Students say thanks to Ray the crossing guard Mark A. cadiz mcadiz@insidetoronto.com More than 100 kids from Gledhill Junior Public School gathered last Friday to bid farewell to crossing guard Ray Monckton. Monckton, 60, is hanging up his safety vest much to the displeasure of the children who rely on him to get safely across Danforth Avenue. “Rain or shine he’s always out there saying hi to everybody,” said parent Jessica Schmiedchen. “He is a wonderful warm presence first thing in the morning. He’s like the neighbourhood Grandpa.” Suited up in a bright blue winter jacket and snow pants, Monckton is out three times a day at the busy intersection of Danforth and Gledhill Avenues making sure all the kids get to school safely. “Everybody knows me as Ray the crossing guard,” Monckton said. “I am going to miss this job because of the kids and parents, but one thing is for sure, I won’t be missing the weather.” It was a cold and windy morning as the children hiding on the north and south sides of the Danforth paraded toward him, holding thank you signs while the pop song

Happy by Pharell Williams blasted through the air. “My daughter goes to school here and Ray has been part of our community,” said parent Sam Kazak. “He’s the one that helps protect our kids from crossing the street back and forth for the last 10 years.” Over whelmed by the response, Monckton was all smiles as he was serenaded and handed parting gifts from the children. Classifying himself as “old school,” Monckton said he’s hardly missed day since he started on the job. “I listen to the radio every morning to see what I have to wear. As far as wearing the clothes, I have that down to a science,” he said. “I have over 15 sets of gloves and so many hats, it’s incredible” he said. Schmiedchen, who has two children, aged seven and 11, at Gledhill, said it’s going to be strange without Monckton watching over the young pedestrians. “I don’t think he knows how much he means to the kids. He’s a daily presence in the neighbourbood. We really do love him,” she said.

East York Seniors Christmas Dinner tradition continues Mark A. cadiz mcadiz@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of seniors are expected Christmas Day at the annual East York Seniors Christmas Dinner at the East York Civic Centre. The long-running East York tradition will serve up a massive Christmas feast with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, mixed vegetables, cranberry sauce and ample amounts of apple and cherry pie for the local seniors who attend. “This is my fifth year hosting and it’s important to keep up the community tradition,” Toronto-Danforth Councillor Mary Fragedakis said. “Also, it’s important for the seniors because they count on it.” The dinner has been an East York tradition for more

than 30 years, and tickets are distributed in advance. Started by former East York mayor David Johnson, the

first seniors Christmas dinner was served in 1982 and it has been celebrated ever since. “The dinner has been going

on for many years and it’s an important tradition for those who don’t have family or the means to have a Christmas dinner,” Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis said. Davis, who has been participating in the event the last 11 years, recognizes the importance of the East York tradition and sees it as an opportunity for residents to help those in need. For volunteers like Sandra Lougheed and her daughters it’s a Christmas tradition in the making; she plans to be back every year. “It’s nice to give back to the community during Christmas,” Lougheed said. “It is part of the Christmas spirit to help people out who might need it and appreciate a warm meal on Christmas Day.”

Behind the Christmas dinner there are the volunteers who spend hours spreading holiday cheer and ensuring the day runs smoothly. In a community where seniors are a prevalent demographic, the East York Seniors Christmas Dinner has become increasingly important for those who might find themselves spending the holidays alone. But it’s more than just a dinner; all the seniors receive gifts from the community, including larger items that are part of a draw. “Christmas becomes a difficult time of the year when family members are missing,” Fragedakis said. “It is nice to have a place where people can come together and enjoy everyone’s

company and have fun… I love being a part of it,” she said. Approximately 200 seniors are expected to attend the event at the East York Civic Centre between noon and 2 p.m. The dinner is back at the civic centre this year after having to be moved to East York Collegiate Institute at the last minute last year due to the ice storm that hit Toronto in late December and knocked out power to huge portions of the city. For info on volunteering or to make a donation to next year’s dinner, contact Fragedakis at councillor_ fragedakis@toronto.ca Donations to support the dinner can be sent to the East York Foundation, 50 Merritt Rd., M4B 3K6

column

A personal search for the Christmas spirt At this time of year I always begin my personal search for the Christmas spirit. It is an important thing for me because it is within the existence of everyday miracles that we are provided a glimpse into the larger picture of life. Each year we are confronted by the terrible things that people do to each other out of spite or wilful ignorance; people, who should know better, but seem to be unable to break out of the cycles they are trapped in. All too often these displays of thoughtlessness can make one lose heart about the human condition. Yet every year around this time, I find myself regaining that spark of faith in the potential that people can achieve, and this keeps me going for another year. It is always within the small events of life that I find renewal.

