CSC ‘PROTECTS THE ROCK’ FOR HOMECOMING CSC’s “Protect The Rock” Homecoming hosted a bevy of events, starting with the annual quidditch tournament and the coronation of homecoming royalty. The weekend continued with a dance, Bongo Ball and

Battle Ball, the annual homecoming parade, home volleyball matches and a home football game, then was capped off with the second-annual ThinkFast trivia challenge.

CAB hosts mandatory accounting training for clubs Shannon Schneider Reporter CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez announced CAB organizational accounting training is scheduled for 11 a.m., today in the Student Center.

The mandatory training, which covers accounting basics like reimbursements and price sheets, requires at least one executive member from each club to attend a meeting. Two meeting dates, which also included a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, were created to accommodate student and adviser schedules.

“Students do not need to go at the same time as advisers,” Hernandez said. “If Tuesday or Thursday works better, just go

to whichever works better.”

Student Activities Coordinator and CAB Adviser Megan Northrup added that if any advisers couldn’t make it, or if there were any questions that needed answered, she would be available to help.

“I would be willing to meet with anybody individually,” Northrup said. “Even if your president wants to meet, or if you all want to meet and have questions, I’m always available.”

Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann announced that several clubs are missing information regarding their executive boards. HPER is currently missing a treasurer, and Omega Phi Rho and United are each missing secretaries.

In addition to missing executive members, McGann re-

minded clubs to continue checking their e-mails for CAB agendas. As agendas are no longer printed, it’s essential to check what is posted online.

CAB Treasurer Isaac Langan reported that clubs have spent a total of $9,669.29 this semester.

Clubs can pick up Homecoming bed sheets at the student information desk by The Pit. Hernandez expressed thanks for every club putting hard work into the sheets.

Free Bowling Night will be held from 6-9 p.m., Sunday at Hilltop Lanes. Free pizza will be included.

RLA will be hosting Silly Supper on Friday, from 6-8 p.m. in the ballroom, and a Husker Party 5:15-9 p.m., Saturday in the Hub.

Opinion hearing held for unexcused senator absences Devin Fulton Reporter Senate brought in Marlys Brenning, 21, senior of Culbertson, for an opinion hearing of Klueber V. Tedesse due to an unexcused absence of Natneal Tedesse, junior of Chadron, Monday.

Senate is going to continue with their feminine hygiene initiative, providing feminine hygiene products on campus located in various restrooms. The main locations for feminine products will be at the NPAC, Old Admin,and the Student Center.

In an effort to help students on campus become registered voters for the upcoming midterm elections, Senate will be hosting a “Registration to Vote” drive.

“We are looking at having two days where we have tables set up to help students register to vote prior to Oct. 19,” said Konery Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota. The Drive will come with “Register to Vote-kits,” including stickers.

Senate approved the motion to allocate $176.00 towards the National Association for Music Educators club to stay at a hotel that is within a close distance of their conference.

It was announced that there were 13 floats during the Homecoming Parade and 656 voters for the Homecoming Elections which was “higher than in years passed,” Merrill said.

Over 139 people attended Coronation.

Senate helped host Bongo Ball and Battle Ball in the NPAC, Friday. A total of 15 people attended the event.

These events were funded for Spring Days last year for $1,250 from last year’s budget and $1,200 from this year’s budget. These events are part of a contract, as Senate did not want to refuse an event already paid for.

Senate currently has $55,130 in unallocated funds.

Paul Turman selected as NSCS chancellor-designate Torri Brumbaugh Co-Editor The Nebraska State College System announced Paul Turman, Ph.D., as the next chancellor-designate, Monday.

Turman was one of four finalists to be interviewed for the Chancellor position Sunday and Monday. The NSCS Board of Trustees had been searching for a new chancellor since late May, when Chancellor Stan Carpenter announced his retirement after 18 years of service.

