Torontonians should Enjoy Toronto more – everyone else does

Write us

T

oronto is a fantastic city! You can do virtually anything your heart desires, and with today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto – Metroland Media Toronto’s newest online Arts & Entertainment portal – you can start enjoying so much of what this great city has to offer – all from a community-focused perspective. Toronto was recently ranked the best place to live, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a unit of The Economist magazine. There were 50 global cities included. Granted, Toronto has ranked high in similar studies before, so it’s no surprise the city welcomes more than 25 million visitors annually, spending more than $5 billion and more than $1.5 billion on food and entertainment. However, what many tourists understand we Torontonians sometimes overour view look, even take for granted. Despite Toronto being conArts and culture sidered one of the most livable in the world, life for the make Toronto a cities millions of people who call world-class city this city home is ‘wake up, go to work, come home, repeat’. There is so much more to hear, see, read, taste, and do from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to Lake Ontario, Parkdale to the Beach. With today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto (www. insidetoronto.com/EnjoyToronto), we’ve taken a look at what was missing from the pages of the local media, and online. What we discovered is there are so many amazing stories about Torontonians starting a band that suddenly becomes huge (Broken Social Scene comes to mind), or a filmmaker who grew up in the city and is now world-renowned (David Cronenberg for one), or an award-winning author who started filling pages in Hogtown (Margaret Atwood for instance). We took all those great stories and put them under one roof: Enjoy Toronto. When visiting the site, make sure to click around the various sections – Hear, See, Read, Taste, and Do – and get an idea of some of the events, movies, music and stories told by Torontonians, both new and old. We build the city we want to live in, and not just in a brick-and-mortar way. The arts and culture scene across the city adds to what a truly world-class city is all about. We owe it to ourselves to get to know Toronto through different lenses; taking in the arts, entertainment and culture builds a better city.

VOCA Chorus heading to Carnegie Hall

E

ast York has been more than simply a bedroom community, producing and nurturing a number of talented people and groups in the arts. One of the most notable of these groups is the former East York Choir, now known as the VOCA Chorus of Toronto. The choir was founded in 1986 by Stephanie PierceyBeames as a mixed voice auditioned ensemble. The choir has grown from the local group it once was, performing in different parts of the East York community such as Leaside, to one that has reached international standing. As part of their maturation and success, the group has reached what many consider to be an important milestone. On May 23, part of the choir will be singing with other groups at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition, Jenny

joe cooper watchdog Crober, the artistic director for the VOCA Chorus, will be co-conducting the Carnegie Hall orchestra during the performance, along with Halifax conductor Pierre Perron. The work to be performed will be Scott Macmillian’s Celtic Mass for the Sea, which reflects Macmillian’s deep love of Celtic music and his unbridled passion for the sea. This performance will be a magnificent one as it will not just include members of the VOCA Chorus, but also members of the Orpheus Choir, the Toronto Beach Chorale, The Annex Singers and the Toronto Choral Society, just to name a few. The performance will also include singers from London Ontario, Peterborough, Kitchener

and Ottawa, as well as others from Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba. In order to fit so many singers and a full orchestra together the performance will take place in the fabled Stern Auditorium/ Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. There will also be three other American choral ensembles performing that evening, along with a children’s choir. The Canadian contingent, under the direction of Jenny Crober, will sing a half-hour excerpt from the Celtic Mass for the Sea. Crober is looking for more enthusiastic and experienced choristers who would like to perform at Carnegie Hall on May 23. There will be two Toronto rehearsals on Saturday, April 18 and Saturday, May 9, with the registration date being extended to April 30. You can contact her at

416-463-8225 or 416-9318224. More information about the VOCA Chorus can be found on their web page at www.vocachorus.ca Those who cannot travel to New York City to take in this memorable performance can still catch the choir locally on Saturday, May 2 at the Eastminister United Church on Danforth Avenue. The theme of the evening will be Stage Song II, featuring songs from the stage, operetta, opera and musical theater. The evening promises to be full of music that will be both moving and fun, with a number of surprises in store that will please you. I will write about that evening of song and music in more detail when it comes closer to the date of performance. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at eym@insidetoronto.com

