Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W
hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

Harper is the only issue in this federal election
M
y personal history contains an interesting fact, and that is during my childhood and adolescence I lived within walking distance of the home of a future Prime Minister of Canada, Steven Harper. Harper began his life in Leaside, living on Bessborough Avenue, attending Northlea Public School during his early childhood. My own family’s home was on Berney Crescent, which while being down the road from the Harper household, was still within the boundaries of my neighbourhood. My family decided to move to Etobicoke, which was undergoing a housing boom and so did the Harper family around the same time. Interestingly enough they decided to live on Princess Anne Crescent, which again turned out to be down the road from where my family was living.
joe cooper watchdog However, once Harper and I reached adulthood, our lives diverged in our choice of universities to attend, occupations to pursue, and what our political outlook would be. Rather than staying in Ontario as I did, Harper headed out west to pursue a career working for Imperial Oil as his father had done. I raise all these points because it is interesting to see the person behind the public image that all politicians create for the public. Everyone has a history and it is interesting to see how much one’s family and community do influence one’s personal growth and outlook. My own family came from a working class background, and while successful enough to live in a community like Leaside,
they still imparted to me a set of social values that recognized the need for a social safety net and a strong government. Harper’s father worked for Imperial Oil as an accountant, with the result being he came to identify strongly with the values of the private sector of the economy. More importantly, and a point that is often forgotten when discussing Harper and his politics, is the fact that he also came to identify strongly with a political movement that has been called Western Alienation. It was out of a sense of political isolation from Eastern Canada that this small group of right wingers formed the Reform Party, in which Stephen Harper was a key member. This group later evolved into the Canadian Alliance party, which was responsible for the demise of the federal Progressive Conservative party. What we have now,
under the leadership of Stephen Harper, is by no means the Conservative Party of Sir John A. MacDonald. Indeed, I believe that this new Conservative party represents a set of political values that are far out of step with many of the values that Canadians have built up over our history. Worse, I believe that many people who do vote Conservative do so thinking they are voting for the party of John Diefenbaker or Brian Mulroney, which no longer exists. Where the Conservative Party of Canada actually sits in the political spectrum, what values they actually represent politically, and how Harper will govern if his party maintains a majority is the only real issue in this federal election. WANTED 30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test
During this Limited-Time event, we are looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally disscree reet open-fit and IIC models shown here:
Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.
It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Baseball games remember life of Georgia Walsh Event will help Trace Manes Park, which young Leaside girl loved SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com The tragic death of seven-year-old Georgia Walsh sent a tremour of grief throughout Leaside one year ago. Georgia was walking home from a visit to the Leaside library when she was fatally struck by a minivan while she was crossing the intersection at Millwood Road and McRae Drive, legally, at a green light. “She was begging me to walk home on her own. We had done it so many times, she knew the safety rules,” said Jillian Walsh, Georgia’s mother, in an interview last week with The East York Mirror. Walsh had intended to travel by car alongside her daughter but it was rush hour and Georgia managed to escape the attentive of eyes of her mother, walking further ahead on. “I heard an ambulance and my first thought was that it was Georgia. I just knew,” Walsh said. She ran down the street to see Georgia lying on the pavement. “Her eyes were open, she wasn’t conscious and I remember thinking she looked at peace,” said Walsh. “It felt like your life just got turned upside down. You realize that two seconds can have a lasting impact on your life forever.” Walsh is left with a terrible final memory of her daughter, but it is not this memory that has endured since the accident July 16, 2014. Loved people Georgia loved talking to people. She was well acquainted with the dogs in the neighbourhood, knowing all their names and breeds, said Walsh. She was an observer by nature and loved to watch the neighbours come and go through her screen door, calling out to say hello at any given chance. She loved baseball but was, ironically, terrible at it, Walsh said. But that didn’t discourage her from playing catcher. “The day she played catcher was the best day of her life. She loved it,” said Walsh, adding the family are big fans of the Toronto Blue Jays. “She was a strong willed, independent and passionate girl. What she felt and experienced in her seven short years was very intense and fulfilling for her,” she said. “This is so backwards – you aren’t supposed to outlive your children. I channel my pain and grief into being grateful that I had her for her seven years,” Walsh said. This is what has motivated the Walsh family to launch the Georgia Walsh Memorial All-Star Games, a baseball tournament intended to raise funds to revitalize Leaside’s Trace Manes
Photo/COURTESY
Georgia Walsh, 7, died last July after being struck by a minivan at Millwood and McCrae in Leaside. A baseball tournament this month in her memory will help raise funds for Trace Manes Park.
Park, which Georgia loved to go to. Since Georgia’s death, the Walsh family has received a lot of community support. In the first few weeks after her death the community raised $109,000 for The Hospital for Sick Children. Since then, a campaign called Go Fund Me initiated by a family friend also raised $36,000 toward the Trace Manes park rejuvenation project. Rejuvenate park So far, the community has raised $135,000 towards the $1 million goal to rejuvenate the park through the addition of a splash pad, making the park, at 110 Rumsey Rd., more accessible to those with disabilities, and installing new playground equipment that will include special needs equipment. “This memorial all-star game is twofold for us. It’s a tribute to her, to do something she loved, and it’s a way of giving back to the community,” said Walsh. The Georgia Walsh All-Star Games will be Saturday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Trace Manes Park. Walter Gretzky, Christine Simpson and a surprise appearance by a Toronto Blue Jays player are scheduled.

