Peace theatre campers set to stage production jean ko din jkodin@insidetoronto.com The Children’s Peace Theatre will be closing out their summer Peace Camp program with a Peace Gala this Saturday. Campers will be performing a theatre production called
White Noise, paying homage to the 50th anniversary of Marshall McLuhan’s book, Understanding Media: the Extensions of Man. Tanisha Taitt, director of this year’s theatre production, said that she is amazed at how well the topic is resonating with the
campers and working with the children has been inspiring. “So far it has been amazing. Everyone has a ton of ideas and it’s incredibly fulfilling,” said Taitt. “It takes you, as an artist, to places you didn’t think you can go with children.” Peace Camp is a three-week
summer program where about 40 children from age eight to 13 work with professional artists to create an original theatre production based on relevant social issues. Campers spend their first week learning about an important social issues that is relevant
to their daily life. This year is about McLuhan’s teachings on media and media literacy. The last two weeks are then spent drawing on the main subthemes that the campers have learned and they are split up into groups to create a scene >>>theatre, page 2

Parkette gets name of former local mayor
>>>from page 1 Parks committee on Metro Toronto Council from 1967 to 1976. “Naming a park after Willis Blair is an appropriate way to recogniize his community and recreational contributions to the city,” said Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis. “He was a good man and wellrespected.” During his time in public service, he played a major role in bringing sports to the city. In 1975, East York hosted the first World Junior Curling Championship. Blair also worked to bring Major League Baseball to Toronto, helping to establish the Toronto Blue Jays franchise. Blair passed away on April 5, 2014. He is survived by his wife Elsie, son Douglas (Marilyn), daughters Judy Feltcher (Charlie) and Janice Jones.
Theatre group’s programs promote peace among youth >>>from page 1 based on each subtheme. Campers work with professional artists and youth guides to develop the scenes, create costumes, music and set pieces for the production. “People are always blown away every year by how deep we go with our topic,” said Taitt. “The stuff that the kids show through [the production] is pretty profound.” Last year’s production was called Passage: a Moving Experience. It was about global migration and the struggles that refugees go through to escape violence in their home country. Karen Emerson, artistic director at Children’s Peace Theatre, said that this topic resonated with the campers as well because many of them have applied it to their own family’s experience immigrating to Canada. “Our mission has always been to explore peace and raise awareness on issues that are important to the youth,” said Emerson.

Since then, Children’s Peace Theatre has expanded, establishing several programs that promote peace in youth through the arts. Children’s Peace Theatre is located at 305 Dawes Rd., at the Massey Goulding Estate in Taylor Creek Park. Children from this year’s Peace Camp will be performing their original production on three dates. Matinee performances are today (dress rehearsal) and tomorrow at 1 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to pay what they can. The Peace Gala performace will begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults; $15 students and seniors; and $10 for children 14 and under. A cocktail reception will follow the show.