joe cooper watchdog It can be a glimpse of a street full of festively lit houses that passes me as I am driving to some destination in the night. Or it can be the sight of someone who is happy in having bought a present for a loved one. Sounds are important, too, such as the familiar ring of the Sally Ann bell and the warm “Thank You” as you put a donation in the pot. If you are lucky, each of these can cascade into other memories, like beads on a string, with one after the other representing a particular time or place where one connected with that sometimes elusive spirit of Christmas. I have no idea what the next year will bring to those around me or to myself.

All in all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the community of East York and Leaside a very Merry Christmas.

For myself, this past year was one of great change, with some parts being good, and others not so welcome. In all of this I have tried to maintain a balance in my views, and to keep digging for the truth, as I understand it to be, and to share my insights with my community. Certainly the ability to do this is one of the great gifts that one can be entrusted with, and for this I am very thankful. My only wish in the upcoming year is that I will be able to report more positive and happier events more frequently than during the past year. All in all, I would like to

take this opportunity to wish the community of East York and Leaside a very Merry Christmas. I say this in the spirit of all of the ways in which people observe their particular celebrations; may each and every one of you find your own particular spark of inspiration to see you through the up coming year. A particular thanks is also extended to all of those who work to make the community more than just a name, but a place to live and call home. Community leaders, volunteer, teachers and educators, civil servants, police and firefighters and our politicians; all who strive to represent our interests as well as they can deserve to be recognized today. Trying to parse the meaning of 2014 is only slightly less challenging than summarizing a Thomas Pynchon novel. But if not now, then when? So let me take a stab at it: 2014 was the year that Toronto realized it was not, in fact, a city. It was not, at least, the kind of city that we have always thought we were and the place we hoped we might remain: an idealized place where ethnic and economic divisions are not obstacles to consensus and harmony. We always knew this vision of Toronto might be a mirage. But in 2014, we stepped through the illusion and were faced with the undeniable evidence: on Oct. 27, only John Tory was able to exceed the support that remained with the Ford family, Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug. That Torontonians would elect Rob Ford mayor in 2010 might have been excused as a blip. Voters

david nickle the city either did not know or could not believe how unsuited Rob was for the city’s top job, and were likewise ignorant or incredulous of the fact that the picture Ford painted of the city’s problems and the solutions to those problems had so little to do with reality. But when four years later, with all of that amply and painfully demonstrated, many – about a third of those who voted – cast their vote with Doug Ford, there was no denying it. Toronto’s old idea of itself as a city no longer applies. Of course, that’s not to say we underwent dramatic change over 2014. Toronto’s “elite,” as the Fords describe them, have always been too enamoured of the shiny cultural artifacts of downtown. And the elites have always smugly boasted about Toronto’s multicultural

cred. It’s been tougher for the elites to recognize many of the people bringing those cultures and speaking those languages have gone to live in parts of the city that have been allowed to deteriorate, and since amalgamation in 1998 been farther from the decision-making centre of Toronto than ever before. The vote for the Fords came from many in those communities, despite the fact that the Fords offered nothing tangible there other than to articulate affection and camaraderie. That vote sustained over unprecedented scandal, in spite of lies against a backdrop of the illegal drug trade that is one of the most genuinely corrosive elements that a city can face. And that is what we’ve learned, more than anything, in 2014: the nature of our long, chronic injury. In 2015, here’s hoping we can learn how to heal it.

death, TTC CEO Andy Byford promised to speed up a review of vehicle operator training that had been initiated following multiple instances of bus drivers running red lights. On Dec. 15, a 40-year-old woman was struck by a TTC bus near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, and was transported to hospital as a precaution. Police are investigating.

