Residents invited to help celebrate Riverdale’s heritage An afternoon celebrating the heritage of Riverdale is set for this Saturday. Hosted by Heritage Toronto and the Riverdale Historical Society

(RHS), the day will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the free “Riverdale and the Railway” walking tour. Hosted by Gerald Whyte of the Riverdale Historical Society, the

tour will explore the advent of the railway in the city’s east end starting with the opening of the Grand Truck Railway’s Queen East Station in 1896.

A long-standing child/parent dropin centre housed in the former Riverdale United Church at Gerrard and Leslie streets is facing an uncertain future and has reached out to the community for help. The Parent Resources Drop-In Centre, which has served east-end residents since 1977 and has called the basement of the former church home since 1996, could be left homeless by the end of the year. Just over two years ago, the United Church of Canada made the decision to close the church after years of declining attendance and rising costs to maintain the circa-1912 property. “The congregation held on until about 2008 or 2009, but it just wasn’t sustainable for the United Church to have a church in the community,” explained Jim McKibbin, a mission developer with the Toronto Southeast Presbytery of the United Church of Canada. “We’ve had similar experiences in the Beach and across Canada. We’re a victim of changing times.” McKibbin, who has been involved in considering the future of the church for the past year or so, said Riverdale United’s remaining congregation members had “high regard” for their two long-term tenants (The Parent Resources Drop-In Centre and the Chinese Evangelic Church) and wanted to ensure both groups had enough time to come up with alternate plans in the event the decision was made to sell the >>>SALE, page 14

East Yorker heading to Paralympic Games DANIELLE MILLEY dmilley@insidetoronto.com Victoria Nolan started rowing to be a role model for her children. She never thought the sport would allow her children to watch her take on the world. Nolan, an East York resident, is heading to London, England, for her second Paralympic Games on the mixed four crew (the boat includes two men, two women and a coxswain). “I got into the sport of rowing to be a strong role model for my children, I never expected it to take me to the world stage. Now they are old enough to understand what I’m doing and it will be the first time they will see me compete internationally,” she said. “I am thrilled that they will have this memory of their mom and the message that you can achieve anything if you are determined.” Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease, at 18, Nolan began rowing about seven years ago to combat the depression

she experienced due to her increasing blindness (she has about three per cent vision). When rowing was introduced into the Paralympics in 2008, she was encouraged to compete. Though this is her second Paralympic Games, it’s the first time her son Tarabh, 9, and daughter Ceili,

7, will be there to cheer her on. Her husband Eamonn, her parents and her sister will also be in London. As a special education teacher, she’s also sure to have a large contingent of fans cheering her on from Canada. At the Beijing Games, Canada’s mixed four boat placed sixth, which Nolan said was “a big disappointment. “So the last four years have been about coming back and getting on the podium. I’ve had the Paralympic experience, now it’s all about the competition. Ultimately, I just want to make sure I perform my personal best and then I will be satisfied whatever the result,” she said. The crew going to these games has three returning members including Nolan; there is a new stroke, a new coxswain and Nolan moves to the bow seat from stroke. After a gold at the 2010 world championships, Nolan said there was pressure going into the 2011 event, but after a second-place finish there, the team is feeling less pressure going the Games. as the Paralympics, there is always an element of surprise. “There are a lot of unknowns. You never know what to expect and how much countries have improved, so we are looking forward to the heat to figure out where we stand,” she said in an email from Europe last week, where the team was doing some final training in advance of heading to London. “Excitement is building, but at the same time we have a lot of work to do between now and then so I’m staying focussed on each workout and making sure I am continuing to improve – every stroke counts,” she said. The team have been doing intense physical training; they typically train three times a day for a total of five hours, six times a week. They spend time on the water, as well as work on core strengthening, weightlifting and cross training on a stationary bike. Games. They visited the rowing site, Eton Dorney, in June to get a better sense of the area and they spoke with some of the Olympic rowers to find out their experience. A surge of interest in tickets for the Paralympic Games, which start Aug. 29, have put it on course to be the first in its 52-year history to sell out. Nolan is excited to hear awareness and interest in Paralympic sport is growing. “It is unfortunate that we don’t have as much TV coverage for the Paralympics as we do for the Olympics, the athletes train just as hard, if not more and have overcome other challenges before even getting to their sport. You can’t help but be inspired watching Paralympic sport,” she said. “Hopefully, Paralympic sport will not only gain more respect, but will also gain more athletes. I would love to see the size of the Canadian Paralympic team grow, especially the adaptive rowing program.” The rowers take to the water Aug. 31 for the first day of competition. *Metro *Michael’s of Canada *No Frills *Pharma Plus *Price Chopper *Salvation Army *Sears *Shoe Company *Shopper’s Drug Mart

