Volunteers sought for Out of the Cold program at Eastminster United Express Your Talent contest lights up East York Town Centre East York Town Centre located at Thorncliffe Park and Overlea Blvd. launched Express Your Talent Contest on November, 5th in search of local talent! East York residents were invited to record a one-minute video of their special talent with their videos posted on the mall’s website www.eastyorkshops.com for the public to vote on their favourite performance! The top 10 performed on Saturday, November, 24th live

in front of a panel of judges and three acts were chosen as winners in EYTC 2012 Contest. Duo brothers Joshua and David Lopez went home with first place honours winning the grand prize of $500.00. MacKenzie Rhodes took home second prize and Nathanial Snow lined up third. “We wanted to showcase local talent from our community in a unique and entertaining way, so we developed the Express Your Talent Contest. Everyone was amaz-

ing and extremely talented, the judges definitely had their work cut out for them in selecting the winners,” says Eleni Koukoulidis, Marketing Director of East York Town Centre. East York Town Centre is proudly managed by Morguard, located at 45 Overlea Blvd. at Don Mills and Eglinton, just off the DVP. East York Town Centre offers the convenience of onestop shopping at the centre of this thriving community.

Eastminster United Church’s Out of the Cold program needs volunteers for the next three Fridays. The group requires at least 10 more volunteers the following Friday nights: Dec. 21, 28 and Jan. 4 to be able to serve dinner to its guests, which visit the church in the Braodview and Danforth avenues area. Eastminster’s Out of the Cold program offers shelter, a nourishing meal, access to a nurse, hot showers, and decent used clothing. Each Friday night up to 130 guests are fed, and the church has room to sleep 45. Overnight guests are fed a hot

breakfast Saturday morning and given a bag lunch to take away with them. The church’s program is run by volunteers and is funded solely through donations from the congregation and community. The cost of the program averages $1,000 weekly. Volunteers (13 years of age and over) are always needed to cover a variety of shifts and tasks each Friday evening and Saturday morning. Volunteer sign-up can be done online at www.eastminsteruc.org/out-of-the-cold For details, call 416-463-2179 or email eastminster@bellnet.ca

Winter solstice celebration set for Thorncliffe Park RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A new performance arts festival for Thorncliffe Park promises to bring together different cultural offerings in celebration of the season. The inaugural Winter Solstice Festival of Light runs this Friday and Saturday and will feature performances and activities, culminating with a Fire and Lantern Parade travelling from East York Town Centre to nearby R.V. Burgess Park. The event marks the end of a busy first year for main festival organizer Diasporic Genius, an arts engagement group which co-ordinated and participated in four community

‘It’s about trying to bridge professional performance and small-scale spectacle with participation, bringing the community together with stories from where we came.’ David Buchbinder, artistic director events over the course of 2012, one for each season, in its first year of existence, said artistic director David Buchbinder. “It’s about trying to bridge professional performance and small-scale spectacle with participation, bringing the community together with

WoodGreen Community Services offers support for Blue Christmas challenges JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com While the holiday season may be the “most wonderful time of the year,” it can also be the most challenging. “Historically, it’s an extremely difficult time for people. All of the day-to-day stresses are highlighted,” said Adam Smith, director of mental health and developmental services, homelessness and housing help services at WoodGreen Community Services. Pressure to be perfect “There’s lots of pressure to be perfect.” Smith called the holidays a “season of extremes,” an emotional time when relationship and socioeconomic issues are often brought to light over a two- to three-week period. He also said it can be a time when it’s especially tough for those experiencing depression or anxiety to access counselling services. Smith urged those in need of someone to talk to or those who could benefit from some nonjudgmental advice on how to cope with this time of year to make use of WoodGreen’s free, drop-in counselling service, which runs Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m.

stories from where we came,” said Buchbinder. “A festival is a great way of showcasing that.” The festival begins tomorrow evening starting at 5 p.m. with a full slate of activities and performances at the East York Town Centre, located

at 45 Overlea Blvd. Then on Saturday more performances from local and city artists are planned from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Thorncliffe Park Youth Centre, followed by the one-hour lantern parade starting at the south exit of the East York Town Centre. Buchbinder said participants in the lead-up to the festival are busy crafting their own lanterns with which to inscribe a symbol or picture related to their individual histories. “People tell personal stories of their lives and these lanterns will represent what they’ve gone through,” said Buchbinder. A “seven-minute feast” back at the

youth centre, located at 45 Overlea Blvd., following the parade will close the festival. Performers scheduled to appear include master storyteller Inger Lise Oelrich, Anne Barber of Shadowland Theatre, multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulhamid, bellydancer Roula Said, percussionist Jaash Singh, jazz musician RJ Satchithananthan and Buchbinder. The event is sponsored by the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office, the East York Town Centre and Shadowland Theatre. For more information about the solstice celebrations, visit www. diasporicgenius.com or call 416583-5782.

