International Snowy skate honour for Burgess Park Thorncliffe’s R.V. Burgess Park has become the first park outside the United States to be honoured with recognition as a Frontline Park by an American advocacy group. The honour was bestowed by City Parks Alliance, an urban park advocacy organization. Burgess was nominated for the designation by Toronto Park People. In 2008, Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division partnered with the Thorncliffe Park Women’s Committee to bring playground equipment back into the park. Since then, the park has become a social and cultural meeting place for the Thorncliffe Park community. R.V. Burgess Park has undergone several enhancements over the past few years, including a community garden, new landscape features, additional pathways, a splash pad renovation and space for community-run events. Don Valley West Councillor John Parker said the partnership between the city and the Thorncliffe Park Women’s Committee is one that has benefitted the entire community. “We are proud of the relationship we formed with members of the Thorncliffe Park community,” said Parker. “This partnership is an example for other community groups wanting to fundraise and revitalize their parks.”

Meetings on future LRT, Eglinton Avenue plans hosted by city The city is holding three workshops this month on the future of Eglinton Avenue. Part of the ongoing Eglinton Connects planning study, the
workshops will focus on three main themes: making the avenue vibrant and attractive; encouraging mixed use and mid-rise development; and examining how the street will serve
the needs of residents when the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown light rail transit line is completed in about seven years. Each session goes from 5:30 to 9
p.m. with presentations beginning at 6:30 p.m. Locally, residents with concerns about the Eglinton LRT line through Leaside and where stops will be
located, can attend the Feb. 26 East Workshop at the Noor Cultural Centre, 123 Wynford Dr. For more info, visit www.toronto. ca/eglinton

Argos Huddle Up against bullying in East York Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com Members of the Toronto Argonauts stopped by East York Collegiate Institute recently to talk with students about bullying, and how to deal with it. Offensive guard Joe Eppele and Jason Colero, director of The Argos Foundation and education programs, spoke to the school’s Grade 9 and 10 students, sharing their experiences with bullying as part of the Argonauts Huddle Up Bullying Prevention program. Helping enforce the message, five of the school’s Grade 12 students, the Huddle Up committee, also spoke about how to safely handle bullying. As well as talking about being both bullied and a bully at times during his youth, Eppele shared with the students how he almost lost his brother, after his brother took an overdose of pills to escape the pain of being bullied. The powerful speech, during which Eppele had to stop once to compose himself, seemed to hit home with the students. Grade 9 student Hanna Girndt admitted the speech brought her to tears. “It was very moving,” she said, adding hearing Eppele and Colero’s stories showed bullying can happen to anyone, and can be overcome. “They’re both from the Toronto Argonauts, and they have sort of the same story, so I thought that was cool, and it shows how bullying is
The Argos Foundation and education programs director Jason Colero, far left, and Toronto Argonaut Joe Eppele met with members of the East York Collegiate Huddle Up anti-bullying committee including Jovana Simonovic, left, Tatjana Jagodic, Alisha Hobson, Draya Brewer and Dimitra Roussakis during a recent visit to the school.
more common than people think it is. I think a lot of people might be going through this, even though they don’t show it.” The event’s message was loud and clear, when you see bullying, don’t stand by, stand up. “Everybody knows when somebody’s being bullied, they just choose
to not see it,” Colero said. “It’s happening to people as we speak, so don’t sit there and hope that they get help, be the one who gets them the help, be the one that speaks up.” The presenters did not sugar coat their message, using harsh realities to explain the effects of bullying,
which Eppele noted is a much larger issue now, due to the Internet. “Before you could escape from it. Whereas now, social media is such a large part of your life, once someone goes on and starts bullying and taking over that aspect of your life, it’s something you’ll never escape. There’s no turn-off point,” he said.
“I definitely think it’s caused the problem to increase in severity.” During the presentation, the Huddle Up committee engaged students with an interactive skit, where an actress planted in the crowd bullied another actress on stage as if trying to start a fight. The skit showed different ways of handling the situation, both productive and non-productive, asking students to raise their hands if they had witnessed the scenarios. While most admitted seeing bullying end in physical abuse, only a scarce few, less than 10 students, admitted they had witnessed a similar situation end without violence. Alisha Hobson, committee chair, was pleased with students’ reaction to the presentation. “I know we’re not going to reach everyone, but I really hope we reached out to a couple of people, and to a couple of victims and bullies,” she said, before giving advice for victims of bullying. “Reach out, as hard as it is to reach out, you’ve just got to tell someone that you trust,” she said. “You can’t just let it all ball up inside.” Eppele shared the same message. “Don’t be afraid to get help. You’re not the only one who’s gone through it, and you won’t be the last, and suffering in silence only compounds the issue. It’s not something that should be faced alone.” For bullying information and help, visit www.kidshelpphone.ca or call 1-800-668-6868. Former Monarch Park principal named among nation’s best TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The office of Riverdale resident Rob MacKinnon doesn’t scream principal. His office accoutrements sets it – and it could be argued MacKinnon and his leadership style – apart. Large portraits in oil or charcoal leap off the walls, all but one a gift from his students at Etobicoke School of the Arts. A second open door off the school’s foyer and a large couch and
seating area invite students to drop in. Many do. Last week, The Learning Partnership named MacKinnon, a former principal of Monarch Park Collegiate in the east end, as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals. He is one of eight Toronto principals, seven from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), to receive the honour this year. “Everyone wants to come to school happy. Even in the darkest, most difficult times, students need to remember that we’re here to help
them get back to that (happy) place,” MacKinnon said of his teenage students. “It’s reminding them we speak to them with respect, treat them with respect...The greatest impact you have on kids is when they know they can come to us, trust us. “In my first-year assembly, I told students ‘every person in this building is here to help you; use us.’ “It’s telling them, ‘you can stay here’ (after school). We open the gym. Kids need to feel safe and welcome to come to school every day.
“Hopefully, they leave here full of confidence and we hear back from them after they leave that they’re living happy lives.” This year’s 51 winning principals receive their award on Feb. 26 at a gala dinner in Toronto. Later this month, the principals will also participate in a five-day executive leadership training program at the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management. This is MacKinnon’s ninth year as a principal, his third year at ESA. At Monarch Park Collegiate,
during his six-year stint, the school climbed dramatically in the Fraser Institute’s Secondary School Report Card from near bottom at 609 to 268. He cited the academic turnaround to the introduction of the International Baccalaureate program at the school as well as bringing in a new dome over its sports field which opened at this school year. His teaching philosophy: “get out of the way” and let the teachers pursue their passion and share it with their students.