Start your own CNE traditions T

he Canadian National Exhibition has been one of Toronto’s great summer traditions since 1879. Whether you are a newcomer to this city or a bornand-bred Torontonian, the Ex is one of those experiences that make living here special. Many residents hold memories of visits to the fair with family and friends as a key part of their summer. Perhaps they remember going on their first roller coaster, maybe it was the old wooden Flyer, seeing a big-name band play at The Grandstand, or eating a special food that only seemed to be available at the Ex. our view For those spending their first summer in Toronto, it’s a chance Celebrate end to create family memories and of summer traditions of their own. The CNE, which opened with a trip last Friday and continues until to the fair Labour Day, also marks the official countdown to the start of the new school year for youngsters across the city. It’s a bittersweet time as summer marches to its end, and that’s why the 18 days of the Ex mean so much to those who attend. Along with going to the Ex as a visitor, the fair is also a huge employer for local youngsters. The economic impact of the CNE to Toronto, though, goes beyond youth employment. According to the CNE, it had 1.31 million visitors last year, with many of them coming from out of town, spending their tourists dollars not only at the Ex but also other sites across the city. Along with economic benefits, the Ex is also a place for many young people to highlight skills ranging from dancing to accordion playing to baseball. And speaking of baseball, the Ex is home to one of the province’s most prestigious peewee tournaments. The 56th annual Lions-CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament is now underway at the ballpark located near the Dufferin Gate. Local teams competing in this year’s tournament are from East York, Scarborough, North York, North Toronto, Etobicoke, and a squad from the Toronto Playgrounds league. Other teams participating come mostly from the Greater Toronto Area, with squads this year also travelling in from Stratford and Niagara Falls. The champs of the first tournament back in 1956 were from the East Riverdale playground league, but it’s been 10 years since a Toronto-based team, the Agincourt A’s of Scarborough in 2002, took a title. The tourney continues until championship night on Aug. 30. For more on the tourney and the Ex, visit www. theex.com Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: Re: ‘Easy steps for better waste diversion,’ Editorial, Aug. 16. While I agree with the gist of the editorial that we must each do our part to sort our trash properly, I believe we need to take a step back further to the origin of our recyclables. While it may not be an issue for the City of Toronto on its own, all municipalities would benefit from requiring the manufacturers of goods to ensure their products and packaging is recyclable. I am prepared to do my part in sorting, but I would hope it would be easier knowing all packaging and products were eventually recyclable. This would ensure the 100 per cent compliance you call for in your editorial. Marc Charbonneau

Remembering why an East York park is named ‘Dieppe’

I

t was 70 years ago this week that an attacking force of around 5,000 Canadian soldiers landed on the beaches surrounding the German-occupied French port town of Dieppe. It was a disaster for the Allied forces as no major objectives were accomplished and those involved were decimated in a brutal counter attack. Yet despite the failure, a park was named “Dieppe” in 1943 by the Township of East York as an act of remembrance for the men who had fought despite the tactical miscalculation it represented. On Aug. 19, 1942 more than 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were involved in an Allied attack on the small Germanoccupied port in Northern France. On that day, 3,623 of the 6,086 men who were actually able to make it to shores of France were killed, wounded or captured.

