Elias Tsokas, a dance teacher from Levendia X, leads a group of people in an attempt to break the Guinness world record for most people performing a Zorba Dance in one place at one time during the Pilaros Taste of the Danforth festival.
Taste of the Danforth sets records The 20th annual Pilaros Taste of the Danforth ended up being a record-setting event. Attempts were made to set Guinness World Records in two categories at last weekend’s festival – most people participating in a Zorba Dance and largest yogurt bowl – and both were successful. Also, organizers said this year’s festival broke past atten-
dance records with an estimated 1.5 million people attending at some point during Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Zorba dance The Zorba Dance record attempt was made on Saturday afternoon, and blue and white bandannas were sold to participants to confirm the number of
dancers and to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Canada. The dance began at 1:54 p.m. and concluded at 1:59 p.m. Organizers said participants had to dance for the whole five minutes to qualify for the record and the unofficial number of dancers was pegged at 7,835. The previous record was 5,614 set in Volos, Greece last year.
The largest yogurt bowl record setting event saw the festival, in conjunction with Parmalat and their Astro Original Greek Yogourt, build the record-breaking container, which was 5.515 feet tall versus the previous record by Fair Cape Dairies in South Africa at 4.528 feet tall. The container, including >>>BIG, page 11
Two men were critically injured following a shooting and stabbing in Thorncliffe Park Monday. Police said shots were fired during an altercation among four to five men at a plaza near Thorncliffe Park Drive and Overlea Boulevard around 8:25 p.m. A 23-year-old man received gunshot wounds and stab wounds. Another man was also stabbed. Both were taken to hospital for treatment of lifethreatening injuries. Police are seeking the public’s help in the investigation and are asking anyone with information to call 53 Division at 416-808-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477). Also, police are investigating after medication was stolen from a vehicle in East York Tuesday. Police said the theft happened in the Woodbine Avenue and O’Connor Drive area between 1 and 1:30 p.m. The drugs were in a white paper prescription bag. Stolen were Percocet, Oxycodone, Elavil, Novo-Clonidine, Sandoz Bupropion, Prevacid, Senokot and Apo-Tramadol/Acet. Police warn the drugs could be harmful or even fatal if ingested.

Speed up coroner’s inquest process
O
ntario’s chief coroner has announced an inquest into three shooting deaths by Toronto police involving people who were carrying edged weapons and “may have been experiencing the effects of a mental disorder at the time of their deaths” over the past three years. The similarities to the fatal shooting of Sammy Yatim, 18, on a streetcar in the Dundas and Bathurst streets area on July 27 are many. The coroner’s inquest set for October will look into the deaths of Michael Eligon, 29, in February of 2012 in East York; Sylvia Klibingaitis, 52, in North York in October of 2011; and Pickering resident Reyal Jardine-Douglas who was shot after stepping off a TTC bus on Victoria Park Avenue in August of 2010. It’s too bad inquests were not called earlier as the question of how police deal with people who may be having a mental health crisis is an extremely important issue which needs clear and consistent guideacross Ontario. our view lines As it stands, Ontario’s Ombudsman Andre Marin is set SIU director to review the Yatim shooting. The province’s Special Investigations first called Unit (SIU) is also looking into that shooting to determine if police for inquest actions were justified. In the shooting deaths of Eligon, Klibingaitis and Jardine-Douglas, the SIU said the Toronto police officers were justified in using lethal force. However, it’s important to note that in its report in May of last year into the Eligon shooting, SIU director Ian Scott said the incident raised a number of questions beyond his organization’s mandate. He said those questions would be best answered by a coroner’s inquest. Among Scott’s questions were: Should front-line police officers receive different training to deal with these situations and should front-line police officers be issued Tasers? In the Eligon shooting, the front-line officers responding to the call did not have Tasers. They also did not have access to the services of a crisis intervention team consisting of a mental health professional and specially trained police officer to help deal with such situations. The same scenario played out in the Yatim shooting. A crisis team was not on hand and the officer with the Taser did not board the streetcar until Yatim had been shot. We called for such an inquest in a May 2012 editorial and while we’re pleased action is now being taken; it should have been called sooner.

