Valley Park Riverdale Share on stage cricket pitch moves closer to completion RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Boosters of a new cricket field for East York will know soon if they are one step closer to securing over $100,000 in funding for the community-supported initiative. The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field Project is hoping it has enough votes to reach the finals of the Aviva Community Fund online contest for its entry Let There Be Lights, which seeks to have outdoor lighting installed for the planned cricket field, to be located on the grounds of Valley Park Middle School as well as on former lands belonging to Toronto Hydro lying adjacent to the Overlea Boulevard school. To get to the final round of the competition the Valley Park group, which has already reached semifinals, needs to place in the Top 10 for entries with a budget of $100,000 or higher. If the idea makes the finals, it will receive $5,000 and the chance to win a grand prize of up to $150,000. Voting to reach the finals ended yesterday afternoon. With around 90 minutes to go, the Valley Park entry was outside of the Top 10 with >>>CRICKET, page 6

Work together to ease strike impact
T
his week, Toronto residents saw students from numerous high schools take to the streets to protest the loss of extra-curricular activities at their high schools as part of the continuing battle between the Ontario governour view ment and its public school teachers. Next week, however, the heat Sharing of is really going to be turned up effective ideas as a one-day strike by public elementary school teachers in encouraged Toronto is expected at some point before next Friday, Dec. 21. The union representing the elementary school teachers, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), has been calling one-day strikes in school boards across the province since Monday of this week. The ETFO is giving boards, and parents, 72 hours notice of the impending strikes. Perhaps by the end of this week or early next week, Toronto residents with children in the public system should know what day the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) will strike the elementary schools. The TDSB will close the doors of its schools with students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8. The board has sent home letters to parents encouraging them to start making alternate arrangements for their elementary school children now. For thousands of parents this is going to be a costly, complicated and stressful day. But by working together in our neighbourhoods and school communities we can make it easier for those facing challenges. Communities in other boards have come up with some good ways of dealing with the strikes beyond taking the day off work or sending the kids to other family members. For instance, the City of Ottawa announced it would be extending its before and after school programs on the day of the strike. We expect to see an announcement from the City of Toronto shortly that it will be doing the same. Also, other organizations are stepping up. In the case of Ottawa again, the Ottawa Senators said they’d offer a full-day hockey camp that day for kids aged five to 12. Hello, Toronto Maple Leafs – there’s a great idea. There are many other great ideas out there parents can start sharing with each other right now, so that those who are able to help with child care on strike day can do so while those who must go to work can also do so. newsroom

To the editor: I would deduce that Clayton Ruby’s victory in dislocating Mayor Rob Ford from city hall has outraged hard-working, taxpaying Torontonians like myself who welcomed Ford’s prudence after the excesses of the David Miller years. Should Rob Ford lose his appeal I only hope for the sake our city that Doug Holyday or Doug Ford will fill the void, shielding Toronto from regressing back to the Miller-era days, which elected to support union jobs rather than go with the most cost-efficient TTC streetcars and subway train replacements at the expense of the taxpayers. They also gave us the abhorred land-transfer tax that has hindered real estate transactions. David C. Searle
Shaping up to be a truly forgettable NHL season
F
ess up, all you NHL fans out there pining over missing your beloved hockey. Even if this lockout drags on until January and the league ends up with just a 48-game or 60-game season and the New York Islanders end up playing the Florida Panthers two or three fewer times than they the normally do, are you really going to lose any sleep over it? As much as you love the game of hockey, don’t you think an 82-game schedule, is a tad long? Come on now. Be honest. You know it. I know it. The owners and players know it. Heck, deep down even Don Cherry knows it. The fact is, the wear and tear is way too much on us all. The movers and shakers behind the scenes are doing everybody – and the game – a humongous favour by shortening the season.
guest column
jamie wayne
Too bad they’re only going to be shortening one season. At least that’s how we all feel today, with autumn still in the air. Temperatures drop The moment the temperature drops that same endless NHL season doesn’t seem so long after all. In fact, everything about the league suddenly makes sense. Even the Islanders and the Panthers facing off two or three too few or too many times. For some reason amnesia automatically sets in when winter arrives. Old Jack
Frost takes his first nip out of your schnozz and presto, you immediately forget everything about the NHL that drives you up the wall. You forget that outside of emotional rivalries such as the Leafs/Canadiens, Oilers/Flames and Penguins/Flyers, for example, regular season games have about as much hitting as a pairs figure-skating ice dance samba. You forget about how you’re constantly lulled to sleep by the neutral zone trap and the left wing lock and are so thankful that they just don’t cut it during the playoffs, even though you have no idea what the heck either one of them is, let alone which is which. You forget that every team – except your favourite one, of course – seems to qualify for the postseason. You forget that the team that finishes first overall often gets bounced in the first round.
In short, you forget that no matter how good you thought the regular season game was that you saw last night, it will not even closely resemble the worst playoff game of the year. Ticket prices And you forget that ticket prices will likely go up for the playoffs, and we’re talking waaaaay up. Yes, even if half the season is cancelled. Yeah, you forget all that when those first snowflakes fall. Which means only one thing: the owners and players must be praying for the nastiest winter ever. Because fans are going to have a heck of a lot more to forget about this year than ever before. n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Cricket pitch slated to open in July >>>from page 1 over 10,000 votes in support of the outdoor lighting proposal. Project co-chair Lisa GroganGreen said she and her team of volunteers worked hard to get the word out about the contest and the voting. Through various initiatives, the group has already managed to raise since 2011 more than one million dollars for the first phase
of the $1.7-million project, which will also house two soccer pitches, a basketball court and a red clay running track - and hopes to break ground before winter arrives. Also planned for the space, which was designed by architect Shompa Hai, are an amphitheatre, herb and vegetable garden, butterfly meadow and wetlands to be created in part through the collection of rainwater from the cricket field.
Grogan-Green said adding outdoor lighting to the space would allow for programing of activities past 5 p.m., as well as facilitate winter events to benefit an estimated 9,000 kids ages five and older, many of whom play cricket into the night in school parking lots relying only car headlights for illumination. The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field is scheduled to open in July of 2013.

