The 12-day closure of the station started Monday of this week.

The TTC is using the time to complete its first extensive renovation of the station since its opening back in 1966.

During the closure, subway trains along the Bloor Danforth line will pass through the station, and the TTC is recommending those heading east take the 81 Thorncliffe bus south along Pape Avenue to Donlands Station. Westbound customers can walk to Chester Station or take the 72 Pape bus to Broadview Station.

The 25 Don Mills bus which normally runs between Fairview Mall and Pape Station will instead make stops at Donlands Station throughout the closure.

A temporary bus stop will be located just outside of the station on Pape Avenue.

A fitting tribute was paid to late NDP leader TorontoDanforth MP and former councillor Jack Layton with the renaming of Toronto’s ferry docks in his honour.

T h e f o r m e r To r o n t o Island Ferry Terminal officially became known as the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal today with a special celebration and statue unveiling to commemorate the event. The event also marked the twoyear anniversary of Layton’s death.

Layton’s life in public office began as a Toronto-Danforth councillor in 1982. He eventually moved to federal politics,

taking over as leader of the NDP in 2003 and leading the party to its best showing at the federal level, winning 103 seats in the 2011 election.

He died Aug. 22, 2011 at the age of 61 of cancer.

According to his son, current Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton, the renaming of the ferry docks in his father’s honour was fitting given his family’s ties to the island.

“Like a lot of folks in Toronto, we spent a lot of time going to the islands,” he said. “We would love to go out to Centre Island, go stay with friends or go to the beach.”

Layton noted Toronto Island served as the family’s

de facto cottage while he was growing up, though the location holds even greater significance than that.

Jack Layton and his widow, Trinity-Spadina MP Olivia Chow, were married there in 1988 and Mike Layton married his wife, Brett Tryon, on the island last summer, a year after Jack Layton’s death.

“It’s a lovely spot to go over and exchange vows,” Layton said.

The ferry docks will not honour Jack Layton in name only. A life-size statue of the late NDP leader sitting on the back seat of a tandem bike also adorns the site.

The sculpture, which was created by Toronto sculptor David Pellettier and subsi-

dized through funds raised by the Ontario Federation of Labour, is named “Jack’s got your back. Stronger Together: The Layton Memorial.”

Visitors to the ferry docks will be able to hop on the front seat of the tandem bike for photos.

During his time in office, Jack Layton was an ardent and vocal proponent of affordable housing, same-sex marriage and other forms of social justice.

Council passed the motion to rename the ferry docks in June with the blessing of Layton’s family.

Planning forums a great first step

he City of Toronto’s planning department ‘officially’ kicked off a series of public outreach meetings – 16 in total –Tuesday at Nathan Phillips Square.

These information sessions are an important way to keep Torontonians engaged with their city, their neighbourhoods, and most importantly the planning decisions city hall makes on their behalf.

Dubbed Planners in Public Spaces (PiPS), these meetings will have staff addressing the public on planning matters, giving residents an opportunity to speak with those who provide council with reports on developments across the city.

Toronto planner Giulio Cescato acknowledged the public only sees them when there is a big planning meeting or on controversial develour view opments or studies.

With that knowledge, the planning department opted to give Have your Torontonians the chance to speak say on local to planning staff about both genissues to do with city planning development eral and – in the areas where the meetings are taking place – ask specific questions regarding development in that community.

On so many levels, this initiative is extremely beneficial to everyone involved: city staff can hear directly from residents, without the stresses of an official development meeting where tempers can often run high, and residents can understand some of the specifics that go into planning a neighbourhood.

Every community, every street, every neighbourhood has its own issues and challenges – North York is not the Beach, Parkdale is not Scarborough, Etobicoke is not the centre of the city, East York is not Bloor West nor is it York.

Each neighbourhood has its own experiences, its own demands for development. These meetings give residents an understanding of how a development has come to be, and why it came to be.

This creates understanding well beyond the topic at hand.