Municipal political parties not wanted
O
ne issue in the recent provincial byelection that caught my attention was the way that political parties were openly linked to current municipal politics. Current provincial law forbids the open involvement of political parties in municipal elections and the politics of those elected. Apparently some people want to see that changed. The rational for such “reform” is that many members of mainstream political parties are already visibly linked to a municipal office. The example previously given was former mayor David Miller. Some media commentators persisted in calling him “the Socialist Mayor” by pointing out he had a membership with the New Democratic Party. It reached the point that he let his membership lapse so such claims would no longer be valid and he could be politically neutral. Still, there are proposals
joe cooper watchdog in discussion among some politicians, particularly conservatives, that all political parties be allowed to put forward slates of municipal candidates who will campaign for their party platform. The justification given for this “reform” is that with Toronto being so big, only mainstream political parties can offer a single unifying vision for growth and development that voters can clearly choose from. Others argue party politics would bring discipline to the sometimes-rowdy ranks of our councillors, resulting in a majority of these councillors finally working in unison towards a common goal. The problem is that this proposal is about as sound as the one used to justify amalgamation; which, if you remember, promised to
make the city work better while reducing duplication and bringing us great cost savings at city hall. Most people have forgotten the current provincial ban on municipal political parties was used to keep “the Socialists” and other non-mainstream political groups from gaining power at city hall. This occurred back in 1942, when the CCF party (for-runner of the NDP) ran a slate of candidates with a well-defined platform and clear political identity. The political establishment of the day had a fit, saying that party politics was an attack on municipal political freedom and Canadian democracy because “left-wing party bosses” would take firm control of city hall. The outcome that “political crisis” was the entrenchment in provincial law of the principal that all municipal candidates were to be “independent”, or at least try to appear so.
However, with the amalgamated city of Toronto stumbling from crisis to crisis as was predicted by its opponents, today’s political establishment has come to believe that the city can only work properly with “the right people” in charge. Obviously to achieve this goal you need the harnessing power of a political party to get those “right people” into office. However, do we really want our municipal politics to come to this? During our forced municipal amalgamation we were deigned any real choices. If political parties are to be brought into municipal politics, then it must be done so by choice, with a vote cast by citizens through a binding referendum. Not imposed with a back room decision, again. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at eym@insidetoronto.com

Mayor will miss Doug Holyday
I
n a couple of days it’ll be official. Doug Holyday, the former mayor of Etobicoke, councillor for Ward 3 (Etobicoke Centre) and deputy for Mayor Rob Ford will have left the building, to become Toronto’s lone Progressive Conservative MPP at Queen’s Park. Will Ford miss him when he’s gone? Based on Holyday’s agile defence of the mayor’s nocturnal ramblings last weekend at the Taste of the Danforth? Almost certainly. The mayor has been in this apparently inebriated place before: in this case in a state that most reasonable observers would surmise to be impaired, alone, near his SUV, looking for a party and finding one amid a gleeful crowd of east-Danforth revellers and their snapping, filming cellphone cameras. Social media was abuzz; the mayor’s colleagues on council, aghast. Once again, Toronto’s news
david nickle the city media gathered outside the elevator in front of Ford’s office, to follow up on Ford’s assertion Sunday on radio that he’d just had “a couple” of beers and the whole thing was blown out of proportion. Holyday came out swinging, suggesting that those media – and presumably the good people of Greenwood and Danforth – were exaggerating the mayor’s condition, hounding him as no other politician has been hounded, and he worried about the “toll” all this attention would take on the mayor. When a reporter asked: what about the “tone” of the mayor’s behaviour, Holyday feigned lawyerly mystification at what that word meant. When another reporter asked about the seemingly sloshed mayor’s proximity
to his vehicle, counselcum-deputy-for-the-mayor Holyday demanded to know if the journalist was accusing Ford of driving drunk and if he knew that to be so for a fact. The only bone that he threw (at least the only one not aimed at an eye) was acknowledging that the mayor might not get enough sleep sometimes, and should get a driver. When Norm Kelly, Holyday’s named replacement, spoke with the media just hours before the mayor’s arrival on the Danforth, he made it clear that he was fundamentally interested in the well-being of the city and left it at that. Other allies on the executive committee weren’t much more supportive following the Friday night crawl. There are few such as Holyday left on council who will defend the mayor. He’ll be missed all right.

