Foreign-trained professionals get Canadian experience at TEGH JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Late last month marked the first of many steps in a long journey for approximately 30 graduates of Toronto East General Hospital’s (TEGH) English-as-a-second language (ESL) Hospital Training Program. Run in partnership with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the 15-year-old program is designed to help foreign-trained health-care professionals learn about medical technology, while providing them with muchneeded Canadian work experience. TEGH offers the 10-weeklong course twice a year. Those who successfully complete the program are given the opportunity to volunteer at the facility. To date, more than 650 students have graduated from TEGH’s ESL Hospital Training Program. “It’s a very exciting day for us. I like to think of this day not as the end of a program but the start of a new chapter,” said Denny Petkovski, TEGH’s manager of volunteer services, during the graduation ceremony. “We’re happy to help you throughout your journey. Dale Northcote is the program’s instructor. “What a wonderful group of people you are. The healthcare sector is so lucky and the clinics you are going to work at one day are so lucky to get employees like you who are dedicated, interested, motivated and sincere,” she said at the Wednesday, April 30 graduation event. Aside from giving graduates a chance to give back to the community as TEGH volunteers, the program also aims to help build the confidence of its participants, while giving them the chance to practice their English-

It also gives foreign-trained medical professionals a chance to make connections with others in the same shoes. “Because of the program, my confidence came back and I realized it’s never too late to go back to school and pursue my dreams,” said Geraldine Mayor, a clinical nurse who came to Canada from the Philippines in 2008 to work as a live-in caregiver. “The class was really amazing. It was really fun and I made new friends.” Mayor, who said she hopes her husband and two children will be able to immigrate to Canada by early next year, said she’s grateful her employers allowed her to come in a little late on the days she was in school and

that they understood how important the program was to her. Jose Blanco and his wife Maribel Gomez came to Canada from Venezuela in November 2010 to give their three sons, Gabriel, Javier and Cristhian, a better life. Blanco, an obstetrician/ gynecologist, and Gomez, a pediatrician, both graduated from TEGH’s ESL Hospital Training Program in December 2011. The couple now volunteer at TEGH. “These people are like me two years ago. It’s not impossible,” Gomez said following the recent graduation celebration. “We both realize it’s tough to get into the health-care system (in Canada) but we still want to work in the field. … We realize English communication is key.” Blanco is currently working to become a midwife, while Gomes is studying to become a lactation consultant at the International Breastfeeding Centre.

Danforth art festival creating a buzz JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Constr uction hoarding announcing the future opening of a Chanel store along a desolate stretch of Danforth Avenue between Coxwell and Woodbine avenues is creating quite a buzz. The installation called Opening Soon is actually one of more than 20 large-scale art projects featured in the Art of the Danforth festival, which kicked off May 2 and runs through to Sunday. Designed by AfghaniCanadian multidisciplinary artist Mahmood Popal, Opening Soon aims to get people thinking about the stages of a neighbourhood’s transformation and questioning what is at stake, what the area will look like post-gentrification, and what remains or moves in after the galleries, independent cafés and barbershops are gone. The installation in front of 1822 Danforth Ave. is part of a larger exhibit put on by Aisle 4 curatorial team, which consists of emerging curators Emily Fitzpatrick, Shannon Linde, Patricia Ritacca and Renée van der Avoird. Earlier this week, it was reported Chanel would be pursuing legal action as the installation used the brand’s logo without authorization. “There is a misunderstanding. Chanel has not the intention to file a lawsuit and was very surprised to read this,” Virginie Vincens, Chanel Canada’s public relations director, wrote in an email to The Mirror on Tuesday. Vincens went on to clarify that initially Chanel Canada was not aware that the fake storefront was an artist’s installation when photographs were sent to them. Secondly, she said the Chanel brand has no connection with the project and lastly that they’re “a little bit

