Welcome to our annual Hospital for Sick Children – or SickKids – themed edition. While you will find your regular community stories and features in The East York Mirror, the balance of stories are in support of Healthy and Happy Month at SickKids. Why do we do this? The health of our children is too important. There are far too many signs our children simply aren’t as healthy as we were during our own youth. For instance, in a recent SickKids Health and Happy Pulse Check survey, 79 per cent of adults 55 and older think children’s lifestyles are not as healthy today as compared to their own childhood.

Don’t be fooled by the name, the Children’s Peace Theatre does more than just allow youth to create plays to promote peace. “There’s music, visual arts and music studio. We’re introducing art forms that are more relevant to young people,” said Karen Emerson, the artistic director at Children’s Peace Theatre. “Theatre is predominant, but within that there’s composing of the lyrics and music, art installations that go along with it ... They can participate in any other art form they like.” The goal of the community arts organization is to help youth create a culture of peace through various forms of art and by discussing issues and covering topics that are relevant to their lives through the expression of art. The organization was founded in 2000 by Eldon and Marcella Hannon-Shields in response to the United Nation’s Declaration of the International Decade of Peace for Children of the World. It started off with conflict transformation workshops in local schools, which still happens today, and it launched its first Peace Camp that summer. Back then Emerson says it was a two-week day camp,
instead of the three weeks it is now. Sh e s a i d the prothis grams have community evolved sigstory nificantly inspired by to involve the goal year round of having programs as happy, opposed to healthy just summer children camps and have expanded to include some youth-led projects such as the Youth Festival. “It was really a program within a larger organization and then shortly after that it became an organization itself,” said Emerson. “Now it’s a multiple range of projects and programs. It has expanded hugely an it’s ever-growing.” Some of the programs include the Peace Camp, Youth Leaders Theatre Project and ArtZone to name a few. Throughout all the programs, Emerson said the theatre tries to promote its philosophy of “the three Cs”: compassion, courage and creativity. She said that philosophy is encouraged in order to create a safe space where youths can have a dialogue about what’s happening in youth culture. That safe space also teaches youth that unfortunately conflict is inevitable and because of its constant presence what’s
important is how you resolve that conflict. “We allow people to see conflict as an opportunity for change and growth,” explained Emerson. It’s a healthy way for them to work out any issues they’re experiencing, she added. According to Emerson, it costs about $400,000 to run the Peace Theatre annually. It’s predominantly funded by the government, but runs on community donations as well. The money is used to pay for maintenance, supplies and the artists who come and teach youths participating in the program. Last year for the Peace Camp production of ‘Passage: A Moving Experience’, about global migration, its musical director was, jazz musician Brownman Ali who has toured with Paul Simon and Beyonce, helped teach music at the camp and compose songs. Emerson said she’s amazed at what the participants of the Peace Camp come up with and how they process topics like they did last year. “We really go deep (into the issues). This isn’t a superficial conversation. We get experts to come in and talk about what the issues are,” explained Emerson. Childhood is the time to deal with obesity issues SickKids Foundation CEO and President Ted Garrard shares his personal experience Angeline Mair amair@insidetoronto.com
T
ed Garrard, SickKids Foundation CEO and president, stands tall with a lean muscular frame and walks with such a quick assertive stride that you’d never believe he struggled with childhood obesity. Now, he uses his life’s worth of personal weight management lessons and channels it into keeping kids healthy, happy and physically fit through the SickKids Healthy and Health campaign. As a child, the long-time east Toronto resident said he was “on the heavier side” and “for quite some time family members had made comments about my weight”. So his father decided to give him a real world tangible example of what Garrard was doing to his body and the implications it would have for him in the future. Extra weight His dad asked him to pick up two 50-pound bags of cement - one in each hand - and said to Garrard: ‘I want you to understand your heart is carrying around this extra load. Is that good for your health?’ Garrard said that he had never thought of it that way. “It was something that was another catalyst - for me coming to the conclusion my weight was an issue and I needed to deal with it.” When he was 10 years old he visited the Hospital for Sick Children because he had put so much weight on in such a short amount of time that he needed to be examined. It was
“
thought, he said, “I might have some kind of endocrinological problem.” The diagnosis was lack of exercise and not eating properly. Garrard was made acutely aware of his lifestyle choices. However, there were many challenges he faced, including personal, that prevented him from living a more fit lifestyle. This included his family dynamic, which may have added a few extra pounds as well, he said, because his younger brother was a star athlete and this left Garrard feeling second rate when he saw how active his sibling was. “Where he was a great player all I ended up being was a great coach. I wasn’t getting physical activity as a coach. I was barking out orders.” His parents didn’t push him to be physically active either, he said. They accepted the fact he liked to sit and watch TV, eating spoonfuls of peanut butter. He said the family accepted that his brother was a great athlete and Garrard excelled intellectually. Garrard said that in school he hated gym class and would sometimes make excuses to avoid taking part. Sedentary behaviour “It wasn’t the fact that I wasn’t feeling well, it was the point that I didn’t want to engage in the physical exercise because I felt so self conscious about not being at the same level as other people participating in gym. And that self-consciousness was really born out of the fact that I was overweight.” When you become
...It was the point that I didn’t want to engage in the physical exercise because I felt so self conscious about not being at the same level as other people participating in gym. And that self -consciousness was really born of the fact that I was overweight – Ted Garrard, CEO and President of the SickKids Foundation

