Student helps out children at local gymnastics program Amanda Cyr nomined for Ontario Junior Citizen Award ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Amanda Cyr is helping young children find balance in their lives.

The 18-year-old East York student has been involved in gymnastics since she was 18 months old. Now she’s passing on her love for the sport to underprivileged kids.

Cyr, who was a competitive gymnast for nine years, developed a free gymnastics program for children who don’t have the means to pay for classes.

East York Gymnastics fund The East York Gymnastics Children’s Funded Program was launched in January.

Cyr also provides free private lessons to a six-year-old girl who has a physical

disability as a result of a brain tumour.

“Being in a private class really has allowed her to develop her skills at her pace,” Cyr said of the girl.

“Over the course of the last 10 to 12 weeks she’s developed a lot. Her balance and coordination have improved dramatically.”

Raised funds Cyr raised funds for her gymnastics program through various means, including by turning to local businesses.

The Grade 12 student at Branksome Hall school also volunteers at Toronto East General Hospital.

“Balancing volunteering was definitely challenging at the beginning,” she said.

“But it’s definitely worth it in the end when you see the result and the joy that it brings other people.”

Cyr, who plans to attend university in September and hopes to become a pediatrician like her mom, was nominated for the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards.

The awards are sponsored by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association, of which The East York Mirror is a member.

“It was a surprise to me. I wasn’t expecting it all,” she said of the provincial honour.

“I definitely didn’t set out to do all of this volunteer work for the sake of being nomimated...but I’m really honoured and really appreciative that my work is being appreciated.”

Breathe new life into old clothes for free at the f i r s t To ro n t o C l o t h i n g Repairathon.

Residents can bring slightly damaged clothing to be mended free-of-charge by volunteers this Saturday at Artscape Wychwood Barns, 601 Christie St. “There’s been lots of repair stuff happening worldwide, things like repair cafes, even permanent spaces, and I liked the idea and thought we should have something here,” said East York resident Michael Fagan, organizer of the event.

“The repair cafe thing has taken off a lot, it started off in Europe,” he added. “I think Calgary, which started one a few months ago, is the only other one in Canada.”

Waste nothing Fagan also runs www. wastenothing.ca. The website helps people figure out what to do with unwanted items, to keep things out of the trash.

“I walk around a lot in the city and see so many things going unnecessarily wasted, so it’s my effort to turn the tide,” he said of the site.

“It’s great to have something like that, but I also wanted to do something a little more hands on.”

And so was born the Toronto Clothing Repairathon.

Clothing and linens made of common fabrics, with small holes, rips or missing buttons, are most appropriate for the event.

People are asked to wash items before bringing them for repairs, which will be limited by available supplies.

“Most municipalities, if you do an analysis of the waste stream, after recyclables, and organics, textiles is often the third, or close to the biggest item in there,” he said. “We don’t all have the sewing knowledge that we used to a couple of generations ago, and most people would be surprised to learn how easy it is, so hopefully we can help show them that.”

Fagan’s group is appealing for donations of sewing supplies, especially thread, as well as a sewing machine, to help with the upcoming event, and others it hopes to hold throughout the city.

Volunteers’ machines will be used until the group gets its own.

Fagan hopes his initiative will expand past clothing.

“My sort of expectation is volunteers will jump in and start arranging some of the additional events, and it will be a broader thing than just myself,” he said.

Don’t keep cards close on casino

n Monday Mayor Rob Ford rolled snake eyes – twice.

First, it was the only day for public deputations on the controversial report by city manager Joe Pennachetti on the pros and cons of building a casino in Toronto.

Second, it marked another attempt to stifle debate with Ford limiting deputations to three minutes from the customary five.

This is not the time to limit discussion on a topic of such great importance to Torontonians. Deciding to build a casino in Toronto is not a NIMBY issue, not solely an economic issue and not a societal issue. It is all of these, and limiting debate is a bad play on the part of the mayor and his executive committee.

The very tenet of Pennachetti’s report is to weigh the pros and cons of building a casino in the city.

