PUBLIC SPACES FOCUS OF WALK: Caroline Moumouris, left, Angela Lam, Georgina Tsilogianis and Jonathan Friedman join Jane’s Walk leader Neluka Leanage in the Danforth and Broadview avenues area Saturday morning for a walk themed ‘Assessing the Fitness of our Public Spaces’.
A woman is dead after a fire ripped through an apartment above a store on the Danforth early Monday. Fire crews were called to 1294 Danforth Ave. (near Greenwood Avenue) at 2:14 a.m. and found flames and smoke coming from a third-floor apartment window when they arrived. Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said firefighters located a woman’s lifeless body in a bedroom while “in the process of fighting the fire.” “We extinguished the fire pretty quickly,” he said, noting a “smoke alarm was sounding at the time” that firefighters arrived. The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the two-alarm blaze. Damage is estimated at $150,000.

Police warn of increase in bike thefts JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
Fifty-five Division police are reporting a number of recent bike thefts throughout the division. Investigators report the thefts occur both in the day time and the evening and often times bikes are removed from sheds. In some instances, bicycles were stolen from a shed minutes after being placed there by their owners. Underground parking garages have also been targeted. Police said the thefts are likely due to the better weather and more availability of bikes. Here are a few tips for to
avoid having your bicycle stolen and/or what to do if it is: • Register your bike with the Toronto Police Service at https://webapp1.torontopolice.on.ca/BicycleRegistry • Re c o rd yo u r s e r i a l number and descriptions (with pics) of your bike; • Invest in a good lock for your bike...and use it, even if you’re just running a quick errand; • Lock your bike to your shed and also lock your shed. Const. Jon Morrice, 55 Division’s Crime Prevention Officer, said he actually locks the tire of his bike to the frame, then locks both his bike to his shed and locks his shed. • Don’t lock your bike
to flimsy objects, bushes, wooden fences and so on. Anyone with information about bike thefts in the community should contact police immediately at 416808-5500, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.co, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637). Tips can also be left on facebook at https:// www.facebook.com/ TorontoPolice. There’s also a free Crime Stoppers Mobile App on iTunes, Google Play or Blackberry App World.

City’s largest clothing bank now in a bigger facility New Circles serves residents of Flemingdon Park, Victoria Village, Thorncliffe Park and Crescent Town DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com New Circles helps put clothes on the backs of 13,000 people each year and has celebrated its 10th anniversary and relocation to a bigger facility that will help serve more people. New Circles, now located in southeast North York on Bartley Drive, is the city’s largest clothing bank, having distributed approximately 200,000 items of clothing last year. It serves residents of Flemingdon Park and Victoria Village in North York and Thorncliffe Park and Crescent Town in East York. Clients do not pay. “I really want to congratulate you,” said EtobicokeNorth MPP Shafiq Qaadri, parliamentary assistant to Premier Kathleen Wynne. He
was speaking at a celebratory event Thursday, April 30 at the not-for-profit service agency’s facility that had more than 100 supporters pack its clothing bank, including Toronto Mayor John Tory and other dignitaries. “This type of institution really takes a village of individuals who felt the need and not just reacted and said let’s write a cheque, but have really come together to form a really remarkable institution.” New Circles is the brainchild of founding director Cindy Blakely who was a social worker at the Toronto District School Board and saw first-hand the effects of poverty on people. “When people’s basic needs aren’t met, it is overwhelming and all-consuming. It makes it impossible to function,” Blakely said at the event. “I

