In honour of the 10th anniversary of Yoga in the Park, organizer Trixie Montanile is hosting a fundraiser for Nepal Sunday. The event, which will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at Riverdale Park East, near Gerrard Street East and Broadview Avenue, will feature recording artist David Hickey along with international yoga teacher Rachel Fallon, who will be leading a yin yang mandala flow yoga class. Jessica Kim from Shelter Box Canada, the event’s benefactor, will serve as the event’s guest

Groundbreaking Chest Centre opens in East York Premier Kathleen Wynne celebrates opening with funding announcement at Toronto East General TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com A groundbreaking centre at Toronto East General Hospital was officially opened with the help of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and others Wednesday, Aug. 19. The opening of the hospital’s Chest Centre was celebrated with a funding announcement by the premier, who toured parts of the clinic, speaking with staff and a patient, along with BeachesEast York MPP Arthur Potts. Following the tour, Wynne, MPP for Don Valley West, announced a $125-million investment to help hospitals throughout Ontario fund repairs and upgrades during the next year. The money will help upkeep critical infrastructure including roofs, windows, heating systems, fire alarms, back-up generators and more,

explained Wynne. “Things that we don’t always cut ribbons on, but if they are not in working order, if they are not renewed, then the system doesn’t work,” she said. “We’re extending the useful life of facilities across our province.” A total of 128 hospitals will benefit from the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund investment, with approximately $1.7 million going to TEGH. “We look forward to renewing our physical infrastructure to a large degree,” said Sarah Downey, TEGH president and CEO, adding it’s thanks to grants like this the hospital can afford to fund innovative projects like the Chest Centre. The centre, which started treating patients in May, is a first for Toronto, and just the second of its kind in Ontario.

The $7-million facility, funded partly through donations, combines a host of different medical services in one place, allowing residents to receive complete care close to home. “We have created a centre of excellence at East General,” said Downey. “(It) brings together, under one roof, incredible expertise in respirology, thoracic surgery, and the other specialties required to diagnose, treat and manage the many illnesses of the chest and lungs.” The one-stop-shop improves quality of care for patients, allowing them to get better, quicker and more effective treatment, said Dr. Ian Fraser, chief of staff at TEGH. Its creation was inspired by a need in the community, he added. “We have a disproportionately high number of patients with lung disease in this area,” bonus cash

he said. “And in addition, we have wonderful knowledge and expertise, so it was just a natural thing toward meeting the needs.” Along with the 500,000 people TEGH serves locally, the centre is also helping patients from outside Toronto, both physically and remotely. Through telehealth services, its doctors offer

assistance province-wide. The collaborative care offered by the clinic grew out of TEGH’s Time to Treat program, said Fraser. The program, which was awarded nationally, first offered patients a collective approach to lung cancer treatment that sped up wait times and improved outcomes for people with cur-

able cancers. In addition to providing medical and surgical care, the centre offers educational programs to help people manage their conditions. A navigator guides patients through treatment, right from diagnosis, making medical journeys more manageable and comfortable for patients. The hospital’s existing thoracic surgery and respirology departments were combined in the facility. While improving quality and continuity of care, the centre’s emphasis on efficiency also cuts costs by helping patients avoid hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Thousands of people have already received care at the clinic, which operates 24/7, with sleep disorder studies happening overnight. The sleep lab is already running at capacity, with the next available appointments in 2016.

The case never closes on children who go missing

Write us

T

hirty years ago this summer, Toronto lost its innocence when an eight-year-old girl named Nicole was abducted from her Etobicoke apartment building. Children didn’t walk to school alone anymore. Parents looked to strangers with suspicion and filled their kids’ heads with dire consequences if they dared roam carefree. The first Nicole’s Run took place last week to mark the anniversary of Nicole Morin’s long-unsolved missing child case. Though a tragic story itself, the event focused on the positive, offering an opportunity to fundraise for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) and a chance to keep Nicole’s case – and those of other missing children – top of mind in the hopes of generating new leads. 30 years, police insist hope our view stillAfter exists for answers. Shaun Narine, superintendent of Toronto Be proactive Police 22 Division, told Metroland Toronto: “As with any missin protecting Media ing child, you never stop looking.” The case remains open and your child police have been working nonstop since, trying to find some evidence that would help them solve the mystery. Tips are always welcome, no matter how seemingly insignificant or – perhaps by now, after all these years – fuzzy on detail they may be. Nicole’s Run also serves as a reminder that children shouldn’t be afraid, but instead should be taught to be vigilant about their own safety. Society is a much different place, it’s true, but as long as children and parents are educated, innocence need not be sacrificed. CCCP’s website www.missingkids.ca offers tips on child safety and points out that the traditional advice “don’t talk to strangers” is outdated and ineffective in reducing a child’s risk of abduction and victimization. It’s only in the rarest cases that children are abducted by strangers, and more often, child abductions are committed by people who are known to the child. Visit the site to learn more, including how to protect your child against offenders lurking on the internet. Teaching your children these safety tips in a fun way can make the difference between a child who fears the world, and one who stands confidently before it. Practice “what-if” scenarios and get your child’s friends involved. In honour of Nicole, her family and those families that continue to grieve the loss of their missing children, be proactive in protecting yours.