overweight, other issues start to creep up that don’t motivate you to change but rather reinforce a lifestyle of sedentary behaviour and you end up feeling sorry for yourself. He said he fell into the vicious cycle of: “Well, I’ll just eat or I won’t go to gym class because you don’t feel good about yourself.” It wasn’t until Garrard was 17 years old and he went away to university and began living in residence that his sedentary lifestyle got the jolt it needed. Within his first year, he dropped 100 pounds. “I didn’t need to hide from the world because of my weight.” Losing the weight took a little teamwork. He said he just happened to be roommates with “one of the most fantastically handsome guys in the world” who is still a best friend. Garrard looked on while the roommate was getting all the dates. At that point, he said, his competitive juices went
into high gear and he said to his roommate: “‘I want to be like you.’” Most importantly, he said, his roommate said to him: “‘You can be like me! But I’m going to help you get there.’” After that, the two started to workout together and Garrard got started on an exercise regimen. “We would go out running daily. He used to make me put a green garbage bag under my running clothes so that I would sweat it out even worse. Everyday he’d push me to go a little further until I began to enjoy it. I started to see the results – with the weight coming off – it felt really good after a run. It all clicked in.” During the interview for this story, Garrard takes two photos out of his shirt pocket. One is from high school prom and shows him weighing 240 pounds. He said in his heavy days he never let anyone take close ups. He always stood in the distance. The second photo is of two 18-year-
old men standing side by side. Within 14 months of meeting his university roommate. “That’s me on the left,” he said, beside his roommate and looking equally svelte. “I could even take my shirt off,” Garrard said. He’s been able to successfully keep the weight off through adulthood. “Age and gravity do take effect,” he jokingly adds. Garrard knew there wasn’t a single magic pill to solve his weight issue but a few points he maintains are to get physical activity ingrained in your everyday life and have parents who are part of the physical activity, too. So that means going for a family hike, bike or walk. “A child who is not eating properly and who is not exercising unless they see their parents role modelling similar behaviour are just not going to do it. And I think if a parent is concerned they had better look at themselves and say am I doing the right thing.”
Today, he said, there are far more community resources to access information. For example, calorie count on foods and The Centre for Healthy Active Kids at Sick Kids. There are far more tools and resources parents can access and they should not be afraid in doing it. Childhood is the ideal time to address issues such as obesity to prevent other health and well being issues from creeping up. “If some of these trends continue they are going to cause the healthcare system a lot more money down the road because they (children) are going to be chronically ill for a long period of time. And it all comes from doing some good preventative things early on in life,” Garrard said. Visit us online for more SickKids stories from across Toronto at: bit.ly/Se03ai