Whether it’s budget debates, the potential closing of libraries and schools, or issues with a high-rise condo proposal meetings to learn more about any given subject is a true sign of a forward-thinking city.

Development issues are some of the least-discussed because development in any city is a good thing. No one wants to stop development, because it brings many economic and social benefits to a city.

So, we call on planning staff to continue these outreach initiatives and start planning many, many more.

Be wary of plans to ‘reform’ city council

W

e all like the idea of democracy and having our elected officials provide proper public representation in government.

Yet when it comes to actual practice that proves hard to deliver due to many human failings.

Some failings are due to apathy, such as poor voter turn out during elections.

Others are more nefarious due to the failings of human morality or the institutional means to catch such failings.

One failing that has bothered me the most has been the deliberate manipulation of the area which one votes in.

This is called gerrymandering, which is a term that originated in the United States.

Back in 1812, electoral districts of the state of Massachusetts were redrawn to benefit the Democrat-Republican Party.

As a result it was so

Gerrymander A newspaper of the day named the resulting electoral district a gerrymander to mock the situation.

The problem is that the practice did not end and became popular where ever it was permitted.

Those who were in power redrew the boundary lines so that as many voters of their party as possible were grouped into blocks.

It did not matter that the boundary lines headed off in ridiculous angles and covered impossible areas.

All that mattered was winning as many seats as possible to make a majority.

We have seen our own gerrymandering in Toronto

with municipal amalgamation being the prime example.

What was once “the city that worked” has become the city divided.

The problem is that this has been no accident, but was intended.

As long time readers of my column know I warned about the lesson of Indianapolis Indiana. That American city was forced to amalgamate in 1969 with it Republican suburbs simply to overwhelm the Democratic downtown.

It worked, but as a result the city has floundered in the same way that our own is now doing.

What is worse is that there are further divisions of electoral boundaries planned in the near future.

That and continued calls for the reduction of city council to 22 members and the creation of a strong mayor system.

These “reforms” will not benefit you; just a handful of politicians by making

their job easier.

Of course, you will be told that the changes will be for your benefit, as they always are.

Democracy is messy Democracy is messy, noisy, and frustrating, but it’s better than the alternatives.

Making it simpler does not mean lower taxes or more efficiency, but simply less work for a smaller number of politicians.

So be very careful when people start talking about a 22-member city council and other “reforms”.

Do you really want to have to live with a gerrymander rather than in a democracy?

History has shown far too often that gerrymanders do bite the hand that feeds them.

Stakes are high in Ward 3 meeting Many great places to hike in Toronto O

n Monday, Aug. 26, hopefully slightly more than a bare quorum of council will sit down to debate the question of what to do about Ward 3 Etobicoke Centre.

Although really, debate is the wrong word to describe what will be going on.

Whenever a council seat comes vacant mid-term, what the remaining council members are faced with is a game board.

If council is relatively stable in its support of its mayor, it’s a friendly game of canasta. When things aren’t so stable, it’s more high-stakes poker. Maybe Survivor. Occasionally, Russian roulette.

Ward 3 is a high-stakes game for everyone involved.

When Mayor Rob Ford lost Ward 3 Councillor Doug Holyday to the Progressive Conservatives at Queen’s Park, he lost more than a deputy mayor: he lost a reliable vote.

Ford is ostensibly pushing for a byelection because he believes democracy is the best way to run a city.

But the fact that he can barely garner 23 votes on most issues he cares about must surely have banished any thoughts of saving up to $225,000 and just appointing a caretaker councillor.

Friendly face Ford is really far more likely to find himself another friendly face by asking the residents of Ward 3 to elect one than he is convincing council to appoint one.

The small majority of council who routinely opposes Ford might prefer to appoint a councillor who’d be less hewn to the mayor’s hard right-wing

agenda, and indeed, that could be the game they play.

