East York Canada Day citizenship court first in country

East York residents can once again honour Canada Day by taking an oath of Canadian citizenship on Monday, July 1. In East York this year, there will be two chances for Canadians to reaffirm their citizenship on Canada Day. The first chance will be alongside new Canadians, at the Canada Day Citizenship Court at the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave. Approximately 50 people will become Canadian citizens by taking oaths during the ceremony, which starts at 7:30 a.m. Due to the ceremony’s early start time, people receiving Canadian citizenship in East York will also earn another honour. “There’s no better day to become a Canadian citizen than on Canada Day, and there’s no better place than East York to become one, because you’ll be first in the entire country to become Canadian citizens on this Canada Day,” said Michael McCleery, president of the East York Race Relations and Multiculturalism Institute, which sponsors the annual court.