“The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees is excited to have Dr. Turman as our Chancellor-Designee. We are confident that he will lead the State Colleges to a bright future and keep our mission to

provide a high quality, affordable education to our students as a priority,” Gary Bieganski, chair of the NSCS Board of Trustees, said in a NSCS news release.

According to the news release, the Board of Trustees “unanimously authorized the Chancellor Search Committee to enter into negotiations and the Chair to enter into an employment agreement with [Turman].”

Turman is currently the System Vice President for Academic Affair for the South Dakota Board of Regents. Before starting his career with the South Dakota Board of Regents, he was a professor at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Over the last few days I have noticed a rise in supporting body acceptance on social media. Influencers on Instagram are posting “bare face” photos with captions supporting their natural look. I see some of my friends postings photos of them just waking up with captions like “I woke up like this #flawless.”

After seeing so many people follow this trend that seems to fluctuate throughout the year, I decided to comment on it as well.

This might not be a popular opinion, but do whatever you feel like doing, and don’t second guess it. If all you want to post on social media is you in a full face of makeup, go for it. If you want to do a few bare face and a few with minimal make up, more power to you. Maybe you just want to post a picture of your dog, that’s also okay.

Here’s the thing my friends, most of the time these things you think of when you’re staring at that picture, debating whether or not to post it, don’t really matter.

Too often we criticize ourselves for what pictures we are posting. People will

notice a genuine smile or if you’re feeling confident in a picture.

There might be a picture you’ve been debating to post on Instagram but you think you have a double chin. Look at the whole picture. Are you laughing so hard with a friend that it gives you the double chin? Did someone capture a candid of you and your friends in the most beautiful setting, but you are picking apart the picture with a microscope? Think about how you were feeling when you took that picture.

Were you having the time of your life? Did you or a friend say something stupid so you laughed?

There’s so much more to social media than the typical selfie. There are moments

we asked:

in life we record and fear what people are going to say or how people are going to perceive us. But who actually cares? Do you remember everyone’s picture they post? My guess is you remember the ones of friends and family recording blissful moments in life, not the selfie someone posted a week ago.

Therefore, this week if you are thinking about posting a picture of you on break or hanging out with friends/family, just do it.

There’s no reason to second guess the picture that captured a moment that you want to share. Yes, not everyone will see the worth of that photo like others. But what does it matter so long as you like it?

So, post that picture you’ve saved to your camera roll for two weeks, post an album of some of the things you’ve done this semester with your friends even if you don’t like the way you look. Ultimately, don’t let other people’s potential reactions get in the way of you posting something.

Whether it be a bare face photo, a picture of you laughing it up with friends, a photo of you taking a nap with your pup or maybe you just think you look hot, just post it.

Don’t let other people make you second guess yourself, my dudes.

To wear or not to wear: Adult halloween costumes Shannon Schnieder Reporter Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and ... a sexy witch costume?

Now that we’re in the spooky month, we can expect to see a slew of Halloween decorations filling the shelves and selling out just as quickly. Of these items, adult costumes are at the top, meaning more adults are getting in on the festivities.

Adults are into Halloween, and the numbers don’t lie; according to an article by TIME magazine, national spending on Halloween has grown from $5 billion to approximately $8.4 billion in the last decade. On costumes alone, nearly half of the nation’s adults dress up for the holiday, and on average spend 42 percent more on costumes than their kid counterparts. This is good news for corporate America, but an un-

derlying question still remains: should adults be dressing up in the first place?

In order to make a verdict, I think it’s necessary to look at some of the reasons behind adults dressing up.

For some, it’s their one night a year to showcase their creativity and take a vacation from the day-to-day slog, giving over the reins to the Id (that fun-loving side of consciousness that says you should definitely eat cake for supper) rather than the Ego (the reasonable side that says roast beef and potatoes would be a much better choice). For others, it’s a social event; there’s Halloween parties galore, and a staple to a good Halloween party (besides some killer hors d’oeuvres) is costumes.

When it comes down to it, it’s about fun.

