Doors Open this Saturday at TTC’s Greenwood yard JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It takes a lot of hard work to keep the TTC’s fleet of subway cars along the Bloor-Danforth line in good working order. This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., members of the public will get a rare opportunity to
check out the inner workings of the TTC at its central service yard at 400 Greenwood Ave., just a few blocks south of Danforth Avenue, during the 16th annual Doors Open Toronto festival. The Greenwood Yard, which is celebrating 50 years of service this year, is a busy facility that serves as both a rail yard for
all of the Bloor-Danforth line’s subway vehicles as well as a service shop. TTC Spokesperson Danny Nicholson said annually crews overhaul 74 model T1 subway vehicles there. A set of two cars takes 18 days to completely turn over. Interestingly, the complex
has 15-kilometres of track, he noted. Prior to being a TTC yard, the 31-acre site was a brick yard and a garbage dump. “(The Greenwood Yard) was originally a quarry way back when, then in the 1930s it was basically the official dump for the city of Toronto,” said Nicholson.
“It was called Harper’s Dump.” On Saturday, visitors can tour various workshops within the yard. There will also be a children’s activity area and a barbecue.

Volunteers needed to pick fruit from local trees Not Far from the Tree (NFFTT), Toronto’s very own fruit tree project, inspiring Torontonians to harvest, share, celebrate, and steward the bounty from our urban forest, is looking for people to join its team of supreme gleaners in Ward 30. Eligible applicants must be friendly and comfortable in a leadership role, reliable and responsible and comfortable riding a bike in the city. Responsibilities include leading fruit picks during Toronto’s fruit harvest season from June to October. For each pick, the gleaner must pick up a cargo bike and equipment from a neighbourhood storage hub; bike to a
fruit tree within the same neighbourhood; greet volunteers and lead the pick, keeping things friendly and safe; and deliver fruit to a nearby partner agency and return equipment to storage. Fruit pick-ups last up to two hours each and the supreme gleaner shift is usually three and a half to four hours long. Some of the perks of the job include a steady supply of fruit and your chance to pick it throughout the season, picks scheduled according to your availability, a chance to build community and contribute to food security and environmental sustainability, the opportunity to ride in

Caregivers are heroes, but they also need support

ssuming the role of caregiver for a loved one may seem a natural decision when a friend or family member is struck with dementia, or acute or chronic health problems. But it can be a long, burdensome and isolated journey and those who make these sacrifices need to make sure they’re getting the supports they need. That’s why we at Metroland Media Toronto, in partnership with Downsizing Divas, are once again bringing The Caregiver Show to our city on May 30. Presented by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, which offers at-home services for family caregivers, the free show is a chance for caregivers to discover that they’re not alone. There’s a wealth of resources available to help make what can be a difficult job that much easier to undertake. According to the Alzheimer our view Society of Canada, the physical psychological toll on family May 30 show and caregivers is considerable – with dedicated to 15 to 32 per cent experiencing depression at one point or caregivers another. While people care for others out of a sense of personal responsibility and love, they need to be prepared to deal with the stress involved. At this year’s show, hear from speaker Teepa Snow, who has more than 33 years of experience in geriatrics, and is an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. Health and wellness expert Rose Reisman will also be speaking at the show about the importance of taking care of one’s own health and nutrition. The Caregiver Show is your chance to connect with others sharing similar circumstances and learn tips on how to navigate opportunities for government support. Discover that you’re not alone – in fact, you’re among almost eight million family caregivers in Canada. Get first-hand advice from experts, explore products and see demonstrations from our participating organizations. And don’t miss the Rest and Relaxation Zone, to help you replenish your spirit and energy levels. It takes a hero to dedicate oneself to the care of another, but even heroes need support sometimes. The show is Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centennial College Progress Campus’ Athletics Wellness Centre, 941 Progress Ave. To register for the free event, visit www.caregivershow.ca