Issues that attract an increase in public interest need more debate – not less. To lessen presentation time is also to lessen a speaker’s ability to state their case – whatever that may be. And on a contentious issue like this – however painful it may be to those listening – it’s even more important for those making deputations to have the ability to state their case.

Many speakers will be against a casino in the downtown core. But there are also voices who support a casino – like representatives from Woodbine racetrack, who are open to expanding their facilities in north Etobicoke. Unfortunately, a location downtown – Exhibition Place or the Metro Toronto Convention Centre – seems ideal for those willing to build a casino.

Councillors and the mayor were elected to do the will of the people. Unfortunately, this is not what’s happening here. It would appear those in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough don’t mind building a casino in downtown Toronto – they are the mayor’s base, not those who live downtown.

It’s unfortunate this debate is another failed attempt by the Ford administration to hear from the public on a topic that has polarized the city.

A vegetable a day not for this columnist

I

f it’s true that you are what you eat, then it’s safe to say I am definitely not a vegetable.

I can’t remember the last time I had one.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but if you want to keep me away, you can substitute that juicy apple with just about any vegetable.

Take Brussels sprouts, for example. I can’t stand them.

Same goes for cabbage.

I don’t care for eggplant or beets, either.

I’ve never tried any of them, mind you. They just all look like I won’t like them.

I’ve got a special knack for not liking vegetables that I’ve never sampled.

I like to think of it as an acquired taste, developed over years of not tasting.

I also hate cauliflower, which I‘ve never eaten either. Hot or cold.

(For those keeping score at home, I hate hot cau-

And if you offer me some rhubarb? I’ll pass, thanks.

I break out into hives just thinking about them.

My friends find this odd because not only have I never eaten rhubarb, I don’t even know what it looks like.

Rhubarb recognition In fact, I wouldn’t recognize rhubarb if it hit me over the head with a rutabaga. I would recognize the rutabaga however, which I despise even more, even though I‘ve never had one of them either.

Let’s see, what am I leaving out?

Oh yeah, Swiss chard.

Whatever that is. That just sounds like I won’t like it.

And don’t even ask me

about spinach.

Not only do I not like to see spinach on my plate, I don‘t like to see it on anybody else’s plate either.

I’m not just talking about the dinner table, either. I don’t even like to see it in the same area code as I am. You know I’ve moved three times over the years because of spinach?

Oh, I could go on and on, but space is limited, so I will leave you with my absolute worst favourite vegetable of all: asparagus. It really gives me the creeps.

Though my dislike for all the others may appear to be irrational, I come by my contempt for asparagus honestly.

It all goes back to my childhood. You see, when I was a kid, I had a friend who told me if he didn’t eat all of his asparagus at dinner, his mother would hide it in his favourite breakfast cereal the next morning.

Can you believe that?

Being tricked into eating something as scary looking as asparagus? By his own mom, no less?

It gave me nightmares, I tell ya.

Cocoa Puff check Mind you, I never bothered to ask him how she could camouflage a big, long, green thing in a bowl of white milk.

Or what’s even more ridiculous, how he could possibly mistake it for a tiny flake.

What can I say? He was three years older than me, so I just took his word for it.

Kids, right?

Oh, by the way, I still look for asparagus in my Cocoa Puffs today – just to be on the safe side.

We are the reason transit lacks funds

T

he Toronto Region Board of Trade weighed in, and then came Metrolinx. Next week, Toronto councillors will begin to talk about a made-in-Toronto plan to raise the tens of billions of dollars it will take to cover the costs of public transit expansion.

Both the business group and the provincial transit agency have proposed a broad range of revenue tools as they’re called, for public transit. Toronto’s recommendations are narrower.

For the first wave of Big Move transit expansion plans, city staff are recommending four possible ways to pay for transit: dedicated development charges, an additional fuel tax, parking levies and sales tax. The politically dicier options of road tolls and a vehicle registration tax reintroduction would show up in later years.

Reaction from Mayor Rob Ford was swift and unequivocal following Tuesday’s release of the recommendations.

He wouldn’t support any of them.

That’s something the mayor and the guy who heads the committee in charge of the roads haven’t indicated.

To sum it up: This, Toronto, is why we can’t have nice things.

