Students learn about need for bike helmets Road safety campaign offers free helmets, bike cycling tips at Blake Street school Tara Hatherly thatherly@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of East York youths are ready to bike, skateboard and in-line skate safely this summer, thanks to the Toronto Helmets on Kids campaign. This year’s Helmet on Kids event took place at Blake Street Junior Public School, where students received free helmets, road safety advice and bicycle tune-ups. “The event, complete with Elmer the Safety Elephant, was a huge hit with students here at the school,” said school principal Kiki Karailiadis. “Students had a lot of fun, and many rode away with shiny new helmets. Student safety is important to us, and we’re thrilled that this event and generous donation makes it possible for hundreds of our students to cycle more safely this summer.” The Toronto Helmets on Kids campaign is organized by critical injury law firm McLeish Orlando LLP, which purchases the helmets out-of-pocket. Five hundred helmets were donated this year. “We’re more than happy to finance this. It’s such a great event, and it gives so much back to the community,” said McLeish Orlando lawyer Patrick Brown, who brought the Helmets on Kids campaign to

Toronto in 2009. The campaign was started by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association in London in 2002, and continues to expand throughout Ontario,
thanks to association members. It has donated more than 10,000 helmets to Ontario children since its inception, with approximately 2,000 of those going to Toronto youths.
“We’ve all had cases here, the lawyers and the partners, where kids have hit their head when they haven’t had a helmet on, and we’ve seen the significant damage that can
happen to a young child without a helmet,” said Brown. “We thought, boy, this was a great opportunity that we could do something in relation to cycling, safe cycling, in relation to Toronto where we practice, and do something to reduce the number of head injuries out there, so it kind of fit nicely into what we do on different levels.” Helmets left over from this year’s event at Blake Street Junior Public School were donated to the Eastview Boys and Girls Club, which will distribute them as needed. The Eastview Boys and Girls Club works with McLeish Orlando to choose the schools the campaign visits each year. Club members also helped out at the event, fitting helmets alongside Brown, who is also the director of Cycle Toronto, which supported this year’s campaign, along with the Toronto Police Service, Cycle Solutions, Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher, and the Ontario Safety League and Brain Injury Society of Toronto. Students learned to obey traffic signals, to yield for pedestrians, and to add a bell and reflectors to bikes to alert road users to their presence, and lights if riding at night.

Build a sandcastle to help raise funds for Toronto East General Hospital Annual sandcastle building competition takes place this Sunday Get your pail and shovel ready for the Beaches Lodge seventh annual sandcastle building competition on Sunday. The event will take place on Woodbine Beach, 1675 Lake Shore Blvd. E., where money will be collected to determine a winner and then donated to Toronto East General Hospital. “I’m looking forward to a big
sandcastle,” said Graeme Boyce, the event organizer. “I go in every year with the same thought of building something big, nice and splendid with a big moat. Not intricate, but big.” Boyce said the definition of a sandcastle has changed over the years to include things from sandcastles to sculpted sand dragons. More groups from local pubs,
banks, schools, boy scouts, TEGH and families have formed teams each year – building 12 sandcastles last year alone. The event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. People walking by will vote by putting dollars in designated cups for the sandcastles. The money is then collected from each sandcastle and a winner is determined.
“We’ve had a lot of fun,” Boyce said. “We’ve been looking forward to reclaiming our trophy.” There is no cost for teams to join, as long as they show up ready to put their best sandcastle forward in the time allotted. – Rebecca Field Jay Yeo sculpts the side of the Lord of the Rings-themed sand castle during The event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. the Beaches sixth annual Sandcastle at Woodbine Beach. he City of Toronto wants to host the 2017 World Youth Championships in Athletics. The event features the world’s top track and field athletes aged 17 and under. Right now, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal have all shown an interest in hosting the event, and are in the process of submitting their bids to Athletics Canada. In December of this year, that organization decides which Canadian city will have the right to hold the games. The Canadian bid goes to the International Association of Athletics Federation in late 2014, at which time it will decide the host country. Some 170 countries participate, and it’s estimated there will be 1,400 athletes and team officials in attendance. our view 600 Canada last hosted in 2003 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Athletics Pan Am legacy Canada estimated the championships generated some $37.4 milwill serve lion in benefits to the Province of Toronto well Quebec, with $28 million of that being in Sherbrooke. Toronto’s hosting would come on the heels of the Pan Am/Parapan Games set for August of 2015 in our city and surrounding areas. Having hosted the Pan Am Games just two years earlier will put us in an excellent position to host the World Youth Championships. One of the key parts of the Pan Am Games in 2015 is the legacy it leaves Toronto in athletic infrastructure and experience. We will already have an army of trained volunteers who can be activated for any number of international community events in Toronto. The legacy of that volunteer force goes beyond athletic events. Their enthusiasm, pride and experience will make them a powerful force. Perhaps those volunteers become the cornerstones of a new civic ambassadors program that spreads the message of Toronto the Good on a continuous basis. Real people who are spreading the good word about Toronto is more valuable in terms of international credibility than figureheads who simply do business elsewhere or serve in a political capacity. Residents don’t have to look far to see the impact the 2015 Pan Am Games are already having; the aquatic centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough for example. Toronto’s bid for the World Youth Championships is another part of that legacy.