Leaside mourns loss of girl killed in traffic accident ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
A Leaside resident is mounting a campaign to stop speeding in the wake of last week’s accident that took the life of seven-year-old Georgia Walsh. “We’re putting lawn signs out front of our houses that are just asking people ‘please drive slowly, kids at play,’” Roger Cattell said. “I want drivers when they come into Leaside to drive as if it was their own neighbourhood.” Two local car dealerships are helping finance the initiative. “We initially asked for 300 (signs) to be printed, and I think we’re going to need a lot more,” said Cattell, noting he had 120 sign requests Friday morning alone, before the campaign was publicized. Police said Georgia was in the intersection of Millwood Road and McRae Drive when a southbound minivan making a right turn onto Millwood
struck her at 4:05 p.m. July 16. She was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children where she later died. Georgia was the daughter of federal Conservative Party president John Walsh. In shock Cattell, who lives on McRae, said the neighbourhood is in shock. “Maybe there needs to be flashing lights on top of all the stop signs, I don’t know, but I want to now get engaged in that kind of dialogue.” Residents have expressed concerns over high traffic volume in the area in light of lane reductions on nearby Eglinton Avenue. Police said the driver of the 1998 Toyota Sienna minivan, a 50-year-old man, remained at the scene. “Although physically he’s not injured, anybody that causes the loss of somebody’s life is traumatized emotionally and mentally,” Const Clint Stibbe said.
Staff photo/ANDREW PALAMARCHUK
Many residents in the Leaside area where Georgia Walsh, 7, died after being struck by a vehicle at Millwood and McRae are displaying signs reminding motorists to slow down.
Police haven’t yet determined how fast the minivan was travelling at the time. No charges have been laid. “If there are any provincial charges that the individual may be facing, we have up
to six months to lay those; with criminal charges we have longer,” Stibbe said. “The officers have to do a full investigation that includes any calculations, assessment of evidence, witness statements.”
A traffic fatality, Stibbe said, is treated by police with as much scrutiny as a homicide probe. “Both receive the same level of investigative attention.” A vigil at the Millwood and McRae intersection last Thursday afternoon, organized by Cattell, attracted about 300 people. “The atmosphere was sombre and poignant,” Cattell said. “As we took a minute of silence, the cars continued to drive through the intersection.” To order Cattell’s lawn signs email: leasidekidsatplay@ gmail.com. Memorial donations About half the sign requests have come from outside the Leaside area. “I had a woman from Mount Pleasant north of Eglinton ask if she could come and pick up 20 signs for her street,” Cattell said. “So what I hope is what we create here is something that any
neighbourhood in Toronto is free to use.” Georgia’s funeral was held Monday afternoon at St. Paul’s Anglican Church (227 Bloor St. E.). The Walsh family asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Georgia’s memory to the Sick Kids Foundation. “Georgia will be remembered by all her family and friends as a loving, warmhearted, vivacious girl who loved life and exploring everything around her,” the family wrote on the Sick Kids Foundation tribute page. “We are thankful for your thoughts and prayers, as well as your generous donations in memory of Georgia.” The family hopes to raise $100,000; more than $79,000 has been raised as of yesterday morning.

Tennis star Raonic serves up donation to Holland Bloorview FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com At first, Vesna Raonic was hesitant when her son Milos, the highest ranked male tennis player in Canada, said he was going to start his own foundation two years ago. “I thought he was too young,” she said of Milos, now aged 23. “But he knew what he wanted. He has dedication and focus and when he wants something, nothing can stop him.” Vesna, along with her husband, Dusan, accompanied Milos to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital recently where he announced a $20,000 donation to the hos-
parks and recreation division in training employees to better deal with disabled kids to allow for inclusion, said Tracey Bailey, president and CEO of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation. Sports participation Photo/COURTESY

The program will allow youth to participate in sport in their own communities and not have to travel to the Bayview and Eglinton avenues hospital, which could be an hour or more each way for some clients, Bailey said, adding the goal is to raise $100,000 and see the program expand to YMCAs
and Boys and Girls Clubs. Milos, who was beaten earlier this month in the semi-finals at Wimbledon by seven-time champion Roger Federer, said he hopes the donation will remove barriers and allow youngsters to achieve their dreams. This was Milos’ second donation to Holland Bloorview’s foundation. In February 2013, the site was the first recipient of funding from the Milos Raonic Foundation, which donated $40,000 to establish the Milos Raonic Kids Agility Clinic at Holland Bloorview, which helps disabled kids engage in physical activity. “I’m seeing the difference
it makes in kids’ lives,” Milos said. “It’s great to see the progress they are making in the agility clinic.” He said his foundation would donate another $30,000 to the Igniting Fitness Possibilities program if Holland Bloorview and the community raised $50,000. Marissa Papaconstantinou, 15, a competitive soccer and track athlete, said once people are able to look past her right prosthetic leg, she’s viewed as an able-bodied competitor. Ford, hecklers need to stick to city’s issues I
t happened on Monday and it will probably happen again. Rob Ford will attend an event and hecklers will protest against him, turning whatever the intended purpose of the event was into a sideshow of the debate over the competency and morality of Ford continuing as mayor. It’s a bad situation, which needs to be re-examined both by the Ford campaign and those opposed to him. On Monday, Ford attended the opening ceremonies for Woburn Park in the North Toronto area. The park means a lot to residents who live in the area, but you would never have known that by the circus surrounding Ford. our view Hecklers interrupted him, and the media fired questions at him Fact-based about his time in rehab, his use of drugs and more while Ford posed discussion for photos on playground equipment. What wasn’t discussed was necessary Woburn Park. It was a similar scene at the recent launch of the Pan Am/Parapan Games countdown clock in Nathan Phillips Square. It’s one year until Toronto hosts the games, but much of the event seemed to be dominated by a confrontation between an angry Ford supporter and those protesting against the mayor and the media in general. Both sides need to do better. Ford needs to respect the difference between a community event and a campaign event; and so do those who are following him around protesting. There is nothing more for the protesters to gain if they want to complain about Ford’s personal life. Whether they are wearing shirts or not, they need to stick to the issues of the campaign. Yelling at Ford about crack smoking gains them nothing. Right now, the protesters are probably helping Ford more than hurting him. What we want from this mayoral campaign is some solid, fact-based discussion on how to pay for transit improvements in Toronto, whether to abolish or stay with the Land Transfer Tax, and how to attract and keep businesses operating within the city’s borders. Those questions need to be asked and answered in an appropriate manner, rather than a circus-like atmosphere in which the campaign is currently.