Talks on transit to benefit future riders
A
s Toronto’s Feeling Congested? campaign shifts into its next stage, Torontonians eager to see an improved transit system throughout the city and its surrounding regions must understand the size and complexity of the challenge. To be blunt, the process of enabling criticallyneeded transit improvements is going to get harder as the process advances. Having the public give feedback and direction – which happened earlier this month – is a critical component to this process. That meaningful methods of paying for transit infrastructure were at the heart of these consultations is important. Community members must understand that we will only get the transit we are willing to pay for. But ultimately it will be the leaders we elect who will be entrusted with the potentially difficult decisions that will get shovels in the ground. These leaders may be in a position where they have to weigh what’s best for a community versus what’s politically expedi- our view ent. Feeling But that’s one of the reasons why the public feedback part is Congested so important – that we articulate what it is we want and that we to host panel are willing to pay for it. It is also important to keep discussions that momentum going. Early next month, the Feeling Congested? campaign is hosting a series of discussion panels. The first features Toronto’s chief planner, Jennifer Keesmaat, former Vancouver co-director of planning Larry Beasley, president and CEO of Toronto Board of Trade Carol Wilding, along with councillors Peter Milczyn (planning and growth committee chair) and Michael Thompson (economic development committee chair). It takes place Monday, March 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jane Mallett Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. It’s vital to get involved now any way you can. While this focus on transportation is looking not only at the needs of today, but also those decades from now, some big things are happening in the coming months. Last week we heard Metrolinx chair Robert Prichard say a special board meeting is being planned for May 27 where the investment strategy to pay for $34 billion worth of projects will be released. These projects include the eastern portion of a downtown relief subway line. The realization of some of these projects may be decades away, but the potential decisions putting them in motion are fast approaching. We need to be ready. newsroom