recognized that some pure joy, even a small injection of it, can serve as a real morale booster as well as help practically.” This led to the creation of the Holiday Angel program in 1996. The seasonal matching program has donors buy gifts, clothing and household items for clients. It continues today. Then came New Circles in January 2005. The organization started in Flemingdon Park Plaza, fully run by volunteers. The organization now employs six individuals and has 140 volunteers. It operGET UP TO
ates in a 10,000-square-foot facility. “Have we grown? You bet. The first year, we saw 775 people. In 2014, it was 13,000,” Blakely said. “At New Circles, any time a new client walks in through the door – you’re going to love this Mr. Tory – we attempt to launch them on their very own smart track.” Clients come seasonally (four times per year) to shop for their and their family’s clothing using a voucher system. The organization recycles approximately 15,000 pounds of clothing per month, both new and used. Besides a clothing bank, the organization: • offers job skills training; • runs seasonal giving programs such as the Holiday Angels;
10,000 +
• runs an annual prom boutique that outfitted nearly 500 students this year and holds teen shopping days; • hosts a men’s suit event once a year to help outfit men for the workplace and special occasions; • and runs its Seniors Mobile Mall, visiting lowincome retirement residences with clothing for seniors. It operates on an $800,000 annual budget. Tory said more organizations such as this one are needed in the city. New Circles, for example, started with an idea by someone who had a heart to help others. “Look at the place that we’re in now. Look at the programs that run in here that do everything from helping people get jobs to helping people with their clothing, and most of all, helping people have a bit
0FINANCING %
of confidence, a bit of selfrespect, and to think what we want them to think, which is that this is a country you want to be in,” he said. Tory said the most important issue facing city council is the growing gap between those who are comfortable and those who are not, particularly newcomers to Canada. “If we are being consistent with our own values and if we’re really trying to build a strong community that doesn’t have more people on the outside looking in than on the inside looking out, then the work done by organizations such as this and the work done by the city government is the most important work we do.”

Know your city with Heritage Toronto tours W
hether you’re a resident or a tourist, how much do you know about the City of Toronto? Let’s go one step further: how much do you know about the city’s rich history? The answers vary from a lot to very little; however, even those who know a lot about Toronto could certainly use a refreshing experience. So with that in mind, now is the time to take one of the many guided tours offered by Heritage Toronto, slated to run through to Sunday, Oct. 4, and get a city refresher. From Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to all the pockets in the downtown core, the city is alive with a rich and diverse history, making any day or weekend tour an experience every Torontonian should have. “Heritage Toronto’s fun and our view informative tours give citizens the chance to see Toronto’s neighbourin a way they never have Head outside hoods before,” said Heritage Toronto and explore executive director, Francisco Alvarez. Toronto If you’re looking to get started quickly, May is Asian Heritage Month with tours that take you through Chinatown, Korea Town, and the city’s Filipino community. In Etobicoke you can take in the ‘Hurricane Hazel Revisited’ tour. The ‘Guild Park’ tour talks about the long and rich artistic history of the southeast Scarborough area. In North York, why not take in the ‘Downsview Park’ tour? City neighbourhoods are also the focus of tours such as ‘Leslieville: Orange & Green’. There are also bike tours, music history tours, and tours such as ‘Before Toronto’ that take participants on an archaeological bus tour of the city’s first 13,000 years. Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner – even fall has tours to offer – so why not take full advantage of our great city – voted the No. 1 place to live in the world to live by The Economist magazine. Toronto has so much to offer, including some fascinating history that’s well worth learning more about. So head out and experience Toronto in ways you’ve never experienced before. Open house at Cosburn Park Lawn Bowling Club
A
s anyone who has travelled along Cosburn Avenue near Coxwell Avenue knows, one of the main features of the area is the lawn bowling club. Officially known as the Cosburn Park Lawn Bowling Club, the club has been part of East York since 1929. The clubhouse building that you see on the site dates from 1937 with the verandah being added in 1952. In 1971 the Borough of East York placed an addition on the building and it is now a comfortable place to gather. While many people associate lawn bowling with seniors, it is actually played by people of many different ages and it is definitely family friendly. As the club web site states, it is a sport suitable for anyone aged 10 to 100. Lawn bowling is certainly not intended for adrenaline
addicts but it is an excellent way to slow down and relax while exercising. It’s casual pace and friendly competition is an excellent way to relieve one of the stresses and strains of our hectic modern life. The game itself is a competition where one tosses a bowl (a small black ball) to a jack (a small white ball). player A player or a team earns one point for each bowl closer to the jack than the nearest opponent. While that may sound easy, it’s actually not as the bowl is unevenly weighted to one side so that it turns. So the skill comes in being able to control the bowl so that it travels to the spot where it will gain a point. To make things even more interesting you play on manicured grass, known as a bowling green that is divided into rinks.
joe cooper watchdog Your bowl must remain inside of the rink boundaries otherwise it falls into what is known as the ditch and is removed from play. There is much more to the game in terms of how scores are made and types of competitions that can be played. All in all, while it may appear to be a simple game, it’s actually very challenging and rewarding. The Cosburn Park Lawn Bowling Club is welcoming new members and is offering a series of free open house sessions during the month of May to introduce people to the sport. The next two sessions will take place on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. and Thursday, May 14, at 1 and 7 p.m. and there will be two others after that. All that is required to
attend is that you wear comfortable clothing and flat soled shoes. You will be provided with equipment to play and instructions on how to use that equipment properly. clubhouse There is a clubhouse on the grounds and members enjoy barbecues, special dinners, family days, card parties and other events. If you decide to become a member, you will find the fees to be very reasonable. If you wish further information about the club and open house events, please call 416-421-4171 or email cosburn_bowls@cosburnparklawnbowlingclub.ca. The club also has a web page with further information at www.cosburnparklawnbowlingclub.ca Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Tory needs to talk austerity
A
t the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May meeting of Toronto Council) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the Toronto Transit Commission, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical, in fact, thanks to the odd way that council decided to balance the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s own capital financing capacity in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rateof-inflation increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory
david nickle the city promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks exactly how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available to the city. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts. Given that, it’s understandable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide. Very soon, our mayor is
going to have to start talking about more difficult things: strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, cuts and fee increases. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees very much, effectively ruling out the operationally sensitive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools” such as road tolls and consumption taxes. Without a willingness to increase or enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity. In general, residents seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened. When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a rough-and-tumble council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it in fact is.

