The beginning of the academic year is always a busy and exciting time, but this year is especially memorable as it marks the latter part of a two-year celebration commemorating the college’s founding 100 years ago in 1911.

The Eagle, the voice of Chadron State College since 1920, is proud to record the happenings of this historic year by providing news, sports, and entertainment coverage alongside a number of opinion columns, lifestyles features, and media reviews.

We invite you to contribute in whichever way you are gifted - be it through photography, illustration, writing, or design, many opportunities exist to communicate information to your fellow colleagues.

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

CSC president highlights best of college, campus Dear Students, Welcome to Chadron State College!

As a student attending CSC in 2011, you have the distinction of attending during the institution’s centennial year. We are proud of the reputation Chadron State has developed during the past 100 years, and are certain you will find the upcoming months rewarding and enjoyable. Dedicated and passionate faculty members will help you excel in your chosen field of study, just as they have done with thousands of other students since the first class convened in June 1911.

With a wide array of extracurricular activities and sporting events, there’s plenty to keep you busy at CSC. When you’re not studying, you’ll have the opportunity to take in theatrical performances, musical events, speakers, art exhibits, intramural sports and club sports. We’re also counting on you to cheer the Eagles to victory as they compete in their respective NCAA Division II athletic programs.

CSC’s amenities continue to evolve to enhance your experience. A reorganization of the student services this summer is designed to help ease your process of doing business with the institution. You will find wireless access throughout the residence halls and many other buildings on campus. The top-notch exercise equipment in the Nelson Physical Activity Center and the system of recreational trails south of campus are there to help you stay fit.

We live in the most beautiful part of the state, and I encourage you to use your opportunity as a student here to experience northwest Nebraska and all of its great attributes.

Take advantage of the countless sight-seeing and recreational opportunities within a short distance. The community prides itself on being welcoming, and has many services to meet your needs. Many of them can be found in this publication.

As you arrive at CSC, you may notice that a lot of work is being com-

pleted to improve CSC’s grounds.

Included in this year’s campus projects are a new central parking lot, an entrance portal at the corner of 10th and Main, a new plaza on the Dean’s Green and windows in the High Rise Residence Hall. In addition, a new statue, titled “The Muses,” will soon be installed east of Old Admin.

Two of the most exciting events of the fall semester will occur shortly after classes begin. Please encourage your relatives to come for a visit for Family Day, Sept. 10. Also, many special activities are planned to mark the centennial during this year’s homecoming celebration, Oct. 1.

In CSC, you have chosen a higher educational experience that rivals those found anywhere, and we look forward to helping you build your dream.

King Library to offer new services for students New study lounge, online resources, and coffee shop among improvements to be offered The Reta King Library in the center of campus provides a place to study, collaborate, read, and even enjoy a cup of Joe. The library contains over 200,000 volumes of magazines, newspapers, journals and books. Not to mention, the library provides electronic access to millions of digital resources, including the Internet, online periodicals, and a wealth of proprietary databases not available through Google or any other search engine. In fact, the King Library is the largest purveyor of electronic information for academics in the Nebraska Panhandle. The ground level of the library houses a student computer lab and laptops are available for use in the library with the campus wireless network.

Recently, the library implemented a new online information resource, Ebsco Discovery Service (EDS) which provides our users with a “one-stop” research tool. EDS, similar to Google, has a single-search box but, unlike Google, the results are all scholarly, peer-reviewed information. Since most students are familiar with the Google platform and prefer using Google for their research needs, the intention was to duplicate the Google platform, while providing our users with scholarly information.

On the Library’s web page at www.csc.edu/library one can find first-class resources, including reference sources, self-driven library tutorials, off-campus library student services, subject guides, email connections for librarian assistance, hours of operation, and other general library information. If the library does not have materials students are requesting, the library can get them through interlibrary loan. Also, if you prefer one-on-one reference service with a librarian, please call (308) 432-6271 (x6153) or stop by and one of the librarians will gladly make the necessary arrangements. STUDENT GOVERNMENT NOTE: The first meeting of student senate is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will have its first meeting 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Scottsbluff room.