hat a difference a year makes. Last year, the operating and capital budget was a battleground between left and right, downtown and inner suburbs, Margaret Atwood and Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford. The budget committee wrestled with hot-button issues such as the closure of city zoos and the denuding of public libraries. It was enough of a fight that Toronto Council finally took part of it away from the budget committee and Mayor Rob Ford, and set the stage for a dramatic power shift in which council wrestled pretty much everything away from the mayor. Mayor Ford and his supporters warned that in this year’s budget, council and the city would have to go through the war all over again. As it’s turned out, that’s not so much the case. The 2013 operating and capital budgets are definitely still a thing of the Ford administration. The budget will see tax dollars invested in road repairs to

unprecedented levels — driven even higher by the need to repair and rehabilitate the crumbling Gardiner Expressway — covering roads in cash rather than borrowed money. To help fund that, there will be some cuts to fire, police and ambulance, and projects near and dear to the hearts of downtowners and the left wing on council — such as arts funding — aren’t getting the attention they might have under another mayor. But generally, this is a budget that doesn’t take many risks. There is no attempt to remove the land transfer tax. The budget doesn’t pretend to freeze property taxes. It doesn’t make an attack on downtown services particularly, just as it doesn’t reward suburban communities, especially.
Longtime east-end-based band Whiskey Jack has a list and they’re checking it twice to make sure all of their Christmas gems are polished and well rehearsed for their big Christmas show at the Eton House, 710 Danforth Ave. (just east of the Pape subway station) this Saturday.
It does make a significant and potentially damaging change to the way the city funds repairs, using cash instead of borrowing — but that is a serious doubleentry accounting problem, and not an especially significant political problem. It shouldn’t surprise that the Ford administration is taking it easy on this one, or at least playing things a little more slyly. Last year, Mayor Ford could still point to a strong electoral mandate as a basis to push hard on an agenda that was both aggressive and divisive. That mandate is still there in theory. But the mayor and the agenda are walking dead in these weeks before Christmas, as the budget committee wraps up its deliberations. They’ve been a sullen affair; budget committee chair Mike Del Grande presided over public deputations early this week, underneath the projection of a growing spreadsheet on which he costed every single thing Torontonians asked for in their three minutes. But again, that’s nothing com-
pared to the marathon meetings Mayor Ford held last year. Spreadsheets have nothing on sleep deprivation. And from the look of things, 2013 has nothing on 2012.

