Dalton Holst, graduate of Gillette, Wyoming, outthrew Chadron State College’s career passing yards record and scored half of the Eagles’ touchdowns to win over New Mexico Highlands University, 46-16, Saturday in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

“Dalton’s the epitome of what I feel a quarterback

should be,” Jay Long, head football coach, said. “As soon as he got it (the record), the first thing he did was give the credit to his team and he’s very modest.

He’s been a terrific football player for us.”

Holst threw 235 yards against the Cowboys to take Chadron State’s career passing yards record with 10,268 yards, passing John McLain’s old record of 10,115 yards.

Student court overturns Senator’s impeachment In appeal hearing Tuesday, court also orders a retrial in Senate v. Jones  By Aubrie Lawrence Editor-in-Chief

The Student Constitutional Court handed the Student Senate a blow Tuesday night when it overturned its impeachment of Senator Sullivan Jones and ordered a retrial.

In delivering the court’s ruling, Chief Justice Nathan Cronin stated Jones is to be reinstated as senator of liberal arts and that he may present evidence and witnesses during the retrial.

The Court also said that petitioners may not submit any new evidence.

“What Senate did was a travesty,” Jones said while presenting his appeal. “The Court has a chance to make sure something like this never happens again. Senate has to follow our constitution, they have to. They have to be held accountable for that.”

In a seven-page, single-spaced appeal to the Court, Jones claimed last week’s impeachment trial lacked due process,

lacked cause and lacked a notice of charges. He also claimed there was no merit to the charges submitted by the 10 petitioners– Sens. Kelsey Crock, Olivia Bryant, Sarah Hough, McKenna Juhlin, Colton Brienza, Bryan Zutavern, Emmanuella Tchona, Hannah Pfeifly, Isna Patel, and Cooper Reichman.

On Wednesday, Crock, Juhlin, Tchona and Brienza simply said “no comment” about the Court’s findings.

Zutavern, however, was more open.

“I was happy to see Senator Jones’ appeal his impeachment,” he said. “While I did sign the Sullivan Jones petition, I chose to vote against his impeachment when the time came to vote. I am hopeful that the decision made during general assembly will be reversed in this upcoming meeting.”

Reichman, who voted for impeachment, apparently had a change of heart.

“I am glad that Senator Sullivan (Jones) will have the opportunity to be back in Student Senate,” he said. “I feel that the events of the last couple of weeks will open up some discussion for all Senators to become better mediators and not think of

things in a black-and-white aspect. It is not us against each other, but rather, us facing a problem or miscommunication.”

Bryant, who voted in favor of impeaching Jones, said she was unable to attend Tuesday’s hearing because of other commitments. Consequently, she said she could not “in good conscience” comment on the appeal trial.

In his appeal, Jones also claimed that “illegal evidence saturated the impeachment.” Rather than presenting evidence of an “impeachable offense,” he said the petitioners put his character on trial before peers, faculty, and

the public.

Jones’ appeal further claimed the Court, which oversaw the Senate trial, abused its authority when it “forced” Senator Makenna Metzler, who has a personal relationship with Jones, to “abstain from the impeachment vote” on Sept. 27.

In rendering the Court’s decision, Cronin said the opinion of the court will be given to the senators at Monday’s Senate meeting, and the retrial will take place then.

Marker assassins takeover Homecoming weekend u By Olivia Bryant

Once a student has marked their assigned person, the target is eliminated from the game.

The assassin then takes the elimated students target and works to elimate them.

The assassins are limited to where they can mark their targets. Off limit areas are known as “safe zones”, these include; bathrooms, classrooms, sports practices, work and meetings. Assassins can mark their targets any other time on campus.

“I am hoping this event will be very fun but also competitive during homecoming week,” Cooper Reichman, 20, junior of Chappell, said. “I am looking forward to it, adding some fun roleplaying and hopefully make some fun memories for the ‘assassins’ here on campus.”

The top five students with the most marked targets at the end of the week will receive a prize.

Prizes include a Bose Bluetooth Speaker, Eddie Bauer Backpack, Instant Pot, portable charger, and a Roku Express streaming player.

The competition will end noon on Friday or when there is only one person left uneliminated.

