Citing the creation of conflict and mistrust in the Student Senate, nine of 14 senators voted to impeach Liberal Arts Senator Sullivan Jones during Monday night’s General Assembly.

Four senators voted against impeachment and one abstained. Jones was ineligible to vote.

senate, retaliated against senators who had differing opinions and spread misinformation in an opinion article published in The Eagle Sept.

Crock read a prepared statement written by several senators. In it, the group acknowledged Jones has a right to free speech, but said he should be more tactful.

“While Senator Jones is free to express his freedom of speech, he should be held to a higher standard as a senator regarding his comments,” the statement said. “As a representative of the Student Senate, Senator Jones must be held accountable for his actions which have directly impacted the Student Senate. Why talk poorly about Senate when you are a part of it? Are you not through association talking poorly about yourself?”

Senator at Large Natalie Boyd claimed Jones’ article was misleading for two reasons: the fire pit would not be easily accessible to all students because of its location and he disclosed undecided information about who would operate the fire pit and when it would operate.

Jones, however, said that this information was strictly his opinion and therefore could not be considered a false or misleading fact.

“You can’t impeach someone for not liking an idea that was expressed,” he said. “A lot of those things that you suggested were false or misleading were a matter of opinion, that’s the simple truth of it.”

Jones said that he had no idea the hearing was taking

place until prior to Monday’s meeting. He said he believes that Senate’s justification behind his impeachment was not constitutionally valid and that it was using personal attacks on his reputation to impeach him.

However, throughout the hearing, senators repeatedly said the reason for the petition to remove Jones was not because he had conflicting views and voiced his opinions, but because he was creating mistrust between the Student Senate and the student body and portraying Student Senate in a negative light.

Student Senate bylaws state that a repre- Sullivan Jones sentative can be removed because of “indications of improprieties in fulfilling official responsibilities.” The Oxford dictionary defines improprieties as failures to observe standards, the use of improper language; bad behavior or character.

“Sully brought up and quoted the constitution about how impropriety is something that can be brought up and we talked about that, impropriety, unprofessionalism, disrespect,” Boyd said. “I understand that Sully wants to represent his constituents, and I think he’s a very passionate person who represents his constituents. However, it’s not

his opinions that are the problem, it’s the manner in which he does it.

“You can’t possibly represent your constituents if you’re creating a terrible working relationship with the people you’re trying to work with to make campus a better place.

You have to maintain those relationships, and if you’re out confronting senators in an intimidating manner outside of meetings, then their voice isn’t heard, so you’re silencing a portion of campus through that.”

However, Boyd and three other senators - Bryan Zutavern, Aidan Anderson-McClintock and Emmanuella Tchona - voted against impeaching Jones.

Nine senators - Olivia Bryant, Isna Patel, Megan Hodgeson, Kelsey Crock, Sarah Hough, Cooper Reichman, Mckenna Juhlin, Chioma Asielue and Hannah Pfiefly - voted to impeach Jones.

Senator Mackenna Metzler abstained, citing personal conflicts of interests.

News Students dance the night away at NOCS outdoors  By Olivia Bryant Reporter

Students danced Sunday night away under the stars during a Night of Country Swing (NOCS) dance held in the Backyard.

NOCS, in partnership with Chadron State College’s Residence Life Association (RLA), hosted the swing dancing event from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., behind the Kent and Andrews residence halls. The event was themed, Why Don’t We Just Dance, and was hosted on campus to raise awareness of NOCS and increase student membership.

NOCS, which was founded in 2007, provides a way for students to appreciate Western Nebraska tradition and celebrate country swing dancing. Lessons are provided during the weekly dances for people who want to learn how to country swing dance, line dance, or just want to learn some new moves.

Poetry, songs, highlight first Sigma Tau Delta Open Mic Night  By Kincaid Strain Reporter

Eight performers showed off their talents to a packed audience in the Student Center Amphitheater Tuesday evening during Sigma Tau Delta’s first of several Open Mic Nights.

