Triangle Program marks 20 years of supporting LGBTQ students JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

BJ Barone and Frankie Nelson have recently released a children’s book titled ‘Milo’s Adventures: A Story About Love,’ about their journey to parenthood.
Birth of son inspires couple to publish children’s book JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Two years ago, Frankie Nelson’s and BJ Barone’s lives changed forever with the birth of their son, Milo. The married same-sex couple, who are both high school teachers, became parents with the help of a gestational surrogate. Shortly after Milo’s birth, a moving photograph of the Danforth East residents embracing their newborn son for the first time went viral, receiving both positive and negative attention as well as inspiring a lot of discussion about gay marriage and parenting. Earlier this year, Barone and Nelson once again made headlines when that same image, which was snapped by photographer Lindsay Foster, was illegally used in anti-gay propaganda in Italy and Ireland. That upsetting experience inspired the couple to finish writing and self-publish a children’s book they’d been working on titled Milo’s Adventures; A Story About Love. Good friend Debbie Donsky, who is also Milo’s
Same-sex parents aim to inspire all types of families godmother, illustrated and co-authored the 36-page book, which is written from Milo’s perspective and talks about surrogacy, different types of families and the common thread of love. “It’s been about a year in the making,” Nelson said during a recent interview. “We thought this book is a good way to let people know Milo is well loved.” In a Ju n e 9 re l e a s e, Nelson said he hopes Milo’s Adventures will “inspire people to embrace and appreciate all different types of families, not just the ones with a mom and a dad.” He also said they hope the book will encourage other couples or individuals trying to start their own family. Barone described the project as their son’s story of love and a “celebration of diverse families,” adding at its heart, Milo’s Adventures is about educating people. “Our life and family has become open to public
support and scrutiny and in order to keep it positive, for us and others, and try to make change in our world with regard to acceptance, we knew a children’s book would be the perfect thing to create as a family,” he said in a release. “Family is about love, and we will continue to teach that and lead by example, kids are so open-minded and curious and a centre focus of family, so this story focuses on speaking to them.” Milo’s Adventures; A Story About Love also aligns with the province’s sex education curriculum and can be used as a tool in both the classroom and at home, Barone noted. Officially launched on June 9 just in time for Father’s Day as well as during Toronto’s first official Pride Month, Milo’s Adventures can be purchased at Glad Day Bookshop at 598A Yonge St. and at Book City at 348 Danforth Ave. as well as on Amazon and at www. familyisaboutlove.com Barone and Nelson are also available for book readings. An innovative and groundbreaking east-end Toronto high school program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) teens is marking special milestone. The Triangle Program, which is housed in a bright, lower-level space at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Toronto in Riverdale, is celebrating its 20th anniversary tonight with a celebration in Regent Park. Called Safe to Learn, the fundraising event, which will feature stories from those who have been positively affected by the Triangle Program, will be held at Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas St. E., from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost $150 and can be purchased online at www.mcctoronto.com/ triangle20 Television personality/ political satirist Rick Mercer will serve as the evening’s host, while John Campey, the executive director of Riverside’s Ralph Thornton Centre, will be the honourary chair alongside Meredith Cartwright, Vicky Bassett, Bonte Minnema, and Michael Dolan. Campey, a former Toronto Board of Education trustee, alongside Tony Gambini, a social worker, founded the Triangle Program in 1996. One of three programs that make up Oasis Alternative Secondar y School, the Triangle Program is the first of its kind in the world and even after two decades is the only LGBTQ-focused high school in Canada. More than 600 students have participated in the program since its inception two decades ago. Currently 36 students attend the Triangle Program, which offers a combination of small teacher-lead classes as well as self-directed study and social supports. Its pupils graduate with a high school diploma and are wellequipped to go on to postsecondary studies. One of the program’s key objectives is to give at-risk youth a safe and positive place to study, while surrounding them with a community of