The reality is that for some time now, things haven’t been very nice at all when it comes to getting around the city. Gridlock on the roads is paralyzing; public transit, particularly the subway system, is suffocatingly overcrowded; and the reason for this is simply enough that it is all underfunded, and has been for decades.

Or to put it less kindly: we have been underfunding it for decades.

We elected politicians on the promise of reduced and frozen taxes and the elimination of small fees and charges, on the willfully-ignorant assumption we might maintain or even increase the services we need and want.

Collectively, we have been fools.

At least Perks has made it clear he’ll support the measures in the end.

Corporate taxes should pay for transit plans To the editor: It is with increasing alarm that I listen to Metrolinx, Premier Kathleen Wynne and others talk about new “revenue tools” to fund transit.

A number of new taxes, as well as rate increases to existing taxes, are being proposed. Increasing the gas tax is one of them. This tax was put in place specifically to fund transportation infrastructure.

Through this tax, Ontario drivers already pay 24.7 cents per each litre of gas. Not only that, but when HST was introduced in Ontario in 2010, government ended up with an annual windfall of millions of dollars in additional gas tax revenue. Last year the gas tax generated almost $4 billion. Where has all this money gone?

The tolls on 400-series highways is another revenue tool being proposed.

The timing is all wrong here. Toronto and Brampton drivers are already struggling with high cost of car repairs, 407 tolls, record high gasoline prices as well as highest car insurance rates in Canada.

Many are barely able to afford to keep their vehicles on the road. Any additional tolls will cause undue hardship to many

families in this area. Also, a lot of people with minimum wage jobs may find that increased transportation costs will make it too expensive for them to travel to their jobs and may decide not to work. This may further slow down our already slow and sputtering economic recovery.

Increases in sales and property taxes as well as an increase to TTC fares will put further brakes on our economy by decreasing disposable incomes and thus demand.

What I find really puzzling is that almost without exception all of these new taxes are regressive and it is the working people who will bear the heaviest burden of paying for new transit. Is that fair?

And while everyone will be affected, has anyone considered the impact of these new taxes on “the working poor”, retired people and others on fixed incomes?

Why aren’t we talking about a new corporate or business tax? After all, a reduction in gridlock will benefit businesses by lowering their transportation costs. Should an increase in a corporate tax rate not be considered?

transit station feedback sought wPape The TTC wants to speed up Pape Station renovations and is asking for public feedback on an extended spring closure.

To get the work completed

by September, the TTC wants riders to weigh in on either closing the station for 12 days straight or over six consecutive weekends.

Another option is keeping Pape open, but that will delay completion of the renovations until December.

The station’s second exit construction, located east of Lipton Avenue, is also scheduled to be done by December.

s Leaside’s 100th birthday approaches, many local residents might be surprised to learn the former town was once home to a bustling airport.

Leaside became a town April 23, 1913 and in the early 1900s, its Leaside Aerodrome was a hot spot for flying enthusiasts north and south of the border.

The Leaside Aerodrome was built and opened in 1917, on 220 acres of land that now sits between Wicksteed and Eglinton avenues.

It housed nine hangars, living quarters, mess halls, instructional and repair facilities, and a hospital.

One of five Canadian airfields built by the British government that year, it was a school for the Royal Flying Corps Canada, a

training arm of the British Royal Flying Corps. It was built to train pilots, mechanics and maintenance crews to fight in the First World War. To build the airport, a concrete street named Government Road was constructed to bring supplies from Yonge Street, as there was no Leaside bridge then. The road still stands, now known as Merton Street, McRae Drive and Wicksteed Avenue.

After the war, many airfields closed, but Leaside continued to operate, albeit on a smaller scale, as Laird Drive had been extended north of McRae Drive, downsiz-

ing the airport to approximately 160 acres, and causing most of its buildings to be removed.

Only four hangars were left standing on the south side of the original site, one of which would become the birthplace of the Toronto Flying Club in 1928.

After the Toronto Flying Club moved in, a small clubhouse was built, along with a canteen, an Imperial Oil office and fuel supply.

Leaside Aerodrome was the site of Canada’s first airmail delivery on June 24, 1918, when letters were flown in from Montreal.

