Eastminster United Church’s Out of the Cold program needs volunteers for the next three Fridays. The group requires at least 10 more volunteers the following Friday nights: Dec. 21, 28 and Jan. 4 to be able to serve dinner to its guests, which visit the church in the Braodview and Danforth avenues area. Eastminster’s Out of the Cold program offers shelter, a nourishing meal, access to a nurse, hot showers, and decent used clothing. Each Friday night up to 130 guests are fed, and the church has room to sleep 45. Overnight guests are fed a hot

breakfast Saturday morning and given a bag lunch to take away with them. The church’s program is run by volunteers and is funded solely through donations from the congregation and community. The cost of the program averages $1,000 weekly. Volunteers (13 years of age and over) are always needed to cover a variety of shifts and tasks each Friday evening and Saturday morning. On our cover: Playter Crescent by Petro Dhimitri The painter of this landscape has dubbed himself Petro “The Canadian” as he is proud to call Canada home since his arrival from Tirana, Albania 11 years ago. Petro Dhimitri’s painting depicts Playter Crescent, which is near Bayfield Street, an area of Broadview and Danforth avenues, which is part of the places the artist rides his bike. Dhimitri completed fine art college in

Tirana, and later graduated from the Tirana University as a teacher of Albanian language and literature. He worked as a journalist from 1962 until 1993 until he retired. At the same time, as an artist, was part of many national art shows. In 1995 he had a solo exhibition in Tirana. He is also a member of the Don Valley Art Club, as well as the Central Connection Art Club.

Winter solstice celebration set for Thorncliffe Park RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A new performance arts festival for Thorncliffe Park promises to bring together different cultural offerings in celebration of the season. The inaugural Winter Solstice Festival of Light runs this Friday and Saturday and will feature performances and activities, culminating with a Fire and Lantern Parade travelling from East York Town Centre to nearby R.V. Burgess Park. The event marks the end of a busy first year for main festival organizer Diasporic Genius, an arts engagement group which co-ordinated and participated in four community

All of the day-to-day stresses are highlighted,” said Adam Smith, director of mental health and developmental services, homelessness and housing help services at WoodGreen Community Services. Pressure to be perfect “There’s lots of pressure to be perfect.” Smith called the holidays a “season of extremes,” an emotional time when relationship and socioeconomic issues are often brought to light over a two- to three-week period. He also said it can be a time when it’s especially tough for those experiencing depression or anxiety to access counselling services. Smith urged those in need of someone to talk to or those who could benefit from some nonjudgmental advice on how to cope with this time of year to make use of WoodGreen’s free, drop-in counselling service, which runs Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m.

Buchbinder said participants in the lead-up to the festival are busy crafting their own lanterns with which to inscribe a symbol or picture related to their individual histories. “People tell personal stories of their lives and these lanterns will represent what they’ve gone through,” said Buchbinder. A “seven-minute feast” back at the

youth centre, located at 45 Overlea Blvd., following the parade will close the festival. Performers scheduled to appear include master storyteller Inger Lise Oelrich, Anne Barber of Shadowland Theatre, multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulhamid, bellydancer Roula Said, percussionist Jaash Singh, jazz musician RJ Satchithananthan and Buchbinder. The event is sponsored by the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office, the East York Town Centre and Shadowland Theatre. Anyone in need of a little extra help or support during this challenging time is more than welcome to come in and chat with one of the volunteer counsellors, all of whom have master’s degrees in counselling or social work. The east-end social service agency’s no-barrier, year-long program is at 815 Danforth Ave., Ste. 202, which is just west of Jones Avenue. “We’re here to help people. We have an understanding ear and we’ll help you set some goals and make positive changes,” he said, adding with a little advance notice translators can also be arranged for those who don’t have a strong command of the English language. Anyone interested in learning more about this local service should call the program’s coordinator, Sharna Cohen, at 416-645-6000, ext. 2512. Because of its long history in the city’s east end, Smith said WoodGreen can also provide people with information as well as referrals to other local social service agencies over the holidays. “You don’t have to be alone this holiday season. There are a lot of people who care and understand what you’re going through,” he said. “A network of support is there for you.”

To the editor: Re: ‘Mayor’s mandate must continue,’ Letters, Dec. 13. I find it most interesting that people like letter writer David C. Searle are pleased Mayor Rob Ford does not support unions. I gather the letter writer is not employed by a union, therefore unions are wrong. Years ago when men tried to unionize a company, they were often beaten for the attempt to do so. These brave men brought about wonderful changes for many of the workers. No more 60-hour weeks with poor pay. No more overtime with maybe $1 for supper money. It is not the unions that are causing the upset in today’s economy. If union jobs are wiped out, the letter writer would be surprised at the change back to the “good old days” of long hours and low wages – not only in union jobs. Joy Taylor

anta Claus was scheduled to make a special appearance at a mall near me last Saturday, so I decided to drop by to have a heart-to-heart with the big guy. I wasn’t the only one. When I got there I encountered the longest line-up I’ve seen since the opening of Star Trek 99: The Search For A Believable Hair Piece For Kirk. At the back was my neighbour’s daughter, Jasmine. I tucked in behind her and gave her a tap on the shoulder. Normally Jasmine breaks into a big smile when she sees me, but this time she frowned. “I hate to break it to you, Jamie, but you’re not allowed in this line,” she scolded. “Why not?” I asked. “You have to be little,” she said sternly. “But I’m five-foot-two. You always tell me how

short I am.” “I meant a little boy or a little girl,” she clarified. “Says who?” I cried. “Christmas 101.” “I never heard that carol,” I said skeptically. “It’s not a carol. It’s a rule.” (She pronounced it “ruwull.”) “The golden ru-wull,” I asked. “I don’t know what colour,” she replied resolutely. “But you better get out of line fast or somebody might call a security guard.” “What if I go to that face-painting booth next to his sleigh and get my face painted to look like a little boy or little girl?”