Over 25 students gathered in The Hub Monday night to become homecoming week “assassins” in a weeklong Residence Life Association (RLA) event, Marker Assassins.

‘Assassins started off by having their photos taken with a polaroid camera and going over the game rules. Students were treated to cookies and punch during a presentation of the rules.

After the presentation, each participant was assigned a random student as a “target” and given the target’s picture.

The competition officially began 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The goal of the game is to mark the assigned target on the back of their neck with a marker, eliminating them from the game. Students must do this while avioidng their ‘assassin’. Students will not be penalized for marking the wrong target.

RLA releases haircut room petition  By Teddy Parham Jr Reporter

Haircuts are an essential part of most people’s lives and the relationship a client has with their barber is special. Every barber is different, and every barbershop has its pros and cons. Unfortunately, there is a limited number of barbershops here in Chadron and a very small number of barbers who deal with ethnic hair.

As a result, CSC students have been getting haircuts from a student on campus who deals with ethnic hair and has worked in a barbershop during the previous summer.

Naishaun Jernigan, 20, junior of Springfield, Massachusetts, has taken it upon himself to be a Barber for the students here at CSC. He mostly cuts the hair of student-athletes but is open to cut anyone’s hair.

As word got around about him and his services, CSC Residence Life Association

have come together to talk about a petition to get a dedicated room for haircuts to take place for both men and women.

Gabriel Perez, student affairs project coordinator, is heading the haircut petition.

“Ted brought up the idea to us in a meeting and was looking for suggestions for a space on campus for haircuts to be given, “she said.

The only conflict was that the haircuts can’t be charged as a business so no money exchange could happen. She also said that in the meeting most questions revolved around cleaning and maintaining the room such as who will clean it, how often, and who would have access to the room.

At the moment, the petition is not up for voting yet, but is in the process.

“I have a time set up with Sam Parker soon to talk about the petition and get it

moved along to be ready to vote,” said Perez.

“Within the area, we don’t have a lot of places that support African American hair or ethnic hair,” she said.

“There is a significant difference between going to the barbershop in town and being able to utilize people or have people who know how to do different types of hair. We can see this petition as one small step to increasing diversity in the community.”

Perez said that if students were interested in seeing this petition become a reality on campus, to feel free to visit her office in The Hub. “Don’t be afraid to stop by, we’d love to help and if they want to they can bring their ideas to anyone on the RLA committee, myself, Ted, Austin Stevens, and Sam Parker,” she said. “We can talk about it and see what we can do.”

As fall settles in, CSC will begin collecting donations for the Fall Fund Drive starting Oct. 12.

The drive allows area business owners, CSC faculty and staff members to donate to towards scholarship funds that will help students succeed.

The money given to the drive is used to help bring students into the community and help them flourish once they’ve come.

The theme “Giving Toward Success” largely speaks towards how the drive is done and what it does.

Last year with the help of over 100 volunteers, the campus and community more than $100,000 was invested to help ensure the success of CSC students.

It’s time for the pettiness to end “Democracy only works with mutual respect and compromise.”

A

s young adults, we’ve been dodging the petty antics of grown-up politicians who have devolved civil debate into cat fights. When we came to college, we’d hoped that our student politicians would take the lead in creating positive change.

But after witnessing the months long debate about the fire pit and last week’s impeachment trial of Senator Sullivan Jones, it’s clear that they’re mimicking the mistakes of the grownups.

And maybe that is for the best. After all, there isn’t any better way to prepare us for the ‘real’ world then do what the grown-ups do rather than what they say. Why give us false hopes that political pettiness will stop once we leave school.

We thought we were supposed to be learning from the generations that have come before us.

But it’s clear we were wrong.

In the impeachment trial of Senator Sullivan Jones, several senators complained he was making the Senate look bad in-person and in an opinion article in the Sept. 16 edition of The Eagle. They argued that was a sound reason to remove him but presented no evidence of wrongdoing.

They didn’t like him, so they impeached him.

Apparently, it has not occurred to the majority that by holding an impeachment trial with little preparation and no evidence, the senators are making themselves look bad. And if it did, why was the trial pushed through so quickly?

In a trial, prosecutors who are the accusers prepare – thoroughly.