Caleb Smith, 21, of Broken Bow, sang an original song, Ballad of a Forty Foot Hole, while playing the guitar. Smith said he came to Open Mic Night because he “likes opportunities to play in front of new people.” The original song along with a handful of other original pieces, can be found on YouTube by searching Caleb Smith.

Other performers of the night were Abigail Swanson, the president of Sigma Tau Delta, Samuel LaRive, and a two-man band called 2nd Avenue, comprised of Josh Fernau and Thomas Hughes.

The next Open Mic Night event is October 25 at 7 p.m. It will have a Harry Potter theme.

“My favorite part about NOCS is that there is never a point where you stop learning,” NOCS Campus Activity Board (CAB) Representative Kelsey Crock, 21, senior of Cheyenne, Wyoming, said. “Every day I am learning more and more. It is so rewarding watching everyone’s transformation from the beginning of the year to the end.”

About 115 students filtered in and out of the lively three-hour evening event. Attendees were treated to snacks provided by NOCS and a prize raffle sponsored

by RLA. Prizes included a vacuum, two waffle makers, two Bluetooth speakers, and a dinnerware set.

“The thing about country swing dancing is that you can put your twist on it,” NOCS President Caleb Smith, 21, senior of Broken Bow, said. “I think it is really cool to bring people together and see what happens.”

The next dance is scheduled for Oct. 3 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center, located on the corner of Fourth and King streets.

Last week, students and staff did their part to help firefighters in need of housing as they came from cities all over to aid in the Crawford Post Fire.

On Thursday, Sept. 16, two wildfires broke out in Dawes and Scotts Bluff counties. The Post Fire located five miles south of Crawford, and the Vista Trend Fire, located southwest of Scottsbluff. Together, both fires have burned 8,234 acres.

Firefighters were called in from across Nebraska, including Hay Springs, Gordon-Rushville, Scottsbluff, Gering, Harrison and Chadron. As the fire spread fast, so did the need for assistance. The surrounding communities came together to support firefighters including CSC which stepped in to help by donating school mattresses, so they had somewhere to lay their heads.

Morgan Cullan, project coordinator of housing and residence life, came up with the idea to help the firefighters. She got the idea after she was contacted by a friend, a volunteer worker for the fire department who notified her that many firefighters were coming to town, but hotels were booked,

and housing was scarce.

“Originally, I asked if we could house them on campus, but since it was a weekend, it would have been too challenging maneuvering firefighters through the halls,” Cullan said.

That was when she suggested that the college could provide mattresses and house them in the fire hall. After getting approval from the director of housing, CSC was able to provide 27 beds.

Students on campus stepped in to move the donated mattresses from Kent Hall to trucks in the parking lot. Morgan asked a few students passing through Kent if they could tell a couple of friends about helping with the mattresses.

“It didn’t take long for a group of people to jump on the assignment and lend a hand,” Cullan said. “It was amazing and I was so proud of the students.”

The students even helped with the drop-off and return of the beds.

As of now, the fire is 100% contained and firefighters were grateful for Chadron State’s generosity.

“I think, for example, doing something like this does really open up eyes to people in the community to say if this does occur again, we know where we can go,” Cullan said.

“Just being strong community members, campus community members, is all it takes.”

It’s time to stop acting like we know and start reading

I

’ve heard it time and time again that Gen Z is “overexposed” to the happenings of the world.

Because we’re always on our phones, there’s absolutely no way we can avoid it.

And that impression is normally validated by the fact that most young people can tell you an interesting tidbit on just about any breaking news story.

As a member of Gen Z, I’d like to say that is really not true.

While we most definitely are on our phones every chance we get, that doesn’t mean Gen Z is doing deep-diving, news research.

Even I, a member of the journalism world, do not spend nearly enough time reading the news.

As much as I love my job, when I’m on my phone I don’t want to look at how our world is continuing to get worse. I’ve already spent so many hours of my day consuming new information - the last thing I want to do is consume more.

I want to relax and unwind.