People want to have fun, and parties and costumes are fun. Still, in the face of this, there are some who make it a case for maturity, claiming those that dress up are exhibiting Peter Pan Syndrome and refusing to grow up.

Personally, I think calling every person who dresses up “childish” is a bit of a stretch.

If a 25-year-old is dressing up as the Incredi-

ble Hulk and going door-to-door with kids half their age, I can understand. But if someone is dressing up for the sake of the holiday and hosting or attending a Halloween party (especially one of the 21-and-over variety), then give me a break.

People are going to do what they want, and no amount of naysaying is going to get it the way of adults dressing up for Halloween. It’s a fun holiday for all, and if someone wants to criticize you for going as a “Walking Dead” character to your local bar’s Halloween party, they can remove the broomstick from you-know-where and leave it at that.

Want to dress up as your favorite TV show character or even the cliché vampire?

Go ahead, it’s your prerogative. The party poopers can save their comments for another day, and you can enjoy your break from the mundane.

Memorization takes practice and repetition Abigail Swanson Contributor Have you ever wanted to memorize a passage, definition, verse or poem, but just couldn’t get it to stick in your mind? Memorization takes time and work, but I will share some tips and tricks I have picked up for memorizing quickly and permanently.

First off is the basic method of memorizing: repetition. The most effective way to learn a passage is to repeat it until it sticks in your head.

First, read the whole passage a few times, then pick your first chunk. This chunk should be between five and 12 words long. I try to pick a phrase or short sentence.

Read this phrase about five times out loud, then, without looking, try to say it another five times. Pick your next chunk, then read it and say it five times like you did the first chunk. After you have both chunks

separately, try to say them together another five times. Make sure to check the book every so often to make sure you have it down word for word.

After that, you work on the next chunk, say the three together, work on number four, say one through four and so on until you fin-

ish the passage.

After you can say the passage fairly well without peeking, it is important to say it all the way through another five or 10 times. I know it is annoying, but you will thank yourself later.

The final piece of memorizing is review.

An hour or so after you finish memorizing, go back and try to say it again. Don’t be discouraged if you have a hard time remembering, just read over it again and try to say it a few times.

It can help if you get your roommate to listen to you. They can prompt you and correct you when you forget or mess up.

Review one more time just before you go to bed. The next day, you need to go over it again and at least once a day for the next week. After that, depending on how well you need to know the information, review once a week, then several times a month.

If you forget again, don’t worry. Each time

you re-memorize, it will be easier to remember.

For some passages, the repetition method just doesn’t work for you. In that case, or just to add some spice to ordinary memorization, you can take extra steps.

Instead of standing or sitting while memorizing, you can actually walk around.

Movement stimulates different areas of your brain and can help you stay focused on memorizing.

You can also practice an accent when you are repeating, the funnier the better. Writing the passage down and even drawing pictures of the passage can help as well.

With today’s technology, you could also make a recording of yourself and play it on loop while you get ready in the morning, get unready at night, clean or just plop.

Don’t worry if it takes a long time to get your first passage down, the more you memorize, the easier it gets. Memory is a muscle that needs to be exercised regularly.

On the Eagles’ next possession another freshman, Elijah Myles, running back of Hawthorne, California, provided another spark as he dashed through the Mountaineers’ defense for a 16-yard touchdown.

The score put the Eagles up 14-0.

Midway through the second quarter, quarterback Dalton Holst, sophomore of Gillette, Wyoming, found a wide-open Brandon Fullerton, junior of Riverton, Wyoming, for a 53-yard TD that continued the trend of big plays and put the Eagles up 26-7.

Leading 33-7 at halftime, the Eagles put the nail in the coffin with a 68-yard touchdown run by junior running back Stevann Brown, of Casper, Wyoming, during their first possession of the second half.

Despite the Eagles’ big win, the Mountaineers managed to lead time of possession, controlling the ball for 37:21, with a majority of that time coming in the second half. The Mountaineers were also able to rush for 186 yards against the Eagles.