hosts public meeting wMetrolinx
rahul gupta
Metrolinx will hold a public meeting early next week to share its plan for separating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. It’s already been reported Metrolinx will launch an Environmental Assessment (EA) in late summer for building an overpass to elevate GO Transit rail service over CP Rail freight train traffic which currently meets at the crossing. Metrolinx established a resident panel to offer suggestions for transforming the lands freed up below the new overpass. The meeting is May 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre. For details, visit www.metrolinx. com/RERDavenport PRAISE FOR BYFORD’S OF TRANSIT wUSE
Breaking news: a public official was spotted riding the TTC. That may not seem newsworthy, particularly since the official in question is TTC CEO Andy Byford, who makes regular use of the Better Way,
TO in TRANSIT doesn’t own a car and has never had a driver’s licence. But after a Reddit Toronto user spotted Byford on the subway speaking to riders last Friday – stopping even to pick up some trash off the subway floor – it was enough to spawn a message thread (www.tinyurl.com/llbcjpy ) with comments praising the TTC’s top official. CRITICIZED FOR WINTER ROAD CARE wMINISTRY
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation promised swift changes following a report by the auditor general critical of its decision to contract out winter maintenance to the private sector. Released last week, Bonnie Lysyk’s report concludes contracting out work to the private sector has led to reduced expenses for the Ministry – but at the cost of a steady decline in maintenance standards. In a statement the minis-
try said the auditor general’s findings align with its own internal review of winter maintenance standards and that it would report back within 60 days on how to implement changes. FINISHING TOUCHES UNION PLATFORM wFOR
The TTC announced it will complete construction of the second subway platform at Union Station in coming weeks. The station was closed again last weekend as work crews completed final touches to the new Yonge line platform ahead of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. It will be the last time the station is closed before the Games begin in July due to the construction. The platform opened last year, but in an unfinished state. Its final design includes an immense “art wall” which doubles as a glass divider spanning the length of the Yonge and University waiting platforms. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. East end Olympians at World Relays A couple of east-end Olympic track stars had opposite results at the world relay championships which wrapped up in Nassau, Bahamas last weekend. Crystal Emmanuel, from the O’Connor Drive area, helped the women’s 4x100m team qualify for next summer’s Rio Olympics with a record setting performance that almost got them on the podium. Not only did the team qualify for next year’s Olympic games, they just missed the bronze medal by the narrowest of margins: 0.01 seconds. And both their preliminary round time of 42.94 seconds and their event final time of 42.85 seconds smashed the Canadian record they set at the 2013 world championships of 42.99 seconds. The women’s 4x400m team also qualified for Rio. Not so for the men, who didn’t qualify in either event. Aaron Brown, who grew up in the area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard streets, saw his 4x100m relay team crash out