Make the most of fall by planning now As one of my friends said to me recently, even though we are now revelling in the last warm days of August, there is the smell of “returning to school” in the air. I think anyone who has been part of the rhythms of the seasons in Southern Ontario has certainly experienced that melancholy end-of-summer feeling, particularly now when the days are getting noticeably shorter. There are other signs that help to kick in that end of summer feeling, such as when you go into a store and see hockey equipment and ice skates replacing beach and camping equipment. If that does not tell you that fall is just around the corner, then the arrival of the Canadian National Exhibition certainly confirms it. While I will certainly be making the most of these final warm days, it is still a

joe cooper watchdog good time to start thinking about how to make the most of fall time. A good starting point is to check the pages of the East York Mirror for announcements about fall programs and events. The East York farmers’ market will be continuing at the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave., each Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct. 30. One of the things I like about our farmers’ market is that as the seasons change, so does the produce and goods, with the fall time featuring a splendid harvest of fruits and vegetables. There are also new fall programs offered Sept. 18 to 20 at the Evergreen Brickworks, 550 Bayview Ave., that cover a range of topics and special exhibits

about the buildings, the ecology of the area, and Toronto food and wine. The activities that are available are of interest to individuals of all ages and families, and can be checked out online at www. evergreen.ca lend a hand There are also opportunities for volunteers in East York, not only with the groups listed, but certainly with other organizations as well. East York Meals on Wheels needs people with to deliver meals and also assist in other activities; you can contact them at 416-424-3322. Likewise, East York learning experience is asking people who can donate two hours a week helping someone with reading, writing or basic math during the day or evening to call them at 416425-2666.

Don’t forget that fall registration for programs offered by City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation programs in East York begins Sept. 16. There are a wide range of programs offered at the Stan Wadlow Clubhouse, 373 Cedarvale Ave., that focus on older adults during the day and after school programs; call 416396-2842 for details. The East York Community Centre at 1081-1⁄2 Pape Ave. has excellent fitness and swimming lessons for all ages from preschoolers to older adults. Call 416-396-2880 to learn more. This list only touches on the variety of activities that are taking place in our community. So plan now and make the most of the fall season. Reflections on Billy Bishop Airport After having flown Porter Airlines for the first time this past weekend, there’s no doubt in my mind: Robert Deluce’s little airline flying out of the Billy Bishop Airport would benefit from a jet-sized runway. My trip to Boston and back ran late on both ends: going out, because the little turboprop Dash 8 I was to leave on was laid up with mechanical problems at another airport, and Porter couldn’t wrangle another aircraft in time. And then I bumped again – voluntarily, having missed my connection – because the plane needed to shed some passengers for the wet runway. Weather made for another delay on the way back. Big strong jets in Porter’s fleet would be a benefit, at least a benefit to travellers like me, trying desperately to keep their blood pressure in check as they miss connections and arrive home past bedtime. The question of what benefits – or more to the point impacts – jet aircraft will have on the city and its waterfront remain open.