Growing healthier children now will save grief later on
Write us
C
anadians believe our youth do not have a healthy lifestyle. We are twice as concerned about obesity in our youth, than any other health risk. That says a lot about the physical conditioning of our youth. But it also says there is hope for our youth – if we heed the warning signs and act now. It’s Healthy and Happy Month (healthyandhappy. com) at The Hospital for Sick Children and this year the theme is centered around prevention of youth health issues. Growing healthier children now will save much grief later in life when they become unhealthy adults fallen victim to the bad decisions made when young. And all of this is increasingly our view taxing on the health care system – overburdened and underfunded Get motivated given increasing demands. The hospital – affectionately to help raise known as SickKids – conducted a survey, and here’s an example of healthy kids what they found: w 56 per cent said society must do everything it can to improve the lifestyle of today’s children. w Bullying, obesity, child abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, suicide, depression all rank high in the minds of Canadians. w 78 per cent say children today are getting less exercise compared to their own childhood. w 65 per cent say children today have poorer eating habits. w 59 per cent say children are receiving less nutritional value in what they eat. w Mental illness is the second most concerning illness among young people. Add to the fact that UNICEF ranks Canada 27th out of 29 industrialized nations on obesity. When that stat was shared, 21 per cent of Canadians said it motivated them to personal action. That would amount to a significant amount of action, but it’s not enough. We hope through the stories you read in today’s themed edition and the stories you read online at www.insidetoronto.com or www. eastyorkmirror.com, you will be motivated to help preserve the health of young people who are part of your world. This may be the first generation of Canadians who do not live as long as their parents. That’s a hard concept to accept in a society where we generally are able to control many of the threats to our children’s health. We must not let that happen.

VOCA Chorus of Toronto offers music from the heart
W
e’re finally being blessed this spring by having some hot sunny days that are making up for the long cold winter we’ve just finished. We’ve had an explosion of colour in many of the gardens that are found in East York as flowers soak up the sun and have bloomed exceptionally well. Music comes to mind as one of the natural ways that we use to express our revived spirits at this time of year, either making it or listening to it. One of the nicest community contributors to this springtime celebration is the VOCA Chorus of Toronto (formerly the East York Choir.) Each year at this time they bring to the community a new and exciting musical exploration. The choir has been an important fixture in East York since 1988 and has blossomed under the musical direction of Jenny
joe cooper watchdog Crober. Another great contributor to the choir’s success has been Elizabeth Acker, who has provided piano and keyboard accompaniment for the choir for many years. Previous spring concerts have featured the music of many traditions found in different cultures, each of which were warmly received by their appreciative audiences. This next concert should prove to be no exception as the choir will be presenting an evening exploration of the various aspects of love through music and the spoken word. This will take place on Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eastminster United Church on Danforth Avenue. The evening will feature music about romantic love, betrayal/love gone wrong,
parental love (some very moving lullabies), love of nature, and love through friendship and support. The selections will range with the sublime (including three stunning works: Lauridsen’s Sure on this Shining Night, Healey Willan’s Rise Up, My Love, My Fair One, and Mark Miller’s I Believe. The songs will also include the very earthy Te Quiero and the Kenyan dance song Ning Wendete. These will be interspersed with several spoken word excerpts (Leonard Cohen, William Blake, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Rumi, and Shakespeare). There will also be selections by Billy Joel, The Beatles, a sprightly Thomas Morley madrigal, some tragic Monteverdi, a Rumi-inspired delight by Vancouver musician Ed Henderson and a gospelinspired arrangement of Bridge over Troubled Water. Guest artists include an actor who performs in stage
(including Soulpepper), TV and film productions - Deborah Drakeford - narration, along with some of the very finest musicians in the city: Ray Dillard - percussion; Rob Clutton - bass; Martin van de Ven - clarinet. Again, this celebration of song and music will take place at the Eastminster United Church, 310 Danforth Ave. west of the Chester subway station, which is located beside Carrot Common. Tickets for the concert are $25, $20 for seniors and $10 for students. Be certain to arrive early as tickets sell out quickly. There will also be a silent auction and raffle. Refreshments can be purchased at the same time. For more details, call www.vocachorus.ca, 647260-0740 or 416-463-8225. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. Griffin Centre: Doug Ford not the only NIMBY Whilst his brother cavorts about cottage country on day passes from addiction rehabilitation, it’s reassuring to see that Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford is keeping up the Ford name and all it stands for here in the city. As the Etobicoke Guardian’s Tamara Shephard reported last week, Doug Ford showed up – late – for a meeting at Toronto police’s 23 Division, to take on the Griffin Centre, a home for developmentally disabled youth on behalf of its angry neighbours. According to Shephard’s report, Ford told the staff of the centre that they had “ruined the community” in the Kipling Avenue and West Humber Boulevard area. The two-month-old centre is a house where four youth – some with autism – live under supervision. Some of the youth have behavioural issues that manifest in outbursts sometimes requiring police to attend. The staff at the centre sometimes park on the street. Sometimes, the youth who live in the centre are permitted outdoors. It was this last point that
david nickle the city seemed to shock the councillor, whom Shephard quotes thusly: “You can’t destroy a community like this. People have worked 30 years for their home... My heart goes out to kids with autism. But no one told me they’d be leaving the house. If it comes down to it, I’ll buy the house myself and resell it.” Later, he asked if any of the children were sex offenders (for the record: staff at the centre said none of them are). It’s difficult to know what to say about Doug and Rob Ford anymore. They have so debased the public discourse in the past year, that even when one of them passes an evening by stirring up an angry crowd to run a house for disabled youth out of town, it’s hard to properly admonish him. The men are scoundrels. We know it and they know it. But let’s leave Doug alone a moment, and ponder some
of the other comments that Shephard collected last Thursday night from those in attendance. “This is not a place for mental people. This is a residential area. Why don’t you build a house out on a farm?” “When my child says, ‘Mommy, why are there police here again?’ What do I say?” “This is a community for people, not for that.” Councillor Ford’s remarks ride the crest of that wave of unfortunate NIMBYism – and one might argue that his and his brother’s reign at Toronto City Hall were propelled by the same poisonous sentiment. In October, odds are good that voters will send the brothers Ford from Toronto City Hall – probably for good. But the insular, fearful, uncompassionate and fundamentally selfish sentiment on display at 23 Division last week – the sentiment that allowed the Fords in to begin with – it will take a great many years to rid ourselves of that.