Family values are changing, get over it u By Kamryn Kozisek Staff editor

As a daughter of divorced parents and a sister to biological, step, half and adopted siblings I can say with full confidence that traditional American family values are not under attack, at least not an attack that isn’t well deserved.

Traditional American families are defined as two married parents in biological households.

These nuclear families have been the supposed ‘preferred state’ of America since its founding. These households are often based in, gender role, Christianity, blood relation, anti-divorce, and heterosexuality ideations.

The compelling idea that gender roles in the U.S. are compromised is correct, men and women can both work to support the

household, they can both receive an education, and they can both participate in household chores and childrearing.

In fact, according to the Department of Labor, 72.25% of women with at least one child under 18, were working in 2019. Despite earning less than men per hour, women still make up 43.8% of all hours worked in the U.S. Even though women are contributing more and more each year to the economy, 59% of women said they still do more household tasks than their male partners, according to the Pew Research Center.

Blood relations and childbearing is another thing that is strong in traditional families, this explains strong ties to only those who you share genetics with.

In this version of family, genetics are the most important things when caring about someone else in a non-romantic context.

Kamryn Kozisek Many of us have heard the phrase “well they are still your (father, sister or brother)” when someone has wronged you, because of blood relations we are asked to put our morals aside and still love them.

Being related to someone does not mean that they get away with anything, if you would break up

with a friend over an issue than you should break up with family over it too.

I have eight younger siblings, two biological, one adopted, four step and one half and I can assure my connections to them are not greater with the biological ones.

Blood doesn’t make a family, you do.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the U.S. birth rate decreased 4% in 2020, not only due to pandemic related issues but overall decrease in pregnancies.

For some, this may seem like a decrease in the family value of having children and maybe it is.

There were 421,418 kids in the foster care system in 2019 according to the Department of Health and Human Services- over 400,000 kids already born in need of a home.

The fact of the matter is there are children that are in need of a family and yet traditional family values tell

them that they do not belong.

Being anti-divorce in no way means that you are pro-family. While researching this topic I found that a lot of people used statistics that showed children of divorced parents were more likely to be depressed.

In my opinion this has nothing to do with divorce and everything to do with toxic relationships.

I have divorced parents and their relationship before their divorce was not good. Just because we still lived in the same house doesn’t mean that our household was happy.

Them staying together wasn’t going make our lives better, it would have just made them miserable.

In the end, there is a war on traditional American family values but there should be. Those values are outdated and by getting rid of them we create healthier more open households, ones that weren’t created in the 1600s.

Religious morals shouldn’t dictate our laws u By Velvet Jessen Opinion Editor

Often times when debate occurs about things like abortion, the death penalty, birth control or gay marriage rights, you can hear the outcry of “But the bible says!”.

This argument will garner a lot of attention and ultimately might sway some votes.

As a member of the Catholic church, I understand the stances on these topics. However, I can not condone some the actions of Christians or the members of the Catholic church about these topics.

Everyone reserves the right to protest or voice their opinions, but

when you do you must also be responsible for your influence.

I’m not asking for Catholics or Christians to change their point of views or to stop standing for what they believe in.

I am asking them to take into consideration that the laws we influence affect more people than the members of the church.

While we should care about upholding our morals, we can’t force other people to follow them.

America is predominantly Christian but that doesn’t mean we should forget or overlook the other religions in the U.S. One of most important teachings in the Bible is to “Love thy neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39. So why do I find that we are often overlooking others’ needs or

morals in favor of ourselves.

If a different religion were more common within the U.S. Christians would want to be treated with compassion and tolerance for their views.

We should be giving the same considerations to the other reli-

gions. Not everyone shares our morals and we don’t have to understand it but we need to accept it.

Differing points of view are a fact of life and at some point, everyone has to get over it, even the church.

Accepting differing points of view are what make the U.S. a place that many people seek.

In the bible it does say that we should try and lead people in what we believe to be the right direction or lead them as well as we can towards God’s light. However, forcing them to participate in Christian beliefs is not going to convince them to join.

Christian beliefs are important but so are the beliefs of every other religion.

