In a few years, one Toronto resident went from breakdancing in East York to inspiring youths around the world through hip hop with his Unity charity and urban arts festival. When Michael Prosserman, also known as Bboy Piecez, discovered breakdancing and the creative outlet urban arts offer, he had to share it with others. Fast for ward a few years, and Prosserman and his Unity charity, originally started as a high school class project, have helped more than 100,000 Canadian youths, and others around the world, learn positive expression, stress management and leadership skills through urban arts.

REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com In the early morning hours of Saturday, a resident living above Andrea’s Gerrard Street Bakery came home from a night out and saw an orange glow coming from the building on the corner of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street. “He’s the one that called 911,” said Judy Ouk, President of East Chinatown’s Chinese Chamber of Commerce. “During the phone call the explosions went and blew right out the window.” This phone call ended up bringing 70 firefighters to the scene of the four-alarm fire that broke out at 5 a.m.

As a teen, Prosserman found himself stressed and angry, and unable to express and relieve those feelings positively. Instead, he bottled the emotions up inside, causing him to become physically sick. “When I found breakdancing, or as we call it, B-boying, I was able to just let out all that stress, and it could just seep into the floor and get out of my body, and I was able to focus not only on what was in front of me, but on my future,” explained Prosserman. “That connection to using the art form to relieve some of the stress I had as a young person is really what helped me out, and helped me get to where I am today.” Using breakdancing, beat boxing, spoken-word poetry and graffiti art to engage youths, Unity empowers them to become positive community role models. >>>michael, page 8

Twenty-six tenants were displaced by the fire, which brought down the building, and is keeping surrounding buildings closed until Monday at the earliest. “It was very bad for the businesses, but we’re lucky that nobody was killed in the fire,” said Ouk whose husband owns Bill’s Lobster down the street from the collapsed building. Hazardous material crews continued to clean up Tuesday as the Fire Marshall waited on a structural engineer to determine whether surrounding buildings needed to be demolished as well. Trinh Huynh, owner of Sammi’s Gift Shop at 585 Gerrard St. E., had all of the goods in her store destroyed by smoke and water damage as a result of the fire. “I think I lost everything in there,” said Huynh who built up the business over 20 years. “I do hard work. uesday marked the one-year anniversary of the worst mass shooting in Toronto’s history. The incident at a community barbecue on Danzig Street in Scarborough took the lives of 14-year-old Shyanne Charles and 23-year-old Joshua Yasay, and left 24 people injured. Among the wounded was a 22-month-old baby. Much has happened since the shooting that shocked Toronto, including the arrest of two men and a 17-year-old boy in connection with the shooting. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, then-Premier Dalton McGuinty and Mayor Rob Ford all came to the area shortly after the shooting to pledge support in fighting crime and promoting community safety. Mayor Ford called for “a war” on gangs the city. That’s all good. It would have been a disgrace if the follow up to Danzig had been nothing but empty political promises. This month’s five provincial byelection campaigns, including the Scarborough-Guildwood riding in which Danzig is located, are the time to hold candidates and parties accountable on crime and community safety. What will not change is the critical role residents must play in making their own neighbourhoods safer. Earlier this month Danzig had local children playing baseball, meeting at a townhouse set aside as community space, and taking care and control of their neighbourhood. Residents across the city should do the same. That needs to be the lasting legacy of what was a horrible day in Toronto’s history, a commitment that we will never let such a thing happen again.

Dancing in the street takes on new meaning

iven my lack of prowess on the dance floor – even though the Salsa on St. Clair is just around the corner from my place – I’ve been a no-show since its inception. But I am proud to announce that I finally worked up the courage to go last weekend and both my face and feet were in abundant display. So how did I finally get over my insecurity? Not in the usual way, it turns out. I didn’t sign up for dance lessons, for example. Nor did I purchase a how-to DVD. I didn’t buy a copy of Dancing for Dummies, either. They say necessity is the mother of invention, well, it appears necessity is the mother of dance moves, too. I learned how to dance because I had no choice. You have to learn some nifty moves in order to navigate your way down the street these days in between all those black and orange

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY safety pylons. Those cones are everywhere it seems. I’ve never seen so many of them. Some are there for road repairs, some are there for sidewalks being rebuilt, some are for condos under construction and some are there for all the fallen trees and flooded homes and buildings courtesy of the recent rainstorms. So what’s a person supposed to do when the average street looks like an obstacle course and you have to have the athleticism and dexterity of a seasoned professional dancer just to get around? Alas, there’s no rule of thumb. Each street presents its own unique dancing challenge. So you have to figure it out as you go along. If you don’t know where to begin, I’ll take you through the approach that worked for me.

I started off with the Bolero on Briar Hill. It was just what I needed to get my feet wet. I couldn’t believe how well things turned out. Wet nothing – they were soaking by the time I was done. I was so inspired by that effort something told me to try the Rumba on Ridelle. That something knew what it was talking about. I did the Rumba till the cows came home. I did the Rumba with the cows for awhile after and then moved on. Now, brimming with confidence, I did the Escondido on Elm Ridge. It just seemed like the thing to do and boy was it. I was on such a roll I decided to set the bar even higher. Ready or not it was time for the Cha-Cha-Cha on Cha-Cha-Chaplin. Oh, I was ready alright. In fact, I was more than ready. I was moving better here than at all the others combined.

