Walking to help end cancer Event raises funds for cancer centre jean ko din jkodin@insidetoronto.com

The 12th annual Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancer is expecting a crowd of about 4,000 walkers this year to help raise funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

East York resident Pamela Maxwell-Steele is looking forward to her first time participating in the event, taking place Sept. 6 and 7.

After being cancer free for two years, she said she is now ready.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for a while... but I just never took the step,” she said.

“It was a lot like when I first went to Wellspring (a cancer support centre at Sunnybrook Hospital). It took a lot for me to take the first step to get in there because it would mean

admitting ‘Oh my gosh, I have cancer.’”

Maxwell-Steele, 44, was diagnosed in January 2012 with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a non-invasive type indicative of early stages of breast cancer, She and her husband, Andrew, were on vacation in Cuba when they both woke up to a puddle of blood in their bed. She discovered that her right nipple was bleeding and there was a lump in her breast. When they returned home, she went to see a doctor at Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH).

In February 2012, her doctors told her that they found cancer in her lymph nodes.

Her DCIS diagnosis turned to Stage IIIA breast cancer and they had to operate. ‘whirlwind’ “It was sort of a complete whirlwind,” said MaxwellSteele. “It threw everyone upside down because no one in my family had breast cancer.”

During eight months of treatments, Maxwell-Steele said she experienced a lot of support from her friends, family and neighbours.

She considers herself to be very lucky to have been diagnosed early and to have had such a strong support system around her all the time.

While she was going through her chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she said staying active made all the difference for her. ‘relax my brain’ “This is what I do. I can’t sit still,” she said. “When I was going to my radiation (treatments) at Sunnybrook, I would ride my bike and go through Taylor Creek Park. It would relax my brain. I wasn’t thinking about anything and I was just focusing on my bike ride.”

Her chemotherapy and radiation treatments ended in October 2012. MaxwellSteele said she wants to participate in the walk not only to celebrate her overcoming breast cancer but to help raise

awareness to the resources and support cancer patients have within the city.

“This walk is going towards cancer research at Princess Margaret, but it will also affect other hospitals like Sunnybrook and (Toronto) East General,” she said.

“There’s so much support out there. People need to know that they’re not alone.

That and keep a positive attitude.”

Maxwell-Steele will be walking with her sister, Alex Leech, and her two best friends, Molly Eddington and Christine Harron.

The 12th annual Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers will take place on Sept. 6 and 7.

Thousands will participate in a two-day walk. Over the last 11 years, the event has raised more than $141 million for funding research, treatment and care for women’s cancers at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Patients of Toronto East General Hospital’s (TEGH) Endocrinology Diabetes Clinic can take a walk with their doc.

Dr. Rebecca Fine, an endocrinologist at the east end hospital, is behind the innovative and unconventional program, which gives patients with Type II diabetes a chance to take a stroll every three months with a team of health care professionals for their regular check-up appointment.

The monthly Diabetes Walking Clinic at TEGH started in March 2012.

Fine said the concept has been so well received some of her colleagues have asked about how they’d go about implementing it.

Brien Pepperdine, who lives a few blocks away from East General, has taken part in the diabetes walking clinic for the last three years.

“Speaking for myself, to have something that has a possibility of being a little more informal and the opportunity for more

relationships between the doctor and the patient is a good thing,” he said.

Pepperdine, who walks his dog several times daily and used to enjoy cycling to work, said he’s seen first hand the benefits of going out for a 30-minute stroll.

Last year, nurses started measuring his blood sugar level before and after his walking appointment.

“We saw a 25 to 30 per cent reduction (in blood sugar). It shows what you can do with even a moderate amount of exercise,” he said, adding while

eating right is crucial for those with diabetes, getting active can also play a major role in wellness.

Toronto East General Ho s p i t a l ’s D i a b e t e s Walking Clinic, which is open to a maximum of six patients per stroll, is also a way for health-care professionals to monitor their patients’ colour, gait, and even mental and emotional states as depression is often associated with diabetes.

“It’s also a great way to educate patients on how to manage further complications of diabetes.”

n this week’s papers and online (http://bit. ly/1pCC7MZ), we take a look at nine key municipal ward races to watch this municipal election year, but truth be told every ward across the city is an important one to watch.