Defensively, the Eagles were able to create four turnovers with inter-

ceptions from Goss and Kyle Temple, senior of Norfolk, and two fumbles forced by CSC’s Calder Forcella, junior of Greybull, Wyoming, and Cole Thurness, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Temple’s interception, his first of the season, came as he dropped back into coverage from the defensive end position and snatched the pass from Western State’s Jacob who appeared to not see the linebacker.

Temple returned the pick 26 yards before being brought down.

The Eagles’ offense put up 388 yards with 108 yards on the ground and 280 yards through the air. Three Eagles running backs found the end zone including Kevin Coy Jr., senior of Davenport, Florida, who scored his sixth TD of the season.

On Saturday, the Eagles will travel to Alamosa, Colorado, to play the Adams State Grizzlies who currently sit fifth in the RMAC with a 3-2 record.

The Eagles sit second in the RMAC with a 4-1 record both overall and within the conference, and are inching closer to a top 25 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

ThinkFast returns to campus to conclude homecoming events Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor The CSC homecoming festivities wrapped up Saturday night with the second-annual ThinkFast trivia event in the Ballroom, with one trivia master walking away with $200.

Colton Molcyk, 21, senior of McCook, walked away with the $200 cash prize after winning the preliminary speed round and the final trivia round. Molcyk wouldn’t have had a chance to be in the final round had it not been for the talent challenges throughout the night.

“My clicker died twice, so I had my points rest twice,” he said.

Molcyk was a solo player Saturday, so he walked away with the prize in full.

ThinkFast is a trivia challenge by the company ThinkFast Interactive, and is hosted by two ThinkFast Interactive employees. This trivia challenge is completely staged with lights and music, two screens, four podiums with buzzers and microphones and a DJ booth.

Lining up this event was a “long process,”

said Taylor Osmotherly, associate director of Residence Life.

ThinkFast Interactive reached out to Osmotherly about coming back to CSC to put on another game show.

Once the company expressed their interest in bringing ThinkFast back to the college, Osmotherly then had to communicate with the Homecoming Committee to see if this was an event it wanted as a part of Homecoming.

RLA worked out contracts with ThinkFast Interactive, and ultimately booked them for $2,600.

Osmotherly expected around 50 people to show up, and the night saw 42 in total, along with six RAs manning the event.

“It’s hard being the Saturday night after Homecoming,” Osmotherly said.

However, that didn’t stop the players from pulling out all the stops and playing a competitive game.

At 9 p.m., host Tyler Mercereau kicked off the night by giving participants a run-down of how the game worked, while Brandon Schnotala DJ’ed and provided background music for the competition.

Each team had one remote. Teams could have up to five players, but people could also choose to play solo. Team names were completely randomized, giving an element of anonymity which upped the competitive atmosphere as players had no idea who was in the top three.

A question popped up on the two large screens at the front of the room, and the teams had to decide which of the five options was the correct answer for the question. The faster the team buzzed in, the more points it earned.

The questions were asked in different formats, including video questions and “Think Faster!” rounds, where teams would only have four seconds to answer each question in a set of five questions.

One of the ways in which this game varied from other trivia games is the ability to switch your answer after sending it in. As time ticked down, incorrect answer options would disappear.

If the option a team selected was no longer up there, the team still had a chance to switch their answer and earn some points.

ThinkFast isn’t only trivia. Players also got to participate in singing, dancing and acting challenges. In one challenge, two volunteers had 20 seconds to try to convince the room of competitors to move to Mars. Another two volunteers each chose a song and sang it for 20 seconds.

At the end of each of these challenges, the teams all voted on who was the best, and this person would later go on to play in a speed round of trivia to earn a spot in the final trivia challenge of the night.

The top three scoring teams each sent up a representative, and the three teams and the challenge trivia winner went head-to-head in the final trivia round.

In this round, each of the four competitors had to buzz in, the first to buzz in only having two seconds to answer the trivia question.

If correct, the competitor would tack on 100 points. The first competitor to 500 points won the cash prize of $200, provided by TJohnE Productions.