To the editor: I would encourage every taxpayer to get involved with the city-sponsored Feeling Congested campaign that is asking for public input on the future of transit in Toronto. We must speak up to make sure that special interest groups and lobbyists do not deflect the burden entirely on to the lowly citizen taxpayer. Let’s make sure that all those with interests in the city pay their full share. Torontonians have always been paying for transit. Not only with our property tax increases, but every time we use the transit system. It is now the turn of the 905 area residents who get to use our public facilities for free to step up and be counted. Currently, the only way this can be achieved is through provincial taxation and adequate funding for the TTC. Chris Belfontaine
Solutions to violence must come from community
W
ith the tragic shooting of four young people in a short period of time there has been renewed discussion on the topic of “Gangs and Guns” in Toronto . For some people it is the defining issue of the day, while for others it’s only one symptom of many problems that we are facing. Unfortunately, rather than trying to reach common ground too many people are trying to push their particular political philosophy forward as the one most likely to solve the problem. What I am concerned about is the growing polarization of ideas that has developed over the past few years as different groups react rather than respond to the real problem of weapon-based violence in the city. Some favour an approach that emphasizes the vigorous enforcement
watchdog
Joe Cooper
of the law, while others promote one that focuses upon the prevention of crime. Both approaches have their merits and no question that one can point to various examples and studies that will support either. However, putting too much energy into one or the other is simply going to keep us from achieving any real success in the long run. Given the complex mix of economics, culture and politics that have come to create the problem, we are going to have to first learn how to talk together if we are going to develop any real solutions.
More importantly, we are going to have to begin encouraging new voices to become part of the discussion about these problems and their solutions. The truth is the population that was once Metro Toronto has now completely changed, becoming one of the most diverse in the world. The problem is we have not learned how to speak to each other within that new diversity and as a result too many are being left out of this all too important discussion. Really, what is it that we are trying to achieve? Are we simply trying to regain the safety and security for those who have always been privileged to have it? Or are we trying to attain a common goal that will see all of the people in the city safe and secure? So rather than trying to make political points about
who’s philosophy is right or wrong, we should be setting out on a mission to use all of the tools available to us. More importantly, in setting out this mission we need to ensure all groups in the city feel included in the solution to this terrible problem of violence. That approach is going to have to be developed by all the people of Toronto as part of our collective culture and values. If it does not come into being then we are looking at a future where nothing happens because we are stuck in a “them and us” mentality. So the real solution to the “gangs and guns” crisis is not in the hands of the police or the politicians, but within our own. n Joe Cooper is a longtime East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday in The Mirror.

Snuggling corner remembers Stella Bruner-Methven Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com
A
local child is being remembered through a recently unveiled memorial at East End Children’s Centre. At three-and-a-half years old, Stella Bruner-Methven died in October of last year of a brain tumour. Throughout her short life, she spent lots of time at East End Children’s Centre, even celebrating her first birthday there. A memorial was created in Stella’s honour at the centre’s Kimbourne location, featuring a sofa donated by her family and friends. The memorial, Stella’s Snuggling Corner, was unveiled earlier this month. During the celebration, guests sang Stella’s favourite songs before having cupcakes, Stella’s favourite treat. At Stella’s Snuggling Corner, a bright blue sofa sits under a plaque honouring Stella and her life. The sofa holds significance for Stella and her family, explained Cathy Wright, manager of the centre. “It was always their family’s sofa that they kind of retreated to during Stella’s illness, on days that she was very, very sick, or days that they weren’t able to go out,” she said. “They were great at maintaining some great routines around getting out and getting involved, even while she was sick... but often they were at home, and it was always on their sofa that they kind of gathered together, and played, and had tea parties, and read books, and napped and snuggled.” A photo of Stella also adorns the corner, as well as stars. “We also hung some stars in the area, because Stella means star,” Wright said, adding stars are

being used to remember Stella in another way as well. “They’ve got these Stella Stars,” she explained. “It’s got a ribbon on it, and the idea behind the Stella Stars, it says Stella on one side, and on the other side it says www.stellastars. ca. The idea is that you can take your Stella Star and go, and leave it somewhere in the world... and someone will pick it up and hopefully go to the website.” The website shows a map of
the world, marked with stars. By clicking on the stars, people can see photos and stories of Stella Stars left on all of Earth’s continents, except Antarctica – the only place Stella’s memory has yet to travel. Stella’s Snuggling Corner also has a bean bag chair in it, that was donated to the centre by another community member. “It was just really an area where we encouraged reading before, so we’re still encouraging reading,

GTA realtors release midmonth resale housing figures Greater Toronto Area realtors reported 2,823 sales through the TorontoMLS system during the first 14 days of February. This result represented a decline of 8.3 per cent compared to the same period in 2012. “The number of transactions was lower for most home types in comparison to last year, but so too was the number of new listings. This means that market conditions remained quite tight, especially for low-rise home types. The result was continued price growth over last year,” says Toronto Real Estate Board President Ann Hannah. The average selling price for TorontoMLS transactions in the first half of February was $509,061 – up by four per cent in comparison to the same time last year. “The annual rate of price growth so far in February has been in line with expectations for 2013,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager
of Market Analysis. “The average selling price in the GTA will continue to grow this year but at a slower pace compared to 2012. The basis of this price growth will be the low-rise segment of the market, for which months of inventory and therefore choice for buyers remains very low.” – TREB