There are ward races with high-profile name recognition (Michael Ford, nephew of mayor Rob and councillor Doug, in Ward 2), some with no incumbent (Ward 20 and 39 with the departures of Adam Vaughan and Mike Del Grande, respectively) and then there are rematches (like in Ward 26 Don Valley West, for example).

And for those few weeks leading up to election day, it is the responsibility of every Torontonian to ask their local candidates important questions about themselves, and what they plan to do for the ward. Because, after all, it’s what happens in your ward that impacts you the most every single day.

Transit, development, safety, green space, visioning studies, the list of issues that could potentially impact one or every ward across the city are many. But what’s key to your neighbourhood, your ward may not be the same as the ward next door. That’s why it’s important to not be too distracted by what’s happening elsewhere in this municipal race. Keep your eye on the local prize.

The race to become mayor is always the hot-button topic, and the one that gets more play in the papers, but the mayor is only one vote on city council – no different than your local councillor. The administration’s vision may come from the mayor, but when it comes to voting, each councillor’s vote counts.

Councillors will fight for what is good for their ward; they will raise issues the city needs to hear; and they should speak on behalf of their constituents. Make sure they do, and that you keep them accountable after they take office.

Remembering contribution of Billy McKay

H

ow important is an individual citizen to their community and how long lasting are the contributions that they make to their fellow citizens?

This can be seen in the form of a plaque dedicated to the memory of Billy McKay, an East York farmer whose generosity and civic spirit has come to benefit each one of us who call the former borough our home.

His most outstanding contributions to our community can be seen today if you stand on the corner of Coxwell and Mortimer avenues.

During the early part of the 20th Century all of the land around that corner was originally Billy’s farmland, which covered around 40 acres.

Today McKayfield Road at Cosburn Avenue marks the outer north-west corner of the property.

In 1921, the population of East York Township was

joe cooper watchdog quickly growing and as act of civic pride Billy donated the land where the East York Civic Centre and R.H. McGregor Public School now stand to the community for the sum of $1.

In 1924, he sold five acres on the same corner at a reasonable price to the old city of Toronto so that the Toronto East General Hospital could be built and also included half an acre for free, along with a brand new house on Sammon Avenue, as his personal donation to the project.

The truth is that after Billy died in the late 1940s those in the community who personally remembered him were the only ones who carried on his memory.

However, that changed on April 22, 2002 when the council chamber of the

East York Civic Centre was packed with people concerned about the contents of a city staff report on the future use of that building.

That report made several recommendations about the civic centre, which included the privatization of the property, and worse, that the decision about the fate of this important public building would be made without any public consultation.

Sitting in the audience that night was Colleen Peacock, who was the great, great niece of McKay and family historian.

She had uncovered the fact that the land the civic centre sat upon had been donated for the benefit of the people of East York and so she joined the citizen of the former borough that evening to help protect this important community institution and resource.

Working in partnership with several local groups and individuals,

Peacock laboured hard to reacquaint residents with their local history and the contributions that McKay had made.

Thanks to the efforts of the East York Historic Society, particularly its president, Martin Rainbow, the plaque project came to be realized.

The plaque can now be found embedded in a rock near the north-west corner of Coxwell and Mortimer avenues.

The descendants of McKay are still researching his history and are reaching out to the East York community for any information that they may have about him.

david nickle the city manage something like that as gracefully as Pennachetti – which is why the timing of his departure, to fall between the Oct. 27 municipal election and the convening of the new council – is such a gift.

Deciding who the new city manager is will, as a result, be among the first orders of business for the 2014-2018 council and mayor. As such, it will give council and the mayor in particular, the opportunity to choose a city manager who will mesh well with the political mandate that Torontonians will have granted.

It’s a lot to ask of a brandnew council, which will have a number of greenhorn councillors blinking in the light and possibly a brand-new mayor who’s never done this kind of thing before. But a sympatico city manager will be essential for the job ahead.

Because it’s going to be a tough job, one way or another.

