Warrant issued for suspect in Walpole Avenue murder SALE ENDS JUNE 24TH

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a 20-year-old suspect wanted in connection with a murder in the Greenwood and Gerrard area last month. The warrant was issued Tuesday, a day after Conrad Grizzle narrowly escaped being arrested by Toronto police. “We just missed him,” Det. Joyce Schertzer told a press conference at police headquarters Tuesday. Grizzle is considered armed and dangerous, police said. He is wanted in connection with the murder of Douglas Parker, who was fatally shot in the chest May 24 shortly after he and a group of friends got out of a taxi at 60 Walpole Ave., northeast of Gerrard Street and Greenwood Avenue. Parker was the intended target, Schertzer said. His friends were shot and are recovering from their
injuries. A nine millimetre handgun was recovered from the scene. Grizzle is wanted for second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. Schertzer advised the suspect to surrender immediately. “We have alerted all border security, neighbouring police services and other supportive agencies with regards our interest in your immediate apprehension,” she said. “Every police officer on duty in Toronto has your photograph and the chief of police has afforded our investigative team every resource available to bring you into custody. Seek the advice of someone you trust, speak to competent counsel and turn yourself in.” A n yo n e f o u n d t o b e harbouring Grizzle will be
charged, Schertzer said. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 9-1-1 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477). Motorcyclist killed wPolice in Broadview crash are looking for wit-
nesses after a motorcycle slammed into a pole, killing the 46-year-old driver, Monday. Police said the motorcyclist lost control of his 1992 Yamaha while driving northbound on Broadview Avenue approaching Danforth Avenue at 8:27 a.m. The motorcyclist was taken to a trauma centre where he was pronounced dead. Police don’t believe there was any other vehicle involved in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the traffic services unit at 416-808-1900.

Fans to gather on Danforth for crucial Greek World Cup game The World Cup is off to a roaring start in Brazil with a number of surprising results that have had Toronto soccer fans either cheering joyfully or shaking their heads in frustration. The tourney opened Thursday afternoon with host Brazil scoring the game’s first goal into their own net. After that, Brazil recovered and
went on to win 3-1 over Croatia, On Friday, the tournament forged an even stronger link with Toronto soccer fans as Jonathan de Guzman, who grew up in Scarborough and played with the North Scarborough club until he moved to Holland at age 12 to further his soccer skills, was in the starting-11 for the Netherlands game against defending World Cup
champs Spain. The Dutch easily won that game 5-1 with de Guzman on the field until the 62nd minute when he was subsitute out. There’s still plenty of games left to come in first-round Group play at the tournament, which wraps up next Thursday, June 26. For a full World Cup schedule, visit us at

Beaches-East York selects new MPP; Liberal Arthur Potts JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Rollercoaster ride and nail-biter are ways to describe what transpired on election night in Beaches-East York as first-time Liberal contender Arthur Potts defeated four-time NDP incumbent Michael Prue. A tight race from the time polls began to filter in Thursday night, Potts, an entrepreneur in the waste diversion field and Yorkville bar coowner, topped former East York Mayor and councillor Prue by 431 votes; the lowest margin of victory for a Liberal. Beaches-East York was the last riding in the province to declare a winner shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, June 13. “Certainly, it’s been surreal. It’s been a joyous occasion,” said Potts, who threw his hat into the ring a little over six-weeks ago after being approached by the local Liberal riding association to run in BeachesEast York. “No one was anticipating this budget wouldn’t pass.”

Potts said he could sense a shift in the riding early on in the campaign. “You could just feel the groundswell of support within the first two weeks. We had lots of sign requests
and lots of inquiries,” he said, crediting the more than 140 Liberal volunteers who worked hard to pull the vote on Election Day. Prue, who marked 25 years of elected public service this year, said two weeks before the polls closed he had a strong sense it would be a close race after hearing what voters were saying at the door. “It was not a shocker. I told people that this was going to be a cliffhanger,” he shared. “I could sense changes were coming. ... In East York, north of the Danforth, there was no problem. We won almost every poll.” However, it was a much different climate, south of the Danforth. “It’s not the Beach of old. There are a lot of rich homes, new people and no NDP tradition,” said Prue, who went to bed Thursday before the new MPP-elect was announced in Beaches-East York. “I’m disappointed, of course.” Prue said he feels strategic voting played a big role in his election loss. “There’s an irrational fear of the Conservatives in Beaches-East York.
In this riding, the Conservative was going nowhere,” he said. Potts, who lives just outside of the riding at Danforth and Pape avenues, said he knocked on doors seven to eight hours every day of the campaign and took careful note of the issues and concerns raised by voters in Beaches-East York. “I suspect I ran a marathon every day,” he chuckled. Potts said there is “tremendous angst” in the south end of the riding surrounding development and maintaining the character of the Beach community. “I think we need to tighten up the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board),” he said, adding rules need to be clarified and the City’s secondary plan also needs to be tightened up. He also pointed to the resumption of work on Toronto East General Hospital’s $300-million redevelopment project once funding is reinstated when the Liberal budget is passed.“It’s a critical piece of new infrastructure,” said Potts, adding he’d also bring his small business acumen as well as 20-plus years
of lobbying experience to Queen’s Park. Prue, however, said the budget the Liberals are proposing just doesn’t make sense. “They cannot possibly deliver that budget. For all the hype, there’s just no money. They’re going to have to be Houdini,” he said of the Liberals’ $12 million budget, which proposes $5 billion in new funding with no real tax increases and no deficit in two year’s time. “That’s what people wanted to hear,” said Prue, adding people were upset with him when he told them the Liberal budget wouldn’t work. Prue said at this point he isn’t sure of his next steps, except that he’d be taking it easy for the time being and doing some gardening at his home and cottage. “Come September I might go to Europe or I might do nothing,” he laughed, adding he’s already received a few phone calls asking him to run municipally.

