SIU no longer investigating Dawes Road arrest ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com The province’s police watchdog is no longer investigating the circumstances of an arrest in East York last month because the arrested man’s injuries turned out not to be serious. The arrest, caught on video that was posted onto YouTube,
happened near Dawes Road and Park Vista shortly after midnight on June 22. The Special Investigations Unit began to probe the incident after a member of the media forwarded the agency a link to the video. The SIU said the video showed 33-year-old Craig Thompson being forcibly
arrested by Toronto Police Service officers. “The narrative included in the video link indicated that Mr. Thompson was hospitalized for a week after the incident and had difficulty walking and difficulty seeing from his right eye,” the SIU said in a news release. Thompson was interviewed by SIU investigators July 4 and
signed releases allowing them to obtain his medical records. The records, which were obtained July 10, showed Thompson’s injuries didn’t fit the SIU’s definition of serious. Police may conduct their own investigation, the SIU said. The SIU investigates whenever there is a serious injury or death involving police.
The South Riverdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) received a windfall this week and they have Mayor Rob Ford to thank. The centre received $46,195.65 from U.S.-based website Gawker’s Crackstarter campaign. The campaign acted as a fundraiser to purchase the alleged video of Ford smoking crack cocaine. The website made a commitment to donors to give the more than $200,000 raised to a Canadian drug addiction centre. “It’s huge. We’ve never gotten anything like this before,” said Lynne Raskin, CEO of SRCHC. “We don’t know what we’re going to use it for because we haven’t counted on it and not planned it.” The centre provides health services to people suffering from addiction among other physical and mental health issues. They serve more than 7,000 members of the commu>>>CENTRE, page 11