It’s apparent that level of care was not taken in Jones’ case.

As they clung to their reasons for Jones’ removal, in the end, the senators ran in circles. They committed the very sins they accused Jones of, and proved he wasn’t the only guilty party.

Despite their continuous claims that they were not impeaching Jones because of his

opinions, it failed to look that way. In the trial, they presented no firm evidence that would prove otherwise.

The arguments thrown around the room that night – “he’s creating a toxic environment;” “creating mistrust;” - resembled those of high school cliques when they want to rid themselves of someone they don’t like.

That makes us cringe.

The Eagle has covered Student Senate for many years. We have watched senators come and go and documented countless debates.

But nothing like this.

That said, to their credit have never seen senators tas concerned with what the student body wants as those holding seats today. Most are willing to jump through hoops to benefit the student body. They don’t hold their seats for their own personal gain. That is something we are thankful for.

So, what we’ve seen these past few weeks surprises us. It’s time for Senate to drop the pettiness, learn to tolerate differing opinions and get back to the bigger picture – serving their constituents.

All students deserve that.

Recently, a whistleblower came out and made a statement on Facebook and some of the other apps Facebook owns. In her statement she mentions that Instagram was potentially “toxic” to teenage girls.

I would just like to ask, when did you learn that? Because I’m pretty sure most people already knew that. (Thanks for sharing though maybe now something will actually be done.)

Trends alone on Instagram are toxic. Think about the A4 waist trend, girls all over Instagram were trying to make sure their waist could be hidden behind a piece of paper. That’s just one harmful trend off the top of my head, there have been tons more in the history of Instagram.

Even when you stop looking just at the trends on Instagram, the app is still toxic to its users.

The way people post on Instagram alone is toxic. Everyone on Instagram appears to be living their best life or looking their best at all times. This can make people feel like they have to be perfect or seem like they are having the best time at all times.

Posting like that is common on the app and it tricks people- especially teenage girls- into believing that life has to be and look perfect.

Expecting life to be perfect and believing that people’s lives are like what you see on Instagram creates harmful and unrealistic expectations.

Follower counts and likes determine your worth on the app and people are willing to do anything for validation on the app, including editing how their bodies look.

I know more than a few girls

Velvet Jessen who feel like they need to edit bodies and photos on Instagram to be good enough. But at the end of the day, no one looks like that, not in real life and who can compete with an edited picture.

I still remember the first time that I realized my friends were editing how they looked in photos on Instagram.

I only noticed once they were doing it right in front of me. I mentioned that I didn’t even notice the editing in pictures and they were proud that they could hide edits that well.

We were 14.

No 14-year-old girl should be so worried about how they look that they are editing their pictures online for some misguided validation. My friends played sports year round, their bodies were perfectly healthy. They should have had no reason to think they needed to edit themselves.

It was and still is expected though that you have to pose perfectly and edit yourself to have a good post on Instagram. Anyone with the app could tell you that.

The fact is the internet doesn’t care and neither do the people running the “toxic” apps we use. They don’t care that Instagram pushes unrealistic body standards and oth-

er harmful messages.

They want our money and attention and we give it to them.

No matter how many body positive movements are on Instagram or other apps, there always seems to be just as much hate and negativity. For every body positive account there’s an account with edited waist lines and facetuned selfies.

The point of the app has become showing how cool and interesting you are but only if you look perfect. Of course that’s toxic, life isn’t perfect and it’s unrealistic to believe it is.

So props to the whistleblower, I am glad you said something but I’m just wondering, how long ago did you realize what we all knew? How long did you decide to stay quiet about it before it got to you?

I’ve known for years and so has the majority of Instagram users but hey, welcome to the fight, it doesn’t end.

“Blood is thicker than water.”

How many people have heard this? The answer is probably most of us. This is because the saying has been around since the 12th century.

The thing is the saying has nothing to do with the actual substances itselves. Yes, blood is thicker than water but the quote that we hear isn’t complete.

When people are telling us this quote, they’re only using part of it.

The entire saying is, “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”

This makes people think of different definitions for family. Some say

only blood makes family, others say it is loyalty and love.

First, this quote was made for soldiers. It was made to say that their bloodshed in battle together made them stronger than genetics.

