Withrow Park nominated as one of Canada’s great places Rebecca Field rfield@insidetoronto.com Hang out in Riverdale’s Withrow Park for a day and you’ll find out it brings together a community with a diverse range of interests. Sit on one of the park’s many benches at dawn and you’ll spot

people finding their inner zen through the fluid movements of early morning yoga or tai chi. Walk along one of the parks many pathways at lunch and you’ll see dogs and humans alike chasing soccer, baseballs, ball hockey or tennis balls. Stick around for nightfall when local artists make their

debut in Dusk Dances or Shakespeare plays. Come back in the winter when the park is full of tobogganers trekking through the snow. It’s these among many other reasons that Withrow Park has been nominated for the Canadian Institute of Planning’s

“Great Places in Canada” competition. Riverdale resident Kristin Olson, who is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planning, nominated the park in the competition, which is taking votes online all summer. “This really is a special place >>>residents, page 12

East Ender Julian Taylor is set to take the Broadview stage at the Pilaros Taste of the Danforth festival this Friday through Sunday. He will be bringing a combination of Soul, Rock and Reggae sounds with the Julian Taylor Band, now in their fourth year at the festival. “Because I live in the neighbourhood, I’m just really, really excited that a lot of people can come and check us out,” said Taylor. “My child can come to see a concert, which is great. It will be the first time she gets to see her dad play,” he said of his twoyear-old daughter. The festival will include food from all along the Danforth, as well as a mix of entertainment including Egyptian belly-dancing with swords, salsa dancing, Urban-style Burlesque and local favourite bands such as Riverdale, and Stiletto Flats. “I just hope people really enjoy the music,” said Taylor who will be releasing both a studio album with his band later this year or in early 2014, as well as an acoustic album. “I just want people to listen to it >>>JOY, page 15

Blueberry cooking demo at Evergreen Brick Works

CELEBRATION: Chef Donna Dooher of Mildred’s Temple Kitchen leads a blueberry cooking demonstration at the Evergreen Brickworks on Saturday in celebration of Wild Blueberry Month. One of the items she prepared were minature wild blueberry pancakes.

Dog owners celebrate parkette’s new off-leash area Rebecca Field rfield@insidetoronto.com Mans’ best friend has a reason to celebrate after a new dog park opened in Riverside. The Thompson Parkette off-leash dog park opened Friday thanks to community advocacy and a petition signed by both pets and their owners. “I love the park, I think it’s absolutely great,” said Michael Waterfield, owner

of dog, Precious, who was the first to sign the petition at the opening of Joel Weeks Parkette in September 2012. “It’s a beautiful, great big space.” Waterfield, along with community members Guy Matorin and Dana Harrison, rallied in the community with flyers, pamphlets, a facebook page and a petition hounding the city to give their dogs an off-leash area separated from Joel Weeks Park.

“The density in the area is growing considerably,” Waterfield said. “We just thought it would be a good space to utilize for dogs.” The park was in response to the opening of Joel Weeks Parkette down the street at Thompson Street and Carroll Street. “Being really conscious that a lot of people moving into the neighbourhood do have dogs (and) to make sure that they weren’t all in the Joel

Weeks Park and there’s room for kids and families and no pressure between dogs and people,” said Councillor Paula Fletcher as to why the dog park opened. The park was initially going to be used for more condo development, but the campaigning by these community members brought attention to the need for more space for pets, she said. “A lot of folks have dogs and this is the place they want

to be,” said Fletcher, noting there has been an increase in neighbourhood dog owners due to the growth in condo development in Riverside. “This is a big city, it’s modern, it’s very urban, and this is the way we should be building our city,” Fletcher said. The Thompson Parkette is now the eighth off-leash area in Fletcher’s constituency. “They told us (after the opening of Joel Weeks

Parkette) that we weren’t allowed to have another dog park,” Fletcher said. “We said ‘Well let’s get everybody together, put some pressure on, because we really do need an off-leash area.” “We really did have to fight kind of hard for this one, but I think it was sure worth it,” said Fletcher.