At the end of this year’s

budget deliberations, Pennachetti warned council that in coming years it will have little choice but to raise property taxes at rates higher than the rate of inflation. Pennachetti said the bureaucracy has cut as much as it can without affecting core services. Tax increases or other new sources of revenue are going to be the rule, to keep the city functioning.

There will be more pressures as well. At some point, the real estate market in Toronto is going to slip, and when that happens, the city’s lucrative land transfer tax is going to start to dry up. If certain mayoral candidates prevail, taxpayers will also have to finance a costly subway through annual property tax levies.

Council will be responsible for all this. They will need a bureaucrat that understands their mandate, understands city finance and gets the value of public service. And as Pennachetti will be otherwise occupied, the sooner they find a replacement the better.

David Miller, mayor at the time, stepped out of his office to talk to reporters about the departure of Shirley Hoy. Scarcely after thanking Hoy for her service, Miller announced that Pennachetti – Toronto’s chief financial officer – would be Hoy’s replacement.

There were some formalities to be observed: Toronto Council had to vote on the matter.

But Miller said that council would do so, and, speaking as a mayor at the height of his influence, he was right.

Pennachetti stepped into the city’s top job easily, in a smooth transition in the middle of a term, with a mayor who had confidence in him.

Pennachetti ran a smooth bureaucracy even through the somewhat rougher transition to a very different mayor in Rob Ford, and the tumultuous years of his term as mayor – through a time when it was unclear that there was anyone in charge politically.

East York designer is making fashion waves

Oliver Dixon’s PRNCE Apparel line gets boost from Mayor Ford’s ALS ice bucket video jean ko din jkodin@insidetoronto.com Oliver Dixon’s phone has been ringing off the hook since Mayor Rob Ford released a YouTube video accepting the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

In the video, Doug Ford is seen sporting a black T-shirt from PRNCE Apparel, Dixon’s new clothing line. Since then, the brand has garnered attention from many mainstream media throughout North America.

Dixon, 19, had always been interested in clothes and fashion, so starting his own business last February only felt like a natural move for him.

“I chose the name PRNCE Apparel because I’m British and half my family is in England. I wanted to do something in that theme,” said Dixon.

“Being from Toronto, I also wanted to pay hommage to my city, so you can see a maple leaf on all the clothes and I also have a hat that has ‘Toronto’ embroidered in Old English.”

Dixon, who lives in East York, describes his brand to be bold and

graphic. He admits that his clothes were originally geared for men, but his products have attracted both male and female customers.

Before he launched his online store through BigCartel.com, he connected with his customers through social media. Dixon would arrange local meet-ups, selling one or two items per customer.

Dixon has been running his online store for two weeks and he’s slowly preparing his business for more designs and larger orders.

“The website process was fun. A lot of people helped me out,” said Dixon. “My cousin’s friends did a photo shoot with my clothes for free and they’re pretty girls so of course my friends took to that.”

Dixon has gained a lot of support for his business from his friends and family, but none more than his mother, Jennifer Dixon.

With her experience in the advertising industry, she provides him with networking support. She uses her business connections and savvy to promote her son’s brand. She was also the one who introduced her son to Doug Ford two months ago.

“Doug used to be one of my vendors and so, I’ve known Doug for many, many years,” she said.

“We had lunch and he met my son and he was so impressed that (Oliver) was running his own business... Doug could not put the shirt on fast enough.”

The night the video was released

on Rob Ford’s YouTube channel, the Dixons were watching the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. When they saw Doug Ford with the PRNCE Apparel T-shirt that Oliver had given him, they were floored.

“Oliver was over the moon and we were jumping up and down like crazy people,” Jennifer said.

“Everyone of my friends saw it. I had no idea Doug would do that.”

That same night, Oliver was on the phone with Doug, talking about a possible collaboration to sell official Ford Nation T-shirts by PRNCE Apparel.

Oliver says the Ford brothers have already approved his design and he is currently working with a local screen printing company to print

about a dozen items.

He is also working T-shirt designs for this year’s Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto, but he says nothing is for certain just yet.

Oliver says he is constanly working on new ideas and new designs, but his main focus is more brand recognition.

“I think one thing I’ve learned is never give up. You never really know when something might rise up,” he said.