watchdog

Joe Cooper

More of a practice raid than an invasion, and more the product of in-fighting between generals in disagreement about tactics, the entire exercise took place without approval of the combined chiefs of staff. Called Operation Jubilee, the Second Canadian Infantry Division under Major General J. H. Roberts was the major force that attacked the port towns of Dieppe, Puys and Pourville. In great part due to the poor preparation that had gone into planning, the raid ran into problems from the moment the troops left the docks in England and quickly escalated into a disaster upon reaching the

destination. Of the 1,027 men killed that day, 907 were Canadians, who represented 4,963 troops out of the 6,090 sent. Only 2,210 Canadians returned to England that day, with those who remained behind either captured or killed by the Germans. Those Canadians who were captured suffered more so than many other prisoners of war; on personal orders from Hitler they were all placed in shackles and publicly humiliated. While some have stated the raid helped the Allies prepare for future invasions, it has always been clear its purpose was more about military politics than learning military strategy. This begs the question of why, at the height of war, was an East York park named after an obscure French port-town where such a humiliating military defeat took place.

Within the answer to that question lays an important insight into Canada, its character and the role that remembrance takes within our society. While Canadians have fought in many wars, we are not a militaristic country and until recently we did not encourage a warrior culture as other societies do. By naming a park Dieppe, each member of the Canadian Armed Forces involved in that fateful raid, no matter what its strategic military outcome, are now members of our community. It is indeed a sad thing that there are still people in our community who drive by the Dieppe sign every day without understanding its history and meaning. Lest we forget. n Joe Cooper is a longtime East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at eym@insidetoronto.com

Riders need say on TTC board

T

here’s been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing on the transit file this past year. But as the dust settles on the subway-versus-lightrail battle for the future of transit – the hiring and firing of chief general managers – the prospect of new taxes to pay for new subways, our attention slipped away from a more quotidian matter: the question of governance. It came up earlier this year as Toronto City Council voted to keep Karen Stintz as chair of the TTC and replace a commission of Mayor Rob Ford loyalists with members from council’s centre and left wings. That shift – a response to the mayor’s role in the firing of transit boss Gary Webster – was half the plan. The other half was the introduction of an old idea: citizen members, appointed by council, would sit on the TTC along with elected officials. This was something Ford wanted to do holus-bolus,

management, have experience working for large boards and large companies and will have strong management skills, honed in the public, private or non-profit sectors. If the commission has four of these sorts on board, the politicians will find themselves outclassed in terms of organizational management. They also may find themselves further isolated from the people who matter most in the transit equation: namely, the riders who are navigating an increasingly crowded, expensive and frankly spotty service as they make their way about the city. For the past year and a half, those riders could be excused for feeling a little like pawns in a highlevel political chess game between council and the mayor. One or two citizen appointees on the board who speak for transit riders are much needed. n David Nickle is The Mirror’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. but council went a more moderate route, agreeing to create an 11-member commission with four citizen appointees and seven councillors. In September, Toronto’s Civic Appointment Committee will be making recommendations about who those four citizens should be. Toronto city manager Joe Pennachetti has hired NAFOR Executive Recruiting to pre-select candidates, and the committee will be looking at their report in September. Hard to say who will be on that list, but in a letter NAFOR has given a sense of the size of the pool – 485 applied – and the criteria they’re using. The most qualified candidates meet some high requirements: they will understand large project

Mukherjee named chair of Canadian association Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Mukherjee will have some added responsibilities over the next year, after he was tagged earlier this week to chair the Canadian Association of Police Boards for the 20122013 term. Mukherjee has been a citizen appointee and chair of the Toronto Police Services

Board since 2005, succeeding city councillor Pam McConnell. He has held the job under two mayors — David Miller and Rob Ford. Mukherjee was elected chair at the association’s 23rd annual conference in Victoria, B.C. on Monday. The Canadian Association of Police Boards

is comprised of 75 municipal police services boards across the country.