concerned because people might be confused about the sign and think it is real.” Asad Raza, Art of the Danforth’s director, said he was unaware Chanel was considering legal action. “The lawsuit was all news to me. This project isn’t about Chanel,” he said, adding he’s happy the controversial installation is generating some great conversations about gentrification. “It’s amazing and everything we could hope for as producers of a festival,” Raza said late Tuesday after-

noon. “(Opening Soon) isn’t about one particular brand. It’s about the future.” Raza said he spoke to the installation’s creator, Mahmood Popal, about his concept when he was working to put together the third annual festival. “I was struck by how people move into a neighbourhood, develop a sense of ownership and then things happen that are out of their control. Changes happen and we don’t even realize it,” he said, pointing the unknown

moments when neighbourhoods such as Yorkville and Queen West became gentrified. Art of the Danforth aims to experiment with the role of art in the community and its ability to transform the neighbourhood, while unifying and giving a voice to the cultural diversity found along the Danforth, and to showcase the artistic talent found in and beyond the community.

He’s running with all his heart. One year after his heart stopped, Toronto police Const. Andrew Rosbrook began a run from Ottawa to Toronto to raise awareness of the need for publicly accessible defibrillators. The officer from East York’s 54 Division was near the finish line of Toronto’s annual spring half-marathon when he suffered a cardiac arrest May 5, 2013. The scream of a fellow runner brought over Det. Laurie McCann and an offduty physician. A paramedic and a paramedic-in-training soon joined the efforts to revive the 48-year-old. Two paramedics with a defibrillator then arrived by bike and administered a shock that re-started Rosbrook’s heart, saving his life. He awoke at St. Michael’s Hospital five hours later. “By that point they had put a stent in the one artery that had become blocked and opened that up. I was actually feeling pretty decent,” Rosbrook said. “And then I hear the story of how I owe my life to some fantastic citizens and a Mikey defibrillator.” Rosbrook was running a month after his cardiac arrest and returned to work in three months. The constable noted he has no recollection of the cardiac arrest or the minutes leading up to it. “There’s a five-kilometre stretch of the race that I can’t remember at all, so I’m not sure whether I was stumbling around or I was still running on normally or what was going on.”

On Monday of this week, Rosbrook began his 470-kilometre New Life Marathon from the police memorial on Parliament Hill. He’s making stops in Brockville, Ga n a n o q u e, K i n g s t o n , Napanee, Belleville, Trenton, Brighton, Cobourg, Port Hope, Newcastle and Oshawa before arriving (around 6 p.m. May 12) at the Ontario Place location of the finish line of the race that nearly ended his life last year. The run aims to raise money for the Mikey Network and raise awareness to the importance of public access defibrillators. “In using them you could very well save a life,” Rosbrook said. “I think it’s important to have them widespread throughout our communities.”

A conversation with John Tory about East York

uring the mayoralty race of 2003, I undertook a series of columns where I interviewed the top three contenders of the time. In each case the primary question that I asked each of them was what they would do to benefit East York if they were elected. One of the people whom I interviewed at that time was John Tory (the other two being Barbara Hall and former Toronto mayor David Miller) and Tory is again running for mayor. At the time that I interviewed him I asked him his feelings about amalgamation and he stated to me that the city needed more, not less. So despite the fact that I had found him to be a charming and personable politician, I published that warning about his views. When the results of the voting for mayor came out, Tory had lost to Miller, with most of Tory’s support

joe cooper watchdog being in the outer suburbs of Toronto. Recently, John Tory contacted me and asked for another interview with no conditions or stipulations attached. I agreed to talk with him and over a cup of coffee I again asked him the same question as I did 11 years ago and received a very different answer. different person The John Tory of today is a different person from the one I met a decade ago and whose views on East York, as well as the role of communities in general, coincided with mine. Apparently, thanks to his experiences gained through talking to people through politics and his radio

