Former Borough of East York Mayor , member of Metropolitan Toronto Council and MP Alan Redway is hosting a book signing for his recently released book Governing Toronto: Bringing back the city that worked. The book contrasts the postamalgamation megacity of Toronto that came into being by provincial government decree in 1998 to the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, citing that some refer to the 1954-1998 period to as Toronto’s “Golden Age.” Redway will be available to sign copies of the book at the Toronto East General Hospital on Wednesday, March 25 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The signing by Redway will take place in the Coxwell Lobby of TEGH, which is at 825 Coxwell Ave.

East York man among Pan Am Games Torch Relay runners CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The Pan Am Torch was unveiled Monday at the Ontario Science Centre along with the names of the first torchbearers who will be carrying the flame across the country. “It will be seen by millions. It will bring Canadians together,” said Saad Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games (TO2015). About 3,000 torchbearers in total are expected to complete, on average, a 200-metre segment during the 41-day torch relay. Dignitaries in attendance included Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and TO2015 Board Chair David Peterson, who each announced one of the first nine torchbearers. East York resident Michael Crawford was selected as a torchbearer after he applied online and wrote in his submission about how integral sports is to him. The mentality of sports about having the will to win helped him overcome an illness he experienced six years ago. His children are also into sports with his 12-year-old daughter being
an avid snowboarder as well as his 14-year-old son who recently won a medal in a national snowboarding competition in Quebec. “Sports is a very important thing in our family,” said Crawford, adding that it helps build confidence to do anything. Crawford added that he was honoured to be chosen to run in the torch relay along with the other worthy recipients announced that day. Triathlete Simon Whitfield, who won medals in both the Olympic and Pan Am Games, will also be one of the torchbearers as he was in the Vancouver Olympic Games. “I felt so much responsibility for something that was so important,” recalled Whitfield, adding the torch relay really brings a sense of community. Thousands of torchbearers will carry the torch through 130 communities with the relay in Canada starting May 30 and making its final stop on July 10 at the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Metroland Media is a Signature Supporter of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay.

Dearly loved by his family, Viv said Neil was also someone well-liked by all he met regardless of political persuasion. “He liked people and people liked him,” she said. “He’ll certainly be missed by his family and his friends and the people in the community. Everybody seemed to like him.” Gene Domagala, a local historian, shared many great times with Young and said he will miss his friend of 40 years. Domagala said Young was someone who had a wry sense of humour and a deep desire to help others. “He was a very helpful individual. He was involved in many projects. Anything I can think of, he was there,” said Domagala. A viewing and funeral service for Young took place Wednesday, March 11 at Sherrin Funeral Home on Kingston Road in the Upper Beach. He went on to serve as the MP for the former Beaches-Woodbine riding from 1988 to 1993 before being defeated by Liberal candidate Maria Minna. After retiring, he kept busy working as a consultant on issues impacting those with disabilities. He also continued to serve on the BeachesEast York NDP riding association. Young enjoyed travelling, golfing, gardening, cooking and working in his workshop, especially with his grandsons. Diversity Our Strength – it’s Toronto’s motto. It’s also the name of the newest Metroland Media Toronto online portal. Launched this week, www. insidetoronto.com/diversity is a growing compilation of news, events and resources dedicated to reaching Toronto’s diverse communities. The city is home to people who speak more than 140 languages, half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada and the city is a place where nearly half of residents’ first language is something other than English. “Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world,” said Paul Futhey, project lead and editor with Metroland Media Toronto. “It’s important that we find new ways to present our content to our readers.” Included in the website: w NEWS: Metroland Media Toronto’s news coverage of Toronto’s diverse communities: available in a general feed and also accessible in sections based on world geography. A world news feed is also available. w EVENTS: an events section with photo galleries of recent cultural celebrations as well as links to upcoming multicultural events. w RESOURCES: a section that includes some helpful tips for newcomers to the city, key statistics and a call for directory submissions. As the site grows, we’re looking for significant community involvement, whether it’s news tips, event submissions, or community organizations and cultural centres creating online profiles to be part of a directory. “Our goal is always to find ways to better connect people to their communities,” Futhey said. “We want the community to be a part of this.” Questions? East Toronto has lost one of its finest: former Member of Parliament Neil David Young. The federal representative for the former Beaches and BeachesWoodbine ridings from 1980 to 1993, Young died Saturday, March 7, at Toronto East General Hospital at the age of 78. He leaves four children: Neil, Leslie (Steve), Moira and Fraser (Cecelia); five grandchildren Daniel, Marshall, Drew, Lucas and Elyse; siblings Grace (Keith), Ron, Dorothy, Allan (Mary) as well as many family members throughout Scotland, Canada and the United States. Scotty, as he was affectionately known to many, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Aug. 28, 1936 and immigrated to Canada in 1957 with his brother, Ron. He later met and married his wife of 52 years, Vivien (Viv). The couple raised a family on Wheeler Avenue before recently moving to a smaller place near Queen Street and Woodbine Avenue. “Neil had a great sense of humour. He was a very compassionate person,” Viv said. “He loved fighting for people and just felt no wrong should be allowed to pass.” Viv said she knew Neil was a keeper from the very start when they were at a party and he greeted an elderly “grandmother” who was there. They married shortly thereafter and didn’t leave each other’s side for more than five decades. When he first arrived in Canada, Young worked as a tool and die maker. His first foray into politics was when he successfully organized a local union within the United Electrical Workers Union. He eventually became a shop steward and then a business agent within the union. In 1976, he ran unsuccessfully to represent Toronto Ward 9, finishing in sixth place. The following year, he was nominated as the NDP candidate in the Beaches federal riding and two years later lost the race to Progressive Conservative Robin Richardson.