True Davidson Meals on Wheels celebrates 40 years
T
his past Tuesday I was invited to attend a very special occasion, that being a luncheon in honour of those who volunteer for True Davidson Meals on Wheels. True Davidson, as you know, was East York’s first mayor. Her feisty personality helped to define the former borough’s tradition of neighbour helping neighbour. Davidson’s philosophy of community building held that if you wanted a better neighbourhood, you didn’t complain and expect someone else to fix it. Instead you rolled up your shirtsleeves and did something yourself, preferably with a group of like-minded neighbours helping you. For 40 years the volunteers of True Davidson Meals on Wheels have been doing that. This year is a special year due to having moved part of their operations into a new facility at 25 Waterman
joe cooper watchdog Ave., Suites No. 4 and 5, near O’Connor Drive. This has allowed for more space to operate in a more effective manner than previously. Despite this success, the program is running into difficulty maintaining its ability to provide such an important service to the community. From the start of True Davidson Meals on Wheels, a core group of volunteers have been enthusiastically keeping the organization going, but they are aging. Today, many of the volunteers are now older in age than many of the people whom they provide meals for! The problem is that far too many people are busy due to work, home and other demands on their
time. The demographic of East York is changing so that the number of people with “free time” is dropping. Despite this, True Davidson Meals on Wheels was able to recruit new volunteers last year, but this has been barely enough to lighten the load. community Any help from the community would be appreciated, even if it is only for one lunch time per month. You do not have to drive a car, but can be of great help by running the meals to the door or doing other work. At the luncheon, I met a wonderful group of people who gain a great deal of satisfaction in their lives by helping their neighbours. I also saw that their work and efforts were fully recognized and certainly not taken for granted in any way.
As a result of this there were many people there who had been volunteers for as long as 30 years. Even with these volunteers the organization lost an important service due to government budget cuts. They are no longer able to offer the food shopping service that they once were able to, which has had a negative impact upon many people who are mobility challenged. Take some time to learn more about the organization at their website at www.tdmow.ca or call Hasina at 416-752-9667 to ask questions. The bottom line is that quality of the life of the East York community is based on more than the income of those who live within it but in the investment that people make in each other’s lives. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at eym@insidetoronto.com

Time for Mayor Ford to at least get a driver F
or years, Doug Ford has been saying that his brother Mayor Rob Ford needs a bodyguard. The events of last weekend, in which Mayor Ford was doused with a frozen drink at a public event, might be considered supporting evidence for that idea. One shouldn’t take such a dousing too lightly. As a 27-year-old yoga instructor has learned to her peril, allegedly tossing a drink in a gentleman’s face fits within the legal definition of criminal assault. The cup could as easily have been filled with a more harmful substance – or it could have been a knife, or a gun. It wasn’t this time. And the mayor and his non-security staff reportedly proved more than capable of chasing the woman down, apprehending her and turning her over to the criminal justice system. It’s understandable that the mayor might have been reluctant to include an
david nickle the city
actual bodyguard on his staff until now. It paints an unfriendly picture of a mayor who prides himself on personally dealing with constituents’ problems. But the time might have come to reconsider that. During his recent troubles, the mayor has availed himself of city hall security – the department that is on hand to look out for the security of city hall itself and the safety of the public – to ensure his own comfort and safety as he moves about the building. And while so far he’s been hit by nothing worse than a frozen beverage and impertinent questions, it would be fair to suppose that he’s raised more ire than your typical mayor. Still, a bodyguard added to Mayor Ford’s staff might be more than he needs. One addition that might be helpful, however, would be another one that his brother Doug, as well as
his deputy mayor Doug Holyday have also been suggesting for many years: a driver. They raised that matter most vociferously in 2012, when Mayor Ford was photographed reading speaking notes while driving along the Gardiner Expressway. If he’d had a driver then, Mayor Ford could have studied his notes riding shotgun. A driver might also be helpful on some of the mayor’s other issues — specifically, his frequent tardiness when attending public events. And a driver might also provide the level of protection that our mayor demonstrably needs, while being prepared for various emergencies, medical and otherwise, to lend a hand. If nothing else, the driver might provide another pair of eyes to warn the mayor away from the various dangers and traps our city presents, before he encounters them himself.