“To be honest, I went through a time when I was like ‘oh crap,’ but next thing you know, Doug Ford is one of my biggest supporters... my mom and Doug Ford.”

City transportation officials will investigate whether it makes sense to bring in a speed limit of 30 km-h on Leaside streets.

The request from Don Valley West Councillor John Parker at the recent meeting of North York community council comes weeks after six-

year-old Georgia Walsh died after being hit by a minivan at the intersection of McRae Drive and Millwood Road July 16.

The driver was charged July 31 with failing to stop at a red light and careless driving and will appear in court Sept. 8.

“Residents within the Leaside community have expressed their concerns with regards to traffic infiltration

and vehicle speeds within the local community,” Parker said in a letter to councillors.

“The land uses within the Leaside community consist of single family residential properties, schools, parks and green spaces. Installation of 30 km-h speed limit zones will improve pedestrian and motorist safety throughout the community.”

Online Support – The TorontoCentralHealthline.ca is a onestop repository of information about community services and supports and includes a Health Library, Caregiver Exchange and Stroke Resources.

Medical and Healthcare Referrals – The Care Coordinators at Toronto Central CCAC work closely with primary care doctors and family health teams.

Seniors in need of a referral can be easily connected to an appropriate practitioner.

Specialized Services – Support for special needs related to Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, stroke recovery, palliative care and convalescent care can also be arranged.

Supportive Housing – Sometimes a move to a retirement home or a housing situation that is geared towards seniors is the best option for someone with advanced age. Families and loved ones looking for assistance in this area can call the CCAC for information and support.

Referral To Long-term Care – For family and loved ones of seniors who are in need of longterm care, a call to the CCAC will provide the information and resources required to make the move to a new living environment.

ith only 415 votes separating the leading candidates in the last municipal election — Ward 26 Don Valley West is shaping into one of the key council races to watch in Toronto.

Jon Burnside, who came in second in 2010, is looking to rally back as he challenges incumbent councillor John Parker again.

A former Toronto police officer and successful business owner, Burnside has been a long-time community advocate for the ward.

“Everyone talks about what they want to do, but I’m a candidate that has a proven track record of doing and getting results in the community,” he said.

Burnside has been involved in Ward 26 communities for 25 years from policing to coaching youth soccer, baseball and hockey.

Considering the vast diversity in the ward, which ranges from the affluent tree-lined streeets of Leaside to the high-density highrises of Thorncliffe Park, some parts of the community are feeling left out.

Also running for council in the ward are Ishrath Velshi and David Sparrow.

Vote spread Parker’s challengers have criticized him as being non-inclusive when it comes to serving the entire ward.

In the 2010 municipal election, votes were spread among seven candidates with nearly 69 per cent of them being against Parker.

“I just do the job that I feel that I should be doing and representing the area the best I can,” said Parker.

“I just hope the voters understand that we live in large modern city that is growing at an unprecedented rate which presents challenges and opportunities.”

ard 2 Etobicoke North is the race to watch to see if name recognition is all it takes to get a seat on city council. Polls indicate that twentysomething, Humber College student Michael Ford, nephew to Rob and Doug, leads the race, with Rexdale native and financial planner Andray Domise coming in second. Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research says name recognition, however, only goes so far. The Ford brand isn’t untarnished and Michael Ford has kept a low profile so far in the election, with his uncle Doug saying there’s no reason for him to speak to reporters. In order to beat the Ford brand in north Etobicoke, pundits say candidates need to do a “huge amount of grassroots, streetlevel, door-to-door canvassing” to get their own name out there.

I

t’s a rematch in Ward 9 between incumbent Councillor Maria Augimeri and businessman Gus Cusimano, which saw the former almost losing her job in the 2010 municipal election by less than 100 votes.

Augimeri, who has represented the area for three decades, held onto her seat by 89 votes four years ago.

A court challenge to try to have the election overturned by Cusimano ensued. He initially won the challenge but then lost on appeal. He was then charged with breaching the Municipal Elections Act by voting for himself in a ward he did not reside in. He pled guilty and agreed to a $1,000 fine.

hree candidates have so far signed up to run in Ward 12 - York South Weston in the upcoming 2014 municipal election on Oct. 27.

