Rail Garden vandalism disappointing to residents JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Vandals appear to be making the rounds at The Rail Garden, a unique community garden and park at 446 Woodfield Rd. On Aug. 13, Little India area residents Jason Gemmill and Jen Hendriks and their daughters Marlowe, 3, and Fenner, 7, were disheartened to find someone or a group of people ripped out several unripe items from the garden including a number of carrots, which were left in a black bucket nearby. “Somebody’s been pulling the food out and not eating it. We’re disappointed,” Gemmill said during a recent interview. “They pulled out a bunch of carrots from some plots and some kale and just left it there. On the bright side, the girls have formed a ‘Mystery
Club’ to find the culprits.” Hendriks posted their finding on social media. Another member of the garden saw the post and reported “carrots yanked and not taken and several unready garlic plants, a cuke and a squash marauded.” Plants ripped out The following day, the family went back to The Rail Garden to find someone had also ripped out several green tomatoes. Hendricks, who serves as a volunteer member of the organizing committee for The Rail Garden, said she understands a certain amount of thieving from the urban community garden will happen, but to just rip out plants and leave them strewn about makes no sense. “This was a little bit strange,” she said, adding it would be easier

to accept if the food removed was at least consumed. “I would have preferred to see the carrots half eaten and tossed on the ground.” Hendriks said in past years some of the community garden’s members have noticed some of their food removed and likely eaten, but never just blatantly discarded. Gemmill called the unneighbourly behaviour “disappointing” and said the individual or group of people who did this “don’t get what the garden means to people.” “There’s not much you can do about it. It’s unfortunate, but these things happen I suppose,” he said. At this time, police have not been notified of the incident, which Hendriks is calling “a random act of vandalism.” A few months ago, vandals also tagged the garden’s shed.

Alphabet on The Danforth inspired by local families: artist >>>from page 1 at 972 Danforth Ave. “I thought, ‘What could I do for this neighbourhood to bring culture?’” said Fraser, who lived for three-and-ahalf-years near Danforth and Greenwood avenues. In the early stages of his project, Fraser visited The Only Café on a number of occasions to sketch and get inspiration for his endeavour, which he views as both a gift to the neighbourhood as well as to The Only Café, a popular locale known for supporting independent artists. He said Alphabet on The Danforth is inspired by the many families he observed strolling along Danforth Avenue.
Initially, Fraser had hoped to obtain funding from local business improvement areas for his project but that didn’t happen so he decided to go ahead regardless. “I just love seeing smiling kids. My goal is to bring a little positivity to the strip and art is a healing thing,” Fraser said of what motivated him to do the project, which he completed this weekend. To help cover some of the cost of the Alphabet on The Danforth and others across the city, Fraser has set up a Go Fund Me crowdfunding campaign at http://www. gofundme.com/whatsvictorupto. He’s aiming to collect $15,000 in donations. A street artist for more
than 20 years, Fraser started out busking at the corners of Yonge and Dundas and Bloor and Yonge streets. Before long, his talent was recognized and he started getting hired for his artwork. Fraser has since been hired by a number of corporate clients and has been commissioned to do dozens of interesting sidewalk art projects around the world. He also regularly paints “guerilla” pieces throughout Toronto and has a general understanding with the City’s Public Works department that his pieces are intended for the beautification of the city. Entirely self-taught, Fraser usually starts off by outlining his semi-permanent pieces in
chalk then fills them in with either water-based paints and/or pastel chalk depending on the type of project he’s working on. One of Toronto’s longest standing and most prolific sidewalk artists, his pieces have appeared in Vancouver, Montreal, and New York City as well as in Germany, Belgium, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Fraser has also painted numerous pieces throughout Toronto, including a number of works on sidewalks outside Fire Hall 314, 312, and 311, EMS Station 40 and 52 Division. Recently, Fraser completed a large compass design at the corner of Danforth Avenue
and Main Street. The work features the words dignity, respect, love, hope and trust. Just last Friday, he painted a 45-foot-long piece featuring the phrase Art is the New Steel at the James Street North art crawl in Hamilton. This spring, Fraser also worked on a number of projects including a Zodiacinspired piece outside Trinity-St. Paul’s United Church at Bloor and Spadina streets as well as a 25-feet long Thunderbird piece outside Queen Street West’s Horseshoe Tavern in honour of First Nations Day.

The Ex: marking a special time of year for Toronto families
Write us
T
oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions that define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition tomorrow comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching. It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7. The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend. Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they want to see, and those are handed down our view traditions through the generations. You can pretty much bet that if your A Toronto parents made a point of going to The Ex on the air show weekend tradition because that’s what they wanted to see, you will now be taking returns your own kids, or maybe even grandkids, to also see the air show. Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions. Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest that takes place for the first time this summer. Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer. Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach, to name but a few. As always, if you’re looking for things to do in the city, visit us at insidetoronto.com/toronto-events