Lewis Foundation and Toronto East General Hospital. Current Beaches-East York MP Matthew Kellway met Young when he joined the Beaches-East York NDP riding association. “He wanted to ensure the conversations and his work on social justice remained active,” said Kellway. “I turned to Neil for advice about how to do that job, how to keep the beliefs the NDP holds dear alive in the minds of the voters in the community.” Regardless of party affiliation, Kellway said Young was someone everyone who knew him loved. “He was well respected and well liked. He was a lovely man,” said Kellway, adding even in Young’s last few years of life when his health was failing, he kept laughing and smiling. “He was a man whose sense of humour never failed him,” he said. Former Beaches-East York MPP Michael Prue worked closely with Young for several years and was saddened to hear of the passing of his friend and colleague. “He never gave up the fight. He was one of those men who loved everybody, except at election time,” chuckled Prue. “He was a gentle soul and much loved. People really loved him. He was just a kind and wonderful man.” Longtime Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis had only great things to say about Young. “He came out of the trade union movement and he was a strong advocate for working people. He understood the struggle to earn a living and raise a family. When Neil got up to speak to a room he had everyone up on their feet. He was compassionate, generous and warm.” Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher said Young played an important role in supporting the United Church as a housing and service provider in the city’s east end. “He was part of the social movement in the east end. Neil had a great set of values, a great heart and a fighting spirit.”

Crosswalks do not possess magical powers
H
ave you ever driven a vehicle on Toronto’s streets only to have a squirrel dart out in front of you? It’s a heart stopping moment where your instincts click in and your foot heads for the brake pedal. The little creature either wakes up to its impending doom and darts back to safety, or it continues on as if it is oblivious to the fate that is bearing down upon it and often it ends badly. A squirrel’s lack of sense about traffic can be traumatic enough for drivers when dealing with our traffic. However, when human beings begin to show the same behaviour as a squirrel by darting into traffic, that is another matter altogether. For some strange reason it seems that a significant number of people have lost all sense of danger about vehicular traffic.
joe cooper watchdog It seems that every time that I head out in my automobile I have to be on the lookout for such people. These people dart across the road in random locations along the road and often without even looking. What’s amazing about this behaviour is that the faster cars are moving and more congestion there is, the number of these people seems to actually increase. To make matters even more complicated, I have seen far too many people actually abandoning sidewalks and walking on the roadways of busy streets. It’s almost as if they are so used to being in some sort of vehicle that they want to join the flow of traffic. Even at intersections, where people are advised to cross, you will see people
walk across the road as if there is a crosswalk or traffic light when there is none. Speaking of crosswalks, here many people seem to think that that these crossings possess magical powers. You see pedestrians go up to a crosswalk, push the button to make the lights flash, then immediately step into traffic. traffic It seems that these people somehow expect traffic, no matter how busy or dense it is, to instantly stop for them. They often do, with great screeching of brakes and more than the occasional rear end collision. Corners with traffic lights are no guarantee of better behaviour on the part of many pedestrians. Again I’ve seen an amazing number of people who either stand right on the edge of the sidewalk
or even out on the street, impatient for the light to change. Likewise the city’s pedestrians are some of the worst scofflaws who ignore the “do not walk” signal and are still in the intersection when the light is red. Worse are those who make a mad dash across the street just as the light is turning to red so they won’t have to stand still for a few moments. The most terrifying group of people for motorists are those who do all of these things at night and most often while wearing dark clothing. Again, I can understand the squirrel’s lack of understanding of the danger of our streets, but why have people come to be so reckless with their lives? As part of the March Safe campaign, police are pledging to pay special attention not only to jaywalkers, but also vehicles making conditions unsafe for law-abiding pedestrians. According to a news release for the campaign, at least half of all fatal collisions involve pedestrians, of which there were 31 in 2014. “All officers will be paying particular attention to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit traffic violations that may jeopardize pedestrian safety,” reads the release. Tory finds leverage in Mulcair It is a good thing former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the non-partisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed. Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s Official Opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre that Toronto was his and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government. To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area over the next eight years; the minimum wage would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax. This is powerful stuff. Affordable daycare and a
david nickle the city higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city. The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system. Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list. Tory and Mulcair met Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page. Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and enshrined by the Conservative

government. It was more, and that was good. And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada. Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so. Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes. But that is all right. Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely prime minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. And that gives Tory some leverage, in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little. Dave Nickle is The Mirror’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday.