Christmas is busy at Nisbet Lodge Having served the seniors of east Toronto for almost 40 years, Nisbet Lodge is like an old neighbour. Located at Pape and Danforth, the organization provides long-term care in its 103-bed home, and 62-unit seniors housing (with a mix of market and rent geared to income), located next door in McClintock Manor. Nisbet Lodge host a variety of activities every month to keep seniors active and connected to their community. The December activity calendar is jam packed with festive fun. Performances include the Upper Canada Choir and the Treble Maker’s. There is also lots of carol singing with groups from the Salvation Army and Forward Baptist Church. Santa will also take the time to drop by. Thanks to his elves on the Family Council , all residents receive a card and gift. Founded by Calvary Church Toronto in 1973, its mission states that “Nisbet Lodge/McClintock Manor are caring Christian homes dedicated to providing long-term care and seniors housing in the heart of the Danforth.” Many of the residents, past and present, have roots in east Toronto. For the organizations 35th anniversary they published a collection of stories called, Our

in your neighbourhood Danforth: One Hundred Years of Memories. On the long-term side, families like to be close to their loved ones. Nisbet is the last remaining not-forprofit home in the Toronto Danforth Riding. Tenants at McClintock Manor (named after the builder who built many homes in East York) like the fact they are close to the subway, and have easy access to shops and restaurants on the Danforth. They also enjoy the wonderful neighbourhood views from the building’s balconies. Nisbet has been accredited since 1997 with Accreditation Canada and has earned its reputation in the sector as a trustworthy facility with kindhearted care. The organization also runs a charitable foundation that supports their ongoing work. The current campaign ‘Nisbet Lodge: For Now…For Ever’ is helping to raise funds for a new nurse call system and to support planning for Nisbet’s future. Most people prefer to live on their own for as long as possible, but sometimes a move to long-term care or seniors housing is necessary and even advisable. For more information on the variety of services available or to arrange a tour contact Barbara Snell at 416-469-1105 ext. 1122 or check out www.NisbetLodge.com.
If you remember recess... you’ll remember the joy of racing from behind your school desk and picking up a bat, ball, skipping rope or marbles; of going from what you had to do to what you wanted to do. We remember too. That’s why Tridel created Delmanor retirement rental residences, and your opportunity to leap into an active retirement. We call it the Delmanor experience. You’ll call it permanent recess. Come tour our “playground” and discover recess in retirement. Visit us today … that’s the sound of the bell.

Varsity sports grounded at public high schools Varsity sports for Toronto public board high schools have been ground to a halt, while the Catholic board will continue uninterrupted. “The TDSSAA (Toronto District Secondary School Athletic Association) schedules will be suspended as of Dec 10th,” said Rob Harris, athletic director of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) in an email. The TDSB’s sports program is set to become a victim of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) ongoing contract dispute with the province.
The OSSTF earlier this week announced a withdrawal of voluntary and extra-curricular activities by all of its members Monday. Catholic high school teachers are in a different union, which has settled their differences with the province and are in the process of signing agreements with their local boards. “TCDSB (Toronto Catholic District School Board) schools are not affected,” said John W. Yan, the TCDSB’s senior coordinator for communications. Winter sports currently under way include hockey, basketball and volleyball.
Leaside Wildcats hosting hockey games The Leaside Wildcats junior hockey team are going through a season typical of an expansion franchise. In their first 16 games in the ultra competitive, 20-team Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), they’ve recorded two wins, two overtime ties and 12 losses, including one in overtime. But three of those regulation losses have been by one goal, and two by two goals. And five of their losses have come to league’s top four teams. Leaside are one of three teams from Toronto, the other two being the Toronto Aeros (11-3) and the Etobicoke Dolphins (9-5).
Leaside will be hoping to get back into win column approaching the holidays with five straight home matches as follows: n Hosting Cambridge, Friday, Dec. 14, 8 p.m. at East York Arena; n Hosting Stoney Creek Saturday, Dec. 15, 4 p.m. at Mattamy Athletic Centre (old Maple Leaf Gardens); n Hosting Bluewater, Sunday, Dec. 16, 1 p.m., at Leaside Arena; n Hosting Kingston, Friday, Dec. 21, 8 p.m. at East York Arena; n Hosting Southwest, Saturday, Dec. 22, 1 p.m. at Scarborough Village Arena.

Oakwood Collegiate’s Brody Clarke, left, and teammate D’wain William battle Eastern Commerce Collegiate’s Tyler Stone for a rebound during high school senior boys’ basketball action last Thursday afternoon at Oakwood. Eastern went on to win the game 75-70. The game was one of the last for Toronto public high schools as secondary school teachers have ended extra-curricular activities, including sports, as part of their ongoing dispute with the provincial government.