Longtime incumbent Frank Di Giorgio is running again in the riding he’s served in since 2000. Before the city’s amalgamation, Di Giorgio was a North York councillor first elected in 1985.

It will be Nick Dominelli’s third time running for Ward 12, finishing second both in 2010 and 2006 by less than 500 and 2,300 votes, respectively.

Lekan Olawoye, who’s built a strong local profile as executive director of For Youth Initiative for the past six years, will also be on the ballot to represent Ward 12.

ith former councillor Adam Vaughan leaving the municipal scene to join the Liberal Party of Canada as MP for TrinitySpadina, the race for the council seat in Ward 20 has attracted a full slate of candidates.

The ward is one of the city’s most diverse in terms of neighbourhoods, from the artsy, primarily low-rise Annex community to a growing number of highrise condominiums downtown.

It has seen its share of change in recent years, including an overhaul of the entertainment district, massive condo development and the rapidly redeveloping waterfront.

t’s the third matchup for municipal candidates Cesar Palacio and Alejandra Bravo in Ward 17 - Davenport, who faced off against one another in 2003 and 2006. The last time around, Palacio won with only a couple hundred votes ahead of Bravo. The incumbent says he’s running on his track record and experience, citing his advocacy for fiscal responsibility and neighbourhood revitalization. Bravo, on the other hand, feels the ward needs a change and thinks Palacio’s close alignment with Rob Ford is detrimental to the constituents of Ward 17. She’s mostly concerned about creating jobs and expanding transit.

This election race promises to be an exciting one this time as three-time incumbent Paula Fletcher is running for a fourth term.

She won the last election in 2010 by just 259 votes against television personality, Liz West.

West is also running again.

Jane Farrow, a journalist, former executive assistant to Ward 32 councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon and founding director of Jane’s Walk, is also trying her hand at representing Ward 30 as is Dan Trayes, Francis Russell, Kim Diep and Mark Borden.

he ward’s current councillor, Ana Bailão, has been leading the charge in Ward 18 for the past four years and will battle it out with a set of new candidates this year.

In the last municipal election, Bailão defeated her closest rival for council, Kevin Beaulieu, by 1,366 votes. Of the 10 registered candidates so far, nine are candidates who didn’t run in the 2010 municipal election.

Issues surrounding development, transportation, and green space are key in the ward.

Ward 18 is known to have a high Portuguese population according to the 2011 Canadian Household Survey, which plays well for Bailão, who is Portugeuse. However, the riding is changing quickly, and the average household income is growing.

Located just west of the downtown core, Ward 18 runs from Dovercourt Road to Dundas Street West, north to Dupont Street, with its most southern point at King Street West, Davenport is a vibrant area of the city.

ith the decision by veteran incumbent councillor Mike Del Grande to step down earlier this year, the race for the Ward 39 Scarborough-Agincourt council seat features a number of high-profile candidates.

Running for the seat are Christopher Blueman, Cozette Giannini, Clayton Jones, Jim Karygiannis, Franco Ng and Patricia Sinclair.

Collectively, the candidates have deep community roots and a wealth of political experience.

Karygiannis served as the area’s MP for more than 25 years before resigning his federal seat earlier this year Blueman, who grew up in the area, served four years as a councillor in Sundridge, Ont., before moving back to Scarborough.

Sinclair has been actively involved in numerous city issues, mostly related to transit service in Scarborough.

Ng worked as an assistant in Councillor Del Grande’s office.

transit wants bus garage approved wCouncillor A TTC board member is imploring city council to quickly approve a planned bus garage on TTC-owned land near Kennedy Road and McNicoll Avenue.

Josh Colle’s motion asks council put aside an unexpected decision by the city’s planning and growth management committee earlier this month to defer consideration of the bus garage plan until 2015, and instead approve the project’s environmental report and send it the province for further consideration.

Submissions must reflect the character of the neighbourhoods they’ll be in and the finished art will be maintained for at least five years, the group said.

Artists have until Sept. 22 to submit proposals for the project which has a budget of up to $159,000.