But just as Ford will have to deal with criticism that in supporting a byelection he’s squandering taxpayers’ money on a councillor who will maybe attend eight or nine council meetings before the general election, so will they have to contend with the accusation that by appointing they’re stealing a mandate from 52,000 electors who deserve a say in how their city’s governed.

Applying that yardstick to the question, the mayor is in the right on this one.

An appointment is essentially undemocratic.

It delivers a cut-rate councillor for eight or nine meetings who arrives already beholden to the councillors who supported him or her in the appointment process.

And that debt is considerable. The caretaker steps into a six-figure job that will either be abandoned

after eight months of lacklustre performance, or parlayed into a potentially long political career by supplying the advantage of incumbency in the next general municipal election.

Granted, one expects Mayor Ford will bring to bear his considerable knack for campaigning to help his favoured candidate win the byelection.

But that is fair play in any election. And if a moderate or left-leaning candidate wants to take a stab at the ward Holyday has represented for decades — well, the considerable knack for campaigning that forces on the left and centre can muster can enter the game too.

That’s fine. Because if we’re going to be playing this high-stakes game, we owe it to everyone — particularly the residents of Ward 3 — to play it fair.

To the editor: Re: ‘Take a hike,’ Special Feature, July 25.

There are many beautiful multi-use trails in the city and close by. The following are some my favourites: 1.) East Don Parklands Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue to Leslie and Steeles Avenue.

In late spring and summer, the trail is shaded (covered by trees) along a portion of Don River. In September, salmon were spotted swimming upstream. There are salmon counts around that time, too.

Starting at Leslie and Sheppard, one way, at normal speed, is about 55 minutes to 60 minutes, round trip is less than two hours. The only thing to watch out for is some cyclists race on the trail.

2 . ) E d w a rd s G a rd e n to Sunnybrook Park to Sunnybrook hospital to York University Glendon Campus back to Sunnybrook Park up

to Tom Thompson Trail and Edwards Garden.

This route takes about two and a half hours.

3) Etobicoke’s Humber River Trail.

This is gorgeous for a fall colour walk from Old Mill subway station to Steeles Avenue West. There are creeks/streams, small bridges and fall foliage along the trail.

It could be a five-hour walk.

4.) Mississauga’s Credit River Culham and Red Trails.

The route is along the Credit River and takes about two hours to complete. The trail is shaded with gravel surface.

5.) Seaton Hiking Trail in Pickering It is as good as, if not better than, the trails in the Rouge Park. To cover Sections 1 and 2 of the trail requires two and a half hours. In short, it is an excellent half-day hike.

City’s historic sites launch WTF? bus shelter campaign RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com City of Toronto Historic Sites is making use of a cheeky promotional campaign to get millennials / Generation Y interested in local history.

WTF? (What the Fact) is part social media engagement and part traditional advertising promotion aimed at growing a younger audience for the city’s museums.

“It’s a way to revitalize our whole brand and the museums, and make people know we may be about history, but we’re certainly not historic,” said Karen Black, manager of museum services for the city.

Un t i l t h e m i d d l e o f September, 100 TTC bus shelters across the city are displaying ads showing a single zoomed-in shot of an unknown artifact found in one of the 10 city museums, with the tagline, “WTF?” and the invitation to post guesses

on the object’s identity via social media.

Ilena AldiniMessina, program supervisor for museum services, said the eight objects chosen for the first WTF? campaign are relatively easy to identify, ranging from artworks to everyday items, most of which date back to the late 19th century.

“The point is to inspire people to want to find out what the images are by doing research or learning about them,” Aldini-Messina said.

The provocative name – a play on words of a widely used Internet acronym profanely denoting extreme confusion – was chosen knowing it might offend some, a necessary risk

to have the campaign stand out, Aldini-Messina said.

“It is cheeky and that’s why we think it will work. It’s different and it’s a new way to get audiences because they are the future of our city,” she said.

About 1,200 people have already shared the WTF? campaign or commented on it through Toronto’s Historic Sites facebook page and Twitter.