that not only should this tax remain in place, more ways should be found to source new revenues from the real estate movers and shakers in this city. They aren’t suddenly going to away and take their urban sprawl with them if they don’t get what they want. We don’t need to subsidize them because they can afford it. Ford wants to reduce the
tax by 10 per cent, creating a estimated $34 million loss to the city coffers. This money, if spent wisely, is vital to our city services and we can’t afford to turn our backs on this income. If the players in the market want to play, let them but they have to be under no illusions about the cost of doing business in Toronto. Chris Belfontaine

Toronto would be wise to keep land transfer tax To the editor: I have heard that Mayor Rob Ford is still intent on reducing, if not eliminating, the city’s land transfer tax. Bessarion station was the inspiration for a humorous web video released last week. Finding Bessarion focuses on the journey of filmmaker and sketch comedian Jeremy Woodcock to find the mysterious station located on the Sheppard line which is likely the TTC’s least-visited subway destination. “I am going to Bessarion Station to prove to myself
TO in TRANSIT it exists,” says Woodcock during the six-minute long video. He adds, “I have no idea what I am going to see there.” Does Woodcock ever find Bessarion? You’ll have to watch the video at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=6pa6eXErmmw panel seeking members wTTC

The TTC is looking for individuals with engineering and other backgrounds to apply for membership on an expert panel evaluating plans for future subway station exits. Made up of volunteers, the panel, which will meet between the fall of this year and throughout 2014 will work on addressing community concerns with TTC staff as well as assist with developing criteria for future second exits construction. The recruitment effort is part of a massive revamp of the TTC’s public consulta-

The last subway train from a fleet dating back to the 1970s made its final journey in the TTC system last week. The H-5 trains, which were manufactured by Hawker-Siddeley, were characterized by orange and brown seats and yellow interior doors. When it began service in 1977, they were the first subway cars to have air conditioning. At noon hour on June 14, the final H-5 train left Wilson Station on the Yonge-University-Spadina line.

Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Notice of Study Commencement Study Overview The City ofToronto has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study to assess flooding problems during heavy rainstorms in Basement Flooding Area 2 (see map) and to recommend solutions to alleviate future basement and surface flooding in this area.
Background The City ofToronto has historically experienced severe storms that have caused recurrent surface and basement flooding. On August 19, 2005, the City experienced a severe storm that resulted in flooding of many residents’ homes, caused erosion in ravines and watercourses, and damaged City roads, bridges, and sewers. In response, City Council approved the “Basement Flooding Work Plan” to undertake investigations to alleviate future flooding in 34 basement flooding areas, including Area 2.
The Process The study will follow the requirements set out in the Municipal Class EA document (amended 2011). It will define the problem, develop and evaluate alternative solutions, assess impacts of the proposed solutions, and identify measures to lessen any adverse impacts. Members of the public and interest parties will have opportunities to provide their input at key stages throughout the study.
Public Consultation Two Public Information Centres (PICs) are planned for this study. The first PIC is tentatively planned for Fall 2013. City staff and the consulting team will be present at the PIC to provide information, answer questions, and discuss the next steps in the study process. Notification of the PICs will be advertised in the local community newspaper and notices will be mailed to addresses within the study area.
We would like to hear from you
Public consultation is an important part of this study. Visit the project website for more information or contact us if you want to be placed on our mailing list for updates. Mae (Rigmea) Lee Public Consultation Unit City of Toronto Metro Hall, 19th Fl. 55 John St. Toronto, ON M5V 3C6

SUPPORT FOR ONCOLOGY AND HEMATOLOGY PATIENTS: Toronto East General Hospital’s oncology and hematology patients will be more comfortable thanks to a donation of BestEverSleep™ cushions by members of Fallingbrook Presbyterian Church. With patients often in the clinic for many hours, these cushions provide much more support than a traditional cushion as they support the head, neck and shoulders. After trying out the new cushions, Maria Lakas, 15-year patient of the clinic said “These cushions are wonderful!” The funds were raised as part of the church’s outreach initiative, and a delegation came to the hospital to make the presentation.