Anthony Grandy and Jeffrey White are the co-teachers at the Triangle Program, an alternative high school in Riverdale for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth and allies.
Safe to Learn gala supports innovative east-end school supportive and accepting peers and teachers. “The most important thing for students is the sense of community. They can just focus on being themselves and being successful students,” said Jeffrey White, who has taught at Triangle for 13 years and is its longestserving teacher. During a recent interview, White said he wishes the Triangle Program existed when he was in high school and couldn’t say enough about how much he enjoys teaching here. As is the case for many LGBTQ teens, high school wasn’t an easy experience for White, who faced homophobia and ultimately decided to leave school at the age of 15. “The moment I arrived here was like I’d died and gone to heaven. This isn’t just a job or a profession, it’s a calling,” he said. “On my worst day this is still the best job I’ve had.” Grade 10 Student Kaleb just started attending the Triangle Program this year but already said it’s been a positive experience.
“I really don’t need to worry about stupid stuff like at a ‘normal’ high school,” said Kaleb, who recently moved to the Riverdale area from Niagara Falls. “Everyone here is really supportive and the teachers are great. I definitely think there should be a lot more schools like this everywhere.” Scarborough resident Gabby, who is in Grade 12 and will be graduating from the program next week, said she’s found the Triangle Program to be “overwhelmingly supportive.” “It’s been very amazing. It’s made coming to school less of a chore,” said Gabby, who said she’s made some good friends at the program. “It’s made me less fearful of the world and less fearful about the school environment. The battle isn’t over but it’s a good start.” Ralph, who is in Grade 11, joined the program in September 2015 and has found it to be a positive experience. “Her you can just be yourself,” said the West Toronto resident, adding the Triangle Program is a place where people are respectful of differences. “I really appreciate the supportive environment at Triangle and I’ve made some good friends here.”

elcome to summer Toronto! It officially arrived on Monday of this week, but judging by our recent hot weather it’s actually been here for awhile. And is there any better place to be in the summer than Toronto? We’ve got it all, as you can see by our Summer In The City feature story in this week’s paper. This coming first weekend of summer sees events such as the Luminato Festival, Taste of Toronto and the beginning of two weekends of top-level youth soccer action with the Robbie tournament. The Robbie International Soccer Tournament celebrates its 50th anniversary OuR ViEW this year, and it has grown from a small event with a few teams in 1967 to City boasts a Scarborough what is now the world’s largest cross-section youth soccer tournament for charity. of events It has raised more than $1.6 million for Cystic Fibrosis Canada in that time. The 50th version of the Robbie will see in excess of 300 teams playing in the festival (for boys and girls teams ages eight to 12) this weekend, and then the competitive tourney (for boys and girls teams 13 to 18) from July 1 to 3. And that’s not all. While Pride Month events have been taking place in Toronto throughout June, things really kick into gear this weekend as Pride Week begins. The week culminates in the Pride Parade July 3, which travels along Church Street from Bloor to Yonge-Dundas Square, but will also include the Trans March July 1 and the Dyke March July 2. Other large city-wide events in the next few weeks include the Honda Indy, which brings in racers and race fans from around the world, starting July 15. The Indy has been a Toronto tradition since 1986. Also, there’s the Toronto Caribbean Carnival starting July 28 and continuing through to the holiday Monday on Aug. 1. From humble beginnings back in 1967, the carnival has grown to become a massive tourist draw for Toronto. But not every event this summer is geared to huge crowds and tourists. There’s no end of community festivals set for our city, and whatever neighbourhood you are in, you will be sure to find something to do this summer in the city.