Both meetings are open to the public, and all are welcome to attend and observe.

CAMPUS ATHLETICS

Athletic director welcomes new talent I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back the returning students and to offer a big CSC Eagle welcome to all of the newcomers.

Chadron State College is a member of the NCAA Division II and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The RMAC includes colleges and universities in New Mexico, Colorado, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

The conference has a strong history of outstanding athletic programs. The Chadron State College athletic program has produced numerous Athletic and Academic All Americans and our coaching staff places a strong emphasis on academics and character as well as athletic ability.

CSC currently has 11 intercollegiate programs including Football, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Wrestling, Women’s Golf, and Women’s Softball.

An exciting opportunity exists when Men’s and Women’s Cross Country will be offered beginning with the 2012-13 academic school year.

The coaching staff encourages any student who has an interest in participating in a sport to contact him or her for a try out and to discuss the requirements of NCAA eligibility and what is required to be a member CSC Athletics Logo of an athletic team.

This year we have a challenging athletic home schedule and I encourage all students to show their support of the Eagles and attend all of our athletic contests.

Your support of our teams is appreciated and our athletic teams will provide entertaining activities for the entire campus.

Let’s celebrate the 100 years of CSC and start the fall off with a bang. Best of luck to all of you and if you ever have any questions my office door is always open.

Campus resource officer provides safety tips

Health services information: CSC Student Health Services is located in Crites Hall 009-013 (South wing of garden level). Hours M-F 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Phone: (308) 432-6232; Fax: (308) 432-6085.

Student Health Services houses the Nurse – Ann Dockweiler (Crites 012), Counselor – Jerry Cassiday (Crites 011), Intern Counselor – Kelissa Lein (Crites 010), and will soon have a new Medical Assistant (Crites 009).

The CSC Clinic is a free medical clinic offered M-F from 7 - 9 a.m. at the Chadron Community Hospital. Appointments are made through contacting Dockweiler at (308) 432-6022 or (308) 430-3419. A Physician’s Assistant and the CSC Nurse staff the CSC Clinic and there is no office visit charge to see the PA. We also have common lab tests such as Strep, Mono, UA dip etc . . . at no charge. If you need lab or X-rays those services are available through the hospital and will be billed to you or your insurance.

New immunization recommendations: If you have never had Chickenpox and have had one vaccination against Chickenpox (Varicella) a booster dose is recommended in order to make sure you are protected.

If you had a Meningococcal vaccination before you were 16 years old a booster dose is recommended if you are not over 21 years old.

Neither of these vaccinations are required but are recommended. If you have questions please contact nurse Dockweiler at 308-432-6232 or nurse@csc.edu

Welcome New CSC students, and welcome back to everyone, My name is Chris Hughes. I am a police officer with the Chadron Police Department. I am also Chadron State College’s School Resource Officer. I am here to help keep college life on campus as safe and enjoyable as possible. But, remember I am available for more than law enforcement issues on campus. I am also here to help with many different things, from something as simple as providing a reference to a paper, to being a person you can talk over issues with you may not feel comfortable talking with anyone else about.

As this is a special early edition of The Eagle, I would like to offer some tips to keep you and your personal property safe on and off campus.

1. Always lock your dorm room and your car. Take away the temptation for someone to take your stuff.

2. Never go walking or running alone at night. Always take at least one friend, and let someone know where you’re going and how long you will take. Remember to wear bright or reflective clothing.

3. If you go to a party, go with a friend. Always know where you are going and tell Hughes someone where you’re going.

4. Don’t drink alcohol under the age of 21.

5. NEVER drink and drive. ALWAYS have a designated driver, make sure they don’t drink any alcohol, not even one or two. If you don’t have a driver, call for a ride from a sober friend. The Chadron Police Department will give rides if officers are available.