A heritage plaque commemorating the event can be found at the southeast corner of Brentcliffe Road and Broadway Avenue.

Once regular air mail service began in 1928, the airport would also be used to send mail from Leaside to Ottawa, Buffalo and Montreal for a short time.

Leaside Aerodrome officially closed in 1931, when the Toronto Flying Club moved out.

The airport was revived briefly, from 1942 to 1944, when it became Royal Canadian Air Force Station Leaside, a radio direction finding school used during the Second World War. After the airport closed, roads were extended through the area, which became home to industrial businesses. In 1971, Leaside Aerodrome’s last hangar was removed.

Along with the plaque, the only other reminder left of the Leaside Aerodrome is the honourarilynamed Aerodrome Crescent, southeast of Eglinton Avenue and Laird Drive. n The East York Mirror thanks the Canadian Aviation Historical Society’s Toronto chapter for its help compiling this article.

The Leaside train station was a busy hub for more than 75 years. The railway played a key role in how Leaside grew and was developed.

rom pristine farmland to prosperous town to popular suburb, Leaside rode the rails all the way.

On April 23, 1913, the Town of Leaside, with its 43 residents, was incorporated by the Province of Ontario, at the request of the Canadian Northern Railway, after the Town of

North Toronto and old City of Toronto both refused offers to include Leaside in their boundaries.

William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, owners of the Canadian Northern Railway, had big plans for Leaside. They moved their company’s rail yard there from the Don Valley, purchasing more than 1,000 acres of land.

To finance the project, they hired planner

Frederick Todd to design a town around the yard, with residential plots they could sell for profit.

“They started building all this stuff, a big locomotive repair shop and a huge yard – you know, a big freight yard, a roundhouse, all the kinds of stuff that the other railways had downtown,” said railway historian Derek Bowles, from the Toronto Railway Historical >>>STATION, page 15

leaside 100 >>>from page 14 Association. “It was going to be the Canadian Northern Railway’s principal locomotive shops for repairing locomotives in eastern Canada ... The only problem with this was that by 1917, the Canadian Northern Railway was essentially headed towards bankruptcy.”

To keep it afloat, the Canadian government took over the railway, which was later merged with others to form Canadian National Railways, which already had a yard in Stratford. “It was never as important as was intended when the thing was built,” said Bowles.

“The big locomotive repair shop was abandoned by the Canadian National probably in the 1930s, and it was used by a variety of businesses, and now of course it’s the new Longo’s grocery store.”

While Canadian Northern Railway gave way to the Town of Leaside, it was the Canadian Pacific Railway that allowed Canadian Northern to put Leaside on the map. The Canadian Pacific Railway, by way of the Ontario and Quebec Railway, was the first to lay tracks in the area, on land purchased from William Lea, son of John Lea, the area’s first settler. Canadian Pacific Railway opened a passenger station there in 1894, which it called Leaside, after William Lea. “The old station burned down in the 1940s after World War Two, and they built a brand new station,” said Bowles, noting the new station cost $145,000 and opened Nov. 23, 1946. “All Canadian Pacific TorontoOttawa and Toronto-Montreal passenger trains stopped at Leaside, until these trains were curtailed in 1966,” Passenger service ended at Leaside in 1982, when VIA Rail’s Toronto-Havlock train no longer stopped there, Bowles added.

esidents are invited to take a walk down Leaside’s memory lane next Tuesday in honour of the community’s 100th anniversary.

An archival exhibit will be unveiled at 9:25 a.m. on April 23, 100 years to the day of the township’s incorporation, at the Leaside Public Library, 165 McRae Dr. Everyone is welcome to attend the event, where Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne will bring greetings and congratulations, along with MP John Carmichael, TDSB trustee Gerri Gershon and TCDSB trustee Angela Kennedy.

The Leaside 100th anniversary celebration archival exhibit, The Layers of Leaside, explores the former town’s history from today back to the dawn of time, explained Geoff Kettel,

Leaside 100 committee member.

“The thing about Leaside, is it went through so many layers, so many stages of development,” said Kettel.