“It felt great (to win),” Molcyk said. “It was a rush, and definitely my favorite part of Homecoming.”

Homecoming sweep Eagles get wins over Yellow Jackets, Hardrockers Nicole Lartey & Brandon Davenport Reporter The Chadron State Eagles were winners of consecutive rivalry games this homecoming weekend, defeating Black Hills State University 25-17, 25-21, 25-17, on Friday; and South Dakota Mines 25-12, 12-25, 25-23, 25-23, Saturday.

After a second set in which the Eagles surrendered their lead late, the team showed resilience, pulling out wins in the third and fourth sets.

Both were tied at 23 before CSC closed them out.

“It was fun, and the energy was great,” Eagles’ Amelia Berg, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, said. “Everyone played as a team like we should.

We controlled the game and played our hearts out.”

Senior Madison Webb, of Loveland, Colorado, had a double-double in the match with 14 digs and 45 assists.

A total of four CSC players managed double-digit kills led by freshman Aracely Hernandez, of Greeley, Colorado, with 15. Hernandez also had 8 digs and an ace serve in the win.

“We knew when we recruited (Hernandez) that she was going to be an immediate impact kid,” Coach Riann Mullis said of her freshman player after Saturday night’s game. “She comes in and she battles, she doesn’t play like a freshman.

If people didn’t know she was a freshman, they’d think she was a junior.

On Friday, during the Eagles’ win over Black Hills State, Hernandez also led the Eagles in kills

with 13, but did so while hitting .257, compared to her .146 Saturday, contributing to the Eagles hitting .301 as a team against the Yellow Jackets.

The mark was the group’s highest single-game hitting percentage this season.

Sophomore Chandler Hageman, of Chadron, was just behind Hernandez with 12 kills, but converted 18 of her attacks for a .611 hitting percentage. She also had five blocks.

Teammates Shelby Schouten, junior of Alton, Iowa, and Brooke Gardner, junior of Princeville, Illinois, both had 11 kills each and hit .308 and .304, respectively.

“It’s the best we have played,” Webb said of the Eagles’ match against Black Hills State, Friday.

“We worked as a team and didn’t lose focus.”

The wins move the Eagles to 5-12 overall this season and 3-5 in conference games.

Golfers win titles in SD Chessa Parker Reporter

Short two players, the Chadron State College women’s golf team won team and individual titles at the South Dakota Mines’ Hardrocker Invitational in Rapid City, South Dakota, held Monday and Tuesday.

Kayla Elder, freshman of Fort Collins, Colorado, was removed from the course after suffering a concussion when she was struck by a ball. Elder occupies the number two spot for the team and was the top scorer during the team’s previous tournament, the RMAC Fall Preview in Grand Junction, Colorado.

“Losing her obviously affected the team performance, but the other girls stepped up and played well in her absence,” Coach John Ritzen said of the event.

Logan Kasten, sophomore of Cheyenne, Wyoming, who was playing as an individual, was sent home with flu-like symptoms.

Monday, the four-woman team had a round one score of 344, followed by a round two score of 343, on Tuesday. The two-day team total of 687 was 32 strokes fewer than second place team Black Hills State University.

Alpine Hickstein, freshman of Chadron, led the team carding 80 in round one, earning her first place. Hickstein then carded 86 in round two, bringing her two-day score to 166. The freshman finished first in a field of 29 women, two strokes ahead of Black Hills State’s Kiley Phares, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota.

“There’s a lot of things to be excited about. We broke our school record when we were in Grand Junction, and so I’d like to potentially be around that new school record, maybe even break our own record again this year,” Coach John Ritzen said of the rest of the season. “But I’m really most excited to see the team grow.”

Anna Branscome, freshman of Lakewood, Colorado, carded an 86 on Monday, tying her for second place after the first round. She then dropped two strokes Tuesday, carding an 84. Her two-day total of 170, which was four strokes better than her previous performance in Grand Junction, earned her third overall.