East York family thanks hospital by taking part in walk Angeline Mair amair@insidetoronto.com A cheerful, blonde haired pre-schooler joyfully jumps and tumbles on the couch with his older brother in their East York home recently. Watching the brothers play you would never know that last September he had suffered a major head injury leaving him in the hospital for 25 days. Two years ago, when Nicholas Eaton was 20 months old, he fell from the playground and fractured his skull. “In the two seconds it took to get a better grip on him he fell on his head,” said his mom Stephanie. It was Easter Sunday and while her husband, Michael, was at home studying she took the boys to swimming lessons. They had some time before the lesson and mom and the boys decided to enjoy the local playground. That’s when Nicholas fell. Stephanie says, “When he fell part of his eye was starting to pop out and you could see his head was shifting. There wasn’t any blood. And we were lucky he didn’t lose consciousness,” Stephanie said. “Instinct kicked in and I scooped him up and I ran into the pool office. I got in

there and put him down and realized we needed to call an ambulance.” There was someone at the pool who could go and get Michael because he was at home studying outside and didn’t have the phone with him. Nicholas was rushed straight to the Hospital for Sick Children. “It started with a lot of people in the emergency room as they were trying to assess the situation,” Stephanie said. As parents they were feeling “pretty numb” to what was happening at that moment as their 20 month-old son lay on the table. “I can’t believe this is really happening. This is a TV movie,” Stephanie said of the experience. “It’s more shocking trying to assess what was going on, but you could tell there was some pretty deep concern,” Michael remembered.
However, he felt more at ease because, “one of the nurses’ aides was walking us through what was going on, which was really helpful. They call everyone in at the beginning because they need to assess the situation and then they decide who needs to stay.” Nicholas eventually had surgery after it was determined there was hemorrhaging on the brain and within an hour of arrival part of his skull was removed. “And a vein, which runs down the middle of your head, it had been damaged, so when the skull was removed there was a lot of blood and they had to stop,” explained Stephanie. The parents waited close to two hours as everything was very touch and go during the operation. Nicholas spent a couple of days in the intensive care unit and 21 days in the neurosurgery and head trauma floor. Because there was hemorrhaging, part of his skull was removed and kept in a freezer. He recovered quickly and was walking around - minus a piece of his skull. Nicholas didn’t need much rehab after the operation. “It all came back. Within a week — he was a little wobbly — but by the time he left the
hospital he was walking,” Stephanie said. After all, You can only keep a 20 month old in a hospital room for so many hours, she said. The next step was to put the bone back in his skull and it would be touch and go to see if it would take. “There was a possibility his body would reject it even though it was his own bone,” Stephanie said. The surgery was successful and Nicholas went home on Zachery’s birthday. He is OK developmentally, said mom, though “there was a fear” there may have been issues.
The Eaton family is so grateful for the treatment at SickKids that they wanted a way to give back and one way they were able to do this was by taking part in the inaugural Canaccord Genuity Great Camp Adventure Walk last September. “It was a very memorable day,” said Michael. The Eaton family walked the 20 kilometres together - including Nicholas who walked half a kilometre and enjoyed the rest of the time in his stroller. Michael said it was a fun day for a great cause and they are taking part in this year’s event on Sept. 27.
