Volunteers have been going door to door along the Danforth, asking local businesses to adopt the tree closest to them. So far, 46 businesses have signed on. Janet McKay of LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) said the aim is to ensure all 142 newly-planted trees get adopted because “it’s critical they get watered in the first three years to really get established.” The trees represent a variety of species, including honey locust, silver maple and lilac. “As we care for them and water them and mulch them, they have an incredible potential,” said Catherine Dorton of the Danforth East Community Association. “These trees are going to bring

allowing other communities to easily adopt the program. There are about 10.2 million trees in Toronto, and about six per cent of them are on the streets, growing in urban conditions.

Celebrating her 103rd in East York SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com After celebrating her 103rd birthday recently, Edith Woodley of East York is still the life of the party. A small celebration for Woodley’s birthday took place at Vicky’s Hair Styling in East York. “I’ve been going to Vicky’s for 42 years,” Woodley said. Del Mastro said Woodley deserves a party. “I wanted to show my appreciation for her. Edith is special and I like to give back to my clients,” Del Mastro said. With more than a century of life under her belt, Woodley still appreciates the small things, such as having her hair styled every two weeks at Vicky’s. Born on June 1, 1912, Woodley was one of nine children in her family. Woodley’s only son, Doug Woodley, attributes his mother’s youthful disposition and strength to her work ethic. “She’s stubborn and she’s always been a hard worker.

Edith Woodley, centre, with hairstylist Charlie Nucifora, right, and salon owner Vicky Del Mastro during a 103rd birthday party held for her recently at Vicky’s Hair Styling in East York. Woodley has been a Vicky’s patron for more than 40 years.
Even now, she always wants to clean,” Doug said. Alongside countless family memories that took place in East York, Woodley remembers the decade her family spent in California. The family put all their belongings in storage and headed for Los Angeles in search of something new.
“We had no idea where we were going, only that we were heading to Los Angeles. We didn’t know a soul there,” Woodley said. Home is where the heart is and after a decade in California, the family decided to return to East York. Woodley has lived in her apartment on Cosburn
Avenue for the past 42 years. The East York apartment has seen the gathering of the nine Woodley siblings over the years and several other birthday parties for Woodley where the whole building has been in attendance. She is the last remaining sibling of the Woodley family. She said she feels lonely at
times, but relishes in her byweekly trips to Vicky’s. At her most birthday party, Woodley was showered with flowers and cake by regulars at the salon. Doug said he is thankful for his mother’s presence in his life. “She has always supported me through everything,” he said.
Kennedy House Youth Shelter marks one year on Pape Avenue SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com For Andres Gil, Kennedy House is not just a shelter it is a safe haven. Gil is a young immigrant from Venezuela. He was one of the first youth the shelter opened its doors to since its grand opening in 2014. “This is a house full of friendly people who want to help as much as they can,” Gil said. Located on Pape Avenue, Kennedy House is a recent addition to programs offered by Kennedy Youth Services.
Parkview Hills festival marks 25th anniversary
Friday, June 12 marked the shelter’s first anniversary on Pape. In celebration of the milestone, Kennedy House hosted a party for the youth, staff and the community. “We’re trying to get the kids back on their feet in a safe, clean and nurturing environment,” said Gloria Baldwin, fundraiser for the shelter. The Kennedy Youth Shelter is an emergency shelter that is open 24 hours, every day. “We are a small shelter. We really get to know the youth that come in,” said Tracy Hardinge, manager of shelter

services. Hardinge attributes the success of the shelter to its ability to individualize the programs to cater to their specific needs. “We want to help youth find their forever home,” said Hardinge. The shelter provides 23 beds and is more often than not at full capacity. Youth who seek refuge at Kennedy House have access to common rooms with various activities, an industrial kitchen in which a chef prepares healthy meals every day and helps coach the youth

on how to prepare meals for themselves and a computer lab. Gil said he is thankful for the shelter’s computer lab as he relies on it to communicate with his family back home; Skype and email are his lifelines. The shelter welcomes those aged 18 to 24 years old, but most often sees males from 20 to 24 years old. Of the youth that come to Kennedy House, 25 per cent are female, 25 per cent are of the lesbian gay bi transgender queer community (LGBTQ), and the remaining 50 per cent

are male. Kennedy House provides programs on resume writing and interviewing skills for youth who do not have employment or school to go to during working hours. Organizations such as Aids Community Toronto have formed a partnership with the shelter to provide workshops and information sessions on sexual health. “The goal is to get the kids back on their feet, to help them get a job or go back to school,” Baldwin said.

