East York Canada Day citizenship court first in country

Canada Day across the city is full of opportunities to get together to celebrate our nation’s birthday.

We‘ve prepared a package of city-wide and local events to guide you.

East York residents can once again honour Canada Day by taking an oath of Canadian citizenship on Monday, July 1.

In East York this year, there will be two chances for Canadians to reaffirm their citizenship on Canada Day. The first chance will be alongside new Canadians, at the Canada Day Citizenship Court at the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave. Approximately 50 people will become Canadian citizens by taking oaths during the ceremony, which starts at 7:30 a.m.

Due to the ceremony’s early start time, people receiving Canadian citizenship in East York will also earn another honour.

“There’s no better day to become a Canadian citizen than on Canada Day, and there’s no better place than East York to become one, because you’ll be first in the entire country to become Canadian citizens on this Canada Day,” said Michael McCleery, president of the East York Race Relations and Multiculturalism Institute, which sponsors the annual court.

East End Arts launched at East York Civic Centre REBECCA FIELD rfield@insidetoronto.com Tuesday was the official launch of East End Arts at East York Civic Centre – the sixth official Local Arts Service Organization (LASO) in Toronto.

LASOs receive municipal funding and “provide services aligned with those of cultural services at both the policy and operational levels,” according to the website.

East End Arts will try to bring community and arts together, said Cindy Rozeboom, the managing director who will be helping bring art out onto the streets.

“There’s a lot of artists in eastern Toronto, but we don’t have a structure,” Rozeboom said. “A lot of people go out to the west end to do stuff, so

we’re trying to change that a little bit.”

Rozeboom plans to spend her first four months as managing director networking with artists and assessing how programs already in place, such as the Beach Jazz Festival and various art walks, can be represented better.

Neighbourhood inspired “Eventually we’ll come up with some new programming, but probably not for a year or two,” said Rozeboom, who said she hopes to eventually have something like an online depository where people can submit photos, paintings, poetry or other forms of art inspired by areas in their neighbourhood.

Fragedakis were at the event, which joins their four wards together under the premise of helping local artists in the community.

“The Don River is wide, but we have moved everything across to the east side,” said Fletcher to applause in a speech at the event.

Fletcher went on to use Bruce Mackey, creator of the show Degrassi and a former resident on Degrassi Street in Riverdale, as an example of the kind of community arts work prevalent in the east end. “That started right there with a great communityminded person, so I think we can create great things in our city and our east end,” said Fletcher.

Police issue suspicious man warning Police are alerting the public to a suspicious motorist offering rides to kids in the Kingston Road and Main Street area.

Police said a man driving a blue minivan spoke to two 10-year-old boys and offered

them rides near Osborne and Lyall avenues at 8:15 a.m. last Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21.

The boys ignored the man and kept walking to school, and the man drove off.

The man is white, 40 to 50

years old with dark eyebrows and dark brown hair worn in a ponytail. He wore dark sunglasses.

The possible closures of Toronto Police Service’s 54 and 13 divisions, ideas floated to help save costs, were officially decided against during this month’s Toronto Police

Services Board meeting.

“They looked at the cost savings and the impact on services, and concluded that this was not the right direction to take,” said Ward 31 Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis, who added she’s pleased with the decision.

his Monday, Canada will celebrate its 146th birthday. In honour of that special day, The East York Mirror has compiled a list of ways to celebrate the founding of this great nation.

The list, which you can find on page 8, is more of a launching pad for community engagement – a way to connect with your neighbours, your immediate community and in some way Torontonians as whole.

It’s a chance to get out and enjoy the city: Perhaps you’re interested in one of the bigger celebrations such as the East York parade and picnic at Stan Wadlow park or the events in the Beach.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to stay home, why not call up a few friends and neighbours and host a barbecue.

We have tons of great recipes you can try.

Neighbourhoods across the city from Parkdale to North York, Etobicoke to Scarborough, East York to Bloor West have started community events, street parties and neighbourhood clean-ups and garage sales all in an attempt to bring people together.

The same energy that goes into these communitybuilding events can easily be focused on Canada Day. In this issue, we take the idea of celebrating Canadiana with a few things you may have not even considered - although very Canadian: Learn about Canada’s history and the War of 1812 - did you know Canada Day was once called Dominion Day; watch the annual Robbie Soccer Tournament, which happens every Canada Day weekend; enjoy some ribs at any of the three ribfests taking place in the city; say cheers with Canadian drinks while eating Canadian food.

Really, what Canada Day is all about is being Canadian and all the great things this country has to offer. People from around the world immigrate here to enjoy a multicultural society focused on equality. So in whatever way you decide to celebrate Canada Day, keep your fellow Canadians in mind and enjoy the nation’s birthday.