Some reflections on how lucky we are
A
s I bicycled around East York this past week, enjoying the heat of this summer, I had to reflect on just how lucky we are. While we have had great disturbances in the city over the past few weeks, the true state of our community and society is one of peace. Certainly within our individual circumstances difficulties and hard times are never far away. That’s simply a fact of life. However, much of the world today lives in a daily state of turmoil and war which we are spared from experiencing except via the news. While we may think that we are deep in trouble with crime and other problems, the reality is that we are at peace. Take a walk around the streets of East York at any time during the day and you will see that reality.
joe cooper watchdog Frankly, the worst experience most of us will have is a blaring car horn or a random act of stupidity. I believe that the discontent that so many people are expressing today is not about a lack of law and order in our society but a weakened sense of unity within the community and the country as a whole. sense of unity The sense of unity that we once had as a nation seems to be at a low point with so many regional disputes and disagreements. It appears we have lost the understanding that we live in a country that extends “from sea to shining sea”. Rather than being a nation working cooperatively together towards a
common goal, we’re spending more time arguing about petty differences. Frankly, since the beginning of Confederation there has always been a great deal of push and shove in our nation’s daily life. Today, however, it seems that the aim is push us apart, rather than move us forward as a country. Political polarization, rather than consensus building, seems to be part of far too many people’s agendas. That seems to be the malaise that is making people feel that things are far worse than they really are. Whoever can heal that malaise will be a much welcome leader; no matter what political stripe they may wear. Despite all of these trials and tribulations, there is still a strong sense of patriotism being shown in East York. It is heartening to see the
many red maple leaf flags displayed on the streets that are not just bunting that shows up on holidays. patriotism However, patriotism is not simply a matter of prominently showing our flag. We really do need to work harder on ensuring that no one in this community, this province and particularly the nation should ever feel less of a neighbour simply due to whom he or she is. If there is one virtue that this country can teach the world, it is how the majority of people in this country do live together in peace and neighbourlinesses as is practiced in East York. Our community lives the city’s motto of “diversity is our strength” every day. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Laws must apply equally to all Maple Leaf Forever tree wood To the editor: People seem to be up in arms that Mayor Rob Ford didn’t stand when the other councillors were thanking those who organized the Pride Parade. Now I ask, if the yearly Greek parade were to have people on floats naked, simulating sex acts, gyrating and performing other acts, wouldn’t the police start making arrests? Last time I looked, performing lewd and lascivious acts in public were still against the law. Children at parade As well, aren’t children in attendance at these parades? And when I tuned in to watch the parade on a local TV station, there was a warning the content could be offensive to some viewers as there was nudity. If, as I mentioned above, these events took place at the yearly parade in Greek Town, and if the mayor did not rise to
thank the organizers of such a parade, would he then be considered Greekaphobic? Is there one set of laws for heterosexuals and another for homosexuals? If this were truly a Pride parade, it could be a parade with a real purpose, perhaps to raise money for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and to show those who are homophobic that gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals are just like everyone else and thus deserve to be treated the same as everyone else, and that includes obeying the laws. Kudos to Ford I give kudos to Ford for not jumping on the bandwagon. Everyone screams about Ford associating with criminals, yet our councillors laud those who flout the law publicly and call it Pride. By being a part of this parade, are they not supporting the breaking of laws? I ask, that being the case, how can they, in good conscience
You paid how much!? #ShouldaUsedToronto
point fingers at Ford? As for Ford so-called cherry picking those in the media to whom he will give interviews, can you really blame him from excluding those who not only profess their animosity for him, but rather than reporting the news, prefer to create it? If those in the fifth estate, bloggers, journalists and media outlets that operate outside of the mainstream media, take issue with Ford, isn’t that what columnists are for, as long as their words are not libelous? As for how his constituents view Ford, I guess we’ll find out on Oct. 27, but until then, he is still the elected Mayor of Toronto, and if is expected to follow the letter of the law, then so must those who organize, attend and take part in all parades. If the law doesn’t apply to everyone, there can only be one result...chaos. Dee C. Burns