Next the definition of family is one or more parent living together with their children in one unit. This is the actual definition, but I am sure there are many people who would disagree with this definition.

For example, does an aunt or uncle count as a parent to their nieces or nephews, or if a 19-year-old sibling takes on their younger siblings?

With the insanity of current world events constantly influencing media, it’s easy for television to fall into the same pessimistic tropes used by dramas and comedies alike. Apple TV’s series “Ted Lasso” breaks this cycle in the most delightful way, earning the freshman comedy a record breaking 20 Emmy Award nominations and seven wins.

Based on a series of NBC promotional skits, the show depicts an American Football coach who is recruited to coach a Premier Football League Team in England- having no knowledge of soccer whatsoever. The title character, however, doesn’t let this stand in his way. Instead, he uses his upbeat and optimistic demeanor to connect with his players and make them work as a team, giving them lessons that expand out of the training

room and into their lives.

Ted’s positivity reaches characters and audiences alike. From the icy club owner, Rebbecca, to the grumpy team captain, Roy, this show gives viewers characters we want to root for. They feel like real people that audiences can connect with.

It’s these portrayals that earned the cast seven acting nominations and wins in three of the four acting categories: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

After such a whirlwind of a year, “Ted Lasso” is the perfect show to both liven and enlighten the spirits of everyone in need of a little positivity. Nebraska Angus Association visits CSC u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag & Range Editor

Nebraska Angus Association visited Chadron State College as a part of their two-day tour of Western Nebraska, on Oct. 1.

The Angus Association was led by Margo Lehh, secretary and manager of the organization.

The group started with a tour of CSC’s Range Complex and rodeo practice arena, led by Professor Ron Bolze and Adjunct Faculty James O’Rouke. The tour started with a history lesson of CSC’s rangeland management program, followed by summaries of each of the rangeland management comprehensions.

The group was able to see the classrooms and the outside area that is used for studies, which Bolze referred to as a “living laboratory.”

Bolze spoke highly about the rangeland management program and noted that the program is one of the largest in the country.

“Disregarding Texas A&M, we are the largest range program in the country,” Bolze said. “We have about 128 students.”

Following the tour, Angus Association members attended dinner in CSC’s ballroom, where four presenters spoke.

Jack Whittier, spoke about technologies in animal agriculture, how they were developed and his expectations for the future of animal agriculture.

His presentation started with discussions about corn yield production spikes in the 1940s compared to production today. He mentioned how cat - Jack Whittier tle efficiency has increased and how less cattle are needed to feed more people.

Whittier touched on agriculture advocacy and the decreasing number of people who are in agriculture production.

“There are fewer and fewer people who understand our way of life,” Whitter said.

Whitter discussed technologies including, sexed semen, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and estrus cycle manipulation.

Paul Dykstra, representing Certified Angus Beef was the next to speak, sharing the 10 carcass specifications that are required for certification.

These 10 requirements are modest or higher marbling, medium to fine marbling texture, cattle younger than 30 months old and A-maturity lean, 10-16 square inch ribeye area, maximum 1,050 pound carcass weight, maximum 1 inch fat thickness, superior muscling, free of capillary rupture, no dark cutters and no neck humps over 2 inches. Cattle must be at least part Angus with over 50% black coat.

Dykstra spoke about marbling being the biggest limiting factor in brand acceptance, noting marbling is a heritable trait. It can be bred for, but is influenced by factors after birth.

“Marbling is a highly heritable trait,” Dykstra said. “We also need to head the fact that marbling is a lifetime event.”

The third speaker of the night was Levi Landers from the American Angus Association. He spoke about the long term objective for American Angus Association.

He also discussed Angus verified premiums and how to qualify for those premiums. Requirmens include birth and breeding records, vaccination records, weaning and castrating, proper tagging, good animal husbandry and the ranchers ability to work cattle calmly.

Benefits with being apart of this program include genetic history and premiums when selling cattle, according to Landers.

Rick Pfortmiller gave the last presentation titled “Genomic testing as a risk management tool”.

He gave a brief history of genetic studies in animal agriculture and genomic testing, which began to take off in 2009.

