Politicians East York skaters in synch set to host annual New Year’s levee RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The New Year’s levee is an event steeped in tradition and an East York city councillor wants it to stay that way.

On Sa t u rd a y, Ja n . 6 , elected officials from all levels of government representing Toronto-Danforth and Beaches-East York will exchange New Year’s greetings with residents.

Between 200 and 300 people are expected to turn up for the event, which goes from 1 to 3 p.m. at the East York Civic Centre, said Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis, who called the levee part of the “protocol” for ushering in the New Year.

“It’s kind of an old-fashioned event that’s been around for eons and it’s just a good chance to say hello,” said Davis. “There’s always a little refreshment and some music. It’s a pleasant way to bring in the New Year and to meet and extend greetings to our constituents.”

As well there will be education programs for hospital staff to ensure the optimal use of volunteers’ time and talents; and research by the BCRI to assess and develop a proof of concept of new roles for volunteer engagement.

WoodGreen’s Cringan named tenant award winner JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com East Toronto resident Leslie Cringan will be forever grateful to WoodGreen Community Services for providing her with a safe, secure and affordable place to live during a challenging time in her life.

“WoodGreen was there to offer me support and housing and they really gave me a hand up,” said Cringan, a Toronto native who has lived in Leslieville for the last four years.

“I really wanted to give back what was so freely given to me.”

Over the past four years, Cringan has given of her time to better her community.

Starting off small, she partnered with a fellow tenant in her WoodGreen housing complex to create a safe and secure committee.

“From there other committees grew,” Cringan said.

In recent years, she’s helped plan Neighbours Night Out

events and has organized monthly eat ‘n’ greet dinners for her fellow tenants among countless other things.

She tries to help out where she can as both a WoodGreen tenant and a member of the Leslieville community and said she is excited when others are inspired by her work. ”When you get the spark going, it really grows. Each year the involvement grows with the neighbours and fellow tenants,” said Cringan, who is now studying at George Brown College with the goal of completing the assaulted women and children’s program and community engagement program. “Because of volunteering in the community, many doors have opened. Community has always been very important to me.”

Recently, Cringan received a Te n a n t A c h i e v e m e n t Recognition Award from the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association (ONPHA), the voice of non-profit housing in Ontario, for her commitment

to tenant leadership.

She learned of her win in late June.

“I was quite honoured. When I was nominated I really didn’t expect to win this award,” said Cringan, crediting the staff at WoodGreen for their ongoing support and encouragement. part of a team “I feel I’m part of a team. For me, there’s a job that needs to be done and I just sort of do it. It’s truly an honour to have won this award.”

Angela Cook, vice-president of housing and facilities for the east-end social service agency, said Cringan is more than deserving of the honour.

“She’s an extremely committed individual who likes to participate in the community and try to improve the living environment for not only herself, but also for her fellow resident,” said Cook, calling Cringan a great example for other tenants. “We actively

encourage our residents to volunteer and participate in the communities in which they reside. We’re extremely proud of the work Leslie is doing and this award is a nice way to recognize that.”

Cook said the honour is especially meaningful as WoodGreen, which nominated Cringan for the award, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

“Volunteering is an integral part of what we’re all about and Leslie is a great reflection of that. We’d like to congratulate and thank Leslie for all the hard work in the community,” she said.

John Wilson, an ONPHA spokesperson, said Cringan is an ideal recipient. “Leslie was selected for this award because of her hard work building and strengthening relationships,” he wrote in a recent email.

ow that the rush toward Christmas Day has passed, we’re hoping our readers can take some time over the next few days to enjoy their community with family and friends.

For many, that enjoyment means hitting the stores today and over the next few days for the sales that come with Boxing Day. Have a great time and we hope you find some bargains.

Traffic is lighter on the roads, it’s easier to get around and there’s lots of events scheduled over the holidays – many of them with a family focus.

In East York, a visit to Todmorden Mills will give the family a glimpse back to how the holidays were spent in the Regency era of the late 1700s and early 1800s, a time before Canada was even a country. The neighbouring Papermill Gallery features information about the War of 1812.

The holidays are the traditional time for high-level hockey tournaments in Toronto including the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic, which brings in some of North America’s top teams from bantam through midget. To the editor: The appeal of Mayor Rob Ford to be heard in January is unlikely to change the trial verdict against him.

Under mandatory sentencing laws brought to us all by the Prime Minister Stephen Harper government, judges have no latitude to modify sentences.

If the appeal fails, council will have to choose between appointing a replacement or calling a byelection.

Appointment of a moderate, neutral person who would nevertheless move matters forward would be, by far, the better option. The problem might be finding someone willing to accept the appointment.

A byelection would be a big disruption and could result in a partisan mayor and a continuation of squabbles when we need calm decisionmaking. A neutral appointee will not please everyone, but will not arouse the deep antagonisms that a partisan one would.

Discover winter’s wonders in your community

I

am always a bit amused when I hear people say that the lack of snow we have been having makes it difficult for them to get into the Christmas spirit.

Certainly, I would much prefer to walk out into a winter wonderland rather than the rain that we have been having, but snow is not the only thing that makes the season special.

Despite the fact that the days are short, the nights are long and the weather cold, I have always found the time around Christmas to be filled with a special energy.