Wildflower preserve offers taste of spring
W
hile the spring has been unseasonably late this year, it’s been wonderful to finally see trees and plants bloom. It’s so satisfying to see lush and green trees after a long winter and finally see the local flower gardens full of colour. While it is a delight to see how the green thumbs of many people have made East York a delight to the eye and senses, there is good offering available from Mother Nature herself. The best place to see that is the Todmorden Mills Wildflower Preserve, located in our community’s backyard in the Don Valley. The preserve is a unique site, being made up of nine hectares of the remains of the original Don River and adjacent forest. It is hard to believe today, but the original valley was filled with old growth pine, oak trees and elm trees,
with wolves and bears living amongst them. What was also an important part of the forest was a blanket of wild flowers that bloomed from the spring into the autumn. As the European population grew, a saw mill was built and the forest was cut down in order to build the settlements that were growing. location The location became the site of a brewery and flower mill, and represented the beginnings of industrialization in what was to become Ontario. In 1991, Charles Sauriol, the man who saved Todmorden Mills from demolition and promoted the environmental conservation of the Don Valley, initiated the establishment of the wildflower preserve. He was assisted by Dave Money, past president of the Ontario Horticulture
joe cooper watchdog Association, and a number of local volunteers. The site has a wellmarked and maintained half kilometre path that takes you through the preserve, past the oxbow that is the remains of the old Don River. What you will see are a group of small ponds and marsh that are the remnants of the river, plus literally hundreds of species of native plants. In addition, there are also a wide variety of birds and animals to be seen as well, with some that you would never see in your backyard. Along with the maintenance of the trail and preservation of native species of plants, there is also an effort being made to reduce invasive non-native plants. One of the worst prob-
lems being faced is the large amount of human generated garbage that comes in due to either illegal dumping or the debris that comes from the Don Valley Parkway. The on-going work of maintaining the site is the responsibility of the Todmorden Mills Wildflower Preserve Committee (TMWPC). It is a charitable organization run by a volunteer board with about 50 members, and the public is welcome to join for free. People are welcome to simply enjoy the preserve by walking through it, or there are a number of events organized by the TMWPC that you can participate in. To participate, pick up a brochure at Todmorden Mills. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at eym@insidetoronto.com

Liberal MPP Arthur Potts has a choice: Protect the people of Toronto from even higher hydro bills – by voting against Bill 91
OR
Fall in line with the sellout of Hydro One – a one-time dead-end cash grab at the expense of future generations.
Important message to members and supporters of the Ontario Liberal Party: Even partial privatization has brought soaring electricity rates in countries around the world. Small business owners, farmers and residents cannot afford to pay more for electricity. Future generations will need the perpetual flow of hundreds of millions of dollars from our public Hydro One — to pay for public services like health care and education. If Bill 91 is passed, Liberal MPPs like Arthur Potts, the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier Wynne will be held responsible for the consequences.

Councillors must address the costs of the Gardiner T
he debate over the future of the Gardiner Expressway could turn out to be a very interesting discussion about the future of Toronto. It is odd that it should be: after all, we’re just talking about 1.7 kilometres or so of concrete, and the bit of roadway that is currently suffocating underneath. Toronto is so much more than the connection of two highways, and really, whether the city spends $900 million to rebuild the thing on a new configuration or about $400 million to rip it all down doesn’t make for a hill of beans in Scarborough or Etobicoke or North York. It is not a big part of the city. City debate But it has become a big part of the debate about the city all the same, and when Toronto politicians start to talk about it… it gets emotional. Indeed, it got so emotional last week that when Toronto’s public works and infrastructure committee was faced with making a proper recommendation on the matter, it threw up its hands and left it all to council. Mayor John Tory is going into that council meeting intending to support the ‘hybrid’ option of essentially shifting and rebuilding the ramps between the
david nickle the city
Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. It is costly, and doesn’t confer as many city-building advantages — but it appeals to many of the voters who might leave their mark next to pro-car Rob Ford’s name next election. And there are enough of those voters across the city that it’s likely a majority of Toronto councillors will lean toward the more expensive project. But the matter of the cost is the thing, and it might be quite the thing. York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, who sits on the city’s budget committee, is a supporter of the hybrid option — but at the May 19 meeting of that committee, he made it clear that he wasn’t about to support it without a way to pay. And the best way to pay? Road tolls, he said — preferably collected in such a way that it gave Toronto taxpayers a break. Well. If there is any issue more historically emotional than the question of the continued elevation of the Gardiner Expressway, it is the terrifying prospect of Hwy. 407-style road tolls on highways running through the heart of the city. Even when they haven’t been an issue — as in the
2003 mayoral race when John Tory (then a candidate) accused David Miller (soon to be the mayor) of favouring tolls on city highways — they’ve been a preoccupying issue. Miller spent a great deal of energy then and in the months and years afterward distancing himself from the road-toll option for paying for city infrastructure.