Pfortmiller discussed the importance of genomics in improving the accuracy of expected progeny differences (EPD).

Pfortmiller spoke about the importance of genomics in the future of the beef industry specifically in preventing Bovine Congestive Heat Failure. A disease effecting cattle grazing high altitudes.

He claimed that genomics are becoming more important and pushing the indsutry to the future.

Range Club takes a hike CSC’s Range Club plant identification walk teaches students about common plant species on campus u By Kamryn Kozisek Ag & Range Editor

CSC’s Range Club hosted a “Fun in the Field Plant ID” event Saturday, teaching students common plants to identify around campus.

Students and faculty met in the Nelson Physical Activity Center parking lot and hiked the Harold and LaVerne Thompson Natural History Preserve trails.

Rebekah Pobanz, senior of Grand Island, Range Club president organized the hike which was led by Steve Rolfsmeier.

Pobanz and Roldfsmeier pointed out various plant species along the trail and described those species to the group.

Roldfsmeier discussed the history of Chadron State College’s plant systems and how they have changed overtime.

He shared tricks to identify plants and pointed out plants that can be foraged and used for food.

Also in attendance were CSC Rangeland Proffessor’s Jonathan Spiess and Tony Perlinski, who helped identify various species.

Plant speices identified include, Hoary tansy-aster, plains sunflower, smooth ground-cherry, prairie rose, sand bluestem, threadleaf sedge, prarie junegrass, big bluestem and blue grama.

Attendees were provided with a packet with various plant species and how to identfy them, for

future reference.

Each reference has images of the plant, scientific name and descriptions of leaves, stems and roots.

Pobanz organized the event to help provide the general public with inforamtion on the rangelands around them. ”I think its important for people to what they are looking at, in nature” Pobanz said. “It helps people to have a better appreciation and knowledge for rangeland health.”

Abigail Swanson, graduate of Grand Island said she attended the hike to help her identifiy the species around her.

“I wanted to learn some of the plants that are in the area,” Sawnson said. “ That way I don’t always have to ask my friends when I am walking with them.”

“Honestly, I had no idea that I would even break it this season at all, let alone at home or away,” Holst said. “It does mean a lot as far as an individual, but I played with so many great players and so many great receivers, O-line men, that I really can’t think of it as an individual award because there’s so many other people that were

Someone had mentioned touchdowns to Holst as his next record, but he said that he can’t think about that, instead wanting to focus on wins, great opponents, and to take it one game at a time.

Johnston finished second in the bull riding with 77 points at the Central Wyoming College Rodeo.

Eagles lose to RMAC teams u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

Chadron State’s volleyball team struggled on the road again against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams after another weekend of four-set game loses in Colorado.

“We battled until the very end which is really good to see as a whole,” Jennifer Stadler, head volleyball coach, said. “We’re making a couple errors late in the matches which is not allowing us to close out when we are ahead or when we are within a point or two.”

The Eagles pushed the game to four sets by winning the second set both Friday against Fort Lewis College and Saturday against Western Colorado University, after losing the first. They were unable to continue the battle through the rest of the games, losing the third and fourth sets both days.

Chadron State has fallen to all of its RMAC opponents that it faced while on the road, leaving the team with a record of 3-10.

Despite their losses, the Eagles had strong blocks both days, recording 17 to Fort Lewis’s four and 14 to Western Colorado’s eight.

“I believe that we are doing a lot of things right,” Amelia Berg, senior of Fort Collins, Colorado, said. “We have to be more efficient putting the ball away. We have what

it takes and we have been building on that every week and all of our pieces are coming together.”

Against Fort Lewis, Berg contributed largely to many areas, leading the team with four aces and 15 digs. She had six kills of 23 attacks and five blocks.

On Saturday, Berg also had five blocks and 22 digs.

“Amelia is one of our most consistent players all the way around,” Stadler said.

“She plays six rotations for us and I think she’s just doing a really good job of being consistent in all of the roles and being a leader.”

Amber Harvey led the Eagles both games in kills with 19 of 36 attacks Friday and 13 of 46 attacks Saturday.

Aiyana Fujiyama, had eight of the team’s 17 blocks against Fort Lewis, and against Western Colorado, she had six blocks Saturday and eight kills of 21 attacks.

