World Cup run ends for Greek soccer fans on Danforth Avenue

SO CLOSE: Fans react to the game action on Danforth Avenue while watching Greece play Coasta Rica during a World Cup Round-of-16 match in Brazil on Sunday. Costa Rica went on to win the game and eliminate Greece from contention. Advancing out of group play and into the Round of 16 was the furthest Greece has ever gone in the World Cup. The loss to Costa Rica was a tough one for Greek fans who had jammed bars, restaurants and cafes along Danforth Avenue to catch the game as Greece lost the match in penalty kicks. There are now eight teams left in the World Cup and quarterfinal play begins this Friday. Ford wrong to play favourites with media

W

ith Mayor Rob Ford’s return to civic politics after a stay in a rehabilitation facility, we would expect to see some lessons learned and some new attitudes heading into October’s civic election. Ford has been a controversial figure at best of times, with as colourful a political persona as his private one. It’s all made for curiously divisive leadership for this large, world-class city. But when he begins to hold press conferences, picking and choosing whom he invites from the accredited city hall media gallery, we’re not quite sure he’s learned much during his time away. Surely all news organizations deserve a place at the mayor’s table. Metroland Media Toronto puts close to 500,000 newspapers on Toronto doorsteps every Thursday, with nine newspapers, including The East York Mirror. Then there’s our www.insidetoronto.com website. And we haven’t even mentioned the 100plus other Metroland newspapers in the province posting our view the stories we tell on their own Mayor exludes websites. That’s not a bad household citizens when he reach and larger than the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, picks favourites Toronto Sun and National Post distribution combined on that day of the week. But it wasn’t enough to avoid exclusion from the mayor’s first meeting after rehabilitation earlier this week, along with The Canadian Press and NOW magazine and others. We expect that sitting politicians and hopeful candidates understand that people receive their news and information in a varied number of ways. When you play favourites with the media, you shut the door to opportunity to reach citizens who voted you into office. We really don’t get the point. Surely he might have learned that through his trials and tribulations with the Toronto Star. We sincerely hope Ford’s time in rehabilitation facilities has helped combat his personal issues. Given his comments when returning to Toronto on Monday, he would like you to believe that, too. We’d love to spend the months leading to the next civic election talking about policy and performance and not abuses. But being exclusionary to some media members continued a bad pattern of his prerehab practises and doesn’t create confidence in Ford having changed his practises. The mayor has a chance to hit a reset button. We’re not convinced he is prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

Biking in the East York Canada Day Parade

I

f there is one event that really stands out as a real East York institution, it’s the East York Canada Day Parade. It all started back in 1957 when True Davidson came up with the idea for the celebration and at the time everyone thought it was a bad idea. Well, True again proved the critics wrong. While it was a small affair held on the lawn of the East York Board of Education offices on Cosburn Avenue — it was successful enough to be continued. So from there it grew and then someone suggested that there should be a parade. Today, that parade is the centre piece for the entire event. Thanks to True Davidson’s genius of local organization and commonsense management, the event was completely managed by the community. As a result, it has always been

joe cooper watchdog a true East York institution, completely run by local volunteers and community groups. This year, thanks to the hard work of the community volunteer group Ward 29 Bikes I was able to participate in the parade. At 8:30 a.m. I joined an excited group of cyclists who, thanks to the bike group, were able to festoon our bikes in Canadian flags and red and white bunting. Despite the gathering dark clouds in the west, everyone was excited and ready to roll when then grand marshal blew his whistle. So off we went, bells ringing, and performing some impromptu precision driving in circles as we made our way along the route. What a tremendous feeling it was to be part of

the excitement and show off our patriotism and cycling skills at the same time. Then the heavens opened up and the rain poured down, but that didn’t dampen our spirits, nor those watching along the route. Soaked as we were, we just kept on riding and waving to the crowds while putting on a display of our riding skill. It was a delight to see the smiling faces of children and adults as we made our way along the route. As we rode past, it was a delight to see so many Canadian flags waving and people shouting: Happy Canada Day!’. I definitely felt a spirit of community in the enthusiasm of both the people marching and riding in the parade, as well as those waving and cheering along the route. It was truly an East York moment once again, show-

ing that we’re more than just a name on the map, but a true community with deep roots and a strong spirit. True Davidson would definitely have been pleased to see how her “little idea” has come to define us. It was with regret that our portion of the parade ended and our group of cyclists headed off to respectfully remove our Canadian flags and other decorations. Ward 29 Bikes will continue to advocate for safe cycling in the ward as well as work with other cycling groups to make Toronto a safer place for bicycle use. If you want to know more about this group and the good work they do, visit http://29bikes.ca Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. East York soccer girls win Robbie tournament championship CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ACTION: The East York Blue Devils under16 girls soccer team won the championship of Scarborough’s prestigious Robbie International Soccer Tournament this week. The East York girls took the title with a 3-0 win over the Chinook United team of Calgary, Alberta in the championship match on Monday afternoon in Birchmount Stadium. Goal scorers for East York were Kaelyn Johnson, with a pair, and Zoe Docouto. The shutout for the Blue Devils was earned by goalie Yasmeen Jamieson. The championship game victory sealed what had been a perfect Robbie tournament for the Blue Devils, who did not allow a goal against in all five matches they played. Ford has to address personal record