Over the past 25 years, the Parkview Hills community has watched George Michelis build a local business, raise a family and continuously give back to his community. Mi c h e l i s h a s v o l u n teered on the Parkview Hills Community Association board to organize and lend a hand in community events such as the Parkview Hills Festival since he moved to the neighbourhood 30 years. Fundraising and community involvement helps a community to grow, Michelis said. Justin Van Dette from the association agreed. “We have a strong group of volunteers who represent the needs of the neighbourhood,” he said. The festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this weekend, is one way to help the neighbourhood. In the past, the festival has raised funds for causes that include The East York Collegiate Breakfast Program, True Davidson Meals on Wheels and Presteign Heights Elementary School. This year it plans to raise $25,000 for the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation to extend the facility and update general equipment. The community has already raised $15,000 through other fundraising initiatives. The Parkview Hills Festival, which includes diverse food, activities for all ages and live entertainment, takes place Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m until 5 p.m at Presteign Heights Elementary School, 2570 St. Clair Ave. E. nformation overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes disseminating the truth from the fiction a difficult task. When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray? There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned. Dubbed JournalismIS, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability. Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in our print ediour view tionof The East York Mirror and other newspapers, on television ‘News is the and online touting the benefits of good journalism. lifeblood of We’re great at telling other people’s stories, but as journalists we’re democracy’ not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do. That’s why the team at The Mirror and all other Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign. The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do. We need to demonstrate the power behind good journalism in engaging the public and fostering a stronger connection between individuals and the neighbourhoods in which they live. “News is the lifeblood of democracy,” said Mary Agnes Walsh, campaign spokesperson and Winnipeg Free Press reporter at the JournalismIS launch in Toronto last week. “Our campaign is aimed at initiating a wider conversation about the value of journalism and what we all need to do to support a robust journalistic culture in Canadian society.” So, we invite our readers to tell us what they look for in good journalism. Does that come across in the pages of The Mirror and online at www.insidetoronto. com? Where would you make suggestions for improvement? Todmorden Mills celebrates our early historical heritage and current arts