Abby White, freshman of Ontario, Canada, shot an 89 in round one and dropped five strokes to 84 during round two to give her a two-day score of 173, good for fourth place.

Sam Rahmig, senior of Gering, shot 89-89-178 and earned sixth place.

The women’s golf team won’t be in action again until Oct. 15 and 16 when they travel to the Meadowlark Hills golf course in Kearney for the Nebraska Women’s Intercollegiate.

Volleyball “We really needed (the wins),” Mullis said Saturday evening. “The girls really love playing at home, and these are two of our biggest rivals. We’re really happy with two wins. “(Friday night) really set the tone for what we can do. That’s our standard. We’ve been talking about it, but now it’s actually been implemented,” Mullis said.

When the dust settled at the Central Wyoming College Rodeo in Riverton, Wyoming, this past weekend, two CSC cowboys took first in their events.

They were Miles Englebert, senior of Burdock, South Dakota, and Kyle Bloomquist, sophomore of Raymond, Minnesota.

Englebert was the only cowboy to go the full eight seconds atop his bulls, combining for 156 points and the event win.

Bloomquist once again took top honors in bareback, besting Gillette’s Jake Kesl, who took second, by 11 points.

Both performances helped keep Bloomquist and Englebert atop the Central Rocky Mountain Region standings.

Bloomquist, who has totaled 395 points this season in bareback, currently has a 65-point lead over CWC’s Thomas Davis, who sits in second.

Englebert is currently tied for first place in bull riding with Sheridan’s Coby Johnson.

Two CSC cowgirls, junior Kaycee Monnens, of Hulett, Wyoming, and senior Hannah Hostutler, of Phillip, South Dakota, sit as runnersup in the NIRA regional standings, and each placed second in their respective events this past weekend.

Monnens, who in goat tying currently trails Gillette’s Taylour Latham by just 20 points in the regional standings, tied for second with Casper’s Emily Knust in Riverton, with a time of 15.3 seconds.

Latham won the event, recording a time of 14.9 seconds.

Hostutler was fifth in breakaway with a time of three seconds in her first go, and had a time of 2.6 seconds in the finals to take second place in the event. Her combined 5.6 was just .2 seconds behind event winner Brooke Howell, of Gillette.

Hostutler currently sits 95 points behind University of Wyoming’s Teisha Coffield in the breakaway regional standings.

In team scoring, the CSC women took third place with 255 points, while the men’s team took fifth with 275.

University of Wyoming took the men’s team title with 855 points while Gillette College won the women’s title with 375.

Both the CSC men’s and women’s rodeo teams sit in fifth place in the regional standings.

In a messy New York apartment in the 1980s, four women sit around a table playing Trivial Pursuit while another scrounges the kitchen for refreshments. It’s a hot summer night and the air conditioner in the apartment is broken. Even the soda is hot – the fridge is broken, too – and the refreshments seem . . . not so fresh . . . when Olive Madison, played by Jennaya Hill, junior of Gordon, returns from the kitchen. She saves her team with a list of baseball facts before she’s even heard the entire question.

As a tribute to the late Neil Simon (1927-2018), the CSC Theatre Program is performing “The Odd Couple” tonight through Sunday in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. The two-hour performance is free – no ticket needed – but it is considered PG-13.

stage is a messy New York apartment – clothes are thrown all over the place, hanging off furniture and pictures on the wall; piles take up corners, and there are stacks of newspapers and packages lying around on the floor along with random (sometimes mismatched) shoes. Most of the pictures are askew, regardless of whether they have clothing on them.

Immediately the audience is introduced to Hill’s character, even though she isn’t on stage at the beginning of the scene. She’s not shy about it though; in fact, more than once throughout the play, Olive easily fesses up to her slovenly lifestyle and appears to have no qualms with it. We also learn that she still cares for her ex-husband and often sends him checks of pretty substantial amounts of money to help get him out of tight places after his gambling adventures go awry.

Sometime later still, Mickey’s husband calls to tell them that their friend, Florence Unger, is missing.

