delimont, redshirt freshman of Ainsworth, have all returned for another year in the Eagle uniform.

Paben said that the new players have came in and they have a good attitude and they’re listening a trying.

“They do get a little frustrated, faster than even me about how things aren’t clicking as fast as they want to,” Paben said. “Which is good, that means they have a competitive spirit. But I’m not trying to force them to know everything in the first month of the season and just going through the process of learning and they just need to get more reps and keep on developing.”

Basketball games for the men’s team start at home.

The first game is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12, against Texas A&M International University, followed by a game Saturday, Nov. 13, against Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Paben said that the team has been able to see their flaws and where they can improve through scrimmages since their focus is themselves.

“Our main focus leading up to the season is just focusing on ourselves and perfecting what we do,” Bryant Jefferson said. “We haven’t really talked much about other teams, Coach Paben just wants us to really understand and perfect the little things as we head into the first game.”

CSC women’s basketball doubles its roster u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

With a 2020-21 season without any wins, Chadron State women’s basketball team doubled its roster, having officially began its season Wednesday.

“They’ve all been doing a good job and they realize that they (the returners) have to compete to stay on the court,” Janet Raymer, head women’s basketball coach, said. “I think that it’s a good transition for them because the team gets along so well, and they compete every day in practice.”

Raymer said that some transfers have hit the ground running while freshman are still adjusting but making some strides.

The team now has 22 on its roster, unlike last year with a team of 11 players. There are seven returners, five transfers and 10 freshmen.

Raymer said that she’s happy about all seven of the returners this year; they’ve stepped up and been through a lot already.

“The arrival of some talent, some hard work, good character has been positive for them and I think refreshing,” she said.

Jori Peters, junior of Mitchell, was a starter for all 13 games last year. She led the Eagles in many categories like playing 459 minutes and averaging 35.3 minutes per game. Peters also led with 50 field goals and 125 points and was 2020-21 Omaha

World-Herald All-Nebraska NCAA DII Honorable Mention.

“Our team is putting in a lot of extra time to make sure we are ready for the season,” Peters said. “I have worked all through the off season on my shooting and ball handling to make sure I can help the team be successful.”

Brittni McCully, redshirt junior of Mullen, was another Eagle who started every game to play 370 minutes, and had 51 points and 35 rebounds.

Olivia Waufle, freshman of Thornton, Colorado, played in all 13 games and started eight. She led the team with 57 total rebounds, 12 offensive and 45 defensive.

Chadron State’s football team’s offense took many hits against Colorado School of Mines and faced troubles moving down the field in the first half, and only scored in the fourth quarter to lose, 34-7.

“We came out and we didn’t execute very well at the beginning and by doing that we couldn’t get in a rhythm,” Jay Long, head football coach, said. “You got to go out and you got to play four full quarters and we didn’t. We didn’t start off the game like we needed to and that was what resulted in giving them so many points in the beginning.”

Despite having seven completed passes of 14 in the first half, Chadron State had 48 total yards to Colorado Mines’ 246 yards, keeping the Eagles to their side of the 50-yard line for the first half.

Dalton Holst, graduate of Gillette, Wyoming, managed a few plays with Colorado Mines’ defensive pressure, but was still sacked eight times for a loss of 41 total yards.

“It’s hard to run on them (Colorado Mines) and then our pass game, things weren’t clicking the first half,” Holst said. “I definitely missed some throws, and we

missed some opportunities that hurt us in the first half.”

Holst completed 19 total throws to his receivers for 198 yards, while the Eagles’ rushing game was limited to 16 net yards.

Long said the positive of the game was the second half and he felt the guys went out and played football against one of the top teams in the country.

Dorian Collier, freshman of Tallahassee, Florida, started the Eagles’ drive to the end zone with a 37-yard punt return, placing the ball at the Orediggers’ 45-yard line with nearly a minute left of the third.

The first play of the fourth quarter was a sack, losing six yards. Despite the hit, Cole Thurness, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, received a seven-yard pass from Holst to put points on the board for CSC. “Cole Thurness always does a good job giving our offense a spark when he needs to, whether it’s running the ball or catching the ball,” Holst said. “He had a good touchdown grab and a few big catches in the second half when we needed them.”

Ahlonte Hair, sophomore of Live Oak, Florida, pulled in two catches for a total of 29 yards in a drive down the field for the Eagles with under two minutes left of the game.

Eagle seniors will play their last home game at noon, Saturday for Senior Day against Western Oregon University.

Ashayla Powers, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, debuted as an Eagle last season, playing all games. She was second for scoring with 32 field goals at a .391% and had 25 free throws for the team’s highest free throw percentage of .781.

Peters said that she’s excited to play with her fellow returners and that the leadership and positivity they all bring “makes every day of playing basketball a great one.”

The women’s basketball team is currently scheduled for 29 games unlike its previous season of 13 games, and CSC finished 14th of 15 teams for the Rocky Moutain Athletic Conference preseason poll with 25 points.

“I’m excited to get closer to normal,” Raymer said. “It’s still not going to be quite normal, but it’ll be a lot closer than it was a year ago. Just kind of knowing more of what to expect, there’s still a possibility of cancellations but at this point it’s not going to be as high as it was a year ago.”

The Eagle’s first game was an exhibition game Wednesday night against Colorado State University but they lost 78-43.

“It’s now or never really,” Raymer said. “I’m excited for it, I know the girls are. It’s a good time to get it done and see where we are at. Ready or not.”

The Eagles play their next game against Texas A&M-Kingsville, starting at 3 p.m., Nov. 12 in Kingsville.

Shifting to the backrow over the weekend was Skylar Sullivan, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, who wore the libero jersey over the weekend and led the Eagles Friday with her season high of 15 digs. Saturday, Sullivan tied with Rylee Greiman, junior of Windsor, Colorado, with 12 digs.

“Skylar Sullivan was one of those players that I thought really stepped up,” Allie Ferguson, sophomore of Chadron, said. “Playing libero is a huge role and I thought she handled it very well. She stayed composed and really showed her hustle and heart.”

CSC’s backrow defense totaled nearly 50 digs each night, with 46 digs Friday and 45 digs Saturday.

Greiman was a leader Friday with nine kills, an ace and six digs. She also had five kills Saturday.

Ferguson was able to reach five season highs over the weekend with one assist and 13 digs on Friday along with 11.5 points, three aces and a block on Saturday.

“It was such a great feeling reaching so many career highs this weekend,” Ferguson said. “At the beginning of the year, coach (Stadler) told me my main role was to always be ready to come off the bench at any moment, so having the opportunity this weekend to consistently play in the rotations and step up and show what I could do was such a great experience.”

Amelia Berg, senior of Fort Collins, Colorado, missed Friday’s game but returned Saturday with nine kills and six digs, while Audrey Bennett, freshman of Lenexa, Kansas, led the Eagles with 24 assists Friday and 20 assists Saturday.

Stadler said that it’s hard to ask players to do something they weren’t expecting to do but she’s glad for the depth of their roster to feel slightly comfortable when players have needed to be shifted to a different position on the court.

“I thought that was just really good to see their heart, a little bit of their passion, a little bit of that competitive grit,” Stadler said. “I really appreciate that although our season isn’t going exactly the way that we had hoped it would go, they’re still coming out every game and giving their all.”

The Eagles play their final home games at 6 p.m., Friday against Colorado Mesa and 4 p.m., Saturday against Westminster. Saturday’s game, Senior Night, will recognize the seniors for their final home game in Chicoine Center.