hile the weather is still cool at times, you can tell by little signs of change that summer is coming. The days are beginning to be hotter, though it is certainly cooler in the evenings and in the morning. Soon it will be time to think about new schedules and projects. One of the main characteristics of the East York and Leaside community has been the way in which people get involved in volunteer actives, or being a member of a hobby or sports group. This year if you are looking for something different to do, why not consider belonging to one of our groups who specializes in local history and heritage. There is no better way to develop a real sense of roots in one’s community
joe cooper watchdog than through developing a good knowledge of its past. East York has a history dating back into the 1700s for European settlement and the area around Toronto has been the home of many First Nations people for thousands of years. Leaside, while relatively new, has had an extremely important history based on industry, aviation (it had an airport at one time), and automobile manufacturing. One good starting point in becoming involved in promoting local history and heritage would be Todmorden Mills. Located on Pottery Rd. in the Don Valley, the site dates back to 1796.
At that time, governor John Graves Simcoe gave one pair of mill stones to Isaiah and Aaron Skinner to that they could construct the first grist mill on the Don River. The area quickly developed into a major industrial complex. In 1821 the first brewery in the watershed was built in 1821. Later in 1827 a paper mill was built on the site out of the old mill building. The site today has many buildings that are used to document and interpret the industrial history of the Don Valley. A number of groups also share the site, such as the East Side Players Theater. If you have not had an opportunity to visit the Todmorden Mills site you are certainly missing some great opportunities.
From June 20 to Sept. 13 there will be the EcoArt-Fest, which will feature art activities, art tours and musical performances in a licenced outdoor space. There are also the regular site tours that take place Wednesday through Sunday starting at noon for which a nominal fee is charged. There are other events taking place that can be seen at www.toronto.ca and doing a search on Todmorden Mills. If you would like more information on becoming involved in the Todmorden Mills site, or being a member, call them at 416396-2819. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. Utility box vandalism frustrates Earl Haig students To the editor: For several months, the Grade 8 students at Earl Haig have been communicating back and forth with the director of the Bell Box Mural Project, Michael Cavanaugh. The result is the murals on the Bell utility boxes at Hillingdon Avenue. In the first week of June, the Grade 8 class and Mr. Cavanaugh came together to complete the herculean task of creating a theme for and painting the Bell utility boxes on Hillingdon Avenue. We worked together for two days painting the utility boxes with a beautiful butterfly theme. Unfortunately, black graffiti was sprayed on top of the monarch butterfly which was painted by Michael Cavanaugh. After eight months of planning work, and two days of difficult painting, our mural lived to see only five days. We are overwhelmed with feelings of anger and sadness at the sight of the work which stood vandalized. We had worked very hard on the mural, and it was ruined in a week’s time. Although the mural has been vandalized, we hope people will
still be able to see the beauty of the mural and forgive the vandals, just as we have. The mural still brought us joy and pride to the school. We are very proud of ourselves for completing the mural. We are well aware this is a ubiquitous occurrence across many urban areas, but we hope that the vandals will refrain from such actions in the future. Mr. Cavanaugh was kind enough to get Bell to eliminate the tag. After the graffiti was removed, the mural needed to be touched up. The great artists of Grade 8 touched up the mural. Mr. Cavanaugh, again with the help of Bell, got the touched up boxes clear coated, ensuring prevention of further vandalism. In a way we are relieved. Thanks to Michael Cavanaugh, who was fantastic to work with, and helped us throughout all of our issues. Grade 8 students, Earl Haig junior Public School

Cosburn girls win soccer title

The senior girls soccer team from East York’s Cosburn Middle School avenged their only loss in the past three years by winning their second city title in three years. Cosburn won this year’s TDESAA (Toronto District Elementary School Athletic Association) Grade 8 girls championship game last week, 4-3 in overtime over Glenview Senior Public School. A minute into the extra
frame, Cosburn drew a foul outside the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick. The ball was blasted into the top left corner of the net, winning the game. Glenview scored with just a minute left in the game to send it into overtime. The same two teams met up in last year’s Grade 7 city semifinals with Glenview prevailing to hand Cosburn what turned out to be their only loss in three years. Cosburn won their city

semifinal over LambtonKingsway Junior Middle School, the western conference champions. The East York school advanced into the city playoff round by capturing their third straight South Conference championship over Winona Drive Senior Public School. The same group of Cosburn girls had also won the Grade 6 city soccer title for Toronto District School Board schools.

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Tory did?

EASY TO POST Just take a picture of what you are selling and you are pretty much done!
Maybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practice of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday. The regulations, yet unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier
david nickle the city this year at the Toronto Police Services Board — a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today, Mayor John Tory will make an attempt to stop carding, bringing a motion to the Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking, by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto journalist Desmond Cole describing the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. It’s a wonder that the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true that police value carding as an intelligence-
gathering strategy. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor, Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto, and it is unlikely police enforcement, or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. It is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals seem bound to learn that lesson themselves.