Mickey and Florence are played by Taylor Thies, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Mickenzi Loyd, senior of Big Piney, Wyoming, respectively.

Continued from “The Odd Couple” page 14 This news leads Olive to call Florence’s husband, Sidney, who tells her that he’s left Florence after 14 years of marriage. All of the women are shocked and worried that Florence might be suicidal, especially since no one has heard from her. Lo and behold, amidst their worrying, Florence appears.

One thing leads to another, and as all the other women return home for the night, Florence stays. After a while, Olive asks her to move in permanently and “proposes.” Florence says yes.

Uptight, pristine Florence and slobby Olive make a go for it but soon learn that they are two entirely different people, and it just gets better as the time goes on.

After the 10-minute intermission, we are reintroduced to the same apartment two weeks after Florence has moved in, and there is such a change that it almost looks like an entirely different place.

It’s spotless.

Even the Trivial Pursuit cards have been disinfected.

And among all this cleaning? Florence is still minorly obsessed with

her ex-husband and the split. It drives Olive up the wall and, for the sake of her own sanity as well as her intimate life, she proposes a double date with the Costazuela brothers from the floor above them.

It takes some persuading, but Florence eventually caves, and we get to watch as this interesting turn of events unfold.

Simon’s play is filled with hilarious one-liners and interesting characters all around.

The female-driven cast does a wonderful job presenting their characters and immersing the audience in the performance. And we can’t forget the Costazuela brothers, played by Caleb Stadler, freshman of North Platte, and Trajan Garcia, freshman of Alliance, who lend a sympathetic ear to Florence throughout her suffering process and allow her to “get [her emotions] up.”

Other cast members include Courtney Smith, junior of Hampton; Hannah Smith, junior of Broken Bow; and Kori Teasley, freshman of Custer, South Dakota. Roger Mays, professor of Visual and Performing Arts, is the play’s director.

‘Criminals in Love’ auditions Tuesday

Auditions for the next show, “Criminals in Love,” will be held from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Memorial Hall Black Box Theatre, room 227. Callbacks will be held from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the same location. To audition, sign up for a five-minute time slot outside of the Black Box Theatre and perform a prepared 60-90 second monologue, or read from one provided. Student performs solo recital Kaylee Garvin Reporter Clarinetist Bryony Trump, senior of Sterling, Colorado, performed her half recital, Sunday, at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center’s Chicoine Atrium. Trump, accompanied by Bobby Pace, performed two solo pieces as partial fulfillment of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Music.

The first piece, “Grand Duo Concertant,” by Carl Weber, includes three movements.

The first movement, “Allegro con fuoco” is fast-paced and features arpeggios and diatonic scalar runs.

“I learned the most from just repetition of the piece,” Trump said. “After a while, it gets stale and I have to find a new angle, just like life can be sometimes.”

The second, “Andante con moto” is slow and mysterious. Third, “Rondo: Allegro” combines themes from the previ-

ous movements into a grand finish.

The second piece, “Sonata in F minor for Clarinet and Piano,” by Johannesburg Brahms, consists of four movements.

“Allegro appassionato” is dark and atmospheric. The second movement was “Andante un poco Adagio.” Third, “Allegretto grazioso” playfully exchanges the melodic line between the clarinetist and pianist. “Vivace” concluded the recital with a spirited, “whimsical” finale.

Trump put an exceptional amount of time and effort into her pieces, preparing Weber since Spring 2016 and Brahms since Fall 2017.

Trump’s half recital was originally scheduled for Spring 2018. However, an injury from a rollover car accident prevented her from performing.

“I think the most difficult part of preparation has just been getting back into the swing of things after my accident,” Trump said. “It’s always hard after a summer spent trying to recuperate.”

Trump is scheduled for another performance Spring 2019.

Sigma Tau Delta hosts Scream Slam Donica Enevoldsen Reporter Spooky stories, poetry, comedy, singing and even rapping took place during the annual Sigma Tau Delta Scream Slam open mic night at the Sandoz Center, Monday night.

