LAWN SUMMER NIGHTS: Mark Heystee, left, Allison Smith, Alison Olson and Joshua Rhodenizer dress as ‘Mounties’ during the Lawn Summer Nights fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada Thursday evening at the Leaside Lawn Bowling Club.
The Eastminster United Church has resolved to divest the church’s financial investments from all fossil fuel companies. The church council voted unanimously to pass the formal resolution as part of the church’s commitment to climate justice. The divestment resolution was originally drafted by Ron McKay, a member of Eastminster’s Social Justice/ Green committee. He said that the divestment movement is not just a priority to the church congregation. It should be a moral issue that everyone must consider. “Whether you are a person of faith or whether you are simply concerned about the social impact, the environment is the bedrock in which we all stand,” said McKay. >>>group, page 2

child to rhabdo, it is important for us to take that experience and use it to help others,” said Dean and Johanna McCarthy, Meaghan’s parents, in a >>>church, page 2

>>>from page 1 McKay first presented the idea of divestment a year ago after the church hosted a workshop led by the Green Awakening Network and the Greening Sacred Spaces program from the Faith & the Common Good Network. Through the workshop, the church’s Social Justice/ Green committee was able to connect with experts and investment advisors to draft the resolution for the church council. The church council passed the resolution during their recent monthly meeting. McKay said the church was investing about $160,000 in stock with natural gas and pipeline companies. Now, they are looking to shift those investments and put them towards renewable energy
companies, such as solar power. “[The divestment] is just one part of a much bigger movement that is hopefully gaining steam,” said McKay. ‘livable planet’ “It’s an exciting momentum. If this is the movement that will make the governments and corporations to sit up and pay attention, it means we can have a more livable planet.” Eastminster church is a part of the Fossil Free Campaign, an online-based campaign that encourages colleges, city governments, religious institutions and individuals all around the world to divest their funds from fossil fuel companies. GoFossilFree.ca provides fact
sheets and other resources for the campaign. According to Fossil Free, the divestment process can take up to five years. However, McKay said Eastminster church will be completely divested within the next two years. The church is only the second religious institution in Canada to join the divestment movement. Trinity St. Paul’s United Church in downtown Toronto was the first to make the commitment in February. The Eastminster United Church is a congregation in the United Church of Canada that serves Toronto’s East York community at 310 Danforth Ave.