talk show he has come to understand the value people place on their communities. realizes He now realizes that after all this time amalgamation has not eradicated Etobicoke, York, North York, Scarborough, downtown Toronto or East York. Tory now understands that people’s community identities are primarily local and that if one is to be a successful mayor those identities have to be respected. Not just respected, Tory told me, but actively recognized as being real. So real that one idea that he presented to me would be to have city council actually meet as a whole in each of the old municipalities, and deal with the issues in that area as a group. He also wanted to see our municipal centre used

more like a community centre so that East York’s sense of ownership to it could be strengthened. None of what I am saying here is an endorsement for John Tory, but I do think it’s important to point out to readers that the man’s awareness of East York has changed. It’s up to you now to review his other policies and platforms and decide if he is the person whom you wish to be chief magistrate for the City of Toronto. As for myself, I intend to approach the other main mayoralty candidates over the upcoming months as I did back in 2003 and ask them the same question: “If you are elected mayor, what do you intend to do that will benefit East York?” Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. Kelly’s mayoral role deserves praise

e won’t return your phone call personally. He doesn’t worry about his office budget. And he shows up early. Sometimes, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly shows up very early. On Monday, he and Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam hosted a 9 a.m. news conference, to do something else that Mayor Rob Ford would never do: invite 200 LGBT couples to get married, for free, at Toronto’s Casa Loma. Now that Mayor Ford has left city hall to look after his personal problems, Kelly is the de-facto mayor. The leave of absence funnels to Kelly the few powers left to Ford after council voted to isolate him in November. Kelly represents Toronto at official functions, acts as the head of the government in emergency and otherwise. And he continues in his role of attempting to elevate the discussion at city hall, and restore dignity to the institution – a role in which Kelly has excelled. I take the time to point

months taking council’s pulse, nudging things along on issues he cares about, but otherwise taking a que-serasera approach to matters of municipal policy. You would never run a campaign promising to be a mayor like Kelly. But it is actually a good lesson for future mayors, as they think about how to manage this city. Norm Kelly’s geniality has led to a pretty productive council. It passed a decent budget, made a tough call on the future of the Billy Bishop Airport, and generally conducted its business as well as one might hope. The next mayor might find him/herself needing some of Kelly’s low-key mojo. Given the city’s financial constraints, it will be difficult to make a mark with more than one or two big, city-building projects and still manage the books. The virtues of modesty, inclusiveness and compromise might be the main of what our future leaders require.

Kelly stepped into the role of deputy mayor in the midst of it, taking over from Doug Holyday after he made his way to Queen’s Park. Kelly did so gamely – knowing there was trouble with the mayor, and hoping to provide quiet counsel to the mayor and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, as the office unravelled. A thankless job, but Kelly had the good grace to appear grateful for it. And when council put him in the sort-of top job, he managed to retain some grace even as he was clearly delighted to oblige. Wharf winning entry wMerchants’ The results are in, and the name of a new waterfront street is Merchants’ Wharf. The “main street” for the emerging East Bayfront residential development located on the water’s edge and connecting to Queen’s Quay, Merchants’ Wharf was one of 700 suggestions for a naming contest organized by Waterfront Toronto. Submitted by Daniel Thompson, the name received nearly 40 per cent of some 2,200 votes cast during the online contest. The naming choice must still be approved by TorontoEast York Community Council. ‘Slow order’ between Vic Park, Kennedy If you’ve noticed slower than normal subway service on the surface tracks between Victoria Park and Kennedy stations of late, that’s because the TTC has imposed a “slow order” on trains passing through. The order, in place for safety considerations due to the poor state of the tracks, has meant a doubling of

The TTC is performing overnight maintenance and track replacement work following the end of service. The TTC wants to erect a 19-acre garage and maintenance facility to store 250 buses at the intersection of McNicoll Avenue and Kennedy Road, which it says will be needed within five years. Last week the TTC board heard a presentation on the project that has some residents worried about worse road congestion and an uptick in diesel emissions in the area caused by increased bus traffic.