Thoughts about the coming federal election
T
he arrival of shorter days of the type we have not seen for far too long appears to have heralded a change of season. Still, the heat tells us that we’re in for several more weeks of summer, no matter what the calendar says. The days are hot, the air conditioners are blasting away, and lighter covers are definitely needed for nighttime sleeping. There are also some definite signs of the upcoming political changes taking place this coming fall. Along with the days becoming shorter, we are seeing politicians ramping up their various types of campaigning. While most people are still sweating it out in summer mode, there is definite grumpiness amongst politicians who have been frustrated with the polarized state of politics.
It will be interesting to see whether that feeling of discontent will translate into some sort of compromise or more radical talk. At this point, nobody wants to talk about elections as the economy is still too fragile to see a wishywashy government of any political stripe. power Likewise, it is apparent to me that the people of Ontario are not willing to have conservatives in power at the federal level of government and change is coming. The real issue — that everyone is watching — is seeing whether the global economic changes that are taking place will have repercussions in Canada. At this time the economic market is acting more like a pinball machine where the economy is bouncing off one crisis
joe cooper watchdog after another in an almost random manner. When stock market conditions change this quickly, all predictive financial indicators simply stop working. All we can do now is to wait and see where the market settles and if all goes well, the landing will be relatively soft. Unfortunately, economists are trying to decide which “R” word to use for the next fiscal quarter; recovery or recession. With that all said and done, by October we may be facing some very important questions regarding trends in employment, economic growth and property values for the next year. No matter the rhetoric that will be flung about by different political parties, the only real issue for most
people will be either keeping the job they have, or finding one. Let’s see how the province fairs as we pass through this unsettled time with nearly a decade of cut backs in government services behind us. More tax cuts may appeal to those ideologically inclined to see such policies as improvements. However, they have not translated into either jobs or prosperity for the majority of people in either Toronto or the province. Maybe it’s time to stop thinking in such simplistic terms which have obviously not worked and start considering a policy of properly investing in the economy. By investing I mean as a society as a whole and not just as individuals. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. 30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test
During this Limited-Time event, we are looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally disscree reet open-fit and IIC models shown here:
Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.
It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Local issues need to be focus of election
T
here’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial. At some point leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs. Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for the right time to say so. So really – for Toronto, there is no downside. Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story. Toronto has other needs that only the federal
david nickle the city government can properly meet. We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federallyfunded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improvement. These all should be, at some point, dealbreaking or –making policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister. As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Toronto-centric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds. If voters were taking simple enlightened selfinterest into account,
then the child benefit cheques that the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped should have had some impact on polling for them. It’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder of the city looking to turf the bum out. That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foul-mouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. Many elections ago, former Prime Minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues. Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems.

Station honours Macdonald The plaza outside Union Station has been officially renamed after Canada’s first prime minister. A t a c e re m o n y h e l d Tuesday, the newly renovated space was officially christened Sir John A. Macdonald Plaza and a plaque erected in honour of the man most credited with building the Canadian Pacific Railway. But the designation doesn’t come without some controversy given Macdonald’s role in instituting a “head tax” on Chinese migrants and his policies on First Nations people during his years as prime minister. The move represents a diminished plan to honour Macdonald after a city survey found the majority were opposed to naming the station after him. Pilot project begins wpre-boarding
Until the end of the year the TTC will test the effectiveness of pre-boarding announcements intended to assist visually impaired
between Strachan Avenue and Bathurst Street and will require a reduction of one lane in each direction. For a full list of projects visit www.toronto.ca/inview

When the bus approaches a stop, as the front doors open, an external speaker will broadcast what route it serves and where it’s headed. The TTC has until 2017 to comply with provincial regulations requiring preboarding announcements on all of its vehicles.

It is taking place Thursday, Oct. 1, at Hart House at the University of Toronto and will feature input from local and international transportation professionals and advocates for complete streets. News-Tips-Updates
“Your presentation sounds good. I’ll list right now” Look at more than one presentation and consider the advantages and disadvantages of each. Making an impulsive decision when caught up “in the moment” could be difficult to correct later. Since you normally contract to list your house with the agent for a specific period of time, you may find yourself unable to “switch” to another if you find yourself unhappy with the service you receive
Let me handle your stress of selling your house. I find that many clients struggle with where to start when it comes to preparing their home for sale. My property preparation service will make your house look beautiful.
Painting value can add 5% to 10% to the value of your house. Painting your house has one of the best returns you can possibly make. Take advantage of free painting!

OMG!!!! Teuta is beyond amazing!!!. Teuta’s negotiation skills in selling a home for her clients are formidable and her clients’ needs always come first. – no stone is left unturned on behalf of her clients. Her team did impeccable renovation, painting and Staging work for us and left the house positively immaculate and staged to perfection. We have never met an agent who works so hard for her clients. Choose Teuta to sell your house and you will be positively amazed with the results. - Neil Lacombe and Debbie Stadnyk
In a word: wow. We hired Teuta Guci for a few reasons: her tenacity; her attention to detail; her drive and work ethic; and, importantly, for her track record of selling homes well over asking. We were not disappointed — in fact, we were blown away by the end result. . There are a lot of excellent realtors in Toronto, but Teuta goes above and beyond, working harder than any agent I’ve dealt with to maximize the sale of your home. I would recommend her in a heartbeat to anyone considering selling their home. Thank you, Teuta, for everything! Jennifer Pot and Scott Fennell.