Canada Day celebrations a great East York tradition

F

rankly it’s hard to believe that we’re coming up on the first day of summer, given how cool it’s been lately.

I don’t think I’ve seen so many sweaters being worn during the day in the middle of June as this year.

If there is one thing that this weather won’t keep from happening, it’s the annual East York Canada Day. It was back in 1957 that True Davidson came up with the idea for the celebration and at the time everyone thought it was a bad idea.

Why would anyone hang around on a summer’s day to participate, they said, and predicted that True would be there all by herself. Well, True again proved the critics wrong.

While it was a small affair held on the lawn of the East York Board of Education offices on Cosburn Avenue, it was successful enough to be continued.

So from there it grew,

joe cooper watchdog eventually moving to the grounds of East York Collegiate, and then someone suggested that there should be a parade.

Parade Today, that parade is the centrepiece for the entire event.

Back then the parade was made up of members of the military past and present, local businesses, municipal government departments and East York citizens who could publicly express their pride in being Canadian.

Consider the fact that the East York School Board, the library board, the firefighters, and other municipal workers had floats and marched in the parade proudly.

They did so because they were proud to serve the

people of their community.

The event finally had to move to its present location, which was originally known as Cedarvale Park, and has now been renamed for Stan Wadlow.

Thanks to True Davidson’s genius of local organization and commonsense management, the event was completely managed by the community, while remaining under the sponsorship and protection of local council.

As a result it has always been a true East York institution, completely run by local volunteers and community groups.

Despite a truly misguided attempt by the City of Toronto to take over the event in the early years of amalgamation, the institution has remained firmly in the hands of East York.

The point is that our community now has a wonderful summer event thanks to more than 50 years of hard work that has

been put into it by local citizens.

Local businesses, service groups, volunteer organizations, hobby clubs, and even community boosters should keep up this tradition of community involvement in some way.

As always, celebration will feature live entertainment, public booths under tents, the always popular bingo tent, and the great fireworks display.

What a great way to tell East York that you support the community and that you provide goods and services for your neighbours to benefit from.

How about putting together a car or a float that says simply “I am proud to be part of East York”!

“The reaffirmation is something that’s not done in other parts of the city, but we have done it here for a long time, and people like it.”

E v e r y C a n a d a D a y, McCleery said he takes the oath of Canadian citizenship alongside fellow East Yorkers.

“It is just an opportunity to reaffirm your citizenship, and essentially to be grateful for where we are both as a country, and where we are as an East York community,” he said.

Parade, picnic fireworks in East York East York residents will celebrate Canada’s birthday in style again this year, at what might be the longestrunning Canada Day party in the country.

The 56th East York Canada Day celebration begins early and runs late on July 1.

The event features a parade, fireworks, rides, games, shopping, live entertainment and more.

“There’s lots of things happening.

It’s a full day, believe me,” said Don Duvall, a member of the East York Toronto Canada Day Corporation, which hosts the event.

“Several years ago, we were highlighted by Heritage Canada as one of the most successful Canada Day events, long-running,” he added.

“We can’t verify this, but as far as we know, we are the longest running Canada Day event in Canada. We were part of Dominion Day for a great many years before Canada Day was ever thought of, and it’s all part and parcel of the same event.”

Approximately 50,000 to 60,000 people are expected to attend this year’s celebration, which begins with a parade.

The first phase of the parade, a motorcade featuring antique and classic cars, leaves the East York Town Centre, 45 Overlea Blvd., at 9:30 a.m. The motorcade will pay tribute to Gordon Hazzlett, author of several antique car books, and a long-standing member of the organizing committee and East York, who died earlier this year.

At 10 a.m., the parade will pass Dieppe Park, 455 Cosburn Ave., where local organizations and groups will join in.

As the parade passes the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave., East York’s Legions and pipe bands will join, along with military vehicles.

The parade ends outside Stan Wadlow Park, 888 Cosburn Ave., where the rest of the day’s celebrations take place.

Also, the Toronto East Rotary Club’s fifth annual Ribfest in East York takes place from noon to 8 p.m. on July 1, at Whistler’s Grille, 995 Broadview Ave. Admission is free.

“It’s a fun day. It’s a nice place to come to meet friends, have a drink,” said Jeff Rayman, Ribfest co-chair.

TTC calls for report on streetcars-only proposal for King Street RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC’s political body took the first step toward one day reserving King Street West for streetcar and bicycle traffic.

At its Monday meeting, the TTC’s board of commissioners voted unanimously to support chair Karen Stintz and call for a report on the feasibility of making King and

perhaps Queen Street West streetcar-exclusive during the morning rush hour period.

