The Don Valley Art Club is celebrating its 65th anniversary and hosting its annual Spring Art Show and Sale to kick off the milestone. More than 70 artists will be exhibiting 140 paintings that are new, unique and original artworks said Vince Luong, exhibition co-ordinator for the show. “It’s an opportunity for us to share with the community all of the works we’ve created over the past year,” he said. Leaside launches 100th birthday celebrations Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com It ends up Leaside turns 100 on May 7, but on Tuesday, the former town’s centennial birthday celebrations went ahead anyway, and it was a birthday to remember. The day before, Leaside

100 organizers got word their celebrations were pegged for the wrong day. For years, many people believed the Town of Leaside was founded April 23, 1913. It turns out that’s the day the bill to establish the town passed its third reading. The Town of Leaside was officially born May 7, 1913.

Un a b l e t o re s c h e d u l e Leaside’s birthday party, the show went on in style. The day began at the Leaside Public Library with the unveiling of Layers of Leaside, the Leaside 100th anniversary celebration archival exhibit. A who’s who of people from Leaside, Toronto and the prov-

ince packed the library for the unveiling, including Don Valley West MPP and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, who spoke fondly of Leaside. “This is a progressive community with a real sense of itself,” said Wynne. “I am so proud to represent this community.”

Also on hand for the event was Don Valley West MP John Carmichael. “This is a wonderful opportunity to gather and celebrate Leaside,” said Carmichael. “There’s so much that we have to celebrate. It’s a strong community … It’s a community that >>>leaside, page 7