Next up was the Merengue on Montclair, which was followed by the Tango on Tweedsmuir, the Two-step on Tichester and I wrapped things up with the Lambada on Lonsmount. I was pumped. My training was complete. It was Salsa time, baby. So I scurried down Bathurst and when I made the turn west on St. Clair and neared Arlington I could hear the music blaring in the distance. “Music?” I screamed. “You get music, too? You’ve got to be joking.” I’d been doing my dancing all over the city these past few weeks without music. And to think I’ve been afraid to come here all these years. Local carpenter collecting hand tools for Africa Ted Dawson combining passions to help students ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Ted Dawson is combining his passions for travelling and carpentry for a good cause. The semi-retired East York carpenter will travel to Africa this fall to help students at a vocational training school. In addition, Dawson is collecting hand tools for the school, located near Moshi, Tanzania. The tools will be shipped there next month. “We’ll take them in any condition, rusty, dusty,” said Dawson, stressing it’s hand tools, not power tools, that he’s after. Dawson got involved in the project by chance several months ago. A carpenter for 30 years, Dawson had a few extra tools lying around so he posted an online ad to sell them. A retired engineer from Kingston, ON contacted Dawson about getting the tools for Tanzania’s Imani Vocational

Training school. “He wanted to literally take a handful of tools in his suitcase with him next time he went,” Dawson said. Dawson told the man he can get his hands on more tools and is willing to put some time into the project. “It kind of snowballed from there,” Dawson said. “He was just looking for a couple of tools, but it’s a large training school with different trades, and we looked at bringing over enough to equip the school and maybe tools that they can refurbish as well.” The two men have since become close friends and partners in this volunteer project.

Both have committed to helping the school for two months per year for five years. “I like to travel and I’ve wanted to go to Africa and then this just fell in my lap,” Dawson said. “It was like the two passions of mine: travelling and tooling.” Imani, founded in 2000, aims to equip youth ages 14 to 25 with skills to gain employment and independence. “We’ve met half our goal in terms of the space that we can fill in the container,” said Dawson, adding he’s also hoping to collect safety gear such as work boots, ear protection and safety glasses. He’s currently nipping at the heels of fellow councillor and Liberal candidate Peter Milczyn, but the polls are close enough to make it a possibility that on Aug. 2, Milczyn will be coming back to city hall and Holyday will be off. And if that happens, Ford will be looking to a new deputy, Scarborough Centre Councillor Norm Kelly, for the rest of the term. I predict Kelly will do a good job. Throughout his career, he’s always been a dutiful team player, of the dance-with-the-one-thatbrung-you variety. But he won’t provide the unique

Through his long career as a city councillor, Kelly has often seen nothing wrong with taking expensive trips on the public’s dime. And his dutiful loyalty to his mayor is undercut by the fact that Kelly was an equally loyal lieutenant to Mayor Ford’s predecessor, left-of-centre magistrate David Miller. Can Kelly do a good enough job, though? The short answer there is sure. After all, just as Deputy Mayor Holyday is campaigning hard for a new job now, Mayor Rob Ford is already campaigning hard for his old job back. And that will make for lighter lifting in the deputy mayor’s job – whoever it is that ends up doing it.

Both men have made careers of eschewing the perqs of a councillor’s office, and criticizing those who indulge. Ford’s insistence on holding down and voting against stop signs and traffic calming installed against staff’s recommendation was learned at Holyday’s foot. I remember when Ford came to City Hall for the first time, right before he was first elected, I met him and his brother Doug Ford in Holyday’s office. All of this has combined to make Doug Holyday an excellent deputy mayor. He’s a trusted enough member of Ford’s inner circle to take the lead on some of Ford’s biggest files, and also to be able

To mark the two-year countdown to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the Games organizing committee (TO2015) planned celebrations in 10 locations in the Golden Horseshoe including downtown Toronto’s Commerce Court last week. The opening ceremony for the Pan Am/Parapan Games will be happening on July 10, 2015. Along with demonstrations of BMX jumping and a trampoline routine by Etobicoke’s Olympic silver medallist Jason Burnett, a ceremony was held with various speakers including wheelchair racer Josh Cassidy. “In 2015 I plan to be right here competing for gold,” said Cassidy, who won both the 2012 Boston Marathon and 2010 London Marathon. “This will be the first time

Roger Garland, TO2015 chairman of the board, welcomed the crowd gathered in the court. “Let’s celebrate because there is a lot to celebrate,” he said. “This is a special day for Toronto. Today is just a preview of the spirit and excitement that the games will ignite. Let’s get excited Toronto. The games are coming.” Bal Gosal, Minister of State (sport) and MP for BramaleaGore-Malton, spoke to the crowd. “The countdown has begun,” he said. “We will be hosting one of the largest international multicultural sports events in Canadian history.” He added the facilities being built for the games will be used long after the games are over. “The excitement is growing,” he said. “The Golden Horseshoe will be the place to be in 2015.”

Ontario’s Minister for Tourism and Culture Michael Chan said his government has kept pace in the building of the facilities needed for the Games. “Our government is proud to bring the games to the country,” he said. Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee, told the crowd he saw the pride of Canadians at the Vancouver Olympic Games. “In Toronto 2015 we will see that pride again,” he said. “Our goal is we want to finish in the top two nations.
