The O’Connor Bowl has been a treasure of East York since 1952, and its closing this week marks the end of an era. February of 2010 saw the passing of the bowling alley’s founder, John Martin. Stafford Developments purchased the property in 2011 and a seven-storey mixed use commercial and residential development was approved for the site at O’Connor Drive near Bermondsey Road in 2013. O’Connor Bowl has been run on a year-to-year basis since the purchase.

Starting this week new traffic signals will operate at several intersections along Queen’s Quay between Bay Street to west of Lower Spadina Avenue which will allow for the return of twoway traffic to the street. The road, which was once referred to as one of North America’s ugliest, has been under construction since 2013 and has undergone a top-to-bottom facelift, including widened sidewalks, relocated streetcar lanes and a new red granite pedestrian promenade. The transitions are expected to take until Wednesday, June 10 to complete and will also include new transit signals for the 509 Harbourfront service. GO TRANSIT UNVEILS TRAINS wNEW

DRIVER FINES increase wDISTRACTED

Higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers are part of new road safety legislation passed this week by the Ontario Legislature. The new regulations are a hold-over from the previous term. They include upping distracted driving fines to a minimum of $300 as well as three demerit points. Also for the first time, drivers who open their car doors in the path of an unsuspecting cyclist, also known as “dooring”, will face demerit points in addition to higher fines. The new restrictions are expected to be in place before the end of 2015. Rahul Gupta is the Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears on Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

Police seek man, 25, after woman killed in apartment

JUSTIN SCOTT

Police are looking for a man after his mother was found murdered in her apartment Tuesday. Police were called to an apartment building at 189 Cedarvale Ave. near Danforth and Woodbine avenues at 12:15 p.m. “The landlord was checking on the welfare of a tenant that they hadn’t heard from in a while, and they found that

a woman had passed away inside the apartment,” said Const. Victor Kwong, adding officers found that there was trauma to the body and called in the homicide squad. The victim has been identified as 65-year-old Linda Scott. May be in Quebec Justin Scott, 25, is wanted for first-degree murder. He is described as white, 5’10” tall, 170 pounds with

red hair. Police have reason to believe that he may be in Quebec. Linda Scott is Toronto’s 21st murder of the year. People with information are asked to call the Toronto police homicide squad at 416808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477). Anyone who sees Justin Scott is urged not to approach him but to call 911 immediately.

Dieppe Park turf field unlikely, says local councillor SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com Fears of having to relinquish green space have residents of East York concerned for the fate of Dieppe Park. But Councillor Mar y Fragedakis assures residents that they are not to worry. The issue has sparked ten-

sion with community. Troubled residents began a petition one month ago to oppose the proposal made by Parks Forests and Recreation. The city has a set budget of $1.4 million to introduce an artificial turf soccer field while privatizing the green space which will include fenc-

ing the area off and padlocking it. The community is concerned about potential negative consequences of artificial turf. The approved budget is not specifically intended for changes to Dieppe Park said Fragedakis. Due to the lack of interest in changes being

made to Dieppe Park the budget will be allocated to another city park, she said. “East York is on the low end of green space in this city. The accessible green space for this city, the better,” Councillor Fragedakis said.

GOAL: East York Collegiate’s Tomas Lopes scores against Scarborough’s Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate during last week’s Toronto District School Board senior 4A soccer final. East York Collegiate won the game 4-2 and moves on to the provincial championships which kick off today in Richmond Hill.

Community tapestry event set for Dawes Crossing Sam Juric sjuric@insidetoronto.com Tucked away in the east end of East York, at the corner of Dawes Road and Victoria Park Avenue, is the recently revamped Dawes Crossing. It’s hard to miss. The barnlike structure made up of 100-250-year-old oak wood is featured prominently in the centre of the crossing, stretching along the centre square. “Dawes Crossing is a public

meeting place. It’s what it’s designed to do,” said Pamela Schuller, community artist. The man behind the vision of Dawes Crossing, Noel Harding, intended the structure to provide opportunities for the community both socially and environmentally. The structure generates income for community projects through the wind turbine and solar panels incorporated into the art installation which feed into the city power grid.

The energy produced is calculated and counted as revenue for the community. One of the community p ro j e c t s b e i n g f u n d e d through Dawes Crossing is the community painted tapestry installation proposed by Schuller, and slated to take place this Saturday. “The tapestry will incorporate people’s interpretations of wind, sun, water and wood,” Schuller said. In the selection process for the community projects

which will be fulfilled over the next eight months, the advisory committee chose six projects out of 14 proposals which were submitted by local artists. “We look for projects that will animate the space,” said Marisa Dodaro, a member of the advisory committee. Projects that are chosen by the committee are interactive, inclusive and accessible to the community, said Dodaro. The projects cropping up from the income generated by

Dawes Crossing give people the opportunity to have a hands-on involvement in their community, said Cindy Rozeboom, managing director of East End Arts. “Art is crucial in a community. It’s an amazing way to say things that can’t be said in other ways,” said Rozeboom. “Art is emotional, intellectual and it reaches out to people. It touches them,” Rozeboom said. Both Schuller and Dodaro are confident in the transfor-

mative powers community projects possess. “Art creates an engaged citizen,” said Schuller. “Sometimes we forget the benefits that art can give a community. Art has the ability to bring cultures together and bring new things to light,” Dodaro said. The Dawes Community Tapestry Project is set for 4 p.m. this Saturday.

Future of Gardiner Expressway should not be taken lightly

Write us

S

hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto Time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after they were given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.