david nickle the city In 2014, Toronto council decided to keep those questions open, resisting pressure from Porter and PortsToronto (the new name for the Toronto Port Authority) to give a preliminary OK to start work on extending runways and removing the ban on jet aircraft. Council sent the supplicants back to the drawing board before continuing the conversation. The conversation will be coming up again this year and next, and is getting ready to start, as a pair of reports from Waterfront Toronto and PortsToronto offer a checklist of measures to apply to public consultation, public health and the environmental assessment of the jet option. It is quite a list that points to the flaws in the fast-and-loose process so far. It will be interesting to see what council makes of the plan when it comes forward this year, more than likely

without the guidance of our mayor, who has a conflict of interest on the matter owing to his son’s employment at the airport. That will leave a similarly constituted council enjoying a similar level of autonomy to their predecessors in 2014, when former mayor Rob Ford was effectively out of the debate for different reasons. Assuming the proponents of the expansion take the time to get their ducks in a row, things could very easily tilt the other way. But late on Sunday night, riding the brand-new people mover back from the island through that just-opened pedestrian tunnel, I couldn’t help but think that another solution to the Porter dilemma is much simpler, at least on a personal level: next time I fly to Boston, take a TTC bus to Pearson. There are plenty of jets to choose from there.

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Lions CNE baseball tourney moves to new home DAVID GROSSMAN plv@insidetoronto.com Success is a good thing. That may be true in most cases, but it’s not for one of Canada’s longest running amateur baseball tournaments. At 59 years old, the Lions CNE Peewee Baseball tournament not only is experiencing growing pains and some concern for its future, but also the classic event was given the boot from its traditional home of some six decades. The 32-team single elimination tournament, drawing 12 and 13-year-old players from across Ontario, is no longer at its nostalgic ballpark site near the entrance of the Dufferin Gates of the Canadian National Exhibition. Gone is the park, too. When politicians and bureaucrats chose to house the new $30 million practice stadium for the Toronto Raptors next to the ballpark, that meant the familiar grassy

site for competitive and recreational games was targeted to become a concrete parking lot. And so, the annual Lions CNE event got the heave-ho. Slam-dunked right out of the CNE. For the first time, games are now at Coronation Park, which is on the south side of Lake Shore Boulevard, closer to Bathurst Street. It’s also the same spot once considered to be a relocation possibility for the CNE midway. CNE passes “It’s unfortunate that we’re no longer at the CNE,” said Marv Pearl, who has been ballpark co-ordinator since 1985. “The teams still get (CNE) passes, but the crowds will likely just be families of players and people tell me it’s not the same. I really hope this event makes it to a 60th anniversary.” Moving the tournament, which is budgeted by the CNE, will likely cost more as electrical power at the Coronation

Park site was insufficient. A generator had to be rented and other issues added to the list, but Pearl complimented Toronto Parks and Forestry staff for their superb work. Pearl said notable hockey legends Wayne Gretzky and Ken Dryden once played in the prestigious baseball tourney, believed to be the

longest running attraction on the grounds of the CNE. That is, until this year. Cincinnati Reds slugger Joey Votto also played when the event was behind the former Arts and Crafts Building, as did Josh Naylor, the Miami Marlins first round draft pick this year. When the event started

in 1956, East Riverdale won it and future distance runner Bruce Kidd, now in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, was on that squad. The tourney was also predominantly for Toronto teams when it started, but the championship has gone to teams from Toronto specifically only 15 times. ‘Baseball was big’ Scarborough Village, Don Mills and North York were among the championship local teams with Agincourt A’s being the last Toronto club to claim the title – and that was back in 2002. “Baseball was big back then, and while the Toronto Blue Jays have brought lots of attention to the game, we’re not getting as many top teams

as in past and the numbers of players have dropped significantly,” said Pearl, who confirmed there is no entry fee and all players get an award. Participating this year from Toronto are the Etobicoke Rangers, North York Blues, Scarborough Stingers, East York Bulldogs, Royal York Cardinals and Leaside. The nine-day single elimination tournament started last weekend with the eventual finalists, playing for championship bragging rights on Sept. 3, needing to put together a string of five straight wins. Markham Mariners and the Newmarket Hawks, both having previously qualified for the national championship also taking place this week in Quebec, can still return to win the Lions CNE event having been seeded high and getting an automatic berth to second round games. • Visit us at www.east yorkmirror.com for tourney updates.