A motion introduced by Stintz asks for TTC staff to collaborate with the city to address specific details of the proposal, which includes examining boundaries, means of enforcement, costs for implementation and other questions.

Following the meeting,

she said the study, which will also require consent from the city’s public works committee to go ahead, was necessary to determine how to serve ridership on King St. W., which could increase significantly due to new residential development in Liberty Village and other neighbourhoods in the King corridor. “At this point it’s very preliminary in our analysis,” Stintz said. “We

just know that we will have so many more riders we will need to accommodate.”

While Stintz last week suggested a pilot morning rush hour ban of all nontransit vehicle traffic could take place by the 2015 Pan American Games, but refused to commit to a timeline for implementation until the report is complete so as not to prejudice its findings.

The province should back up recent comments by the provincial transportation minister and build a new light rail line completely underground, says a Scarborough councillor.

Taking issue with Minister of Transportation Glen Murray’s contention in early June that the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line (LRT) is a subway – since the majority of its planned route runs underground below Eglinton Avenue West – ScarboroughAgincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande said the entire 19-kilometre line should be built below street-level.

At last Tuesday’s meeting of Scarborough Community Council, Del Grande introduced a motion calling for all of the Crosstown, in light of Murray’s remarks, to run underground.

Currently, the line is slated to emerge from a tunnel east of Don Mills Road before continuing at street-level to its eastern terminus at Kennedy station.

The motion was adopted by a majority of the 10-member council.

Politicians support wOne-third transit funding of all elected officials in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) have signed a pledge in support of better transit funding, says CivicAction.

Officially known as the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, the group announced last week that 116 politicians – 31 of them from Toronto including Premier Kathleen Wynne – have signed the pledge calling on the province to adopt Metrolinx’s recent recommendations for new taxes and user fees.

The work is expected to continue until the first week of August. A number of changes are required to TTC service in the area to accommodate the construction including the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston Road streetcar routes ending at Queen Street East and Kingston Road; and no westbound bus service on Kingston between Victoria Park and Queen Street East.

Mayor’s bluster costly in negotiations with province T

his past Monday might have been a good day for Mayor Rob Ford. At noon, our mayor screwed up his courage, ventured onto the roof of Toronto City Hall, where for the first time he attended a flag raising for Pride Week, and read some kind words about his gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered constituents.

It was a mayoral duty he’d shirked until now, and it was a good sign for the city’s leadership.

Vital duty

If only he hadn’t just hours later dropped the ball so thoroughly on a more vital mayoral duty: negotiating a crucially important financial deal with the provincial government.

These things come up from time to time. The province makes a financial shift that’s not to the city’s advantage on transit or housing or Ontario Works,

and city officials sit down with their provincial counterparts to work out some details in such a way as to balance the books.

That didn’t happen this time, when the provincial government set out to realign the city’s finances in such a way as to immediately cost the city $50 million in 2014, and a total of $150 million by 2016.

By Monday afternoon, after a meeting with Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa, the mayor had branded the provincial government as a profligate enemy of the city, unmindful of the plight of Toronto’s “most vulnerable,” and worst of all, jealous of Mayor Ford’s fiscal record.

“I’m getting punished for running an efficient government,” he wailed.

“They found out Mayor

Ford can turn the city around and these people can’t.”

Then he threatened to continue with a modest tax increase, a 10 per cent cut to the land transfer tax, and simply cut homeless shelters and other social services, and pin it on the province.

Bemused frustration

The minister needn’t have said anything; Ford had tangled himself up well enough on his own.

He and his brother have spent the past year boasting about real and imagined savings that they’ve found the taxpayers, while city finance staff continue to find dramatic, seven-

figure surpluses each year.

To buttress his reelection bid, the mayor has promised to keep taxes low and take a chunk out of one of the city’s main revenue sources, the land transfer tax.

Any Ontario voter casually acquainted with city hall would be forgiven for concluding that the city doesn’t need their

The city is well run and its books are in order?

Splendid. It shouldn’t be necessary to continue to prop up the city’s social housing with provincial funding, then.

The city should end up ahead, no longer having to repay an old $200-plus million loan from the province – never mind that the city had been considering it off the books since 2005.

And even if it’s not...

Mayor Ford, with his very partisan bluster, hasn’t done anything to convince otherwise.

Indeed, in this matter he’s been Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s best friend.

York Farmers Market wEast The East York Farmers Market takes place every Tuesday at the East York Civic Centre from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to a release, Toronto Animal Services works hard to keep up with the high intake of cats into its shelters and tries to find good homes for as many cats as possible.