■ Public input sought

Toronto police are looking for feedback from the public. An online poll on the police website seeks information on various policing issues across

the city. Questions will be posted and the results published at the end of the survey period on Sept. 3. The new poll began earlier this month and asks residents their opinion on crime trends in their neighbourhoods and in Toronto in general. Access the poll by visiting online at www.torontopolice.on.ca/surveys and clicking on the Have Your Say link.

Sale of Riverdale United means centre must move >>>from page 1 property. He also said church members felt it was important all avenues be explored for the property before selling it off to the highest-bidding developer. “Once a church is disbanded, we usually immediately put the building up for sale, but the congregation requested we consider those longterm relationships so we decided to wait two years to examine the options then make a decision. We’re a compassionate organization,” said McKibbin, adding in the last two years the United Church has also commissioned a study to better determine the community’s needs

FUTURE SHOP CORRECTION NOTICE NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE FUTURE SHOP AUGUST 17 CORPORATE FLYER On page 22 of the August 17 flyer, the Samsung 32" EH4003 Series LED TV (UN32EH4003FXZC) (WebID: 10211452) was advertised with an incorrect specification. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

‘We really hope to stay in the same building or secure a similar space in the community.’ – Rosemary Montinat and demographics. They’ve also met with local politicians and representatives for east-end social service agencies to talk about the options for the site. In the end, McKibbin said the United Church of Canada found there just wasn’t a strong enough United Church presence in the community to maintain the property in its roster. Further, monies collected from the two tenants only covered the building’s day-to-day expenses, not

major capital repairs. Ultimately, the best option was to move forward with the sale, McKibbin said. “The church wants to do the right thing, but we can’t be in the landlord business,” he said. The two-year deadline came up this summer but after further consideration, the United Church of Canada decided to invite local groups and organizations to express interest in purchasing the property. The deadline to do so is Oct. 31. If a local organization doesn’t commit by then, the United Church will place it on the open market. The Parent Resources Drop-In Centre, which sees an estimated 80 people come through its doors each day, has organized a town hall on the topic Thursday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the former Riverdale United Church, 1117 Gerrard St. E. The purpose of the meeting is to

strategize and seek out the interest of potential partners to utilize the building while keeping the Parent Resources Drop-In Centre, which provides free programming for children up to age 12 as well as activities and workshops for local caregivers, many of whom are new Canadians with low or moderate incomes, have special needs children or are running single parent households. “(Having to move) could put this centre in jeopardy because we don’t have anywhere to go in the community,” said Rosemary Montinat, the centre’s executive director. “We really hope to stay in the same building or secure a similar space in the community.” She said it would be a challenge to find a location in the area that is both affordable (the centre is funded by the city’s Children’s Services with additional fundraising) and the same

size (roughly 3,500 square feet). Sunder Palani moved to the Greenwood-Gerrard area in November and drops by the nonprofit, non-denominational centre almost daily with his two-and-a-half year-old son, Jayshan. The soon-to-be dad of two said he finds the programs and camaraderie there invaluable. “Within a month I could see my son’s social skills and his communication skills improve. The activities are really well-organized and there are really nice people running this place,” said Palani, who back in April was invited to join the drop-in centre’s board of directors. “Without this place, there would be no other place for my son to go in the area to mingle with other kids.” Anyone with questions can call Montinat at 416-877-6059 or 416406-6457.

Riverdale walk participants to visit heritage plaques >>>from page 1 streetscape of the first phase of the Riverdale Heritage Conservation District. Those interested in participating should meet at Bruce Mackey

Park, near Queen Street East and Degrassi Street. A plaque presentation will follow at 2:30 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 135 First Ave., just west of Logan Avenue.

All are welcome to attend. The plaques, a project completed in partnership with the RHS and the support of Councillor Paula Fletcher and the City of Toronto, recognize the roles of the Riverdale

Heritage Conservation District and the Riverdale Railway Station in the preservation and expansion of the community. Visit www.heritagetoronto.org/ find-out-more/event