Sustainability rooted in city

Write us

I

t’s a city tradition, rooted in agricultural beginnings, and it’s just around the corner. Starting Aug. 16 and running through Sept. 2, the Canadian National Exhibition takes over the lakefront at Exhibition Place. An annual event, it’s one that typically marks the end of the summer. Hard to believe it’s almost that time of year again. As issues of sustainability gain an increasing foothold in the public consciousness, it’s important large-scale events – including ones like the Ex, which generates $60 million in economic activity for Toronto – take a leadership role to reflect this change. The Ex proudly boasts the title of “greenest fair in North America.” According to event organizers, for the past three consecutive fairs, the CNE has been awarded Eco Logo certificaour view tion – the first large-scale event in North America to achieve this Agricultural designation. Much has changed since the opportunities fair began in 1879. Today its agricultural elements – which this abound year includes interactive features such as magic show Agri-Magic and farm tour AgVenture – are part of a much larger array of offerings. But while the range of features to the nearly 1.4 million expected to attend the fair has increased, its agricultural roots remain. But in the city, it’s not just events like the Ex where one can experience agriculture. Here in Toronto, it’s heartening to see a number of positive sustainability initiatives emerge around urban farming. There’s the Toronto Urban Farm, located at Jane Street and Steeles Avenue at Black Creek Pioneer Village, which opened last year. It’s a partnership between the city and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority that teaches youth and the community about urban organic farming. There’s the residential fruit-picking program Not Far From the Tree, which partners volunteer pickers with property owners who have trees ready for harvest. The yield is split between the property owner, the volunteers and a local social service agency. Tips on how to start a community garden are available on the city website. On a small scale, there are plenty of ways to improve your community through sustainability. Whether it’s by joining a community group in your neighbourhood or lending your time and expertise to a community garden, the opportunities are there.

column

We’re back into daylight losing time Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings folks, but it’s now official: the days are getting shorter. Not the 24-hour days. They’re still 24 hours, last I checked. Not to worry. I was referring to the days part of days. The sunlight part. Sadly, they’re dwindling as we speak. Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you, but it’s better you heard it from me than a stranger. Not that daylight losing time should come as a surprise to anybody. The same thing happens every year at this time. You can set your watch to it. (Actually you set your watch to daylight saving time, not daylight losing time, but you know what I mean.) The point is: if we know the days always start getting shorter at the very same time year after year, why does the transition always sneak up on us? That’s a good question

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY and one I’ve given a lot of thought to lately and I believe I’ve come up with at least three contributing factors. The first is that the fading sunlight happens so gradually in its initial stages it is barely perceptible to the naked eye. It’s such a subtle transformation you feel it before you actually visibly process it. So you know you feel differently, but you don’t know why exactly. The second is that with the growing fascination and dependency on technological devices in our daily lives, each year we tend to get more and more out of touch with the natural things around us. The third and the biggest factor, for my money, is the impact of global warming. Due to the balmier and

balmier weather, which seems to start earlier and earlier every year, we’re all getting sucked into thinking it’s going to be endlessly sunny all the time. Which brings us to the matter at hand. Though I too am well aware fading sunlight is an inevitable occurrence as we inch our way toward the fall, it’s always a struggle for me to accept. That’s because, for me, sunlight and summer go hand in hand. And sunlight first thing on a summer morning sets the tone for the whole day. The earlier it’s out, the better, I say. Ditto for sunlight at the end of a summer day. The later it lasts the better, too. I get the same jolt from the joy of light still visible on the way home each day that I do on the way out first thing in the morning. The only difference is that in the morning sunlight energizes me and the

evening it revitalizes me. So what’s a fella to do as we move farther and farther away from sunlight when we wake up and sunlight when we go home and closer and closer to darkness when we wake up and darkness when we go home? Don’t sweat the same stuff, that’s what. Just keep taking things one step at a time, mindful that things will work out just like they always do. That’s because no matter how bleak things may look now, as sure as summer turns to fall, fall will turn to winter, winter will turn to spring and spring back to summer. In short, before you know it, once again, you’ll be able to see the sunlight at the end of the tunnel. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Crackdown on illegal use of e-bikes

T

oronto police have launched a monthlong crackdown on the illegal use of motorized electronic bicycles, commonly known as e-bikes. Police began handing out tickets to ebike users for improperly using infrastructure intended for regular bicycles. City bylaws do allow the vehicles to travel in bike lanes and park trails, but only if the bike’s motor is turned off. The fine for not doing so is $305. The crackdown will last until Saturday, Aug. 31. The TTC chair hit back at a newspaper editorial decrying political interference in transit planning. Posting on her personal blog, Councillor Karen Stintz took a recent Toronto Star column by Toronto Region Board of Trade CEO Carol Wilding to task, insisting politicians should make the final decision on the fate of a transit project, and not Metrolinx, to keep the best interests of taxpayers in mind.

YOUR WORLD IS UNLIMITED

“Metrolinx continues to ask the city for input because it (the city) understands that building political consensus is paramount for better taxpayer investment into public transit,” Stintz wrote. Goodman Trail addition wMartin

The latest addition to the 56-kilometre path running parallel to Lake Shore Boulevard is between Yonge and Lower Jarvis streets. According to Waterfront Toronto, the trail addition is intended to complement a newly opened sidewalk in the area and provide a safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians. The addition was ready by the end of July. For more information, visit www.waterfrontoronto.ca

While Holyday has never been anything but partisan, he’s proved essential to the Ford administration, delivering in negotiations with unionized workers what could be some of the most lasting changes to the way the city does business. That Holyday would win in a riding that had been confidently Liberal for a decade isn’t surprising. That Ford’s candidate should lose in a riding to the east of there, in spite of everything... well, if a mayor’s word means anything in influencing a vote, that is a bit of a surprise. Ford and his family have been a-courting in