Big discussions, decisions planned for city’s future Next week Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee sits down for the last time before business at city hall winds down for the summer. But don’t expect a lazy, hazy meeting. Indeed, the June 28 gathering of Mayor Tory’s cabinet-like committee could be the most important one of the entire term. On the agenda: • a report revising upwards the cost of the single-stop Scarborough subway, that also sets the city’s transit-building agenda for the next two decades; • another one, looking at revenue tools beyond property taxes to pay for things like that transit plan; • a review of the city’s considerable real estate assets, taken with an eye to maximizing savings and revenues; • and the implementation of the Tenants First plan, to try and put right the city’s considerable portfolio of public housing.
david nickle the city To put it another way: the Executive Committee will be considering some of the most expensive initiatives under consideration by Toronto Council this term, at the same meeting as it examines some of the most ambitious measures to pay for those initiatives. It is not immediately obvious how Mayor Tory and his like-minded Executive Committee members will rise to those two challenges. So far, balancing ambition and reality has been an ungainly exercise for the team. Tory has been anxious to get down to the business of city-building, slow to get to the business of budget-pruning, and brashly confident in his ability to do both. His letter of instruction to the budget committee that met this week illus-
trates this perfectly. He has asked the committee to freeze expenditures for 2017, keep property taxes at or below the inflation rate. Efficiencies are to be found, alternate service delivery (contracting out) is to be considered… but ambitious new programs that form the backbone of Tory’s election-platform mandate are sacrosanct: transit and transportation, housing, and poverty reduction. That mission statement leaves very little room to wiggle – but the wiggle-room increases when the two questions of what we want and how we can afford it are asked and answered on different schedules. The June 28 Executive Committee meeting is a rare confluence, wherein everything is on the table at once. Do we want to build a massively expensive, marginally useful single-stop subway in Scarborough,
knowing that we will then have to consider raising all kinds of levies and taxes in order to afford it? We do need to repair our public housing, and that while other levels of government might offer some help, we’ll have to put up some share of the cost. How? Executive Committee members won’t have to answer all those questions immediately. But they will have to start talking about them in the same breath – in a way that until now mainly the mayor’s critics have done, and that the mayor and his supporters have characterized as simply nay-saying. At some point, the politics has to stop and the governance has to start. Next week, looking hard at both the dream and the problem, is as good a time as any to begin.

Toronto police honour fallen officer Russell ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Ryan Russell loved animals and policing. And on Tuesday, the Toronto police mounted unit named its newest member in honour of the Scarborough sergeant who was killed in the line of duty five years ago. “Ryan was an animal lover from day one ... and he also loved his work with the police service,” said Glenn Russell, Ryan’s father. “For him to be memorialized like this in such a vital unit, we are absolutely thrilled.” Police Chief Mark Saunders said
Ryan was a “fantastic man who exemplified all the great qualities in policing.” “We wanted to make sure that we could replicate the hard work and dedication, and the best way to do that is to pick one of our finest horses right here as we get to name him,” he said. Legacy “As Ryan’s legacy lives on, this horse will be doing tremendous work,” Saunders said of the fouryear-old Purebred Clydesdale named “Russell.” The horse is halfway through his year-long training and is expected to

Canada Day and citizenship court are great traditions in East York There is a lot to be said for using the “garden” metaphor to describe a healthy community. It takes a lot tending by many hands to make a neighbourhood a beautiful place to live in and no garden ever reaches its prime in one season. If you want to see a living example of this metaphor in action, you need look no further than East York Canada Day. The seed for this wonderful community institution was planted 59 years ago by True Davidson and at the time everyone thought it was a bad idea. Local wisdom had it that nobody would be around on a summertime long weekend to participate, and True would be there by herself. Well True proved the critics wrong. While it was a small affair held on the lawn of the East York Board of Education offices on Cosburn Avenue,
joe cooper watchdog it was successful enough to be continued. So from there it grew, eventually moving to the grounds of East York Collegiate, and soon someone suggested that there be a parade. That parade became a centrepiece for the entire event. It was a place where members of the military past and present, local businesses, municipal government departments and East York citizens could publicly express their pride in being Canadian. The East York school board, the library board, firefighters, and other municipal workers had floats and marched proudly in the parade. They did so in order that they could express their appreciation for being there
to serve the people of their community. The event became so big it had to move to its present location in what was originally known as Cedarvale Park, before being re-named for Stan Wadlow. Another event that takes place on Canada Day is the citizenship ceremony. At 7:30 a.m. on July 1 at the East York Civic Centre, the “sunrise court” will award citizenship to 50 new Canadians. All are invited to welcome these new citizens into our national community. People can also re-affirm their own citizenship by reciting the oath at the opening ceremonies of East York Canada Day at noon at Stan Wadlow Park. See you there. Topham Park women’s softball is celebrating its 30th season Play is now underway for the 2016 season of the Topham Park Women’s Softball League, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The age of the players in the league ranges between 21 and 76, with four teams taking part. Ten of the league’s players have been with it right from the start, including two of the founding members Betty Hicks and Pat Ootes. Not surprisingly, there are several mother-daughter combinations among the league’s players. This season, the Topham Park Women’s Softball League is playing its games out of Corvetee Public School in Scarborough. Prior to this season they played at East York’s George Webster Public School, but the diamond there now has portables on it. It was back in the spring of 1986 that the league started as a place for female players over the bantam age to play