East York resident Crystal Emmanuel, pictured here in last summer’s Commonwealth Games in Scotland, helped the Canadian women’s 4x100 relay team qualify for the Olympics in Rio in 2016.
as did the 4x200m relay team (not an Olympic event). “Baton exchange miscues sunk any medal aspirations with neither advancing to their event final,” noted the Athletics Canada press release. The men’s 4x400m relay team also did not qualify. Fortunately as Athletics Canada also noted, “all is not lost.”
That’s because there will be more opportunities to qualify for Rio 2016 including at this summer’s 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing. Canada’s 4x100 relay team earned a bronze medal at the last world championships in 2013. Brown went to Bowmore Public School and then on to Birchmount Park Collegiate. Emmanuel was born and raised in Scarborough (1991 to 1999, attending Eastview Public School), then to Barbados (1999 to 2008) and then back to Toronto to East York’s O’Connor Drive area, finishing up high school at Vaughan Road Academy and East York Alternative School. Both Olympic relay events (4x100m and 4x400m) are featured in this summer’s Pam Am games and will be held right here in Toronto at CIBC Pan/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium at York University. Athletics Canada has not yet officially named its Pan Am team.

Parents expected to explain abscences >>>from page 1 constituency office of Premier Kathleen Wynne, who is their MPP. In Scarborough, just over 700 children did not attend Cornell Junior Public School, near Markham and Scarborough Golf Club roads, though 150 students arrived as usual. “We’re open, and staff are here and working,” said Maureen Coyle, Cornell’s principal. At around 2 p.m., the Toronto District School Board said it did not have a number yet of absences across the city. Board officials, however,
noted the absences were heavy in some areas of the city, including Thorncliffe, the Kingsview Village area in Etobicoke, and some parts of Scarborough. Schools were working to confirm the reasons for absences, though many parents handed letters to principals and teachers in advance while others spoke to them without sending a letter. “When a child is not in school, we’re expecting a parent to call and say why,” said Shari Schwartz-Maltz, a board spokesperson. School principals, meanwhile, are doing their best to address “misconcep-
tions” about the curriculum, Schwartz-Maltz said, urging parents to talk to principals and teachers, go through the curriculum and “continue the dialogue.” “Parents can protest as they wish but we’d like the kids to come back to school,” she said. Parent groups opposed to the new plan want the province to restart consultations on the curriculum, but Education Minister Liz Sandals has said the update will be introduced as planned.

Local coffee house owner killed in Kentucky robbery JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com O n e o f t h e ow n e r s o f Leslieville’s Grinder Coffee was killed this past weekend while visiting Louisville, Kentucky for the Kentucky Derby. Scott Hunter, who also tended bar for several years at the House on Parliament (HOP) in Cabbagetown, was fatally shot as a result of an altercation with three people during an apparent armed robbery attempt around 9 p.m. His friend was not seriously injured during the incident. “We are so grateful for all of your support during our time of loss,” Grinder Coffee posted on its Facebook page. “Thank you to everyone for their kind words, love and support through this difficult time. As soon as we know more about a service, memorial, etc. We will keep you all informed.”
Out of respect for Hunter, the café closed its door until Tuesday. A book of condolences has been set up at the coffee shop at 1021 Gerrard St. E., which is between Pape and Jones avenues near Gerrard Square. All are welcome to drop by and share a story. House on Parliament also posted a message of condolence on social media. “It is with sadness and heartbreak we tell our HOP friends of the death of Scott Hunter. Scotty was in Louisville, Kentucky attending the Kentucky Derby when a mugging went horribly wrong. Our hearts go out to his family in Hamilton and all the people who knew and loved him.” In the Facebook message, the downtown east pub called Hunter “an intrepid member of our family, able to fulfill any role we placed him in on the floor. We will remember him as a tough as nails co-worker with a heart of gold, always
there with a warm hug, shoulder to cry on, a quick grin and funny as hell.” The pub also lauded Hunter for his recent success as an entrepreneur. “It is a testament to his drive and ability that he was able to balance both roles so well,” they wrote. “To Scott’s family, we would like you to know what a joy it was to have Scotty in our lives. He was one of a kind, well lived and loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.” Louisville Metro Police have arrested and charged three teens – two males and a female – with murder and robbery in connection with his death. Investigators are also looking into whether the trio is behind a series of recent robberies. – with files from Torstar News Service