Shaving land transfer tax a fight
B
arring anymore run-ins with the law, it looks as though Mayor Rob Ford has at least one serious fight ahead of him as he attends to the last two years of his term: the land transfer tax. The mayor has made it clear he would like very much to shave 10 per cent off the tax on real estate transactions. The plan is a dilution of his 2010 election promise to scrap the tax entirely – something even the tax-cutting Ford soon realized would be financially impossible. The tax brings in in the neighbourhood of $350 million a year, and since Ford’s predecessor David Miller introduced it, has become a crucial element in balancing the budget. The 10 per cent cut, on the other hand, is a battle the mayor might conceivably win. Held against budgets that run in the neighbourhood of $10 billion, $35 million can exist in a margin of error – and such a cut would just be added into the other pressures the city’s budget com-

mittee and council have to deal with each year. The real battle will be convincing council to support adding that $35 million to the tally. Ford’s former budget chief Mike Del Grande, as staunch a fiscal conservative as the mayor in most respects, was deeply skeptical about the plan. His replacement, Frank Di Giorgio, is comparatively cheerful at the prospect of at least looking. But he’s unwilling to make any cut to the tax without finding some offsetting revenue. And the rest of council? Over the past three budgets, council as a whole has been unwilling to follow the mayor and his agenda too far down the road to privation. With an election coming up, will 23 councillors jump
onto the land transfer tax bandwagon as readily as they did in 2010, when they supported the freshlyelected mayor’s plan to scrap the vehicle registration tax? There’s very little percentage that they will do so. Unlike the vehicle registration tax, which all car-driving voters had to pay every year they continued to own a car, the land transfer tax is relatively invisible. Property-holding Torontonians pay it every time they move house. Given that, shaving 10 per cent off in the 2014 budget will take an enormous amount of political capital from the mayor’s office – more than David Miller used to get it installed in the first place. It may take all that Ford has at this point in his mandate. It will likely take even more. n David Nickle The Mirror’s city hall columnist. His column appears every Thursday. MY MEDICINE is my hope My name is Maureen Smith I’m 53 years old I’m from Ottawa and I live with a rare hormonal disorder
I was born with an extremely rare disorder which means I have zero growth hormone. As a child, I received medication to keep my condition in check but there was no treatment for adults with this disorder, so for 20 years my health deteriorated drastically. By sheer willpower and a lot of luck, I found a clinical trial for a new drug – my life was changed. I can’t describe the exhilaration of taking a medicine that literally turns your despair into hope. I’m healthier today than I was at 25, and I am so grateful for the medicine that keeps me alive. www.canadapharma.org/hope

Police are investigating a sexual assault in the Floyd and Pape avenues area. Police said a 41-year-old woman was walking in the area between 9:45 and 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 14 when she was approached by a man and sexually assaulted. The man is described as white, 47 to 50 years old, 5’4 to 5’6 with a stocky build, a
grey/white moustache and grey receding hair. He was wearing thick-lensed glasses, khaki pants, a light coloured spring/fall jacket and held a dark coloured cane in his right hand. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416808-7474 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-2228477.
n Man charged
Toronto police have arrested a 30-year-old man and charged him with the robberies of five banks along Danforth Avenue and one in Eglinton Square Shopping Centre. The robberies all occurred between the previous Friday, Feb. 1 and Monday, Feb. 4. Police had described each robbery as the work of one
man who fled with some cash. A bank on the Danforth was robbed on Feb. 1, three were
robbed the next day and one on Feb. 4, police said. In each case, the suspect allegedly approached
employees with a note and demanded cash. Scott Critch, 30, is facing six robbery charges.

a Say Yes to the Dress atmosphere. We make it really feel like a store.” Donations should be addressed to Nita. For drop-off hours and information, visit www.newcircles.ca

Do you know about Diners Club? Diners Club is: • A lunch program for seniors that includes transportation and escort service. • An opportunity for seniors to socialize together and make new friends while sharing a meal. • A really good value! Fees are between $7.00 and $8.00, including transportation. • Not a Club, despite its name! You don’t have to join anything. • Offered nine times every month at nine different locations. There is bound to be
one that appeals to you. Clients can choose the locations they want to attend from a monthly calender, and enjoy regular or occasional social events with people just like them. This lunch program is offered by East York Meals on Wheels. They’re a not-forprofit, community-based agency providing high quality, low cost services for senior, disabled, convalescing and chronically ill residents of the East York community. They help people maintain their independence and improve their quality of life. Meals are professionally prepared, and
the services are accessible and friendly. They provide excellent service to people of all income levels at an affordable price. East York Meals on Wheels has been serving the East York community since 1969. They have a professional, caring staff and are committed to providing flexible, personal and responsive services in a timely manner. When you call their office, you will be pleased to find that the phone is always answered by a real person! Find out how you can take advantage of all they have to offer, or for information on volunteering, please call 416-424-3322.