Man who extracted blood from patients facing number of charges Police have arrested a man on fraud and assault charges stemming from an alleged bogus naturopathy and osteopathy clinic in East York. Between October 2012 and July 2015, a clinic operating under the name Toronto Alternative Medical Practice was situated at 2558 Danforth Ave. at Main Street. needle. He claimed the blood would be analyzed at Fry Laboratories in Scottsdale, Arizona. Police said the lab denied having contact with Toronto Alternative Medical Practice. Dennis Robinson, 67, of Toronto, was arrested Wednesday, July 29, and charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 and two counts of assault. Police believe there may be other victims. Hitman fans can enjoy an adrenaline-filled stunt show based on the upcoming video-game-turned-movie’s Hitman: Agent 47, and snag a collectible Agent 47 barcode temporary tattoo. Prizes from The Martian, starring Matt Damon, will be up for grabs, too. The Toronto Star Kids’ Fun Zone also offers movie fun. Kids can have their photos taken and transported into a scene with their favourite characters from The Peanuts Movie, and become one of The Chipmunks with the help of a voice-modifier, ahead of the release of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. Taste of the Danforth kicks off with the Danforth Dash Bed Race, presented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, in support of the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, teams will square off tournament-style to see who can push their hospital bed the fastest. The race happens on Danforth, two blocks east of
Broadview Avenue. Many special guests are racing and participating, including NHL players Jason Spezza and Cody Hodgson, Canadian Olympic medallists Dylan Moscovitch and Cherie Piper, Canadian Paralympic medallist Jeff Adams, Toronto Marlies player Rich Clune and Mayor John Tory. People can donate online at http://foundation.tegh. on.ca to support the race and its teams. In addition to supporting the bed race, the Greek Town on the Danforth BIA donates proceeds from Taste of the Danforth to the TEGH Foundation. The event has raised more than $2 million for the hospital so far. The festivities will also kick off with an opening ceremony at 8 p.m. Friday at the celebrity stage. People are encouraged to share festival photos on social media using #Taste2015

Opportunity for SRCHC to expand near Pape and Danforth >>>from page 1 Workers are in the process of renovating a former Hakim Optical store at 1245 Danforth Ave., east of Greenwood Avenue, into an SRCHC satellite location. For the last five years, the SRCHC (headquartered at 955 Queen St. E. at Carlaw Avenue) had been using space at Alternatives – The East York Mental Health Counselling Services, which is next door to the old Hakim store, for its diabetes program. Since then, the 39-year-old organization has been casually looking to lease or rent commercial space in the city’s east end to provide even more
programming and services. The opportunity recently presented itself with Hakim Optical relocating westward to the Danforth-Pape area. “We’re tight for space for programming at our Queen Street location…We can’t shoehorn people in here anymore,” said Lynne Raskin, SRCHC’s CEO, during a recent interview. “We just needed more space because there’s a demand for more programming.” Raskin said the new location is ideal because it’s just steps from the subway and much closer to where many of the people they serve live.
“A lot of the work we’re doing is moving north,” she said of the SRCHC, which serves east-end residents living in an area bounded by O’Connor Drive to the north, Lake Shore Boulevard East to the south, the Don Valley Parkway to the west and Coxwell Avenue to the east. “(The new location) is very convenient. It’s very exciting and it’s a good news story for us.” With a limited number of smaller meeting rooms and one main meeting space at its Leslieville facility, the time had come to have more space of its own for a variety of uses, Raskin said.
“This is actually a space that will belong to us,” she said of the new 1,600-squarefoot accessible space with a community kitchen, a large meeting room, washrooms and office space. No additional funding has been obtained to help pay for the location, Raskin said, noting the SRCHC factored the cost of this project into its budget. Applications have
been submitted for additional funding to help cover costs. The SRCHC’s satellite location should begin offering programming by late September. The South Riverdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) is a communitybased organization that offers primary healthcare services and health promotion programs to a diverse
community. In 2014, it served more than 7,800 clients. Programs and services are offered mainly in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Urdu/Hindi and French are also spoken. Interpreters for other languages are available.

TTC ponders fare hike to offset budget shortfall DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com T h e To r o n t o Tr a n s i t Commission’s long-held $3 adult cash fare could be among the fares to rise in 2016, as the commission’s budget committee asked for a report including that and other options last week. The fare hike would help deal with a $99 million shortfall that’s predicted for 2016 — soaking up about $30 million of that. Report sought
Buy and sell in your neighbourhood.
The committee is asking for the report to look at a number of scenarios, including hiking Metropass fares and having the fare increase entirely borne by the cash fares, as well as simply spreading the fare increase across various media. It will also study the impact
that the Presto fare card will have on fare structure once it’s implemented at the end of 2016. TTC Commissioner and city councillor Joe Mihevc, who sits on the commission’s budget committee, said it will be a “very, very delicate issue.”
of the tunnel it is the Presto card, which will be solidly in place by the end of next year,” he said. “You can raise fares by two cents if you want to take it from the Presto card. That will allow for more variability.”
‘Difficult’
Mihevc said that he hasn’t given up hope on persuading Toronto council to increase its subsidy to the TTC, and somewhat fainter hope in convincing the provincial government to fund the TTC operations. “But when the province and the city weigh in there are only two strategies left — one is to raise fares, and one is to cut service,” he said.
“It is true that many people from vulnerable communities find three dollars hard enough in and of itself — and you can’t raise it 10 cents, you’ve got to raise it at least a quarter. And yet raising it is a damn difficult thing to do.” Mihevc said that at the same time, raising the fares on tokens and Metropasses can’t bring them too close to the cash fare, or people will simply start paying cash. “If there is a light at the end