Tory backs $68M road safety plan Pedestrian and cycling safety advocates are fuming, but a road safety plan meant to curb the spate of deaths was approved in principle by the city’s public works and infrastructure committee this week. The plan still needs council’s full approval to become a reality, and has the backing of Mayor John Tory and public works chair Jaye Robinson. Groups like Walk Toronto counter it has too little funding attached – $68 million spread out over five years – to make a huge difference. A 38-year-old woman was Toronto’s 18th pedestrian fatality of the year after a motorist in a SUV jumped the curb near Rogers Centre last week, striking her food cart. are looking good for Pride wbuses
Both TTC and GO Transit unveiled specially adorned buses in celebration of Pride Month. Since the beginning of June, Pride-wrapped TTC buses have served the 94 Wellesley route – which travels

Expect to see more of the special buses in service as the days tick down to the grand Pride parade, scheduled for the upcoming long weekend. columnisT heaPs Praise on TTc wTribune
A Chicago Tribune column by Mary Wisniewski praises Toronto for running the third busiest transit system on the continent and sees it as inspiration for the flagging Chicago Transit Authority. While Toronto has barely half the amount of rapid transit lines and less than half the stations of its sister city, it boasts over a million more daily trips, including 68 per cent of morning commuters making use of transit compared to less than 30 per cent of Chicagoans.
Wisniewski also heaps praise on Toronto’s tendency of late to tie development with transit building. But it’s not all praise: she notes the TTC is “oddly inadequate”, at least when it comes to our 8 a.m. Sunday openings. roof rePairs haPPen aT baThursT sTaTion The work taking place at both the main and secondary entrances to Bathurst station isn’t expected to disrupt service, although riders will have to deal with barricades on the bus platform, as well as a “nonhazardous” odour emanating when liquid asphalt is poured out. And they’ll have to board shuttle buses instead of the regular 511 streetcars. Further south on Bathurst Street, the College Street intersection remains closed until July 12 for track repairs and road work.

Robbie tourney set to launch two weekends of soccer action NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Toronto FC has a close connection with this year’s huge Robbie soccer tournament on tap over the next two weekends (June 25 and 26; and July 1 to 3), and which is marking its 50th anniversary. And the other TFC connection is this year’s honourary chair, Dwayne De Rosario, one of the best players to ever suit up in Major League Soccer and for the Canadian national team. While he may be the honourary chair, he’s taking it as much more than a figurehead role, organizing

pionship day – $5 for adults and $2 for seniors and youth 10 to 18 (free for U-10). For their 50th anniversary, Robbie organizers already know the size of the cheque they intend to hand over to Cystic Fibrosis Canada – $50,000. Including their first year when they handed over $60.52 to the national charitable organization, they’ve now upped their grand total to about $1.7 million. A large reason they’ve been able
to donate that much, besides the dozens of volunteers, are the referees who have always worked for free. Robbie chair Mike Ellis estimates that “approximately half of what we’ve been able to donate to CF over the years is because of the referees who contribute their time without charge.” The tournament will use about 25 venues – all in Scarborough except for the Cherry Beach fields.