Firefighters battle a blaze at a house on Gerrard Street near Greenwood Avenue Monday. A man is his fifties died in the fire.
Man dies in Gerrard fire ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Fire officials say there were no smoke detectors in a Leslieville home where a two-alarm blaze broke out Monday evening, claiming a man’s life. Firefighters were called to 1305 Gerrard St. E., a two-storey semi-detached house, at 8 p.m. Capt. Mike Strapko said a man, reportedly in his 50s, was found by the basement doorway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire was extinguished by 8:22 p.m. “Fire crews afterwards went through the house and determined they didn’t see any evidence of any smoke alarms on any of the floors,” Strapko said. There were 14 fire trucks and 55 firefighters on scene. Damage is estimated at $80,000. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Retired baker ‘Tom’ Dimovitis remembered as hardworking man ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Athanasios “Tom” Dimovitis was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to caring for his children. That’s how the 85-year-old retired baker and longtime East York resident is being remembered this week. Dimovitis died in hospital March 11, a day after he was hit by a car out front of his house at 452 Mortimer Ave. “He was just such a selfless person,” Dimovitis’ daughter Joanne Clyne said. “He was a very good parent and a very hardworking individual.” Dimovitis had lived in East York since immigrating to Canada from Greece in 1948. He resided on Mortimer with his wife Evangelia for the past 40 years. “Both he and my mother were very simple people who dedicated their lives to their children,” Clyne said. “My dad was a baker from the time he was a child in Greece during the war.”
Dimovitis, his family says, was following his daily early-morning routine of walking to the Danforth for coffee when he was struck. Clyne said her dad was usually awake early because he was used to working bakers’ hours but made sure not to wake anybody up in the house. “He liked his freedom, he liked to walk a lot,” she added. Police said the senior was crossing Mortimer west of Linsmore Crescent when a westbound Chevrolet Cruze struck him at 6:45 a.m. March 10. Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe said no charges have been laid against the 76-yearold male driver. “The investigation is ongoing,” he said. Dimovitis was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital where he died at 4:23 p.m. the following day after being taken off life support. His funeral was held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on March 17.

Alam credits his father for passing down volunteering values >>>from page 1 tinues to grow. Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, he’s covered every aspect of community service available to him since arriving in Canada from Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2004. He is joined by his wife and his three children in his community endeavours to continue and bolster his father’s values. Alam’s attraction to Canada was because of the “diversity and respect of human rights not seen in any other place,” he said. “It was not for myself, but for my kids,” Alam explained. “They have opportunities to learn from different cultures and nationalities in a very unbiased environment.” Alam’s community service has no barriers. Since his arrival he’s been a member of the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office, where he helps families find jobs, tackles social problems such as bullying and counters domestic violence with education, workshops and

community programs. “He’s on the forefront in strongly advocating against family violence and enlightening vulnerable groups about accessing the resources available in the community,” said Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office Executive Director Ahmed Hussain in a statement announcing the award.
He was the school council secretary at Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute for three years before taking on the role of co-chair for another three years. Shortly after he joined the school council at Thorncliffe Park Public School. Alam continued his community service by joining Toronto Police 53 Division’s Community Police Liaison Committee where he was elected vice-chair five times and has worked with police to increase neighbourhood safety. He’s also chair of a subdivision of the CPLC, the Thorncliffe Safety Committee. “I can honestly say that he is genuine in his belief in the values of community and partnership,” said nominator Nadine Hare in a statement. Alam is also an active member of the Canadian Association of Pakistani Origin (CAPO) and frequently assists in community development initiatives at home

and abroad, including fundraising for tsunami, earthquake and flood relief in Pakistan and the Phillipines. Alam was very pleased to learn he would be receiving the 23rd Annual Agnes Macphail Award. But he said his motivation isn’t personal glory, it’s making sure that people in his community have access to available opportunities to succeed. Many of his initiatives include Ravita, a program started in 2012 designed to promote anti-bullying healthy activities for
youth and Neighbour’s Night Out, a community event where residents can meet and greet each other over various activities. The ceremony will also feature Westwood Middle School Grade 6 student and 2015 Agnes Macphail Public Speaking Contest winner Eden Bridge-Cook and the VOCA Chorus of Toronto. Guest speaker Michael Prue will also deliver a keynote speech about Agnes Macphail, promoting the values that she and Alam both share, despite differences in time and place.

Alam will receive his award at the awards ceremony March 24 at 7 p.m. at the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave.