Dieppe Park controversy needs public input

T

here has been a fair amount of discussion and controversy in the Ward 29 community of East York about proposed plans for Dieppe Park. The three-hectare park, located on Cosburn Avenue near Greenwood Avenue. is more than just a green space. It is a sports complex containing a baseball diamond, a soccer pitch, a multi-purpose sports field, a children’s playground with splash pad, and an outdoor artificial ice rink. The problem lays in the fact that East York has historically been park space poor and as a result what space does exist is highly coveted by those who use it. Dieppe Park is by all accounts heavily used by many different groups, each with their own aims and priorities. The fact is that despite this heavy use there has been a peaceful balance

joe cooper watchdog between the different groups and all have worked together to make the park a truly public space. Unfortunately, this balance is on the verge of being undone due to some significant changes being proposed by Toronto Parks and Recreation. The point of contention that is upsetting a number of community residents is a proposal to create an expanded soccer field with artificial turf that would be fenced and padlocked. Use of the new soccer field would be by permit only, thus excluding it for general use by the local community. As it stands right now the field is classified as “multipurpose”, meaning that it is open for pickup games and general access by the

public. What it also means is that the publicly accessible area of the park would be reduced by nearly 50 per cent, putting further stress on a community that already lacks available park space. More importantly, what green space that would be available would not be open areas, but islands of land interspersed between the different sports areas. Now having said all that, there is merit in the idea of having an improved area for playing soccer as it is reported that the East York Soccer Club has a membership of some 2,000 youths aged from 4 to 18. So there is obviously a need that needs to be met to have a good soccer field, but does it have to be made of artificial turf and be fenced and locked? There has been a playing field at the Dieppe Park location for a year and it

has been used in such a way as to balance the needs of the community with the needs of players. Why, at this particular point in time, does the City of Toronto feel the need to upset that balance and put the East York community under such unneeded stress? East York is a park poor area and the removal of such a large amount of green space will have a significant impact on the quality of life in that neighbourhood. If you have an opinion and wish to express it please contact either Tony Nagy at tonagy@toronto. ca at City of Toronto, or Toronto-Danforth Councillor Mary Fragedakis at councillor_fragedakis@ toronto.ca Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. It’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto Council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board to exclusively concern itself with the health and wellbeing of Torontonians. Part of this is because mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So when a medical officer of health has suggested pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, board members have obediently sent that information on to city council where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought mayors in the past would have done something about it. Well, maybe not David Miller, who generally found himself in

david nickle the city agreement with the pearlclutchers at public health, but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 2014-2018 board of health is shaping up to be a very different beast. On Monday, the board had before it a report from medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on the Gardiner Expressway debate. Tory favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in sug-

gesting was a bad idea. In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam. Cue the replacements this term, where a much smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata, along with a new crew of citizen appointees. This was enough to deepsix that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s chief medical officer of health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention.

Riverside BIA hosts celebrations ahead of Pan Am Games

Queen St. E.

Empire AVe.

McGee St.

Riverside is a buzz of activity. The urban neighbourhood with a small-town feel is brimming with one-of-a-kind businesses and restaurants. It spans from the Riverside Bridge over the Don Valley Parkway along Queen Street to east of the world-famous Degrassi Street. The neighbourhood is just 2.5km from downtown, and even closer to the Pan Am Athletes’ village, which is why the Riverside BIA is celebrating the Games and the neighbourhood with two events this weekend. Friday evening will see the launch of the Riverside Gateway Bridge Project - a $600,000 capital installation lighting the iconic Riverside bridge in Pan Am colours.

Join the Riverside BIA and community for games and races and refreshments at McCleary Playground at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Samba Parade at 7:45pm, along Queen Street East, while community torchbearers pass a symbolic torch along the route in the spirit of the Pan Am Games. The main event, the very first illumination of the Riverside Gateway Bridge, will start shortly after sunset. On Saturday, June 6 the third annual Riverside Eats & Beats StreetFEST will takeover Queen Street East between the DVP and Empire Avenue. This year, as part of Pan Am’s TO2015 IGNITE program, the event features live music, food and entertainment

including: cooking demos, flying yoga, kids activities, art and culinary tours and, of course, mouth-watering Riverside tasters. “It will really highlight how close we are to the Pan Am Games,” says Anjuli Solanki, Executive Director of the Riverside BIA. “The area will be a hub of activity, before and during the Games.” Throughout the summer Riverside will be hosting culinary and walking tours in the area. Riverside is also the new home of the Toronto Flower Market, a unique event that celebrates local florists and growers, taking place once a month on Saturday, May to October. Visit the BIA online at www.riverside-to.com for more details.

O’Connor Bowl a part of ‘cultural heritage’ of East York, says councillor >>>from page 1 “It’s breaking my heart. It was just like going home when you went there,” said Seyler. Through the years the O’Connor Bowl saw the history of East York unfold through the gathering of numerous bowling leagues. “My father bowled there for many years, he used to play on a provincial team. “The thing that’s sad is that there are still a few leagues that still play there,” said Davis. Seyler bowled there for half a century.

“I have bowled there for over 50 years. It’s a shame to just take it away from us,” Seyler said. Seyler is the head of the Tuesday Ladies League, and she said she was shocked to hear the league would no longer be bowling there after this Friday. “We knew it was coming but we thought we were OK for another year. Right now we don’t know what we’re going to do,” Seyler said. From avid bowlers in the community to the local councillor, a sense of nostalgia is triggered by the closing of

the iconic East York bowling alley. “O’Connor Bowl is a part of the cultural heritage of East York,” said Davis. Seyler is a beacon of optimism for the Tuesday Ladies League as she remains hopeful her bowlers will find other leagues to continue playing in, but is sad to see the O’Connor Bowl go. “It doesn’t seem right, not seeing it there anymore. You can’t find another one like it,” said Seyler.