The perfect tree

Anyone in need of a little extra help or support during this challenging time is more than welcome to come in and chat with one of the volunteer counsellors, all of whom have master’s degrees in counselling or social work. The east-end social service agency’s no-barrier, year-long program is at 815 Danforth Ave., Ste. 202, which is just west of Jones Avenue. “We’re here to help people. We have an understanding ear and we’ll help you set some goals and make positive changes,” he said, adding with a little advance notice translators can also be arranged for those who don’t have a strong command of the English language. Anyone interested in learning more about this local service should call the program’s coordinator, Sharna Cohen, at 416-645-6000, ext. 2512. Because of its long history in the city’s east end, Smith said WoodGreen can also provide people with information as well as referrals to other local social service agencies over the holidays. “You don’t have to be alone this holiday season. There are a lot of people who care and understand what you’re going through,” he said. “A network of support is there for you.”

Celebrating the season – and local artistic talents

I

t may be green. It may even be warm. But warm weather won’t change the true spirit of the Christmas season. On the front page of The East York Mirror and the eight other Toronto Community News newspapers we publish our view today, we feature a seasonal piece of art with a local connection. We must The holiday season is underencourage way and we thought featuring good works from the community would be a welcome change from artisans’ efforts tough issues, tough headlines. You can see the complete set of art from our front page photos in our online photo gallery found at bit.ly/TCN_holidayart You will see snow scenes. Stained glass. Classic and contemporary art. You will quickly see this community is rich in artistic talent and that our artists have a flair for understanding and reflecting the neighbourhoods of Toronto. Artists offer the same kind of experience as a newspaper. An artist chronicles a special place at a special time – and you can refer to that piece of work far into the future. A photo, a story or a piece of art can convey our history, our culture, our past, present or future. It’s fascinating how the warmth of a piece of art can melt the cold of a true winter day. To all of our readers, our online users, our advertiser partners and all community members, we wish you the best of the holiday season. Whether a Christian celebrating Christmas or not, this season offers time and opportunity to reflect on all that is accomplished, and offers the chance for us all to take steps to make the year ahead even better. In this space on the page, we often charge or challenge people to do something – and try to send a message you won’t see in other publications. Today, we’d like to challenge you during the year to buy a work of local art. We all need to encourage the efforts of our community’s artisans. That one small purchase, supports a local artist – and turns you automatically into a community builder. That piece of local art can be enjoyed by you, or give a whole younger generation a view of what was important to their ancestors’ culture, life and community. Encourage the artists. And keep the spirit of the season alive in their continued good works. newsroom

To the editor: Re: ‘Mayor’s mandate must continue,’ Letters, Dec. 13. I find it most interesting that people like letter writer David C. Searle are pleased Mayor Rob Ford does not support unions. I gather the letter writer is not employed by a union, therefore unions are wrong. Years ago when men tried to unionize a company, they were often beaten for the attempt to do so. These brave men brought about wonderful changes for many of the workers. No more 60-hour weeks with poor pay. No more overtime with maybe $1 for supper money. It is not the unions that are causing the upset in today’s economy. If union jobs are wiped out, the letter writer would be surprised at the change back to the “good old days” of long hours and low wages – not only in union jobs. Joy Taylor

Little clause stands between me and Santa

S

anta Claus was scheduled to make a special appearance at a mall near me last Saturday, so I decided to drop by to have a heart-to-heart with the big guy. I wasn’t the only one. When I got there I encountered the longest line-up I’ve seen since the opening of Star Trek 99: The Search For A Believable Hair Piece For Kirk. At the back was my neighbour’s daughter, Jasmine. I tucked in behind her and gave her a tap on the shoulder. Normally Jasmine breaks into a big smile when she sees me, but this time she frowned. “I hate to break it to you, Jamie, but you’re not allowed in this line,” she scolded. “Why not?” I asked. “You have to be little,” she said sternly. “But I’m five-foot-two. You always tell me how

but seriously

short I am.” “I meant a little boy or a little girl,” she clarified. “Says who?” I cried. “Christmas 101.” “I never heard that carol,” I said skeptically. “It’s not a carol. It’s a rule.” (She pronounced it “ruwull.”) “The golden ru-wull,” I asked. “I don’t know what colour,” she replied resolutely. “But you better get out of line fast or somebody might call a security guard.” “What if I go to that face-painting booth next to his sleigh and get my face painted to look like a little boy or little girl?”

Jasmine scowled. “That’s the oldest trick in the book. Santa didn’t get to be Santa falling for that kind of stuff.” “But if I don’t stand in line, how am I going to sit on his lap?” I whimpered. “You can’t sit on Santa’s lap. You have to be little to do that, too, obviously.” “But I’m not much bigger than you are and judging by the speed at which kids grow these days, you’ll probably be taller than me by the time we get to Santa.” “Jamie, what part of little BOY or little GIRL don’t you understand?” “But if I don’t sit on his lap how will he know what I want for Christmas?” “You can’t ask Santa for stuff. You have to be a little boy or a little girl.” “Can I tell the two elves he brought with him what I want?” I pleaded. “No. You have to be a little boy or a little girl.” “Can I touch Rudolph’s

shiny red nose?” “No. You have to be a little boy or a little girl.” “Can’t Santa make an exception? One time? For me? Pretty please?” “Sorry, Jamie. But a ruwull is a ru-wull.” “Can’t you just toss me a bone here at least?” I sniveled pathetically. She paused for what seemed like an eternity and then took a deep breath. “OK. Though it goes against my better judgment, I’ll ask Santa for a bone. But I’m gonna pretend it’s for me and I’m definitely not going to toss it to you until he’s looking the other way. I’ve got a tradition to uphold. Little kids all over this mall – and the world – are counting on me.”