“It actually was an agricultural settlement, it was a railway town, it was a suburb and today it’s a thriving midtown community, so it’s very interesting.”

Six layers Six layers of Leaside are documented in the exhibit.

The first layer looks at Leaside pre-history, before European settlers arrived.

The second layer looks at the arrival and life of pioneers and settlers who came to farm the area, including the Lea and Elgie families, while the third focuses on the creation of the Town of Leaside, and the beginning of industrial development in the area.

The fourth layer documents Leaside’s late indus-

trial era and residential boom, the fifth showcases Leaside’s annexation and development of Thorncliffe Park.

The sixth layer focuses on changes in Leaside from 2000 to today.

“Ours is more of a cultural, historical interpretation,” said Kettel. “We want people to know about the illustrious history.”

The Leaside 100 committee worked with students from Ryerson University’s architecture program to create the exhibit, which will be displayed until April 28 during the library’s regular operating hours.

Following the unveiling will be a reception at Bessborough Drive Elementary and Middle School, 211 Bessborough Drive.

or more than 100 years, the site of Leaside Memorial Community Gardens has been at the heart of the Leaside community.

The location where the recreation complex now stands once housed the famed octagonal brick farmhouse named Leaside, built in the mid 1850s, that would lend its name to the former town and current Toronto neighbourhood. The house, which also served as a post office beginning in 1873, was built by William Lea, the eldest son of John Lea, the area’s first settler.

“The post office was there, so this site, you could say, has been the heart of the community, and it continues to be,” said Allan Williams, community relations chair for the Leaside Gardens board of management. “There’s something about an arena on a Saturday morning when all of the kids and the parents and the community are there, and it really is a hub of the community.”

The Town of Leaside was incorporated April 23, 1913.

One hundred years later, Leaside Gardens is set to get a second ice rink this year, ensuring the community will continue to come together around the spot for many years to come.

is coming thanks to the support of the Leaside community, just as the original rink did in 1951.

“The arena was built with the involvement of sort of the whole community at the time,” said Williams. “It was a very significant community fundraising project at that time, and involved not just individuals, but a lot of groups within the community; the schools, and churches and various service clubs were all intimately involved. That community involvement came into play again when the roof was replaced in the 1970s.”

And it came into play again more recently, when

it became obvious Leaside Gardens needed a second rink. The Leaside community committed to raising $3.5 million to fund the project, with a recoverableloan from the City of Toronto covering the rest of the $11 million tab. More than $3 million has been raised so far.

Community members still have a chance to donate to the project, and even name the new rink. When the revamped Leaside Gardens opens, the original rink will become known as the Bert F. Grant rink, in honour of a $250,000 donation from the family of Grant, whose company built the apartment buildings and homes on Leacrest Road that back onto the arena site.

I

n a span of a few minutes, Leaside Baseball Association president Howard Birnie can recount a handful of tales that, he says, have been told and retold many times over the association’s 67 year history.

But some are too juicy, too humorous to die and, as such, continue to be told.

One such gem that never gets old is the story of former NHL coach Roger Neilson and the apple incident.

“Roger did some very interesting things,” said Birnie who has been a part of the Leaside association since 1964, becoming president in 1973.

“In one game his team was playing one of our Leaside teams and he went out to the mound to talk to his pitcher. While he was out there he gave his catcher an apple that had been peeled. The catcher hid the apple under his chest protector and returned to the plate.

“So there’s a runner at third,” he continued. “The next pitch came in and the catcher fumbled the ball a bit, took the apple from

under his chest protector and threw it over third base.

“The runner, who thought the apple was a baseball (flying overhead), began trotting in to home.

“The only thing was the catcher still had the baseball,” leaving the opposition and the umpire to digest what had just transpired before them.

The always colourful Neilson, who coached for North Toronto at the time, ultimately went on to coach Leaside’s bantam and

midget divisions to championship titles before switching sports and coaching junior in the Ontario Hockey League and, eventually, a career as an NHL coach.

Then there’s the one about legendary local baseball umpire, Archie French, and his violent run-in with a moth hovering above home plate at Howard Talbot Park.