Tolls consdered The city considered imposing tolls in 2008, and eventually rejected the idea because a full, regionaltolling system that included the 401, DVP and 427 would have been prohibitively expensive to set up. And indeed, this would likely remain the case. But Pasternak raises an interesting issue, as council moves to consider yet another billion-dollaror-so infrastructure project resting on the same old revenue streams as before: namely, if Torontonians want to start living larger, or simply according to their needs, then money is going to have to come from somewhere beyond simple savings. And sooner or later, Toronto Council is going to have to start talking about what that might look like.

transit launches new trip planner wMetrolinx As the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games approach, a new trip planner from Metrolinx seeks to provide accurate travel data for transit rides taken in Toronto and beyond. Triplinx works similarly to more well-known search resources like Google Maps, although in this case it caters to transit users. You can plot out any trip made by one of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area’s transit agencies, including the TTC. The site also has a searchable stop finder, access to schedules and service updates, and information on the various transit providers’ fare rates. To use a beta version of the site, visit www.triplinx.ca bike only for some bus racks wOne
Those front-facing bike racks found on some TTC buses will be restricted to carrying only one bicycle following concerns raised by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, it was announced last week. The ministry ordered the TTC to suspend and review the use of the racks in the fall
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT after concerns were raised about sightlines for bus drivers when the racks, which carry two bicycles, were full. The restrictions apply to the articulated buses as well as a new fleet of 40-foot buses manufactured by Nova. All other TTC buses can still carry two bicycles. Cyclists can transport their rides onto a bus, but only if there is enough room. Subway busker applications wWanted:
Want to share your musical gifts with hundreds of commuters and make some cash on the side? You’ll first have to impress the TTC. The final auditions for the transit commission’s annual subway busker search don’t take place until August. But to get that far you’ll need to formally apply for a chance at an audition. There’s only room for 175 solo or duo acts and the TTC expects all applications will be in well before the
deadline of Friday, June 19. A judging panel will pick the top 74 acts over a weekend of live auditions at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition. To pick up your application package, head over to Davisville Station during regular business hours or visit www.ttc.ca zone rankles cyclists wpedestrian
It seems the decision to establish a special area for pedestrians on a stretch of John Street has rankled some cyclists. By all accounts the John Street Pedestrian Zone established between Queen Street West and Adelaide Street has been a hit with those on foot able to enjoy some more sidewalk space. But the move also takes out crucial curb space for cyclists, activists say. Some critical of the move posted pictures and videos on social media of a virtually empty pedestrian area while adjacent car and bike traffic was constrained. Care for yourself, then care for others: Rose Reisman LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Rose Reisman’s resume boasts such titles as nutritionist, entrepreneur, author and TV personality – all of which have garnered her acclaim, yet one of her perhaps lesser known roles, but equally fulfilling, was that of caregiver. For years, her mother suffered from dementia and Reisman, with help from her sister, cared for her on a daily basis. It was a difficult period, recalled Reisman. “I remember feeling really anxious,” Reisman said. “I was missing out on exercise and eating well. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, ‘I’m not taking care of myself.’” Almost eight million people in Canada are taking on the role of family caregiver. They are responsible for as much as 80 per cent of the needs of those living with acute or chronic health issues. It’s a job that comes with its challenges, however, there is help. On May 30, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, at-home services for family caregivers, presents The Caregiver Show, which takes place at the Centennial College’s Progress Campus Athletics Wellness Centre. The show will provide caregivers with education, networking opportunities and resources. It is brought to Toronto residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing Divas. Reisman is one of the guest speakers along with Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist who works as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. With an independent practice, Snow has clinical appointments with Duke University’s School of Nursing and UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine. Obesity and anxiety can be occupational hazards for caregivers, Reisman said. “What happens is, when you’re taking care of others, your own health fails,” she said, adding that caregivers put themselves at risk of such illnesses as heart disease and cancer. “Your immune system goes down. You’ve got to remember to eat.” Reisman advises starting slowly, not only for caregivers, but for anyone seeking to change their eating habits for the better. Stick to Canada’s Food Guide. Try to eat three out of the four food groups at every meal. Have a piece of whole grain bread with a piece of cheese and some fruit. “It’s that easy,” she said. For snacks, consume two of the four food groups. Eating according to Canada’s Food Guide will provide sustenance for at least three hours. “Sleep is really important,”
Richter scale,” Reisman recalled. Although she was slim, genetics were working against her. Reisman’s father and aunt had died of heart failure in their 50s.
Rose Reisman
Reisman added. Reisman, who is on the committee for the Women’s Brain Health Initiative (www.womensbrainhealth.org), which creates education programs and funds research to combat brain aging diseases that affect women, said there are particular foods one can eat to promote brain health. Brain disease, she said, starts in our 20s. These “brain foods” include berries, which contain the antioxidant anthocyanidin that helps fight inflammation and oxidation, dark greens, such as kale or baby kale, broccoli and brussels sprouts and fish, like salmon, which prevents inflammation that causes plaque buildup in the brain. “The hardest thing is changing your lifestyle,” Reisman said. She speaks from experience. She was in her early 30s, a mother of four children, and an avid runner, who thought she was healthy until a cholesterol check provided a rude awakening. “My cholesterol levels were off the
