araza@insidetoronto.com A crowd of concerned parents flocked to Earl Haig Junior Public School on Feb. 3 night to attend a community meeting hosted by two TDSB trustees. Ward 15 (Toronto-Danforth) Trustee Jennifer Story and Ward 16 (Beaches-East York) Trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher invited parents with children in elementary schools, secondary schools, the Toronto Catholic District School Board

and French school boards to the meeting. The discussion was meant to share information regarding the TDSB’s recent report by longtime educator Margaret Wilson; a list of directives for the board. Wilson was appointed in November 2014 by Education Minister Liz Sandals to conduct a review of the TDSB. That review culminated into a list of 13 directives sent to trustees from the Ministry of Education.

Story and Cary-Meagher shared those directives with parents and teachers on Tuesday night. But those directives are seen as a hindrance by the trustees. FUTURE DIFFICULTIES “This will make it difficult in the future to work with local communities and their schools,” Cary-Meagher said. The directives, which offer recommendations on TDSB policies and revisions of man-

An “underutilized” space refers to non-essential use in schools like child care or seniors’ programs, and also is based on student enrolment compared to the number of full classrooms. Those schools under 65% utilization are subject to accommodation reviews over the next three years. Story stressed that this “does >>>SCHOOL, page 13

Toronto’s Winterfolk roots music festival will be back for its 2015 edition on the west Danforth next weekend, Feb. 13 to 15. The 13th annual festival will set up shop on five stages in four venues – the Black Swan Tavern, Dora Keogh Irish Pub, Terri O’s and Globe Bistro – located between Broadview and Chester subway stops along Danforth Avenue. The brainchild of noted Toronto roots musician Brian Gladstone, the festival is an all-ages, mid-winter, weatherproof event, where you’ll find the best of urban, blues, rock, jazz, country, folk and roots music, emulating a multi-stage rural summer festival. With more than 150 artists set to perform over three days of the Family Day long weekend (Friday to Sunday), Winterfolk will include special tribute events, an awards ceremony, community stages and various themed musical workshops with something for everyone to enjoy. Apart from a couple of headline shows with nominal admission fees, most of the entertainment is traditionally free.