Scarborough since the 2010 municipal election. Ford promised and could well be on the cusp of delivering a subway there. Scarborough folk were lined up through the trees at his first-ever Scarborough FordFest party. Personally, he polls well there too. Yet he could not transfer that combination of elbow grease and pixie dust to influence a provincial vote. It might be that the office itself doesn’t hold much influence. When Ford’s predecessor David Miller waded into federal elections in a less partisan way, he tended to pick candidates in individual races that had a decent chance of winning. Mel Lastman, a savvy political operative from way back, knew enough to stay out completely. It might well serve as a sobering lesson to the Fords, who obviously enjoy campaigning and do seem to have a knack for it: regardless of how much fun it is out on the hustings for some other level of government, their energies might best be applied to dancing with the ones that brought them, and doing the job they were elected to do.

M

uch has been made of Mayor Rob Ford’s deliberate and enthusiastic involvement in the two provincial byelections that recently took place in the city. Over the course of the campaign, Ford stumped and shouted, alleged corruption, berated, paraded and, of course, endorsed two candidates from the party of his late father. He put as much energy into the enterprise as one might expect a mayor to put into mayoral duties: so much so that he caught the disapproving eye of the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Glenn Murray and raised the ire of Ford’s executive-committee ally Peter Milczyn — both of whom were trying, without success, to plant a Liberal flag in the riding of EtobicokeLakeshore. Mayor Ford might take some of the credit for preventing that, and decisively helping his Deputy Mayor, Doug Holyday, deliver the first Toronto Progressive Conservative seat in a decade. The claim would be more credible, of course, if he’d been able to do the same for the PCs in ScarboroughGuildwood. It might be more reason-

Residents can vote for park in national contest

>>>from page 1 just by how well it is used, morning noon and night,” said Olson from her Logan Avenue living room, which has a view of the southern end of the park. The park is more than 100 years old and spans more than 21 acres. This space is host to two playgrounds, a wading pool, a clubhouse, a dog park, a hockey rink — which is also open in the summer for ball hockey — a soccer field, a baseball diamond, volleyball and tennis courts and a campfire pit. The park also hosts a farmers’

market each Saturday from May to October. “When we were looking at the house, I was like ‘Oh great, there’s a park,’” said Olson who moved into the neighbourhood two years ago with her husband Matti Siemiatycki and son, Oliver, who is now three. Since then the family has welcomed daughter Isobel, who is now six months old. “We’re at the playground every day. We go to the farmers’ market a lot.” The competitions runs until Sept. 23. It’s an annual competition that sets out to highlight great places across Canada, as nominated and voted for

Joy of Dance among local Taste of the Danforth performers >>>from page 1 and enjoy themselves. Taylor plays more than 200 shows a year, including Monday night jams at Dora Keogh Irish pub on the Danforth. “We just get really, really excited to get to play a show out of doors,” said Taylor. “He has a magical voice,” said fan and event organizer Jennifer Jones from the Joy of Dance and the Danforth BIA. “You know how there’s certain voices that just speak to you? His is mine.” The event is organized by The Greektown on the Danfor th BIA, and the Danforth BIA and showcases local Toronto talents and restaurants. Jones has been on the board for the past five years. “I think what my favourite part about putting the whole stage and why I volunteer my time and put this all together is to really showcase the talent in this neighbourhood. For people to really realize all of the different types of music

that are playing in all of the different establishments, the talented residents that are in this neighbourhood,” said Jones. Her own dancers from Joy of Dance will also be performing a mash-up of dance styles inspired by the movie Pitch Perfect. “It’s just a mecca of talent that is right in the Riverdale n e i g h b o u r h o o d ,” s a i d Jones. “I think what people love about outside and such a public space is your talent or your product that you’re delivering has a chance to reach people who might not otherwise see it,” said Jones whose school teaches both professional and recreational dancers of all ages with more than 90 classes a week. “It’s a really neat and organic way of getting someone’s attention because if they don’t like it, they keep walking – you know how well you’re doing immediately. If you’re not performing from Broadview to Jones, you’re

not bringing it.” Along with the entertainment, there will as always be lots of food and refreshment available for those attending this year’s Taste of the Danforth. Also, an attemp to set a Guinness World Record for largest yogurt bowl and largest Zorba Dance. Parmalat Astro Yogourt, will be building a yogourt container more than five feet tall, holding more than 1,300 pounds of yogourt on Sunday at noon at the corner of Pape and Danforth. The previous world record was set in 2010, by Fair Cape Dairies in South Africa, with a height of 4.53 feet, and contained 1,133 pounds of Rooibos yogourt. Ten thousand participants are expected to join the Zorba Dance at 1:40 p.m. on Saturday. Bandanas will be on sale for $2 with proceeds to prostate cancer research.