ith last week’s majority government win by the Kathleen Wynne Liberals in the provincial election, her party has been given a strong mandate by voters in Toronto and surrounding areas to make transit a top priority over the next four years. Her victory can also be interpreted as strong support for the Metrolinx Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) which was first introduced under the Liberal government of Premier Dalton McGuinty back in 2008. The election of Rob Ford as Toronto’s mayor in 2010 and a Liberal minority in the 2011 provincial election saw transit become highly politicized. Talk on how it would be paid for and the debate between LRTs and seemed never-ending. our view subways In the last year, though, we have started making decisions Voters should on our transit future and how to for it. The provincial, city and expect action pay federal governments agreed on an extension of the Bloor-Danforth on transit subway from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. The city approved a property tax increase of 0.5 per cent to help pay for its portion. Yet, it comes up repeatedly as a municipal election issue with mayoral candidates Olivia Chow and David Soknacki saying the Scarborough subway extension should be scrapped in favour of an LRT. As was mentioned at a mayoral candidates’ debate this week, discussion of a Scarborough subway extension should be finished. Every Liberal MPP elected in Scarborough supports that subway extension, and made it a key part of their campaigns. Any thought that this could now be changed with a new mayor of Toronto or change in councillors cannot be accepted by Wynne and her majority government. The same goes for a number of other transit plans across the Greater Toronto Area. Voters are expecting transit action from the Liberals. Wynne’s party took away seats from the only PC (Doug Holyday in Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and three NDP incumbents in Toronto due in no small part to her transit plans. The Liberals also gained seats in the 905 communities around the city including Newmarket-Aurora, Durham, Burlington and Halton. Wynne now has an opportunity to take that mandate and do the right thing when it comes to transit expansion across the GTHA.

A special thank you to Michael Prue for his years of service to East York T
o borrow a phrase; I come not to say goodbye to Michael Prue but to praise him. Yes, the election results show that Arthur Potts has won by several hundred votes and that is to be respected. In the meantime, Michael Prue does deserve recognition for the contribution that he has made to East York. Like many people — including myself — Prue chose to put down roots in the former borough and found it to be a nurturing place to live. He decided to give back to the community that had given so much to him by becoming a councillor back in 1988. Those were the years when being a councillor was a part-time position and there was only one secretary shared among eight councillors. He worked hard and gained the respect and trust of not

only his constituents, but also his fellow politicians. So when then mayor Dave Johnson stepped down to enter provincial politics in 1993, East York council elected Prue as the acting mayor. That role was further legitimized when Prue was elected mayor by the citizens of East York in the next election. amalgamation When East York’s forced amalgamation into the new city of Toronto was announced, Prue was in the forefront of opposition. As a result of Prue’s efforts, a non-binding referendum for the former borough resulted in the highest rate of rejection amongst all the metro
municipalities. This was not surprising, for under the leadership of Prue as mayor East York had the lowest level of taxes along with the highest level of client satisfaction in Metro Toronto. Not only that, but the borough had money in the bank and when the East York Civic Centre was to be paid off, taxes were to be lowered. career Prue’s political career continued after amalgamation, first with his being elected to city council for the new City of Toronto in 1998. Then with Frances Lankin resigning in as MPP in 2001, Prue ran for that seat and won with no problem. During the next three terms of office Prue served both his constituents and his NDP party with energy and
dedication. However, during the last few years many changes have come to the riding of Beaches–East York. New people New people have moved in and those who remembered Prue’s accomplishments have passed on or moved away. It’s a new political world in the former borough and particularly south of the Danforth; a reality that Arthur Potts tapped into. Potts should live up to and respect the legacy that Prue has established in the riding.