One religion is not more superior than another and no religion should be able to suppress the rights of another or use their morals to suppress the rights of any person.

Whether a person is religious, they should not be held to someone else’s religious standards.

Jewish, Atheist, Islamic and other beliefs are often forced to abide by laws that lean heavily i favor toward Catholic or Christian beliefs.

I know super strict Catholics, relaxed Christians or Catholics and Atheists.

None of them is better than the other based on their religions and absolutely none of their religious morals is more important than the other.

The Golden Rule comes in many different forms: In Judaism, the Torah states, “Love your neighbor as yourself – I am God.” (Leviticus 19:18) While Christians recite, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12, 30-31) In the Quran, Muslims learn, “Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet) …” (Quran 4:36) A quote from Lin Manuel-Miranda that the LGBTQ+ community has adopted is “Love is love is love,” said during his acceptance speech for the 2016 Best Score Tony Award for his Broadway show Hamilton.

Simplified, the rule is love your neighbor.

In this sense, neighbor doesn’t mean a person living physically close or next door to you. Your neighbor includes the person with a different skin color, political beliefs different from yours, a homeless person sleeping in an alley, a person who identifies with a gender you might not understand, an immigrant whose only crime is wanting a better life for themselves and their family, or the thousands suffering from the effects of war and famine in other countries.

Today is National Love People Day. A day to extend love to others without expecting something in return. A day to practice the golden rule and support others.

But why do we still need a national day to remind us to be kind to others and show them unconditional love?

Even though COVID-19 restrictions have decreased drastically in our region, in higher populated cities restrictions remain just as strenuous as they had been since the CDC first recommended masks on April 3, 2020.

According to CBS San Francisco Bay Area, a man was charged Tuesday with seven felony counts that included hate crime allegations for a string of violent robberies and attempted robberies in March that targeted Asian women. The crimes occurred as seven separate incidents and each victim was a Asian woman, many were monolingual Cantonese-speakers.

The National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA) has created an online tool that allows people to report incidents of violence or harassment in 29 different languages in order to collect data to better determine incidences of nationwide anti-Asian violence.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the 2020 hate crime incidents statistics show that a total of 7,759 hate crime incidents have occurred in the United States, 10,952 being related offenses motivated by biases.

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program, hate crime is defined as “a committed criminal offense which is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias(es) against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.”

Total hate crime incidents in 2020 increased by 472 and related offenses motivated by biases increased a total of 2,148 from statistics given in 2019. [2019: 7,287 - total hate crime incidents; 8,804 - related offenses motivated by biases.]

Because we haven’t reached the end of 2021, this year’s statistics are still unavailable.

In 2020, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) tracked 838 hate groups in the U.S., with nine groups located in Nebraska.

California tallied the most with 72 active hate groups with Florida close behind at 68.

BlackMatter threatened to release the information if the ransom was not paid by Sept. 25, according to The Messenger’s source, the ransom was not paid in time.

“What’s notable about the attack is the company’s insistence that they are critical infrastructure and should therefore be spared as per BlackMatter’s own policy,” John Shier, senior security adviser at Sophos, told Ars Techinca. “However, the operators behind BlackMatter disagree with this assessment and are continuing to pursue payment from the victim.

This attack will be the first to test the new US government policy on reporting attacks against critical infrastructure to CISA and the Biden administration’s response to such an attack.”

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission released a statement asking hunters to be aware of regulation changes with baiting and handguns, that might affect big game and turkey seasons.

The following changes were made; Baiting is illegal when hunting any of the big game species including elk, deer and pronghorn

and when hunting turkeys. Hunting within 200 yards of a bait sight is considered baiting, if hunting on an old bait site, bait must have been removed at least ten days prior.

Baiting materials include any feedstuff set out to attract animals including grains, hay and minerals (both loose and in blocks).

The hunter and the animal must both be 200 yards outside of a baited area.

If hunting big game, regardless

of season, a handgun may be carried if the barrel is under 5-inches. This weapon can only be used when a human life is under immediate threat.