Council has never seen a year like this one T

here has never been a more interesting year in the history of amalgamated Toronto Council than 2012, and that’s saying something. Toronto, after all, has had some interesting times in its short history since megacity amalgamation took effect at the start of 1998. We’ve lived through epic corruption scandals, high comedy from goofball mayors, endless battles with the provincial and federal governments, riots and mass arrests, and stinky, stinky garbage strikes.

But 2012? You have outdone yourself, o waning year. The one interesting thing that didn’t happen this year was a garbage strike, and that’s something. But over the past 12 months, it has been a wild, reality-showworthy ride: Toronto has seen nothing less than a seismic shift of power and influence away from a mayor who was just two years ago elected with a very powerful mandate. Mayor Rob Ford’s fall from grace, such as it was, was a constant narrative through the

year – and not just because we scribes made it so. The year began on an optimistic note, as the mayor and his brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, started on what seemed like an easy, humanizing and healthful project, to drop a few pounds (well, 50) over six months. The mayor’s faltering diet and exercise regime would become an all-to-apt metaphor for his faltering control of council. In the early months of 2012, councillors took matters into their own hands. The 2012 budget was re-made on the floor of council, to the mayor’s chagrin. And council didn’t stop there, voting to kill Ford’s dream of a subway to Scarborough and restore the light rail transit plan

that he’d campaigned against. One could go on all column about the indignities that council heaped on the mayor’s office. But at least half of the fun of this reality show of a year comes from the mayor himself. As early as February, Ford sowed the seeds of what might be his political downfall, when he spoke and voted on an integrity commissioner report demanding he repay $3,150 in donations to his football charity.

As a result, Ford finishes the year awaiting an appeal of a judge’s ruling that will see him removed from office if it’s upheld. In between February and today, the mayor’s been called to the carpet for reading while driving, chasing a reporter, and skipping council meetings to coach high school football, among other things. In 2013, all of this could culminate in something even more interesting: a mid-term mayoral byelection, in which Toronto voters are asked to come in and pronounce judgement on the wild, precipitous year that’s just now passing. n David Nickle is The Mirror’s city hall columnist. Stories of little heroes shared in special

SickKids helped youngster in fight against cancer JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

Even before eight-year-old Lilah Petersiel was born, her parents knew the youngster was set to face a tough road. The Petersiels knew from ultrasounds she was going to have only one kidney, which would not necessarily cause problems, but on the day she was born, the Petersiels got some more bad news. “She had an ultrasound and when the G.P. read the results, he said ‘the kidney’s fine, but there’s something else here and it’s something I can’t treat here.’” said Lilah’s father, Eric

Petersiel. She was transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children and within two weeks she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma – an aggressive cancer most common among young children – and had surgery to remove a tumour from her adrenal gland. A few short months later, a routine CT scan showed she had early stage liver cancer and Lilah had to undergo additional surgery to remove part of the organ and eight months of chemotherapy. “We’re so thankful that we had SickKids to take care of our daughter and our family,” Petersiel said. “It was quite an ordeal, but we were incredibly lucky to have this institution in our community.” While Lilah has shown no evidence of cancer for years – the family celebrated her anniversary with no evidence of disease on Dec. 8 - the Petersiels have not forgotten the care she received while at SickKids. The Toronto family started Lilah’s Fund (www.lilahsfund.com), which has raised some $700,000 in funds to help neuroblastoma research. Money raised through Lilah’s Fund goes directly to SickKids to fuel research into childhood cancers. “It’s amazing to me that they have the world’s leading scientists and clinicians (at SickKids),” Petersiel said. “They are literally on the edge of breaking through and finding out so much more about the sources and cures for kids’ cancer.”

“If you look back, 30 years ago, the cure rates for leukemia were under 10 per cent and now they’re over 90 per cent.” - Eric Petersiel While SickKids was able to save Lilah’s life, many others are not so fortunate. Petersiel said Lilah has had five friends die, whom she had met over the course of her treatment, and the family hopes Lilah’s Fund can help bring about the necessary breakthroughs. “If you look back, 30 years ago, the cure rates for leukemia were under 10 per cent and now they’re over 90 per cent,” Petersiel said. Lilah’s story will be told as part of a twohour special called Believing in Heroes, which outlines the stories of many of the children who have been treated at SickKids. The program takes an in-depth look at the difficulties many children face and how the care provided at the hospital helps them and their families during difficult times. Believing in Heroes will air on CTV from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.

Photo/COURTESY

The story of Lilah Petersiel’s battle with neuroblastoma will be told in, ‘Believing in Heroes’. Lilah’s fund has raised more than $700,000 for neuroblastoma research at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