Mammoliti keeps playing his games Parkdale is not a “pedophile district.” Deputants who come before city hall committees asking programs be spared are not de-facto communists. A secret cabal of left-wing Toronto councillors have not been wiretapping the councillor from Ward 7. I could go on for an entire column, correcting the fanciful and offensive assertions that have fallen from the lips of Giorgio Mammoliti over the years. But like so much low comedy, it would simply underline the same point: Mammoliti, who is one of the longer-squatting denizens of Toronto council’s lunatic fringe, is pretty creepy. If it weren’t for our cracksmoking mayor doing the heavy lifting, Mammoliti could even be an international embarrassment for this town. Of course, one person’s international embarrassment is another’s local-boymade-good, and Mammoliti’s constituents in northwestern North York have been happy enough with his behaviour to send him back to city hall

Mammoliti’s remarks and actions are all calculated to stoke an oldeetymee suburban-urban grievance, using as his accelerant a deep social conservatism that frankly mirrors the mayor’s. It’s not surprising, then, that as the municipal election campaign gears up, Mammoliti should choose to wind things up with that business about “pedophile districts.” community Parkdale is an interesting and vibrant community these days, but a couple of decades ago it was known as a place marred by crime and drug abuse – much as many people still regard Mammoliti’s own Jane-Finch community. So. Deride a community that’s got a rocky history, and just for good measure throw pedophilia into the mix, and suggest the local councillor is representing their issues over the safety of children.
It is classic Mammoliti game – one that he’s been playing since 1995, when he left a one-term stint on Bob Rae’s NDP backbench at Queen’s Park to join former mayor Mel Lastman’s North York Council, then went to Toronto council as amalgamation took hold. Mammoliti became wellknown mostly in the breach – his lack of discipline when it came to spending his office budgets, his limelight-seeking behaviour, his demagogic mischief-making and his changeable loyalties. Which all, as I may have mentioned earlier, points to one truth: Mammoliti is pretty creepy, and he seems to revel in it; it is a game to him. For the rest of us, it’s a shame. The mayor’s follies aside, when our neighbours speak about the dysfunction and absurdity of Toronto city politics, they are thinking in large part about Mammoliti – amusing himself with verbal pugilism, at the expense of almost everyone else.

Canada is turning 147 this year and East York is putting on a huge birthday bash with music, food, fireworks and of course, a big parade. The 57th East York Canada Day celebrations will start the parade route at Dieppe Park (455 Cosburn Ave.) at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 1. A caravan of floats, march-
ing bands, marchers and walkers will join the parade, representing different community groups. At around 11 a.m., the parade will disband at Woodbine and Cosburn Avenue and the celebrations at Stan Wadlow Park begins. The Maladies of Adam Stokes at NXNE music festival JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com East-end residents Emily Anderson and Mikey Hill, members of the sixpiece folk rock group The Maladies of Adam Stokes, have been busy rehearsing for their upcoming show at the 10-day North by Northeast (NXNE) music festival. The band is scheduled to perform Friday, June 20 at 9 p.m. at the Tranzac Club, 292 Brunswick Ave.

It’s an incredible festival and we’re always excited to jump on board,” said Hill, guitar player, lead singer and primary lyricist for the band. Anderson, a photographer by
day, plays violin and piano for the group. The couple has lived near Danforth and Donlands avenues for about a year and a half. The Maladies of Adam Stokes’ four other members include North York residents Kohji Nagata (electric and slide guitars, trumpet and glockenspiel) and Brett Harris (bass), midtown resident Josh Awerbuck (lead guitar) and Scarborough’s Ted Turner (drums).
Originally from Newmarket, Anderson played the piano as a child and the violin in high school but stopped playing both instruments for several years. “I was really frustrated at first because I hadn’t played for about 10 years. It was a learning curve but the guys were really patient,” she said during a recent interview. Having worked together now close to five years, Hill said the members of The Maladies of Adam Stokes
have developed a synchronicity and understand each other. That said, the band still sits down together on a regular basis to write new songs and come up with concepts for their future direction. “Over the years every member has grown in different ways. We’re always reevaluating our future steps to stay fresh,” said Hill. The band, which released its first full-length album City of Trees in late 2012.

Additional morning and evening trips are planned for both the Lakeshore east and west lines Saturdays, while Sundays will see six eastbound and seven westbound trips added to make the number of trips on both days the same. The TTC is getting set to re-open the intersection of Queen Street East and Leslie Street following the conclusion of major streetcar track construction. The project to build a track to connect the TTC’s new streetcar fleet with the Leslie Barns maintenance and storage facility has resulted

A bizarre event unfolded this week at Chester Station when a distraught woman apparently climbed under a subway train and refused to budge. The incident took place on a busy Monday morning and suspended Bloor-Danforth line service for a short time between Chester and Yonge stations. In a tweet, TTC communications chief Brad Ross said the woman had climbed under the train and staff cut
power to the station. A short time later, Ross tweeted that the woman, who has not been identified, was successfully extricated and receiving help. SPECIAL PRIDE PARADE PASS wTTC
The TTC is offering a special pass for attendees of this year’s Pride Parade as part of Toronto’s hosting of World Pride festivities, a global celebration of LGBTQ communities that starts Friday. For the parade weekend, June 28 to 29, an unlimited pass is available for groups of up to six people with a maximum of four children. There are also individual weekly passes available that are on sale now. The TTC also unveiled last week a plaque commemorating World Pride to be permanently displayed outside Wellesley station.