Using a handgun while hunting when not defending a life or carrying a handgun with a barrel larger than five inches is illegal.

Illegally taking an animal can carry a fine of up to $10,000 depending on the species and horn/ antler size of the harvested animal.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission appointed Tim McCoy as the new director starting Nov. 2.

McCoy is currently the deputy director, a position he has held since 2012. He began working for Game and Parks in 2002, he got his start as a district manager in Kearney.

“I am honored to be selected as the next director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission,” McCoy said to Game and Parks. “It is a unique privilege and responsibility to lead the stewardship of Nebraska’s fish, wildlife and park resources and provide diverse opportunities for outdoor recreation” Jim Douglas, the current director announced his retirement last April after working for Game and Parks for 47 years and as the director for the last nine.

The CSC volleyball team split its weekend matches against a pair of South Dakota teams in its first home matches of the season.

The Eagles came away with a hard earned 3-2 victory against rival Black Hills State, Friday, but fell 3-1 against South Dakota Mines, Saturday.

“When you play a tough battle the night before, sometimes it’s hard to come back out the next day with the same amount of intensity and energy,” Jennifer Stadler, head volleyball coach, said. “We came out a little bit flat on Saturday. Just really couldn’t get a lot of things going and it just made a ton of errors on our side of the net.”

With her teammates scrambling to assist on defense, Fujiyama went one-on-one with BHSU outside hitter Madison Hoopman, junior of Douglas, Wyoming, blocking the attack and sending the ball onto the Yellow Jacket side of the court.

“It was so much fun,” teammate Amber Harvey, freshman of Centennial, Colorado, said. “Feeling the energy of everyone around you and them rooting for you to win was such a confidence booster, and it made ev-

erything so much more fun.”

Fujiyama had seven blocks and nine kills in the match.

Teammate Olivia Moten-Schell, sophomore of Billings, Montana, along with Harvey led in attacks in the win. Moten-Schell killed 13 of her 50 attacks while Harvey earned 19 kills of 43 attacks.

“Amber (Harvey) played extremely aggressive this past weekend,” Stadler said. “I thought she swung really aggressively, and she varied her shots.”

Saturday, CSC was unable to carry its momentum into their match with South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Despite the loss to the Hardrockers, Harvey killed 11 of her 41 attacks, leading the Eagles in both categories.

Defensively, Harvey and Fujiyama both had three blocks. While Audrey Bennett, freshman of Lenexa, Kansas, and Rylee Greiman, junior of Windsor, Colorado, recorded 12 digs each against South Dakota Mines.

Stadler said the games will teach the team that it can battle, push itself and be competitive with the team across the net.

“We have to limit our errors on our side of the net and push to earn our own points instead of giving away a lot of points.”

The Eagles travel to Colorado to face Fort Lewis in Durango at 7 p.m., Friday, and Western Colorado University in Gunnison at 3 p.m., Saturday.

Harvey led the Eagles in kills during both weekend games in the Chicoine Center. She had 19 kills of 43 attacks against BHSU, Friday, and 11 kills of 41 attacks against SD Mines, Saturday. She also had four total blocks over the weekend.

Hickstein finished fourth place of 64 golfers over the weekend at the Mustang Invite in Marshall, Minnesota, leading the Eagles and helping the team set CSC’s single-round team record. She finished the two days with 78-73-151.

A week after earning their first win of the season, the Eagles once again found themselves losing another close game, this time falling 24-17 to Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction.

“Every game you need to take away something, you learn from each game,” Jay Long, head football coach, said. “The one thing we want to focus on is figuring out ways to win the close game. We have to be able to figure out ways to get into the end zone and score more points.”

The Eagles led the Mavericks in total yards and time of possession, but too often failed to score.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Eagles looked poised to make a comeback after a two-yard run from Elijah Myles, junior of Hawthorne, California, capped a nine-play drive to bring Chadron within a touchdown.

But the team couldn’t score on its final drive after committing two offensive penalties and failing to get a single first down.

The loss brings Chadron’s record to 1-3 to begin the season and was

their second when trailing by seven or few points.