“He was a great umpire and a very funny guy... He sees this

moth flying around the plate, stopped the game, got out his hat and he whacked the moth, knocking it to the ground. He stepped on it then he buried it,” he said.

“He then did the sign of the cross and got on with the game.

Everybody laughed; everybody knew he had a great sense of humour.”

Because of Talbot Park’s proximity to Bayview and Eglinton avenues, some players have been known to ding the odd baseball over the fence, sometimes into traffic.

“There was one time a ball got hit over the fence and there was a bus going by and the ball bounced through the window of the bus,” Birnie said.

“The bus just kept going so we figure it was the longest home run ever hit... the bus probably ended up somewhere in the west end,” Birnie joked.

There has been no shortage either of players that have moved on to fame in one respect or another after toiling in the league as a coach and/or player.

Major leaguer Ron Taylor and Ron Roncetti – Roncetti founded the Leaside league – both went on to further baseball success after

Leaside.

Taylor as a pitcher in the majors for 11 years who went on to two World Series titles, and Roncetti as a long time pro scout in the majors.

Some, like Neilson, ultimately switched to hockey after leaving.

Peter Mahovlich, Dave and Paul Gardner, Jack and Terry Caffery, Pete Conacher and Mike McKeown are all former players in the league.

Even actors – Sean McCann, who has appeared in more than 150 movies and coached in the league and actor Jordan Pettle, as a player in the league – have spent time coaching and playing for Leaside before moving on to acting careers.

Carmen Bush, a Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee who Birnie calls the “godfather of baseball in Toronto”, coached Leaside’s senior team after the west end league he was operating folded in 1968. Bush, who died in 2001, then joined Leaside and became an invaluable organizer.

But they will have to wait for another day to protest the proposed development after councillors decided to put off discussing the project because the developer’s application is incomplete.

The proposed plan would see Garden Court, a rental community at 1477 Bayview Ave. south of Millwood Road made up of 10 buildings containing 104 rental units in 78 apartments and 26 townhouses, converted to condominiums.

Wicksteed commercial proposal wbuilding

A developer hoping to build professional offices and a showroom in Leaside has been told to provide the city with more information.

Bousfields Inc. is hoping to build five two-storey multi-tenant buildings including a stand alone retail showroom, containing a maximum of 104 units, at 195209 Wicksteed Ave. southeast of Eglinton Avenue and Laird Drive, according to a planning report presented to North York Community Council at its meeting last week.

Executive committee supports downtown casino DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee has voted 9-4 to go for a casino in downtown Toronto, and expanded gaming at the Woodbine racetrack in north Etobicoke.

The vote came at the end of a two-day meeting, which heard from more than 100 members of the public, and showed a significant rift in the mayor’s inner circle on the issue.

Four executive committee members voted no to opening the door to casino gambling in the city’s downtown: public works committee chair Denzil Minnan-Wong, Don Valley West Councillor Jaye Robinson, planning and growth management committee chair Peter Milczyn and government management committee chair Paul Ainslie.

Mayor Ford urged his committee to support the plan, dismissing reports from

the city’s Medical Officer of Health and others pointing to a suite of social problems a casino might bring to the city, including an increase in gambling addiction. jobs “I just don’t buy these arguments — they don’t exist,” said Ford. “They might as well ban food for fat guys like me.

We need the jobs — we need the convention centre. People need to have self control.”

Ford maintained the plan put forward by city manager Joe Pennachetti was a good one for Toronto. Pennachetti estimated a casino in downtown Toronto would bring as many as 10,000 jobs to the city, and if the province agreed to his hosting fee formula, could bring in upwards of $141 million in revenue a year.

As well, he pointed out if the casino were not located in Toronto, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation

would almost certainly locate it in a neighbouring municipality.

That would complicate matters for Toronto’s other casino-like operation — Woodbine racetrack, which hosts 3,000 slot machines.

The committee eventually endorsed the expansion of gaming at Woodbine as well as the downtown location.

But there was dissent.

Pa u l A i n s l i e s a i d h e’d spoken with his constituents in Scarborough East, and determined the casino would be bad for Toronto, and not deliver everything it promised.