t’s hard to know what to make of Rob Ford’s return to office. In the speech that he gave in front of a few reporters, Ford started off seeming quite contrite. He spoke of his enlightening experiences in the GreeneStone rehabilitation centre — that he overcame his own penchant for denial and understood that his addictions to drugs and alcohol are a disease that will require constant, diligent treatment. He pledged to keep clear of dangerous and unhealthy associations that have supported his addictions. He even apologized – to Torontonians and city councillors (especially mayoral candidate Karen Stintz) over remarks he made. And he acknowledged that he is not asking for forgiveness. That was a pretty good first couple of steps on a road heading toward redemption. But as the speech finished up, it was as though he stepped up onto the sidewalk, crossed a parking lot and disappeared down an alley.

david nickle the city It became fast clear that Ford’s speech was an election speech. He spoke of his accomplishments, both real and simply claimed: how the mayor stopped the gravy train, saved money contracting out garbage and saved public anxiety by making the TTC an essential service. A few breaths after saying he was not asking for forgiveness, he announced his intentions to ask for another mandate, and said he hoped to continue to be mayor for many, many years. And when faced with a barrage of the many questions that still hang over his mayoralty, he packed up his papers and walked off, answering not one of them. Now, to be fair, the mayor’s office and his brother Doug Ford had indicated for some time that the mayor would take no questions. But a spontaneous answer or two might have

gone some way to clearing away the stink of a selfsatisfied stump speech that hung in the mayor’s wake. Given that he didn’t, the mayor might have spent the time talking about those hundreds of millions of dollars he’s saved taxpayers answering some of the questions that he might have anticipated, and apologizing more specifically for his racial, homophobic and sexist slurs. He might have apologized to the city staff that he’s on record as having abused. He might have apologized to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair. He might have explained himself, in terms other than those that seem drawn from the pages of a recovery self-help book as much as they were from true epiphany. The reality is that Rob Ford is a long way from being able to boast about a political record, without first addressing the serious deficit in his personal record.

A Modular Milestone After 13 years, Modular Home Additions is about to celebrate The Big 1000. This highly acclaimed milestone is one that few home renovation companies can claim they have hit in less than 15 years. Modular is showing no signs of slowing down. So how can one renovation company cover so much ground, especially when considering the various logistics involved with a home addition or new build, not to mention the less than ideal building conditions Canadians are faced with for roughly 6 months of the year? The answer lays within the unique Modular approach to traditional home renovations and new builds. It is this process that can allow for a new home addition to be installed in a matter of just 3 days! Further to this, clients of Modular’s are not forced to pick up their lives and move into a different space while renovations are occurring. The company’s “no mess, no stress” allows for a smooth, quick renovation process as well as the avoidance of your

property becoming a long-term construction site.

A ONE-STOP SHOP So how is it possible for a renovation company to advertise a “no mess, no stress”renovation? By tackling the majority of the process away from the actual job site. After consulting with the Modular team, your home is assessed, the next step involves designing the project and sorting out permits, which the team at Modular will also handle. In order to maintain their calean and quick promise, Modular Home Additions builds the majority of each project offsite in a Toronto-based, controlled environment warehouse. Not only does this mean the bulk of the work is done away from your home, it also means that home additions and projects can occur all year-round, in spite of Canada’s chilly winter climate.

BEST OF 2013 IN TORONTO HOME ADDITIONS CATEGORY Aside from their quick turnover time, Modular is on the final stretch to the 1000 project mark thanks to their best

marketing tool ever; honest reviews from actual clients. Many of their clients have not only sent referrals their way, but they have also taken the time to write glowing reviews about the company on the popular website, Homestars.com, a site which offers those searching for a contractor honest reviews about available companies in their areas. Due to incredible feedback from their clients last year, Modular Home Additions has won Best of 2013 in Toronto in the Home Additions Category. Add thistobeingvoted“BestinTown” 4 years in a row. “Marketing to get new business is one thing and so is offering a different way of doing things that can simplify the lives of our clients. However, it is the positive reviews from our clients that we truly believe have helped us get to this point and we are so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to write about their experience with us” says Vladeta Jericevic president and CEO. “Here’s to 1000 more projects and 1000 more happy customers!”

Construction safety concerns addressed Metrolinx says it’s responding to safety concerns over construction taking place near Chaplin Crescent and Eglinton Avenue West. In a letter posted online at Metrolinx’s website for the LRT project (www.thecrosstown.ca), Crosstown community relations director Jamie Robinson writes Metrolinx has agreed to bar left turns onto Gilgorm Road for cars headed east along Eglinton. Previously no such prohibition existed. Robinson promised more signs but admitted the new measures will further restrict Gilgorm residents, whom, he writes, were also consulted by Metrolinx. Currently pre-tunneling work is taking place at the Chaplin intersection for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in advance of the arrival of the first of two tunnel borer machines (TBMs).

Fare dispensing machines will also be available which will also allow for the purchase of individual cash fares or tokens.