6. Remember it is possible to happen on campus. Crimes from thefts to personal crimes have been reported on campus.

Technology tips for new students from the IT Department: Network now supports wireless internet access on smartphones • Students are issued unique usernames/ passwords for various services, including Sakai, MyCSC, EagleMail, and campus computer access/network registration.

If you have difficulty logging into any of these accounts, please contact the IT help desk at 432-6311.

• Protect your accounts. Be sure to log off of your CSC account on lab computers and all other accounts.

• Check your CSC EagleMail account frequently.

• Learn about the features of EagleMail: • SkyDrive – 25GB of online storage • Office Web Apps – Edit and Share Microsoft Office documents with classmates from your browser • Instant Messaging – Collaborate with fellow students using the IM features of EagleMail • For more information visit: http://www. csc.edu/technology/students/ and click EagleMail • Back up your files on your SkyDrive in

• Downloading copyrighted files? Make sure you have the right to do so! CSC disconnects computers reported by the RIAA. • Be Green! Minimize printing and copying in labs!

• Copies can be made on Canon copiers in the Library Lab and High Rise lab. Copies are paid for by you through your technology fee fund.

• Protect your computer and the campus network by keeping your operating system and anti-virus software up to date. This is a requirement to connect to the campus network.

• Scan your computer regularly with antivirus software. Infected devices will lose their connection.

• When on campus, always connect to the campus wireless network called “CSC”.

• You can register your desktop, laptop, iPad, on the campus network.

Connections from personal smartphones will be provided this year!

Intramural opportunities take shape at CSC This upcoming semester will include several intramural sports that are open for any students to join.

Ashley Dent, coordinator of intramural sports, explained some of the intramural sports students might be seeing this semester.

There will be a flag football team and a softball team this semester. They will start shortly after Labor Day weekend and go until Oct. 6.

The athletics department is also planning on starting a threeon-three basketball season during the fall semester.

Finally, CSC’s athletic department hopes to start either a kickball or dodge ball team. Dent explained that whichever they don’t do in the fall semester, students will see in the spring semester.

Anyone can sign up for this semester’s intramural sports. Each requires a small deposit be paid; however, it is refundable, and thus the sport is ultimately free.

• Stay connected but not via non-CSC routers, wireless or otherwise.

Personal routers and wireless access points are not allowed on the campus network.

• Gaming devices are allowed on the campus network and are your responsibility to connect.

Help desk staff do not provide assistance with these devices. Enjoy them but don’t forget your schoolwork!

Involvement makes community Welcome to Chadron State College! My name is Morgan Nelson, and I’m the student body president at CSC. As we settle in for another year of fun, I have some tips on how to make your year here at CSC successful and fun.

Clubs and organizations are the bread and butter of our campus. As with any functioning community, the best things are achieved when everyone participates. Not only are there great resume builders available, but there are also clubs where you’ll meet your best friends and make the memories on which you’ll fondly look back.

Here at CSC, we have numerous resources as well as faculty who want to help us. Instructors as well as the administration are here to assist with any problems, and in my experience, they will help your club or cause in any way possible.

Of course, if you’re not from around here (like me), you’ll have to get used to the physical aspects of Chadron also. I recommend checking out the scenery and exploring out in the community.

The churches here are very receptive to college students, and by attending church groups or volunteering, you can help yourself and others.

Chadron is a great community to call “home” during the school year.

By putting down some roots and participating on campus as well as in the community, we can all gain a sense of home and belonging.

Currently the Library, along with the college administration and student government, is in the planning process of implementing an Information Library Commons.

This will address student’s needs by bringing together technology, content, and services in an upgraded physical space that provides an engaging environment different from that of a typical library. Included in the library commons renovation (on the first floor) is the installation of a coffee Shop, a faculty learning center, several collaborative study rooms, a computer lab for students in an open area with windows looking onto the campus, and aesthetically pleasing quiet areas with interspersed lounge space.

We hope that your time at Chadron State College is not only an enjoyable, memorable, and fulfilling experience, but also a chapter in your life that prepares you for your future as a critical thinker, a life-long learner, and maybe even a scholar.