Earlier in the season the Eagles couldn’t overcome a four-point deficit to Angelo State despite two trips to the red zone with less than 10 minutes in the game.

“Red zone offense needs to do a better job and put points on the board,” Dalton Holst, graduate of Gillette, Wyoming, said. “Our defense played a great game on Saturday to help the offense out, I think we just need to return the favor and do a better job with scoring opportunities when we have the chance, especially inside the red zone.”

The Eagle’s defense held the Mavericks to three touchdowns and a field goal and kept them scoreless in both the first and fourth quarters. In their previous games, Colorado Mesa had scored 40 and 56 points.

Jeremiah Makahununiu, senior of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Noah Kerchal, senior of Benkelman, both recorded nine total tackles. While Hunter O’Conner, redshirt freshman of Broom field, Colorado, recorded a sack on Mesa’s quarterback for a loss of 17 yards.

“We played well against Mesa, but

definitely left a few plays out there,” Makahununiu said. “We just had some mistakes surrounding small details that have a large effect in such close games.”

Kael Juelfs, senior of Kingman, Arizona, blocked a 42-yard field goal attempt, which was recovered by CSC with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. This defensive move was similar to the three field-goal blocks and two punt blocks during their loss to Angelo State.

Holst completed 28 throws of 49 for 286 total yards. He also had six rushing attempts for a net of 10 yards.

Jahani Wright, redshirt freshman of Miami, Florida, caught four throws for 76 yards with the longest catch of the game for the Eagles at 41 yards.

Cole Thurness, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, had six receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Myles had 18 rushing attempts to gain 75 yards, with his longest rush being 11 yards.

CSC’s football team face New Mexico Highlands University with a noon kick-off time, Saturday in Las Vegas.

CSC golfers beat their previous record u By Mackenzie Dahlberg Sports Editor

Chadron State’s golfers set the college’s single-round team record with 306 points during their second day of competition to finish fourth of 10 teams at the Mustang Invite at Marshall Golf Club in Minnesota.

“I know that after the first day we were a little disappointed in how we played,” John Ritzen, head women’s golf coach, said. “We didn’t score bad, but I think that this course presented some good opportunities to shoot some low scores if you played well, they did that the second day.

We’re excited to see that record fall.”

The record was last set by the same team of golfers last season at 311 points, April 3 during the RJGA Palm Valley Classic in Goodyear, Arizona.

With their low second-day score, the Eagles finished with a total of 626 points, their first day scoring 320.

“Our top four girls all played really well and kind of had some break throughs in terms of two-day performances,” Ritzen said. “It was really good to see them put two days together and be at or better than where they’ve been in the past.”

Alpine Hickstein, junior of Chadron, remained under 80 strokes both days of the tournament to finish fourth against 64 golfers. She scored 151 total points with 78 points after the first day and 73 after the second.

“We all played OK the first day, but we knew we were better than that,” Hickstein said. “The second day was better overall for everyone and we all felt good about our performance.”

Brooke Kramer, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, held the second lowest score for the Eagles with a card of 80-76-156, finishing tied for 11th place.

Jordan Grasis, junior of Yuma, Arizona; Kinsey Smith, sophomore of Windsor, Colorado; and Allison Acosta, sophomore of Oro Valley, Arizona, all finished one stroke behind the other. Grasis tied for 19th with scored of 77-81-158. Smith scored 81-78-159 strokes finishing tied for 21st. Acosta had a score card of 81-79-160, tying for 24th.

Ritzen said all the golfers played well. The second, third, and fourth place golfers for the Eagles played a couple of strokes under their previous two-day best.

Eagle golfers have one remaining tournament for the fall portion of their season on Oct. 11 and 12 at the Samuel Proal Invite in Pueblo, Colorado.

Chadron State’s rodeo cowboys struggled to record times and only one CSC cowgirl made it to the short go over the weekend at the Sheridan College Rodeo, in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Dustin Luper, head rodeo coach, said that the team is still struggling to perform at the level he believes each athlete can, once they get to that level it will show in team results.