Correct guesses will win a pass for two to any city museum and the objects’ identities are scheduled for reveal at the end of the campaign, Tuesday, Sept. 10.

“We hope the campaign sparks discussion, because in our opinion any discussion is good when it gets people talking about history,” AldiniMessina said.

Now or never in fight to save local ash trees MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Property owners in Toronto have until the end of this month to protect whichever ash trees can still be saved, say people involved in fighting the emerald ash borer beetle.

A tiny invasive pest, the beetle was found near Hwy. 404 in North York in 2007.

It has exploded across Toronto, slowly killing every ash tree it finds – around 860,000 in the city’s yards, parks, streets and ravines.

The only proven defence is a pesticide called TreeAzin, but it must be injected between June 1 and Aug. 31, when the tree’s vascular tissues can use it to kill beetle larvae under their bark.

Toronto’s infestation, much of it still hidden in seemingly healthy trees, is so advanced next summer may be too late for most ash tree owners to try the pesticide.

“The time is running out,” Josef Ric, Toronto Urban Forestry’s acting supervisor of forest health care said in an interview.

At eye level, contractors staple small green aluminum plates on the injected trees, a sign of the city’s commitment to keep injecting them every two years until the pest is gone.

The city has removed and destroyed 4,000 dead ash trees this year on municipal land, and marked 4,700 more with dots of bright orange paint, to show trees that are dying and doomed.

It has also planted 15,000 replacement trees in a variety of species, said Ric, adding next summer good candidates for TreeAzin may still be found, but predicted there will be far fewer. “What we’ve done so far (in selecting for injections) is almost final.”

decline. Businesses or homeowners with ash trees on their land are on their own as they weigh the considerable cost of injections with the cost of removing their trees.

The Canadian Forest Service and other agencies are testing natural predators for the beetle, parasitic wasps, but it’s thought it will take 10 years for the ash borer population to crash along with its food supply.

Michelle Bourdeau, program manager for LEAF - Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests - said TreeAzin, provided a tree’s infestation is not visible already, is worth a shot.

“It’s likely cheaper to treat if you’ve got a large tree,” than pay to remove it, she said.

“It’s an irreplaceable thing.”

TreeAzin applicators must be licensed, and property owners should get more than one quote, said Bourdeau, adding a few interested people on a street should ask for a group discount.

The non-profit group, advises people to plant trees as a response to the continuing losses to Toronto’s tree canopy, even if they had no ash trees on their land.

On the heels of a number of setbacks this season, the under-15 rep girls East York Blue Devils took in the experience of a lifetime recently after winning a contest to meet Toronto FC, initiated

by Koch.

“I’m soccer parent number one right now,” joked the TFC season ticket holder.

Welcome event The up-close and personal meet and greet, which included a mini-clinic, drills, a one-on-one ‘chalk talk’ with Toronto FC players Danny Koevermans, and an autograph session with Mark Bloom and Michael Thomas, was a welcome event after a season filled with injury.

entered the squad in mid-July into a draw to meet the Major League Soccer pro team.

“They asked ‘In 250 words tell us why your team should be coached by Toronto FC”,’

she said of the online promotion.

Koch and the East York Soccer League team, which climbed the ranks over the years from house league to all-star and finally this season to rep with the Central Girls Soccer League, hastily put together a video presentation about their popular head coach, Tom Lazarou.

The girls decided to use the letters of Lazarou’s name “and provided a descriptor for each letter” to define their coach and what he means to the team, Koch said.

A few days later the Blue Devils received a call from contest organizers.

“They asked if we could find a field by July 23rd,” which was a difficult task, she said, but the team finally found space at Greenwood Park.

“The whole (Blue Devils) team was there. We played a scrimmage game and each girl won a prize pack and two tickets each for the Aug.

10 match against Seattle Sounders.”

Little did the Blue Devils know the TFC experience was not over just yet.