to be used to make works of art JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Pieces of wood salvaged from Leslieville’s felled Maple Leaf Forever Tree are set to be crafted into unique works of art. Last Saturday, members of the The Toronto Parks a n d Tre e s Fo u n d a t i o n ( TPTF) alongside those from the Leslieville Business Improvement Area (BIA) introduced some of the local artists who have been selected for the project to the community. The event was held on the one-year anniversary of the storm that knocked down the silver maple at MJG Gallery, 1028 Queen St. E., just west of Pape Avenue. At this point, the confirmed artists include Mark Gleberzon (mixed media), Ian Busher (mixed media painting), Blair Chivers (silkscreen painting), Rob Croxford (mixed media paint-
ing), Laura Culic (encaustic painting), Christopher Hayes (mixed media), Jasmine Hum (encaustic painting), Wendy Kelloway (metalsmith), Gord Smith (sculpture), Carol Westcott (acrylic painting), Lorne Winters (oil painting), Keef (mixed media), Dan Springer (painting) and Cindy Scaife (acrylic painting). Additional artists will be invited to participate in the project once the amount of wood available from the Maple Leaf Forever Tree is determined. “The Maple Leaf Forever Tree was an important part of history in Leslieville. We are so excited its history will live on through our local artists,” said Andrew Sherbin, chair of the Leslieville BIA, in a statement. Andrew Sorbara, chair of the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation, in the same press release, agreed. “We are honoured to partner with local artists and the
Leslieville BIA to celebrate the creation of these incredible designs made from wood salvaged from the famous tree.” This fall, the completed pieces will be showcased and sold at a number of galleries in Leslieville. Proceeds from the sale of these works of art will be directed to TPTF’s Recover the Canopy campaign, which was launched earlier this year to bring awareness and support to local neighbourhoods within the City of Toronto hardest hit by the December ice storm. Visit www.lovetorontoparks.org for more information about this initiative or donate to it. The symbolic, 100-plusyear-old Maple Leaf Forever Tree is historically significant as it is believed to have inspired Alexander Muir’s unofficial Canadian anthem, The Maple Leaf Forever, in 1867.

Deal to sell TTC tunnel boring machines to China now off A deal between the TTC and a Chinese company to purchase four tunnel borer machines (TBM) is now off. The deal for the TBMs, which were used to excavate subway tunnels connecting Downsview Station and six planned stops as part of the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension, was shelved after Lovesuns Tunnelling Canada withdrew its $9.2 million offer, according to media reports. No reason was given for the dissolution of the sale, and it’s likely the TTC will look for a new buyer. Inside Ed Mirvish's office prior to the Lastman's Bad Boy and Honest Ed announcement from left to right: Police Superintendent Frank Bergen, Blayne Lastman, David Mirvish, Mel Lastman, and Russell Lazar
Getting around - by car, bike, subway, streetcar or other methods - is a major topic of conversation in Toronto these days. Transit is a key issue and it’s an important one for residents to be plugged into. We at The Guardian recognize that navigating all the information out there, about current projects, road
construction, future and proposed transit plans, is not an easy task. That’s why we and our sister papers at Metroland Media Toronto have launched a new transit portal online, where you can find transit information in a simplified fashion. See the new website at
insidetoronto.com/transit There you’ll find ■ transit reports by commuter type ■ transit reports by geography ■ project overviews ■ plus all the latest transit news Send feedback to gpeacock@insidetoronto.com