The walk is open to all to take part in. Visit http://www. support.sickkidsfoundation. com for more info. Healthy eating, cooking tips served up at East York program HILARY CATON eym@insidetoronto.com The volunteer-run and community-driven East York Community Initiative, formerly known as the East York Community Kitchen, is all about affordable, healthy eating habits. “We focus on nutrition and economical recipes. It’s important because not everybody has grown up with those skills to cook healthy,” said community kitchen co-ordinator and resident of Torrens Avenue, Jennifer Kim. “We want to show them it’s not hard to eat healthy.” The community kitchen launched six months ago through the South Riverdale Community Health Centre. According to Kim, the idea of a community kitchen took root after the Wellesley Institute in partnership with the South Riverdale Community Health Centre conducted a survey with residents in the area of Pape Village. The report called From Neighbourhood to Community: Health and Social Supports North of
the Danforth, revealed the primary aspects the area was lacking and one of them was food security. Two suggestions this came out of community the report: story community inspired by gardens the goal and comof having munity happy, kitchens. healthy Both interchildren ested the community, so the South Riverdale Community Health Centre got to work and garnered enough volunteers and funding to create the community kitchen. “The feedback has been really great and positive, so far,” said Kim. “A lot of people love the aspect of coming together and just meeting your neighbours.” Each cooking session has up to 15 participants and takes place once a month on Sundays at 1081 1/2 Pape Ave., from 3 to 6 p.m. with each session having a different theme. So far they’ve cooked Italian, Mexican and

Chinese to name a few. “A lot of people are really interested in ethnic food and that’s because you may love the take out but it’s not very healthy,” explained Kim. “So we do things you can recreate at home. We also try to focus as much as we can on seasonal eating.” Once the meals are cooked participants get the chance to sit down and chat with each other and enjoy the food they’ve made and if there are leftovers they get to take them home. Kim says the chosen cooking themes are based primarily on community feedback and recipes are suggested by a registered dietician with Toronto Public Health. But you won’t find any recipes for steak or chicken pot pie here, all meals are strictly vegetarian. “People are always surprised on what we can cook that’s vegetarian,” said Kim. Kim says the reason why it has been vegetarian is because it not only helps keep the cost of each coking session low, which is about $100, but it also encourages KIA CANADA AVERTISING CORRRECTION NOTICE

Desserts such as, vanilla roasted pears with chocolate sauce and pineapple coconut cake also get thrown into the mix. reaches labour agreements wTTC
Presented by
The TTC has reached labour agreements with four unions representing around 10,000 of its employees. The new four-year-contracts with the unions – including Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113 – were settled without proceeding to arbitration for the first time since 2008, notes a press release issued by the TTC over the Victoria Day weekend. Not many details are known about the new deals, although vehicle operators, fare collectors as well as maintenance workers will receive a pay raise of just over eight per cent over the life of the contract. Non-unionized workers will also receive slight pay increases. There are provisions to restrict job outsourcing.

Names for area park sought >>>from page 1 #NameOurPark. Preference will be given to names with historical significance or special meaning to Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth. Nominations close Monday, June 2. The community will then be invited to vote online for their favourite option. Currently known as “Forecourt Park”, the new green space will
replace the former Don Jail Roadway, which is just south of the historic Old Don Jail. The as-of-yet-unnamed 1.4-acre park, which has been in the works for more than five years, will feature native trees, bushes and ornamental plantings as well as a series of pathways, benches and lights. It will also include an underground water facility that is able to drain much
of the storm water from the Bridgepoint Health development. The new community green space, designed to be a place of quiet contemplation and respite, is being developed by Plenary Health/PCL for the City of Toronto. Contact Fletcher’s office at councillor_fletcher@ toronto.ca or 416-392-4060 for details.