“I appreciate that there are 10,000 jobs supposed to come to a downtown casino,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of concerns about the level of income.”

Jaye Robinson likewise had heard from her constituents.

“My constituents are opposed to a casino downtown or on the waterfront,” she said. “I’m uncomfortable

about some of the details — too much of the report is unclear.”

Other councillors heard differently.

“I don’t support casinos for myself, but I was elected to support the decisions of people in my ward,” said Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson. “When I speak to

some of my constituents and I say, ‘Would you like to pay more taxes?’, they say, ‘No, I’d rather gamble.’”

The committee also endorsed a number of amendments.

The committee endorsed a request the city manager talk with the province about merging Exhibition Place with Ontario Place.

Pennachetti said he has had informal conversations with the province regarding this possibility, and if council approves the amendment then he will ramp up those discussions.

The matter will go to Toronto Council in May.

Residents of Bain, Blake, Boultbee come together for healthy community The Residents of Bain, Blake, Boultbee (ROBBB) hosted their first event Sunday to make their neighbourhood a healthy one.

About 150 people attended the event at the Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre on Blake Street, which featured Toronto Argos Matthew Black and the Grey Cup. It also featured residents coming together to pool resources, said Karen Paul, chair of ROBBB. The 15-week program, a continuation of the TPS’ Summer Safety Project, kicked

off Oct. 15 and wrapped up Jan. 27.

Each police division was tasked with examining its needs and coming up with a tailor-made plan that best served the needs of its residents, said Const. Rob McDonald of 55 Division’s community response unit earlier this year.

“Everybody is doing it a little differently,” he said, explaining that in 55 Division, two teams each consisting of four constables and a sergeant were assigned to patrol the Blake-Boultbee and Rivertowne areas nightly with the aim of eradicating violent crime and its causes.

While ROBBB was formed in response to safety aspects in the community, Paul said the idea of the group is to create a healthy community.

“If neighbours know one another and are working together to realize shared ideas, values and goals, then individuals are more likely to have a sense of pride in their community and be willing to

speak up for the preservation of health and safety within the community,” Paul wrote.

POSITIVE IMPACT The event, the first for ROBBB, is a great start, said Paul, who is excited to see what the group can do.

“It’s a great neighbourhood to live. There are a lot of people living in the complex and there is a sub-culture that exists everywhere.

“How does the aboveground stuff (events, people sharing ideas, values and goals) positively impact the sub-text?”

Another aspect of Sunday’s event was the asset mapping where resident Anne Didier asked people to come up what they were good at, which in turn allowed them “to recognize the wealth of personal, physical and community assets at our disposal...,” Paul said.

3D ads could soon be on bus shelters RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Three dimensional digital advertising could soon appear on TTC bus shelters following a vote by the city’s public works committee.

The committee voted 4-2 at its recent meeting to recommend the installation of the colourful, static, LCD ads as part of an update of the city’s contract with Astral Media, which designs, installs and maintains new street furniture such as bus shelters in exchange for a share of advertising revenues.

The company scaled back advertising on its information pillars following a public outcry. Despite opposition from some committee members worried about safety issues arising from potentially distracting advertising on bus shelters, committee chair Denzil Minnan-Wong said such concerns were little more than an attempt to discredit Astral.

“I think there’s some members of council who are unnecessarily vilifying the city’s partner,” said MinnanWong following the meeting.

“They seem to quite easily the millions of dollars that have been invested by Astral and put into city coffers.”He said the city stands to generate 32 per cent of every dollar earned through advertising revenue above a threshold of $1.5 million.

But committee-member Janet Davis, who wanted to defer a decision on the proposal, said the city won’t see a dime even if the threshold is reached for at least five more years when the contract reaches its tenth year.

“What we’re going to see is 400 bus shelters with video advertising and Astral gets all the proceeds,” said Davis.

Davis said increasing opportunities for advertising would only lead to more “dangerous and distracting clutter” in bus shelters. “Bus shelters need to be visible, both for drivers and passengers. It’s a safety issue.”

City council will consider adopting the committee’s recommendations on digital advertising and the updated deal with Astral when it meets next month.