makes service promise wTTC The TTC is promising more improvements to off-peak transit service. At a press conference Monday, TTC chair Josh Colle announced 52 bus and streetcar routes, which also includes the city’s four rapid transit lines, will have 10 minutes or better service outside of the rush hour period, starting in the fall. Details about the plans are vague, but the result promised by Colle will be shorter waits for transit, especially outside of the downtown core. The TTC board is expected to approve the improvements to service at its monthly meeting scheduled for June 22. TO FOCUS ON NEIGHBOURHOODS wSERIES
This year’s season of Planners in Public Spaces (PiPS) will focus on neighbourhoods. The initiative, a pet project of outspoken chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat, is intended to make the often insiders-only world of city planning more accessible to the public. Every year since 2013, the series places civic
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT planners in an informal setting to talk about city building themes one-on-one with locals. For more details, visit www. toronto.ca/planning/pips MAPS TO GUIDE TOURISTS wINTERACTIVE
This week the city launched a network of interactive signs intended to make the city more accessible to the thousands of visitors expected to attend the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Inspired by other cities’ experiences, the Toronto 360 Wayfinding Strategy, a.k.a TO360 includes two sizes of “info totems”, descriptive pillars depicting areas of interest and local maps, as well as “finger posts” which literally point the way to local landmarks. The new signage is found in the Entertainment District, St. Lawrence and most prominently in the Financial District, whose Business Improvement Area helped with planning
and partial funding of the $800,000 pilot project. The strategy could also expand citywide following the Games if it is successful. METROLINX TO HOST OPEN HOUSE Want to know more about Metrolinx’s plans to build a new facility to house new transit vehicles to operate on the Finch West LRT? The province’s transit planning agency has committed to having the light rail line completed by 2021. It’s already purchased a stretch of vacant land on Finch Avenue West between Norfinch Drive and York Gate Boulevard which will serve as a maintenance and storage facility for the LRT vehicles if an Environmental Assessment on the project is approved. Metrolinx will hold an open house on its plans for the facility on June 24 starting at 7 p.m. at St. Wilfrid Catholic School, located at 1685 Finch Ave. W.

Campaign promotes good journalism GRACE PEACOCK gpeacock@insidetoronto.com A coalition of media outlets, associations, unions and journalism schools are banding together in a marketing campaign to spread the message that professional journalism just can’t be beat. Pegged ‘JournalismIS,’ the campaign is backed by Metroland Media Group and will feature newspaper, television and online advocacy ads touting the value of professional journalism. “Our starting point for this, was a general worry that journalists weren’t doing enough to tell their own stories,” said campaign spokesperson Mary Anges Welch at the launch Friday, June 12 at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto. The former president of the Canadian Association of Journalists and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press said: “We’re not talking enough about the contribution we make nationally, but also on the local level to Canadian
public life. We’re not talking about the value of an independent, reliable, ethical, impartial journalistic culture in Canada.” The advertisements, which will begin to appear across news outlets Saturday, June 13, for the next four months, aim to rally the journalism community to increase awareness, recognition and support for professional journalism. Ian Oliver, president of Metroland Media Group, agreed the media does a great job telling other people’s stories, but not so much their own. And having professional journalists at the grassroots level is just important as covering stories on a national level, he said. “Many people overlook the importance of community journalism. I think we’re the fabric of the community,” Oliver said. “Metroland employs about 500 professional journalists – we’re a significant part of the journalism world. And if Metroland isn’t providing a forum for the community,
investigating stories and providing information, nobody else is doing it.” The ads will promote 10 different principals key to journalistic standards, with messages such as “Journalism is committed to telling the truth”; “Journalism is getting answers” or “Journalism is essential to democracy”. Toronto Star reporter Chantal Hébert said she hopes the campaign sparks a conversation among the public about the role journalists play in shedding light on important issues, but also in driving public engagement. “I believe a better informed public will come to better informed decisions, but more importantly, a well informed public is one that will be more engaged.” Campaign sponsors include Metroland Media Group, The Toronto Star, Ryerson School of Journalism, Unifor, and the Canadian Association of Journalists.

Jane is a beautiful, sweet 43 year-old nurse and looking for the right man. Jane has never been married, has no children, and no baggage. She loves football, hockey, going to concerts, and being outdoors. She is very down to earth, and easy to get along with. She is a great listener and always wants to help others. Jane is a very charitable person; she donates and volunteers for many causes including children’s charities and animal shelters. Jane doesn’t drink or smoke, she is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and is open to new experiences. She’s a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than the outside. She is looking for a good man who is energetic, fun, adventurous, has a good sense of humor, is down-to-earth, and a little bit romantic.