Jasmine scowled. “That’s the oldest trick in the book. Santa didn’t get to be Santa falling for that kind of stuff.” “But if I don’t stand in line, how am I going to sit on his lap?” I whimpered. “You can’t sit on Santa’s lap. You have to be little to do that, too, obviously.” “But I’m not much bigger than you are and judging by the speed at which kids grow these days, you’ll probably be taller than me by the time we get to Santa.” “Jamie, what part of little BOY or little GIRL don’t you understand?” “But if I don’t sit on his lap how will he know what I want for Christmas?” “You can’t ask Santa for stuff. Though it goes against my better judgment, I’ll ask Santa for a bone. But I’m gonna pretend it’s for me and I’m definitely not going to toss it to you until he’s looking the other way. I’ve got a tradition to uphold. Little kids all over this mall – and the world – are counting on me.”

Residents can learn how to Scottish Country Dance right here in East York. Scottish country dance is the traditional dance of Scotland. It’s based on ancient folk dances, mixed with elements of ballet, influences from the royal court of France, and some overlap with Highland dancing. This group dances jigs and reels and the distinctively Scottish Strathspey. This type of dancing is challenging mentally and physically. Dancers must be fit, and quick on the uptake. Council has never seen a year like this one T

here has never been a more interesting year in the history of amalgamated Toronto Council than 2012, and that’s saying something. Toronto, after all, has had some interesting times in its short history since megacity amalgamation took effect at the start of 1998. We’ve lived through epic corruption scandals, high comedy from goofball mayors, endless battles with the provincial and federal governments, riots and mass arrests, and stinky, stinky garbage strikes.

But 2012? You have outdone yourself, o waning year. The one interesting thing that didn’t happen this year was a garbage strike, and that’s something. But over the past 12 months, it has been a wild, reality-showworthy ride: Toronto has seen nothing less than a seismic shift of power and influence away from a mayor who was just two years ago elected with a very powerful mandate. Mayor Rob Ford’s fall from grace, such as it was, was a constant narrative through the

year – and not just because we scribes made it so. The year began on an optimistic note, as the mayor and his brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, started on what seemed like an easy, humanizing and healthful project, to drop a few pounds (well, 50) over six months. The mayor’s faltering diet and exercise regime would become an all-to-apt metaphor for his faltering control of council. In the early months of 2012, councillors took matters into their own hands. The 2012 budget was re-made on the floor of council, to the mayor’s chagrin. And council didn’t stop there, voting to kill Ford’s dream of a subway to Scarborough and restore the light rail transit plan

Stories of little heroes shared in special

Even before eight-year-old Lilah Petersiel was born, her parents knew the youngster was set to face a tough road. The Petersiels knew from ultrasounds she was going to have only one kidney, which would not necessarily cause problems, but on the day she was born, the Petersiels got some more bad news. “She had an ultrasound and when the G.P. read the results, he said ‘the kidney’s fine, but there’s something else here and it’s something I can’t treat here.’” said Lilah’s father, Eric

Petersiel. She was transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children and within two weeks she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma – an aggressive cancer most common among young children – and had surgery to remove a tumour from her adrenal gland. A few short months later, a routine CT scan showed she had early stage liver cancer and Lilah had to undergo additional surgery to remove part of the organ and eight months of chemotherapy. “We’re so thankful that we had SickKids to take care of our daughter and our family,” Petersiel said. “It was quite an ordeal, but we were incredibly lucky to have this institution in our community.” While Lilah has shown no evidence of cancer for years – the family celebrated her anniversary with no evidence of disease on Dec. 8 - the Petersiels have not forgotten the care she received while at SickKids. The Toronto family started Lilah’s Fund (www.lilahsfund.com), which has raised some $700,000 in funds to help neuroblastoma research. Money raised through Lilah’s Fund goes directly to SickKids to fuel research into childhood cancers. “It’s amazing to me that they have the world’s leading scientists and clinicians (at SickKids),” Petersiel said. “They are literally on the edge of breaking through and finding out so much more about the sources and cures for kids’ cancer.”

Petersiel said Lilah has had five friends die, whom she had met over the course of her treatment, and the family hopes Lilah’s Fund can help bring about the necessary breakthroughs. “If you look back, 30 years ago, the cure rates for leukemia were under 10 per cent and now they’re over 90 per cent,” Petersiel said. Lilah’s story will be told as part of a twohour special called Believing in Heroes, which outlines the stories of many of the children who have been treated at SickKids. The program takes an in-depth look at the difficulties many children face and how the care provided at the hospital helps them and their families during difficult times. Believing in Heroes will air on CTV from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.