“The pressure to perform, lack of execution of the fundamentals, and not taking advantage of opportunity lead to the disconnect in the finals.”

Tayle Brink, senior of Reva, South Dakota, made it to Sunday’s short go in both the goat tying and breakaway roping. She placed ninth in breakaway roping with a three-second run. She finished the event fifth with an average time of 6.7 seconds, following her short round time at 3.7 seconds.

In goat tying, Brink tied down her goat in 8.2 seconds, putting her into a three-way tie for 10th place and qualifying her for the short go. Brink moved into sixth place with a time of 8.4 seconds in the final round. She averaged 16.6 seconds in the event.

Eastern Wyoming College. In their short round, they finished sixth with an average of 105.7 seconds.

“First round, we didn’t know what our steer was going to do but we went out there and did what we practiced,” Jake Chasek said. “Our short go, the steer wasn’t the best. His first two runs, he drug on the corner which is hard to get a steer to hop after that.”

Elsewhere in the event, Tanner Whetham, sophomore of Morrill, along with his University of Wyoming partner Cameron Jensen finished the long go in fifth place with a time of 7.6 seconds. The duo dropped to eighth place by the end of the rodeo with an average of 107.6 seconds.

Teigen Marchant, senior of Newcastle, Wyoming, qualified for the short go in steer wrestling where he earned second place catching his steer in 5.7 seconds.

Parker Johnston, sophomore of Maywood, finished his long round with 10.7 seconds, placing him sixth in the long round.

Neither cowboy received a time for their short round. Marchant finished seventh with an average of 105.7 seconds and Johnston finished with an average of 110.7 seconds, placing ninth.

Both CSC teams finished in eighth place. Against 10 teams, the men finished with 80 points. The women’s team finished with 70 points against a field of eight teams.

The Eagles compete again this weekend at the Central Wyoming College Rodeo in Riverton.

After taking a week off between meets due to sickness, CSC cross-country runners returned to the races, Friday in Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.

“I thought that it would be more beneficial for our group to hang back and just really focusing on getting our team back to full strength,” Luke Karamitros, head cross-country coach, said. “Last thing you want to do is race whenever you’re sick. It’s really hard to handle all of that stress.”

Despite being scheduled to run in Black Hills State University’s Gage McSpadden Memorial meet on Sept. 17, Karamitros decided to cancel those plans to give the team recovery time for sickness that had been spreading around campus.

“That’s why I’m also grateful and proud of how our kids competed,” Karamitros said.

Finishing 99th of 374 total runners, Cale Schafer, freshman of Lasalle, Colorado, led the Eagles to the finish line with a time of 27:58.5. Over the course of the race, he passed about 110 runners and held onto the lead position for the first time as an Eagle.

Behind Schafer was Garrett Avery, sophomore of Sheridan, Wyoming, who placed 101st with

a time of 28:09.1.

“I was able to work with Garrett Avery in the race and we pushed each other hard throughout,” Schafer said. “Either one of us could’ve finished as our first runner, and I’m happy with how we raced.”

Noah Burtis, sophomore of Berthoud, Colorado, and Joaquin Venzor, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, both finished with times that were seconds apart. Burtis was timed at 28:18.6 placing in 108th while Venzor finished in 111th place with a time of 28:21.0.

CSC’s men’s cross-country team finished with 547 points, placing 18th of 27 in the Maroon 8k race and the women’s cross-country team for CSC finished 24th of 27 teams with 698 points in the Maroon 6k.

“On the women’s side, the whole crew did really good,” Karamitros said. “It was a collective effort, and everyone improved even more from our first race.”

Leading the race for the women’s team, Alissa Wieman, freshman of Box Elder, South Dakota, placed 118th against 327 runner, setting a time for 24:52.1.

A little over a minute behind Wieman, Sydney Settles, junior of Lincoln, placed 181st with a time of 25:53.1.

The Eagle runners compete in the FHSU Tiger Open for their last regular season meet on Saturday, Oct. 9, in Hays, Kansas.