Library garden part of tour >>>from page 1 approach to it.” Along with a wide variety of planted trees, shrubs, flowering plants, vegetables, fruits and herbs, tour guests can enjoy garden art and furniture, as well as a koi pond and waterfall, Japanese stroll garden, a unique Irish shed, a hand-made pergola and more. This year’s tour also includes a new garden at the Leaside Public Library, planted by the society last year to honour its 25th anniversary. Passports for the tour are $10 each, available from five local businesses - Royal LePage at 1391 Bayview Ave., Stars at 900 Millwood Rd., Urban Nature Store at 939 Eglinton Ave. E., Write Impressions at 1515 Bayview Ave., and Gentry Clothiers at the Sunnybrook Plaza, 660 Eglinton Ave. E. Passports are also available the day of the tour from the Leaside Public Library, 165 McRae Dr., where the soci-
ety will have a membership and information table set up. Society members will also be at each garden to answer questions about the group. Passports Passports include admission to all tour gardens, along with a tour map, and garden addresses and descriptions. Proceeds from passport sales support Leaside Garden Society’s community outreach programs, which include sponsoring local students to attend the Toronto Botanical Garden, providing hands-on planting projects for special needs students, organizing community plantings and more. For more information about the tour, call 416-4818919. Residents interested in featuring gardens in next year’s tour are invited to contact leaside@gardenontario.org or speak with club members during this year’s tour, which takes place rain or shine.
Every year is a great one for the tour, noted Weslak. “Every year, even though you’re looking at gardens, it’s a new experience,” she said. “Each garden, some have water features, some have fountains, and so it’s just a different take each year. It never gets tiring, it never gets boring, it never gets kind of dull ... Each time, you just get inspired, you go and you think: ‘Oh I could do that, or I didn’t know you could put that plant there!’” Relax and let nature be your guide, she invited. “It’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon surrounded by beauty, and to lift your spirits,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful time, I certainly wouldn’t miss it ... You never go away without being inspired about something.” The tour is accessible by walking, driving or public transit.

A fundraiser is underway to reunite a dying Thorncliffe Park resident with her son. Edna Aldovino, who came to Canada through the live-in caregivers program, worked here to support her only son Kenneth, who lives in the Philippines. After working to build a better life for her son in Canada, and applying to bring him here, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer that has spread to her liver, brain and kidney.

Bowmore students’ art on display REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com
Readers’ Choice Contest
Hanging on the wall of the cozy Lazy Daisy’s café at Gerrard and Coxwell hang 23 portraits of students from Bowmore Road Public School. Painted, drawn, gluedtogether, the artwork is different colours, shapes and sizes much like the grade fours and fives who made them. What started as a classroom project to teach students portrait drawing, evolved into drawings to make art with a message that was meaningful to them. “About midway through I realized that the kids work was really worthy of being shown,” said Kara Del Aguila, the students’ teacher who organized the display which will be hanging at Lazy Daisy’s until June 27, the kids’ last day of school. “To me, it was spectacular for this age group.” From Picasso-like manifestations to portraits made entirely with yarn, each portrait has a different message

about who the child is, as well as a display of their artistic ability with shading or colour. Del Aguila had a discussion with her students about messages in art, and that everything could potentially be read as having meaning or intention. “That’s a pretty heavy conversation for nine, 10 and 11-year olds, but the idea was that every choice you make reflects you or a message.” One student, was able to colour his face in the same style as President Obama’s
campaign posters, with red and blues shading his face. Another drew herself wearing a hijab in front of the Pakistani flag, to represent where she came from and how she dressed before moving to Canada. “Some of the kids actually are recognizable in their portraits,” said Del Aguila. “They’re proud of themselves which is the most valuable thing for me to watch.”

Finals recap

Staff photo/DAN PEARCE
The Toronto District School Board elementary school city soccer finals were held last week at Eglinton Flats. At left, a Diefenbaker Elementary School player keeps his eye on the ball while being surrounded by Rosethorn Junior School players. Above, the Cosburn Middle School girls Grade 6 team celebrate their city championship.
Cosburn, Diefenbaker and Earl Grey schools win city titles The Cosburn Middle School girls Grade 6 soccer team not only won their Toronto District School Board (TDSB) championship in the top division one – they did it without allowing a single goal all year. The East York school won the championship game earlier this month 1-0 in sudden death overtime at Eglinton
useum
Flats, over Bedford Park Public School from north Toronto. The East York team scored the ‘golden goal’ two minutes into the extra frame. The players were definitely ecstatic to enjoy the thrill of victory as last year the core of the team experienced the agony of defeat when they earned a berth in the champi-
onship game – but lost it. This year they were on a mission. They advanced from their first tournament at Riverdale Park, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 11-0. They won their quarterfinal game at home 4-0, and won their south division final tournament by a combined score of 7-0.
GATSBY GARDEN PARTY
The Cosburn girls weren’t the only soccer champs in the building, however. Attached to Cosburn Middle School (which offers grades 6, 7 and 8) is Diefenbaker Elementary School, from JK to Grade 5. The Diefenbaker boys Grade 5 soccer team also won their championship at the top division one level.
Diefenbaker beat Rosethorn Junior School from Etobicoke 3-0 in the championship game. The girls Grade 7/8 divisionone championship was won by Riverdale’s Earl Grey Senior Public School. The girls won their championship game 2-1 over North York’s Windfields Junior High School.