Two years after changes were made to improve pedestrian safety where the Allen Expressway meets Lawrence Avenue West, the city councillor for the area admits there are still concerns. Eglinton-Lawrence incumbent Josh Colle says he’s asked the city’s transportation department to review the effectiveness of a signalized pedestrian crossing placed at the intersection, where impatient drivers exiting from Allen onto Lawrence often resort to “queue jumping” – swerving around stationary cars waiting to turn – leading to potential altercations with crossing pedestrians. SERVICE COMING TO GO TRANSIT wINCREASED

GO Transit riders can look forward to more bus and rail service in the new year. Right after the holidays, GO is promising more weekday service on the Milton train line, more bus trips for York University commuters headed to the University of Waterloo, and adjusted scheduling to improve travel times. Also, for a third straight year fares are going up. The increase takes effect in February.

BUS-PEDESTRIAN COLLISIONS probed Last Friday’s tragic TTC bus accident in Scarborough was the second such incident involving a pedestrian that week. Fourteen-year-old Amaria Diljohn was killed after she was struck by a TTC bus turning from Neilson Road onto Finch Avenue East. The driver later turned himself in, and the TTC says video footage downloaded from the bus will aid police investigations of the incident. Following Diljohn’s

Toy drive at East York Legion branch HOSPITAL HELPERS: Left, Sammy Cannarella adds gifts to the pile of toy donations during the Cabbagetown Club’s toy drive held recently at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 345 on Peard Road in East York. Toys collected went to benefit the Rouge Valley Health System’s children’s oncology unit. Right, Gaye Duggan arrives with a board game to donate. For some 60 years, collecting donations for those in need has been a tradition of the Cabbagetown Club, which is made up mostly of former residents. The tradition goes back to Tom Crewe Sr., who started the legend of The Cabbagetown Santa. The tradition is carried on by his family, with the annual dance that collects items for donation. Councillors will leave city hall to hear how residents across Toronto want their money spent – but only during two days in February. In one of its first moves, the city’s budget committee decided to send representatives to Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke for public meetings at civic centres. But the former cities of East York and York, where local councillors also wanted budget meetings, will have to wait. “We’re very limited in what we can do,” said Gary Crawford, a Scarborough councillor appointed the city’s budget chief this month. Crawford said he wanted committee members to fan out from city hall in order to reach more residents, an idea Mayor John Tory supports. But with only two days to hear from the public, hearing deputations in the four quarters of the city, including city hall, is a necessary compromise for 2015, he said. “It’s not going to be perfect this (coming) year. This at least moves us forward a bit,” Crawford said. On Feb. 2, one subcommittee under Crawford will be at Scarborough Civic Centre from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. onwards, while another with Etobicoke Councillor John Campbell, the budget vice-chairperson, will be in North York. The next day, the groups will host meetings during those same hours at city hall and the Etobicoke Civic Centre. East York councillors Janet Davis and Mary Fragedakis, with Frances Nunziata of York, made a pitch for subcommittees visiting their centres too. “It sends a message that parts of the city are important,” Davis said.

East York still has a council chamber, and it’s a place where people believe the city speaks to them and they speak to the city, she argued. Jim Karygiannis, a rookie Scarborough councillor, was unsympathetic. If a budget subcommittee is sent eastward it should go straight to Scarborough, which is home to “a hell of a lot” more people than East York, he said. Shelley Carroll, a former budget chief herself, warned against splitting the committee too thinly. “We’ve done this before, and it’s not ideal,” said the North York councillor, noting it would be impossible for either Crawford or city’s chief financial officer to be at all of the meetings if there were three each day. Council has decided to have a comprehensive consultation on city spending priorities for a budget review that will cover 2016, 2017 and 2018. But the coming year’s budget will be a rushed “post-election” affair in the early days of a new term, she said. Crawford agreed, promising more days for listening to the public in 2016. Glenn De Baeremaeker, a Scarborough councillor, said residents of the area find their civic centre “within striking distance” and are less inclined to go to city hall. But some Toronto citizens – downtown people, he called them – are so passionate about budget issues they will travel outside the core to crowd the speaking lists at the subcommittee meetings, warned De Baeremaeker. “They will come and push aside local citizens in North York and Scarborough.” Perhaps remembering marathon meetings on budget issues during the last council term, the committee approved a motion by Michelle Berardinetti of Scarborough limiting to one person each group or organization wishing to speak, and allowing that person to speak at just one regular budget committee meeting and one subcommittee meeting. This way, “at least we wouldn’t be hearing from (the same) residents at multiple subcommittees,” Berardinetti said. The committee hopes to finish its work the week of Feb. 20.