Cutting number of councillors good idea for City of Toronto To the editor: Council absolutely needs to reduce the number of politicians. Politicians want to expand for more job security. Taxpayers are looking to
survive the constant barrage of regulations and increasing financial burdens, so politicians can enjoy their higher pays and job security. By the way, we moved to Toronto from Florida and
found you can’t wash your car in your driveway or the street. I wonder which politician got paid by the car wash industry to push such nonsense. Mike Papacosmas
Liberals continue to buy teachers’ support To the editor: It seems that another incentive to “buy” the teacher’s support includes a $5,000 retirement bonus for those waiting until December or January to take their leave. Now we learn that the
Toronto District School Board will have to lay off or hire fewer teachers to cover the additional cost of these folks staying on for an extra four months. Who suffers? The pupils who are attend-
ing the schools and their parents. The lengths the Liberals will go to buy teacher support is mind boggling. Anne Robinson
Suspend police officers without pay To the editor: I was a serving member of the police force in my country of origin. During my service, and still, when a policeman is
suspended he receives no pay. In the event of him being cleared of any charges, then he will be paid for the time of his suspension. It makes no sense sus-
pending a policeman with pay because during that time he could be earning another salary. Kenneth Singh

Director documents Gerrard Street East; pre-gentrification Rebecca Field rfield@metroland.com A drive down Gerrard Street East shows an amalgamation of Toronto’s history – from bars like the Maple Leaf Tavern to the colourful sari shops of the Gerrard India Bazaar. Businesses nicknamed “the kick and stab” by locals for reasons that nobody even remembers are fleeting, as shops continually go up for lease. One local director is setting out to document the bluecollar neighbourhood before gentrification can reach the rest of his familiar childhood landmarks. “The last few years, I’ve noticed it’s been changing quite a bit. I’m not sure if it’s for the better or worse,” said Kire Paputts, who is planning a series of short documentaries about Gerrard Street East, which he started filming last week. “I’ve just noticed lately that about one-third of all

Kire Paputts is documenting the neighbourhood along Gerrard Street East before the gentrification that he expects to kick in over the next few years eliminates most of the businesses he grew up with.
the businesses are empty or for lease and noticing all these other things moving in like trendy cafés, which were never there,” said Paputts who grew up and lives near
Gerrard Street and Coxwell Avenue. “Like three years ago it was all kind of more divey, sketchy blue-collar, which I kind of like in a way,” he said.
This isn’t the first Toronto documentary Paputts has done. He’s recently been showing a documentary on Toronto’s punk music movement in the
1970s called The Last Pogo Jumps Again in various festivals including at Canadian Music Week in May. “I think we’ll kind of lose what is here now, so I wanted to document that before it disappeared,” said Paputts, noting the Maple Leaf Tavern at Gerrard Street and Pape Avenue has now closed down and was sold. “That’s been there since my dad was a kid in the neighbourhood,” said Paputts. Paputts also mentioned that even two of the four Coffee Time cafes in the neighbourhood have closed down recently. “I think it (the neighbourhood) gets a bad rap in general, that people think it’s really divey. To an extent it’s kind of true, but it’s also kind of fun.” He finds it unusual when people from the west end venture into the area. “I like the idea of my neighbourhood kind of being a place that people don’t always come,” said Paputts.

“It’s kind of like my secret little piece of the pie.” Paputts plans on interviewing both new people to the neighbourhood, as well as those he recognizes after almost 30 years of living along Gerrard Street. “Since I’ve been filming I’ve had people come up to me,” said Paputts who studied at Ryerson University in their film arts program. “They’re really curious about what I’m filming, and it’s been really positive.” He will be starting interviews this week just by hanging out in the neighbourhood, and he’s looking for people of all ages and backgrounds. “I like the idea of having all different walks of life in a neighbourhood,” said Paputts. “I think you need that in a neighbourhood. It gives it some colours so it’s not just all Starbucks and galleries.”