Taylor Creek Park bridge set to re-open jean ko din jkodin@insidetoronto.com It’s been almost two years since an extreme rainstorm destroyed three bridges at Taylor Creek Park. This Saturday, the bridge located on the trail connecting Halsey and Barrington avenues will finally be reopened. Ward 31 BeachesEast York Councillor Janet Davis is hosting a ribboncutting ceremony at 10 a.m., following a community walk along the bridge and some cake. “I want to use [the ceremony] as an educational opportunity about the work that’s being done,” said Davis. “We have some real challenges in keeping the park as a recreational and environmental priority.” The City of Toronto is
currently working with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) on a restoration plan for Taylor-Massey Creek. Public consultation for the environmental assessment (EA) is now under review and the final report of the EA study will be brought to city council in September. “We’re looking at longer term solutions for the creek,” said Davis. “The bridges are a nice symbol of the work we’re doing to value the park and bridge.” Taylor Creek Park’s two other bridges will be completed for later this year, she said. The Jeffrey Baldwin memorial statue will bear the iconic Superman ‘S’ insignia.
DC Entertainment will allow its iconic “S-Shield” Superman symbol to appear on a life-sized bronze statue in honour of Jeffrey Baldwin, who starved to death while in the care of his grandparents. The comic book company, which initially refused the use of its logo on the monument created by famed Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernethy, granted approval Wednesday morning. “I’m really happy; it’s been a bit of teeter-totter,” said Ottawa resident Todd Boyce, a father of four, who was so touched by Jeffrey’s story he created a successful crowd-funding campaign to raise $25,000 to commission a permanent memorial of the east-end boy dressed in a Superman costume. “(DC) was feeling a lot of pressure from people lashing out at them,” he said, adding he had accepted the fact that the statue would bear a ‘J’ insignia instead of the iconic Superman ‘S’. Boyce said the story has gone viral across social media,
and that he has received several emails and messages from people from the United States and Europe. “There’s thousands of people around the world who have learned about Jeffrey Baldwin,” he said. The issue came up about a month ago when the City of Toronto contacted him with concerns about using the Superman logo on the monument and wanted him to contact DC Entertainment to obtain permission to use the insignia. Boyc e c o n t a c t e d D C Entertainment via email and was told for a “variety of legal reasons” the Superman logo could not be used on the memorial statue. However, the Burbank, California-based company changed its mind Wednesday morning. “We are honored by the relationship that our fans have with our characters, and fully understand the magnitude of their passion,” wrote Courtney Simmons, Senior Vice President of Publicity for DC Entertainment, in a statement. “We take each request seriously and our heartfelt
thoughts go out the victims, the family and those affected. DC Entertainment uses a flexible set of criteria when we receive worthy requests such as this, and at times have reconsidered our initial stance. After verifying the support of appropriate family members, DC Entertainment will be allowing the Jeffrey Baldwin Memorial Statue to feature the Superman S Shield.” Boyce said he had already started to modify the design for the statue, which is waiting at the foundry to be poured. Plan B was to reshape the insignia from an ‘S’ into a ‘J’, he said Tuesday. However, that won’t be necessary. The statue will be cast in bronze and is expected to be ready to be unveiled to the community in its permanent home in Greenwood Park by September. Boyce also said a poem, chosen by one of Jeffrey’s sisters, will also be engraved on the top rail of the bench, which is part of the memorial. Jeffrey, who led a mostly anonymous existence in his
five years of life in Toronto’s Little India neighbourhood, was locked in a cold, dark bedroom with his six-yearold sister. Left with no food and only a toilet to drink water from, the little boy died Nov. 30, 2002 – just two months shy of his sixth birthday – and weighed one pound less than he had as a one-year-old. Jeffrey suffered severe abuse and neglect at the hands of his maternal grandparents and legal guardians Elva Bottineau and her common-law husband, Norman Kidman, before dying of starvation, pneumonia and septic shock. Bottineau and Kidman are now serving time for seconddegree murder in Jeffrey’s death. In 2005, a plaque and a tree were placed in the local green space near the splash pool in Jeffrey’s honour; however that memorial has been vandalized twice, most recently just days after the anniversary of his death. - with files from TorStar News Service

World Cup leaves legacy in Toronto
T
he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope that this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championship on Sunday. Whether it’s been by meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, or having the opportunity to learn more about another country and its culture, Torontonians are witnessing a unique opportunity for comour view munity building. Events that enable citizens Community from diverse backgrounds to gather together often help building a forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports by-product of events like these inspire stars sporting events of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup final or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO to see those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. One final note: Those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field (Montreal, Moncton and Edmonton are also hosting games). Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage (against Finland and Ghana) are here in Toronto.