A major milestone was celebrated when it was announced this week the TTC has passed 30 billion transit trips. Long-time rider Grant Scott was chosen as the stand-in customer for the trip that was likely to have been made earlier in the month, according to the TTC. For the honour, Scott received a free monthly Metropass subscription for one year. Despite near-annual raises to fares, the TTC has seen steady increases in ridership for 11 straight years and will likely set another record for total trips taken in 2015. The 30-billion figure represents the number of trips taken dating back to the TTC’s inception in 1921. the TTC pondering TRAVEL ZONES? wisMULTIPLE Integration of the electronic fare system Presto with the TTC won’t be completed until the end of next year, but a prominent transit advocacy group, TTCriders,

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT is concerned how it could affect suburban riders. Unlike the TTC’s current single-zone system, Presto users on services like GO Transit are charged higher fares based on the distance travelled. That has TTCriders worried the TTC, which relies on fares for 70 per cent of its revenue, might be enticed to establish multiple travel zones, which could impact Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York residents who must travel further on average to get to other areas of the city. EXPANDS TRIPS ALONG KITCHENER LINE wGO

GO Transit will boost off-peak rail trips on the Kitchener Line as of early September, the regional transit agency has promised. The move will mean 14 additional trips during the midday Monday to Friday between Union Station and Mount Pleasant GO Station

in Brampton. GO will also increase bus trips between the two destinations. The moves are part of 10-year expansion plan for the GO network which includes boosting the number of weekly trips on the Kitchener line from 80 to 250. THE SOUNDS OF TRANSIT wDOWNLOAD

Want the sounds of the TTC on your smartphone? You can now download ringtones imitating the transit commission’s most iconic alerts. A Reddit user posted notice of the ringtones that include the three-note opening and closing door chimes heard on subway trains, not to mention streetcar gongs and even the TTC’s “Boodle-oop...boop... boop” alert sounded before an announcement is made. Home safety tips for seniors Many seniors today enjoy the ability to live comfortably in their homes. With the right supports and assistance, such as the care provided through the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), the elderly are able remain at home for as long as possible. While living at home is the desire of many seniors, doing so often comes with challenges. Healthrelated limitations as well as the very real possibility of injury have consequences for those who are of an advanced age. Fortunately, there are some simple things that can be done to decrease the possibility of injury or difficulty at home. 1. Good Lighting As we age, our eyesight often becomes compromised. Medical issues such as glaucoma and cataracts make it difficult to see as clearly as we once did. Seniors often have difficulty seeing in dim light, so make sure that your elderly loved one has adequately bright lighting in their homes. In doing so, you will decrease the likelihood of an unexpected fall or stumble. 2. Non-Slip Flooring While hardwood floors may look nice, they are a frequent cause of slips and falls by older people. As well, tiled or floors that are covered with throw rugs can also pose a safety hazard. To decrease the possibility of falls, make sure to install carpet or nonslip flooring. Also, consider the use of treads on stairs or

high-traffic areas. 3. Caregiver Support Having someone look out for the elderly is a surefire way of assuring that they remain safe. If you know of a neighbour, family member, or friend who is in need of assistance, offer to lend a hand. This may include helping with chores around the home that may be difficult or potentially unsafe for an older person. 4. Medication Management Many seniors have various medications that need to be taken on a daily basis, which can lead to error. Taking the wrong medications or forgetting whether the correct dosage has been taken is a very real possibility for the elderly. Keep your loved ones safe by the simple use of pill boxes or similar supports. Also consid-

er a simple checklist or tracking system that can be filled out daily. 5. Assistive Devices Seniors are often in need of assistive devices in order to be mobile within their homes, as well as outside. Wheelchairs, walkers, the use of medic-alerttype tools and similar items can make a considerable difference in the lives of those who need them. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre works with a variety of companies that supply these types of items to seniors in need. Contact the CCAC for details. For more information about supports for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca

KickStart gives kids a heads up in soccer skills Toronto FC helps launch the free, city-wide program CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com It was all about having fun at The Hangar at Downsview Park last Thursday where the full Toronto FC First Team came out to play soccer with more than 200 kids from 15 Toronto Community Housing communities across the city. “This is a lot of fun to be able to spend time with the kids and to see smiles on their faces,” said Michael Bradley, captain of the Toronto FC. He was joined by his teammates to launch the fourth year of KickStart, a free eightweek soccer program for youth aged six to 12. Greg Spearn, interim p re s i d e n t a n d C E O o f Toronto Community Housing Corporation, agreed, encouraging the kids to just have fun playing the beautiful game. “This is the best part of my job,” said Spearn, who addressed the children at the launch event.