Rylee Greiman, totaled two aces and 33 digs over the weekend.

CSC returns to the Chicoine Center this weekend at 6 p.m., Friday for Dig Pink Night against New Mexico Highlands University and its homecoming game at 6 p.m., Saturday against Adams State University.

“It’ll be really nice to play at home but also with all the other activities going on it will just hopefully be a really good atmosphere and environment for our players.”

Chadron State College eSports club kicked off its competitions with a “Rocket League” match Sept. 26. They played and lost against Peru State College.

Drew Kurtenbach, eSports competitive lead and vice president, 20, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, said the match was “a tough loss.”

The club also competed in an “Overwatch” match Oct. 4, winning against the University of Akron’s team.

Kurtenbach said that currently, the club is mostly competing at the open level but hopes to break into the varsity level in the near the future.

“A long term goal of ours has been to eventually get it up to a varsity sport level,” Kurtenbach said. “Other schools have already been able to do

that, so I’m hoping to get to that level eventually.”

CSC’s eSports team continues its competition with a “Call of Duty” match against Northwood University at 8 p.m., Thursday.

ESports is open to all students and is looking to increase the number of members and competitors they have. CSC students can contact Kurtenbach at andrew.kurtenbach@eagles.csc.edu to join.

“If you have interest in gaming and want to either meet new people or be able to compete in a fun environment then eSports is definitely for you,” Kurtenbach said.

“We have players of all levels and experience, so you do not have to be some crazy good player just to join. We also provide a social side to just hang out with new people who enjoy gaming. I enjoy both the competitiveness it can bring out and also the companionship. I’ve met some amazing people through eSports and hope to keep doing just that.”

“We had a great hit, and then a great fumble recovery for a touchdown.” Holst said. “It’s a great spark play for all three phases of the game and takes some pressure off the offense to score points. It was a

huge three-phase victory for sure.”

Defensively, Jeremiah Makahununiu, senior of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, had a pick-six with an interception and an 88-yard run with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles now hold a 2-3 record.

Holst said that New Mexico Highlands was a good team, and CSC is still working on putting four full quarters together on offense.

Chadron State’s football team hosts Colorado State University-Pueblo on Elliott Field at 1 p.m., Saturday.

Chadron State College’s Tayle Brink, senior of Reva, South Dakota, had another weekend of strong runs, making it to the short rounds in the goat tying and breakaway roping during the Central Wyoming College Rodeo.

“She’s the anchor on the women’s team,” Dustin Luper, head rodeo coach, said. “She’s not just consistent in one event but a couple events.”

In the breakaway roping, Brink finished fourth with 2.5 seconds after the long go. She averaged 102.5 seconds to finish fifth after missing her calf during the short go.

Brink said she knew she had to be fast in the breakaway roping and she felt like she did exactly what was needed in the first round.

“In the short round, I did not accomplish what I had intended to,” she said. “Everyone else before missed and instead of sticking to my game plan I told myself just catch. In doing that, I lost my aggression and second guessing myself resulting in missing.”

She finished seventh in the goat tying with a 16.2 second average, remaining consistent with a time of 8.1 seconds in both the long and short rounds.

of Maywood, entered bull riding for the first time and finished the weekend second in the bull riding with 77 points. Johnston along with the other two cowboys that made it to the short round were unable to stay on the bull for the qualifying eight seconds.

“He’s (Johnston’s) proven to be pretty good the last few weekends,” Luper said. “For a two-event guy, he’s seeming to do pretty good. He’s got some confidence and I just kind of hope that plays over into this weekend.”

Luper said that the team can get things done in practice, and he always tells them that they are a king in their own house, but you find out what you’re made of when you go somewhere.

“We have yet to put it together when we leave practice and I need them to understand that practice is no different than the rodeo, the only difference is that they clap for you when you’re done.”

CSC rodeo team finishes out their fall season, Oct. 8-10, at the Lamar Community College Rodeo in Colorado.

Brink said she can’t believe we’re already nearing the end of the fall season, even if she knew it would go by fast.

“It’s been really busy and at times stressful, but also very enjoyable,” She said. “I hope to finish this fall season off strong and ready for the spring.”