Meals on Wheels program helps out resident
O
ne of the defining features of East York is True Davidson Meals on Wheels, which for more than 30 years has been serving the community. Based at offices at 25 Waterman Ave., the nonprofit volunteer service provides 30,000 meals to more than 300 clients each year. The service is offered at cost to all housebound adults, which includes seniors, new mothers and disabled individuals, six days a week and holidays throughout the year. Hot or frozen meals are delivered by a team of two volunteers (one driver and one carrier) to the door of the person requiring it between 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday. The nutritious meals are paid for within the means of the recipient and can be chosen from a menu that reflects the ethnic diversity
joe cooper watchdog of the East York community. I recently spoke with one of the beneficiaries of the program, Mary Haines, who had just turned 100 years young. She is still totally independent thanks to the meals on wheels program, she says. She calls “a blessing.” Mary, who is of Ojibwa heritage, with a mixture of German, French and Scottish thrown in for good measure, began her life in the Muskoka area of Ontario. Back in 1914 it was still being forested and her father was a lead lumberman in the area, with her mother coming from Scotland. One of her earliest memories was of the one-room schoolhouse with a big stove in the middle of the room to keep them warm
in the winter-time. When she grew up she came to Toronto looking for work and found it running a punch-press at Honeywell. There she worked for 34 years and unfortunately due to the noise of the heavy machinery she lost most of her hearing. Despite that handicap she remains cheerful and optimistic, enjoying each day to its fullest. She still gets around using the bus and walking, saying her health came from the years of walking long distances when she was young. She was “prescribed” the True Davidson meals on wheels program by a doctor at Toronto East General Hospital in order to ensure that she had a good diet. At first she was hesitant, but she decided to follow the doctor’s orders and now finds the program to be invaluable. It’s not just the food
that’s important, but also the visit from the volunteer as Mary loves to have visitors. When I went to visit her I found her apartment to be neat as a pin and Mary herself to be warm and welcoming. As she showed me photos of family and herself at a younger age I marveled at her energy and enthusiasm. Take some time to learn more about the organization at their website at www.tdmow.ca or call Hasina at 416-752-9667 for more details. The bottom line is: quality of life of the East York community is based on more than the income of those who live within it but in the investment that people make in each other. Help do your part. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at eym@insidetoronto.com

Concussion Clinic for children opens at Holland Bloorview Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital has opened its new Concussion Clinic for children and youth suffering from persistent symptoms that impact their ability to participate in daily activities for more than four weeks. The clinic, which opened July 2, is the first of its kind in Ontario. “Our experience indicates that one month is a turning point for many children with concussions. If they are still having functional issues after
four weeks, we start to see the situation worsen,” physician director Dr. Peter Rumney said in a statement. As expansion of existing acquired brain injury services at Holland Bloorview, northeast of Bayview and Eglinton avenues, the clinic offers a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together health care providers from neurology, neuropsychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and social work. Research indicates as many as 36,000 children and youth
playing minor hockey in Ontario suffer concussions every years. Head injuries acquired from other sports and falls are also causes of concussion. Holland Bloorview also offers free concussion education and information sessions for parents and kids interested in learning to recognize the signs of concussion and manage symptoms.

Dirty deeds in 2014 mayoral campaign? Flew away near Pape and Mortimer Aves. She is approachable. Please help us find her. Her family misses her very much.

s it going to get dirty, this mayoral campaign? That’s what Doug Ford suggested Tuesday, as he told reporters he believed that a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of barechested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when CityTV uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Mayor Ford’s sobriety coach, for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-yearold Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview that he had indeed been kicked, and added that he was surprised when a police officer
david nickle the city said that it was Ford’s coach who’d done the alleged deed. Furr said that from the force of the kick, it felt more like “a two-year-old.” No charges were laid in the incident. But Doug Ford is correct in saying that things are getting if not dirty, then extremely ugly following Rob Ford’s return. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea-culpa fell flat. The mayor still has supporters – he was given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Festival launch on Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirtwearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. Tommy Lenathen, a long-time city employee
from Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children. It may, one supposes, emerge that these two and also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives for one campaign or another. It is more likely, however, that the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have they crossed a line, these protesters, in doing so? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 20102014 term of office, that line is so far behind us that we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it.

The 12 young people gathered together at Toronto City Hall recently with Mayor Ford, city councillor Anthony Perruzza, corporate sponsers of the event Royal Bank of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Management Accountants, and Tom’s Place menswear, who outfitted the young men with tailored suits and ties for their trip. With the addition of Simcoe Street, the City of Toronto’s bike lane network grew a little larger this week. Painted bike lanes are now available on both sides of the street between Queen Street West and Front Street. They’ll also intersect with planned bike lanes on both Richmond Street and Adelaide Street, planned for later this summer. The lanes, which are not separated from the rest of the street, went into effect yesterday. Even with the planned expansion, the city is still far short of its goal to add 500 kilometres of paved bike lanes. opens bRanded online shop wTTC