The team received an email stating: “You thought it was all over, but your VIP experience is about to begin,” said Koch.

TFC practice The local team was invited to the Rogers VIP room where they listened to an inspirational speech from Danny Koevermans. The girls then had the opportunity to watch TFC practice, followed by a photo session.

“I think the contest was a great opportunity for the girls and a bit of a pick-me-up after the season we’ve had.

There’s been a lot of injuries.” Koch also took something away from the experience.

“I support two soccer teams in Toronto, the East York Blue Devils and Toronto

FC. This event was the perfect opportunity to marry my two soccer loves,” she said.

“I took great pleasure in submitting our entry... It was encouraging to see how the girls pulled together and crafted the winning words (for the contest).”

Kirk Dunn, a manager with the team for five years, said it was a huge lift for the girls who were “thrilled about the opportunity to support their coach for all the hard work he’s put in to the team.”

“He has a great understanding of the game and he inspires these girls to take it to the next level.”

Dunn’s daughter, Findley Dunn, a goal keeper with the Blue Devils, enjoyed the one on one interaction with the players.

“I think we kind of imagined ourselves playing at that level, it was really cool.”

Athletes ‘relay’ good news from Moscow

A couple of east end speedsters helped put Canada back on the map at the world track and field championships which wrapped up in Moscow this week.

Aaron Brown – who grew up in the area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street, attending Bowmore public school – helped Canada to a bronze medal in the 4x100 metre relay event.

And Crystal Emmanuel – who has lived in East York for more than half a decade, graduating from East York Alternative School – helped the Canadian women to a sixth place finish in the same event.

It marked the first championship final event for the Canadian women since 1999 and in the semifinal race they broke a Canadian record that had held since 1976.

“The best is yet to come,” promised Emmanuel, 21, on the Athletics Canada website.

“We were all jumping around and hugging. It was a great moment. Exact opposite of last year. It felt right to be on the podium, we deserved to be there last year and we deserve to be there this year.

“The guys last year put us back on the map, we wanted to build off that momentum and go even faster this year.

Over the moon right now.”

Brown had a couple of Toronto high school grads on the relay team including Justyn Warner, 26, who grew up in Scarborough and attended Birchmount Park Collegiate and Gavin Smellie, 27, who grew up in Etobicoke and graduated North York’s Dante Alighieri Academy. They were joined by Mississauga native and York University alumni Dontae Richards-Kwok, 24.

Two suspects sought after cab driver robbed A cabbie suffered minor injuries during a weekend robbery in East York.

Police said the 67-yearold taxi driver picked up a fare on Haldon Avenue near Cosburn and Woodbine avenues around 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 18.

As the cabbie was about to make a U-turn, a masked male brandishing a knife opened the driver’s door and demanded cash.

The suspect threatened to kill the cabbie and struck him in the back of the head.

The taxi driver handed over money, and both male suspects fled north toward Taylor Creek Park.

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene.

One suspect is black, 5’11” to 6’ tall with short black hair and a thin build. The other is white, 26 to 28 years old, 5’1” to 5’2” with a thin build.

robbed near Danforth/Logan wTeens Police are looking for four men after two 16-yearold boys were robbed in the Danforth and Logan avenues area early Saturday.

Police said the suspects swarmed the victims and demanded cash at about 2 a.m.

When the victims refused, one suspect made a second demand for cash while one of his accomplices punched one victim in the head, knocking him to the ground.

The suspects made off with a cellphone, ID and cash. They fled west on Hogarth Avenue.

One victim went to hospital with minor injuries.

The closure will not affect the timeline for completion

of an additional station exit near Lipton Avenue which the TTC says will be done in December.

The shutdown was originally planned for June following an online poll showing the majority of respondents supported an extended closure.

But the plan was pushed back due to a province-wide job action by a Brick and

Allied Craft Union which was contracted by the TTC to take part in the renovations.

The modernization work on Pape also includes better lighting, the installation of public art and replacement of station finishes.