Sigma Tau Delta, a part of the International English Honor Society, hosts an open mic night every month and the event is open to all students.

Contrasting the club’s February Love Slam, the October Scream Slam embraces the spirit of Halloween as students share their love for spooky literary work.

“I like the fact that we have an activity on campus that you can come participate in and enjoy no matter what your major is,” Shannon Schneider, 22, senior of Cody, said.

As the sun set, the room was left dimly lit. Only a string of lights illuminated the reader, adding to the ambience of the Halloween theme as the audience of about 25 students and faculty sat in the darkness listening to the eerie readings of the evening.

The environment was relaxed and anyone with something to read was welcomed to do so.

A variety of work was read, including “The Hearse Song,” a traditional children’s song about the process of human decomposition, as well as a handful of cheesy Halloween jokes.

Several students shared original poems and short stories, and others read passages from their favorite authors.

The night included 10 readers and lasted over an hour. Pizza and treats were provided.

Aaron Jones, 19, sophomore of Custer, South Dakota, read a selection of poems which he had written.

Stephanie Glass, 28, of Chadron, read a poem which she had just written that day.

Rachel Mitchell, 21, senior of Riverton, Wyoming, said the night was a great opportunity for students to share their work in a low-risk environment, practice public speaking, have the chance to receive constructive criticism and enjoy what is always a fun time.

Sigma Tau Delta will be hosting its next open mic night Monday, Nov. 5.

Motivational speaker shares story of climbing Everest Chessa Parker Reporter What’s your Everest?

This is a question motivational speaker Brian O’Malley asked the crowd Thursday night in the Ballroom. O’Malley’s speech centered around what inspired his trip up Mount Everest.

O’Malley is an adventurer, father, motivational speaker and author of the book “Secret of the Mountains”, which won the Teachers’ Choice Award Children’s Book. He has worked as a police officer, SWAT team member, firefighter and paramedic. These adventures on their own were enough to make him appreciate life to a fuller extent, O’Malley said.

At a young age, O’Malley began his two-

year training to hike up Mount Everest, which included climbing, cycling and stair workouts.

At the age of 30, he was finally able to make the journey of a lifetime.

The trip was not an easy one to make as O’Malley faced many struggles along the way.

In a city before they started their climb, it was thought he became ill with viral meningitis. He lost hearing in both ears and the memory of an entire week. Because of this, he had to leave his team and return home to recover.

This did not stop him from returning once he recovered. O’Malley journeyed alone to catch up with his team, which had continued up the mountain without him.

O’Malley said that he and his team came 800 feet from the top of the summit, but due to certain elements, they were unable to reach the top. He was still satisfied with the trip be-

cause they met the goal of having everyone make it back alive.

“I had the opportunity to have a front row seat, full backstage pass to life, and I’ve loved every minute of it,” O’Malley said.

A theme found throughout his speech was “people.”

“It is that tapestry of difference that makes the magic,” O’Malley said of the differing cultures he experienced. “None of us reach our summits without standing on the shoulders of a lot of people.”

O’Malley’s speech was interactive and engaging from start to finish. In the beginning, attendees were told to look around the room and make eye contact with a stranger. Then, with this new found friend, you had to share a risk taken at a younger age that made you proud. Faces lit up at the ability to talk about

their personal risks and how they paid off.

O’Malley also used media means to pull the audience in and make it fun. Using a picture and video presentation, watchers were able to feel as though they were traveling across the globe to climb the mountain themselves. As a musician, the presentation included music that he had written himself.

O’Malley had the capabilities to draw in the audience in outstanding ways.

“I have a wish for you,” O’Malley told the audience, “that you choose a mountain to climb. A mountain that is uniquely yours ... one that grabs your passion.”

His goal was for each audience member to ask “what’s my Everest”, and face whatever the answer may be.

O’Malley’s final words were, “Your mountain is waiting. Go Eagles. Namaste.”