Winter is still new and despite having watched the change of the seasons for many decades it is always fascinating to watch the changes that take place in nature.

I don’t see winter as being the end of a cycle, but rather as the beginning.

It is a moment of rest that

allows the great engine of life to prepare for the warm days of spring.

If you go out into nature by walking in the many parks that are found in our community, or even look in your own backyard, you will still see a lot of activity on the part of birds and those animals that remain active at this time of year.

Like I was saying earlier, it would be nice if the snow were on the ground to make everything look white, clean and frosty.

Last year there were some special moments when the fresh snow came and transformed parts of the Don Valley into a very

magical place that was a delight to explore.

Still, there is much that one can do to build up that sense of holiday spirit without having the white stuff to inspire us. Thanks to a lot of hard work and imagination on the part of our neighbours there is an excellent display of Christmas lights this year.

Rather than rushing through the streets of our community, take some time to actually enjoy the magical spell that is created by the colour and warmth of the lights. Likewise, try some random acts of kindness to get yourself into the spirit.

Go out with a roll of quarters (or loonies if you can afford it) in your pocket and try and find as many charity boxes as you can to donate at your local merchant’s front counter.

While you are doing that, wish the merchant and

their staff the best of the season and tell them how much you appreciate their service through out the year.

Try to think of someone you have not talked to for a long time and then call them up. Take a little time and do one or more of these suggestions and soon you will feel the warmth and happiness of the season. It is there for all to enjoy, no matter what your background or belief.

No mater what your circumstance in life, may each of you find true joy and happiness through the simple act of sharing good feelings with friends, family and loved ones during the holiday week. n Joe Cooper is a longtime East York resident and community activist. His column appears weekly.

The new group includes a community relations team to speak with local residents on construction projects; a communications team to provide general information of plans in plain language and through the use of infographics; and a third party to intervene in matters regarding property permits, approvals and expropriations.

Pace also said the TTC will do a better job in the future of informing the public of construction impacts for future work and thank residents for their patience during long construction periods, which are expected increase substantially over the next five years.

But local resident Lisa Dymond isn’t so sure the policy will lead to improvements.

Dymond’s home at 7 Strathmore Blvd. was one of two properties near Donlands station the TTC sought to tear down to build an additional exit.

In 2011, she and a group of residents approached the city ombudsman to investigate the TTC’s conduct.

Seeking action, not words She said the ombudsman’s findings vindicated her concerns about the process and she remained skeptical the TTC will change its ways given funding for the Second Exits plan was restored earlier this year.

“After what we’ve been through, we seek actions, not words,” she told the board.

Toronto-Danforth Councillor Mary Fragedakis said she was pleased with the new policy and urged the board to take its recommendations seriously.

“We need to continuously improve our public consultations processes if we’re going to build the city we want,” said Fragedakis.

She said she personally witnessed the disastrous consultations on the Second Exits plan in her ward.

TTC commissioner Glenn De Baeremaeker said he was personally embarrassed by the ombudsman’s findings.

“We betrayed the public and we betrayed ourselves,” he said.

In the report, Crean outlined seven recommendations, including a protocol for consulting with property owners about construction plans.

Following the release of the report, she expressed outrage for the “abysmal” way the TTC handled the consults, which were held just two weeks before a meeting to approve the final location sites.

“I would rank this as an eight out of 10 for severity,” said Crean. “But I don’t take issue with the TTC, just their communication process.”

Councillor calls for privatization of Gardiner DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s budget committee has asked for reports on the pros and cons of selling or leasing the Gardiner Expressway rather than trying to manage and repair the crumbling elevated highway using taxpayers’ money alone.

The city is looking at spending more than half a billion dollars to rehabilitate the highway after engineering studies indicated it is nearing the end of its useful lifespan, and will only be safe to drive on for

the next six years.

The motion to look at privatizing the highway came from an unlikely source: Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan, a leftof-centre critic of Mayor Rob Ford who is contemplating a run for the mayoralty himself.

‘I want to assure Torontonians: we are going to fix whatever needs to be fixed on the Gardiner.

I don’t view it as good money after bad money, because the Gardiner is the only structure we have.

We have to do what we have to do.’

Casino consultation meetings planned The City of Toronto will be taking the question of whether there should be a casino built in city limits to a number of neighbourhood meetings in January.

The city-wide consultation will take the form of a series of community open houses, as well as an interactive website.

The consultation will allow input on several questions that council will be facing later in the winter when it decides whether to welcome a

casino resort to the city: should there by a casino in Toronto at all? If so, where would be the best location?

What else should council consider in making its decision?

Leasing option “If those were offloaded to private hands, it could strangle decisionmaking for the city for decades. It would affect our ability to structure a regional transit system, it would strangle us in planning and building.”

Pasternak said leasing might be an option, something that others, including Etobicoke North

Budget Chair Mike Del Grande said the issue ultimately needed to go to council.

“The whole issue of the Gardiner should take place at full council,” he said.

“It needs a full whatever... dragit-out discussion.”

Del Grande said any discussion on the future of the Gardiner shouldn’t pre-empt the necessary repair work going forward now.

“I want to assure Torontonians: we are going to fix whatever needs to be fixed on the Gardiner,” Del Grande said.

“I don’t view it as good money after bad money, because the Gardiner is the only structure we have. We have to do what we have to do.”