“I hope you have an amazing time this year.” Brothers Shayan, 11, and Shahvir, 10, were excited about meeting all the professional soccer players, especially Bradley, their favourite player. “The team captain really shows leadership,” said

Shayan, who also won a leadership award at his school near Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenue. Abdi, Ayub, and Mustafa from the Mabelle community in Etobicoke all agreed they like watching the Toronto FC because the players work as a team.

“They don’t hog the ball,” Abdi said. Mustafa added he liked playing soccer to be with his friends.

Urban film fest could be in final year RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

Screening most of its silent, one-minute offerings on subway platform video screens, The Toronto Urban Film Festival ( TUFF) has provided a vehicle for aspiring independent filmmakers from all over the world. This year’s edition – which takes place at the same time as the headlines-grabbing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) – is the largest in its nine years of existence and will feature work from over 40 countries, on a continuous loop every five minutes for nine days. And with 1.2 million people making use of Toronto’s subway system every day there’s a lot of potential eyeballs to take in original and striking compositions while waiting for the train. While TUFF has managed to score accolades for its unique format since its inception in 2006, this could be the last year for the festival, admits executive direc-

tor Sharon Switzer. Pattison Onestop, the company which has employed Switzer to organize TUFF as well as other artistic output appearing on advertising space it owns within the subway network, recently pulled the plug on its regular program Art in Transit which spotlighted various artists and themes relevant to the commuter experience. Try to keep going In an interview last week Switzer, who is leaving Pattison, said she was doing all she could to ensure TUFF lives on. “At this time the only thing we’re going to do is to try and keep TUFF going,” said Switzer. “I would personally love to be able to celebrate our tenth anniversary next year, but at this point we’re still working on it.” “There’s no guarantee (TUFF will continue), but we are working on it and we all want to continue.” Part of the issue with TUFF, according to Switzer, is its

relative anonymity in a city with as many film festivals as Toronto which is not helped by a lack of promotional resources. “To raise your profile means you have to have a huge marketing budget and we just don’t have that,” she said, declining to say just how much is spent for promoting TUFF or how much Pattison spends to put on the festival. The festival does receive government funding as well as from corporate sponsors in addition to Pattison’s contributions. The TTC doesn’t provide any funding and the subway video screens are owned by Pattison. “We’re just a tiny little festival but luckily we have a built-in audience and an amazing venue like the TTC and the support of Pattison. But still, without budget to do major marketing people are just not going to know about it,” said Switzer.

Ashley Madison website leak may be linked to spin-off crimes ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Toronto Police believe two suicides may be connected to the leak of customer profiles from the website Ashley Madison. Acting Staff Supt. Bryce Evans appealed to the hacking community for help in identifying those responsible for releasing the adultery website’s entire client list of more than 30 million people worldwide. “This is a unique situation that has caused enormous social and economic fallout,” Evans said during a news conference Monday. “Do the right thing and reach out to us.” Toronto-based Avid Life Media, which operates Ashley Madison, is offering a $500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution in the case. Evans said that on July 12 several Avid Life employees had a threatening message appear on their computer

screens accompanied by the AC/DC song Thunderstruck. The post ordered Avid Life to immediately and permanently shut down the Ashley Madison site as well as the Established Men website, which connects young women with successful men. “The person or persons who posted this threat identify themselves as the Impact Team,” Evans said. “The consequences for not complying as noted in this threat would be the release of Ashley Madison and Established Men client lists, including their names, client profiles and credit card data.” Avid Life began an internal investigation, hired a private investigation company and secured the services of Cycura, a firm established by leading cyber security experts. On July 19, the Impact Team released information on two Ashley Madison clients, one in Mississauga and the other in Brockton,

Massachusetts. On Aug. 17, the suspects released the entire Ashley Madison client list along with a message titled Time’s Up. A third message, received last Thursday, taunted Avid Life CEO Noel Biderman: “Hey Noel, you can admit...it’s real now.” The message was accompanied by the release of his emails. Evans said the actions of the hackers are clearly criminal. “This hack is one of the largest data breaches in the world,” he said, adding the hack has sparked spin-off crimes and further victimization, including “two unconfirmed reports of suicides.” Criminals have engaged in online scams by offering to erase customer profiles from the database for a fee. “In addition, there are confirmed cases of criminals attempting to extort Ashley Madison’s clients by threatening to expose that they’re on a list unless payment is received,” Evans said.

We are grateful for the participation of our many returning members and new members as well. Thank you.