Lowering your Car Insurance can have Devastating Results effects on both an emotional and financial level. You may think you are such a great driver that the Indy 500 is second from knocking down your door. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really matter. If some joe shmo (that is the legal term) hits you and you or your family member is injured badly, and good old joe has 1 million of coverage, you only have 1 million to access. Now, this is where it gets complicated so pay attention, if you have 2 million and he has 1 million, your insurer will kick in the extra million. So basically if your policy has 2 million you are covered for 2 million regardless of the insurance policy of joe shmo. Make sense? The best thing to do is speak with a broker. Make sure you have enough insurance to cover you if you are hit. Think about how much you would need if you could never work again. This is a very real possibility for some of my clients. Then once you have that number, make sure you are covered for that amount. Yes, insurance is already expensive, however saving money could cost you dearly later. It may seem strange given that I spend my days fighting against these very companies on behalf of injured plaintiffs. Let me explain why. Most people in Ontario have 1 million in coverage. Sounds like a lot right? It’s not at all. If you are in a car accident with minor injuries that is more than sufficient, however, if you are involved in an accident where you cause someone else major injuries (e.g. brain injury, paraplegic, quadriplegic) then you are on the hook personally for everything over that 1 million. Davenport Diamond public panel

Metrolinx is set to reject an official request from the city to have Toronto’s chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat sit on an upcoming public panel studying options for improving the Davenport Diamond rail-crossing lands. Before a council vote approving the request took place, Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said while city staff is providing “key” assistance for the project, the panel itself should be open only to local residents.

opinion

Traffic monitoring has a price One of the big problems that Mayor John Tory came into office promising to solve was also one of the most ubiquitous: traffic. He started out strong and without even a council vote behind him, rallying city staff and law enforcement into a blitz against illegal parking during rush hour, and very quickly claimed at least anecdotal success. It was harder to quantify, though, because as it turns out the city doesn’t really do much to reliably monitor the intensity of rush hour traffic. It looks as though that’s about to change. O n T u e s d a y , To r y announced the city would be looking at high-tech ways to monitor traffic density, pedestrian congestion, bicycle efficiency, all of that. How? Big Data. This, of course, is a simple phrase for a complexity of information about all of us provided by everything from bank transactions to web-page visits – but principally, in this case, by our smart phones. The idea is to use the smart

david nickle the city phone networks that help us use our navigation functions to tell traffic planners where we are, and what we’re doing. So whether it’s a crowd of us trying to decipher the scramble intersection at Yonge and Dundas, or a line of us trying to manage a left turn at Yonge and Sheppard, city traffic planners will know. Big Data For the purpose of traffic management, it’s a powerful tool. Unchecked, it is a privacy nightmare. Of course, Big Data is unchecked. Edward Snowdon, currently hiding in Russia, provided evidence of just how unchecked it is. Huge amounts of information about our private lives are neatly filed in NSA (National Security Agency) computers in the United States. Almost as much is in the hands of

Google and Facebook and even of the developers of games about angry birds, and those little flashlight apps on our smartphones. We signed the end user agreement on that information a long time ago and barely realized it. Given that, maybe it’s worth it to allow a little more information about our whereabouts to be collected and collated, so the city can manage its traffic light energy grid more efficiently and keep streetcars running more effectively. It is naïve, however, to expect that Toronto will be able to access that kind of service without giving up quite a lot of the presumed privacy of its citizens – and particularly as the city engages private sector data mining firms to do the work, it’s unreasonable to think the best ones will limit their measurements to the amount of time it takes to drive the Don Valley Parkway from Queen to Eglinton at four on a Tuesday. Everything has a price.