AN NEW EW KI KIND ND OF C CHOIR HOIR FOR FOR...NON-SINGERS. ...NON-SINGERS.
Food and fun at Taste of the Danforth
Choir members singing, laughing & having a blast at a session.
When it comes to feeling more energetic, positive and relaxed, Sharon Ricci thanks her newfound passion: singing in a choir. Anyone who knows Sharon will be surprised to hear that. Why? Because until joining My Pop Choir, Sharon would say: “I am not a singer. But I love to sing, mostly in the shower and the car, of course!” So how did she make the leap from “fear of singing in public” to “loving being in this choir”? Sharon credits the comfortable and fabulously fun My Pop Choir, the fastest growing group of ‘everyone’ choirs in Southern Ontario.
larly good singer but together we sound great!”
According to Jacqueline Curtis, the founder of My Pop Choir, “You don’t need experience, musical skills or even know how to read music and there are no auditions or solos. The experience is about fun, energy and comfort. You leave your worries at the door when you come to a My Pop Choir session.”
Etobicoke choir member, Bob, said “Joining My Pop Choir was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Just learning a great song like California Dreamin’ together, in harmony, with everyone is amazing but then there’s this sense of community you feel when you’re gathered together singing, laughing, making mistakes and then getting it.”
Choir members agree that there are tremendous physical and psychological benefits to being a part of My Pop Choir. “It’s virtually impossible to think of anything else when you’re at a “YOU DON’T NEED SINGING EXPERIENCE OR KNOW HOW TO READ MUSIC AND THERE ARE NO AUDITIONS OR SOLOS. THE EXPERIENCE IS ABOUT FUN, FREEDOM AND LEAVING YOUR WORRIES AT THE DOOR.”
session. It’s therapeutic! There’s almost as much laughter at My Pop Choir sessions as there is singing,” says Oakville choir member Jenny Anderson. “No one thinks they’re a particu-
Asked where the idea of My Pop Choir came from, Jacqueline says that she is like other My Pop Choir members. “I love to sing and looked for something like this; a place where I could feel comfortable, not feel judged, sing pop and rock, not religious songs. I couldn’t find what I wanted, so I created it.” Clearly Jacqueline wasn’t alone. My Pop Choir started in September 2011 with 1 choir and has since grown to 7 choirs with over 300 members in the GTA!
The first two sessions are free Pop-Ins so you can see if My Pop Choir is for you. There’s nothing to lose, but your stress. For more info and to register for a Pop-In or for the whole term go to www.mypopchoir.com. The 10 week fall term for all choirs starts the week of September 9th. The Riverdale choir sessions are on Tuesdays beginning September 10 from 7 to 8:30 pm. MY

East York, Leaside teams set for CNE peewee baseball tournament SEAN DURACK active@insidetoronto.com An annual rite of summer for many rep peewee baseball players in the province, the venerable Canadian National Exhibition’s peewee baseball tournament, from Aug. 16 to 29, is heading in to its 57th year. And, as usual, Toronto will be well represented. Organizers have tinkered with some aspects of the 32-team, single-knockout tournament over the years to address changing trends and shifts in demographics across the city and province. Several years ago organizers introduced a seeding system to help eliminate disparity and reduce the use of the “blow out rule” at the triple-A tournament. This year organizers have taken things a step further by introducing A-level teams into the fold. “For the first time ever we have pre-selected eight
teams from rural or smaller Ontario centres. Generally, they compete at the A-level as opposed to triple-A,” said Marvin Pearl, a retired high school gym teacher and a tournament organizer for the last 30 years. Those A-calibre teams will begin the tournament competing against each other for the first two rounds in a single-elimination format. “By the time they get to the quarter-finals they will come up against stronger teams.” The losing team in the quarter-finals on both sides, explains Pearl, will play in a consolation game called the Ron Pegg Cup. Ron Pegg is a long standing tournament committee member and a former executive with the Ontario Baseball Association. “The demographics from year to year, the number of peewee aged kids changes in some areas is the difference. Sometimes they can’t
come up with a team so our numbers tend to fluctuate every year,” he said. This is by no means an indication of waning interest. “The enthusiasm and attraction is still there,” said Pearl, adding entry into the tournament comes with free day passes for the Exhibition, which is a big hit with kids. “There have been a dozen coaches over the years that have played in this tournament and one in particular said to me ‘I had a great experience here and I want my players to get that same experience.’” Toronto will be represented at the peewee tournament by North York-A, North Toronto Expos, East York AA, Leaside, Scarborough-A, Scarborough AAA, Martingrove, Bloordale, Etobicoke and Royal York.

Aaron Brown, second from left, trails world and Olympic 100-metre champion Usain Bolt in a semifinal heat Sunday at the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia. Brown will also run Canada in the 4x100 m relay on Aug. 18.
Local runners at world championships Aaron Brown, who grew up in Toronto’s east end, wasn’t on the Canadian relay team that had a surprise bronze medal quickly stripped from them at the 2012 London Olympics by a lane violation. But he will be on the Canadian relay team gunning for redemption at the 2013 Moscow world track and field championships. The race is set for the final day of the world championships Sunday. Brown’s time of 10.15 seconds in the 100m semifinals put him in fifth place behind triple-Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt who won the semifinal heat in 9.92 seconds. Bolt then went on to win the final
in 9.77 seconds. “I got out pretty well, obviously Usain’s (Bolt) acceleration is crazy, I was running next to him out there,” said Brown, following the semifinal heat. “No complaints here, happy with how I performed. I’m just going to focus on 4x100-metres now.” Brown has made it a habit of running into Bolt at the big races, having also raced alongside Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics in the 200m semifinal. Brown just missed qualifying for the Olympic final, settling for ninth place. Brown grew up in the area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street, attend-
ing Bowmore Road Public School. The east end is also represented in Moscow by 21-yearold Cr ystal Emmanuel. Although Canada’s 100m champ and runner-up in the 200m, she will compete in the 200m sprint (heats and semifinals today; finals on Friday) and the 4x100m relay (Sunday). She was born and grew up in Scarborough from 1991 to 1999. She went back to Barbados from 1999 to 2008 before moving back to East York where she has lived ever since, attending Vaughan Road Academy and graduating from East York Alternative School.

Last week, construction crews began relocating overhead power lines along Eglinton Avenue West to pave the way for the removal of constructs belonging to a long cancelled subway project. A makeover of the financial district’s most prominent intersection is nearly complete. New banners and street pole wraps are up at King and Bay streets, part of an extensive streetscape renovation commenced in early summer. Representing the first major undertaking by the Toronto Financial District BIA, the renovation includes new street signs, black metal garbage receptacles to replace the less durable plastic “turtle” bins and a thorough power wash of the intersection’s sidewalk to make the concrete “fresh” again, according to BIA communications manager Tim Kocur.

Coroner’s inquest in Michael Eligon shooting called Shooting of man on Milverton Boulevard among three deaths to be focus of inquest Ontario’s chief coroner says three fatal shootings by police in Toronto form a common cause and will be covered by an inquest this fall. The three persons – shot in East York, North York and on the North York-Scarborough boundary – were all carrying edged weapons and “may have been experiencing the effects of a mental disorder at the time of their deaths,” the province’s community safety and correctional services ministry added Thursday in a release. Cleared by SIU

O n t a r i o ’s S p e c i a l Investigations Unit has cleared police officers of criminal wrongdoing in all three cases. Michael Eligon, 29, was shot on Milverton Boulevard in East York on February 2012 after fleeing Toronto East
General Hospital (TEGH) in a hospital gown, toque and socks. The SIU concluded he had cut the hand of a store owner with scissors, then was carrying two pairs of scissors and refused repeated police commands to drop them. Sylvia Klibingaitis, 52, was at her home on Wedgewood Drive in Willowdale in October 2011, when she called 911 and, according to the SIU, “told the operator she had a knife and was going to commit a crime.” When police responded, Klibingaitis “descended from the porch with a large knife in her hand,” and headed for the officer, giving him no alternative but to shoot, the SIU reported. Reyal Jardine-Douglas of Pickering was “acting irrationally” in August 2010 on a southbound Victoria Park TTC bus, which was then followed

by police. The bus stopped at Biscayne Boulevard, and according to the SIU, JardineDouglas produced a knife, got

off the bus, walked towards an officer and was shot. The coroner’s office expects the inquest to begin on Oct.
Community advocates and TEGH cited Eligon’s death while lobbying a regional health authority to create an East Toronto Mobile Crisis Intervention Team to assist police in situations with persons in distress. The team was approved earlier this year. The circumstances of the three inquest deaths were similar to the shooting death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim by police on a Dundas Street streetcar on July 27, said Victor Willis, executive director at the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre, charging
there was a failure by police in each case to assess and de-escalate the situation. The Yatim shooting is still under investigation by the SIU. Two Toronto officers in April fatally shot a 45-yearold man, who has not been named by police, on Eglinton Avenue in Scarborough as he walked towards them with a machete. The SIU cleared the officers last month. A group called Psychiatric Disabilities Addressing Violence, a coalition of psychiatric survivors, social workers and family members of people who have died from an interaction with police, has said it hopes to get standing at the inquest.
