Alder Road to open new stairs to park RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Alder Road residents will soon have a new set of stairs to access Taylor Creek Park. After a two year period, a new set of concrete stairs will replace the worn out steps made from wood and asphalt, which according to Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis were in a “significant state of disrepair” and posed a safety hazard. Davis said she has worked since 2003, the year she was first elected, on replacing all of the approximately six sets of stairs leading into the park. She believes the new Alder steps, which will also have a bike track, will encourage residents to make use of Taylor Creek Park throughout the year. GREEN JEWEL

“Taylor Creek Park is a green jewel for our community and without those staircases there simply wouldn’t be much access or use made of the park, particularly in the winter,” said Davis on Tuesday. She said the process took two years to complete from design to construction. This Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Davis and representatives from the Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Department will take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new stairs. Demetrios Diplaros who was killed in Afghanistan with two other Canadian soldiers when the vehicle they were in was struck by a roadside bomb in December of 2008, will place a wreath at the base of the Branch 345 cenotaph in memory of her son and all others who lost their lives in the service of their country during a ceremony slated for midafternoon. Leon Jacques, spokesperson for the branch, felt that having a Silver Cross mother lay a wreath was a good way to honour both Diplaros who grew up in the southwest Scarborough area and his mother. “I just thought this is a woman we should honour. Her son lived and grew up within a mile or mile-anda-half from our legion,” he said. Jacques said that, for himself, Remembrance Day has never been a day he participated in because on Nov. 11 1939 his father died. Every Nov. 11, he can’t help but be

reminded of his father. Gerry Diplaros, father of Pte. Diplaros, will also place a wreath at Branch 345 on Sunday in memory of those who gave their lives for their country. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 345 is located 81 Peard Rd., on the west side of Victoria Park Avenue just north of St. Clair Avenue.
St. Barnabas Church is hosting a concert of secular and sacred music this Sunday at 4 p.m. in honour of Remembrance Day. Special guest is internationally known piper Rob Crabtree who will perform several tunes. His album The Piper’s Legacy was nominated for a Juno Award. The concert is being called Remembering and it features music from Canada, England, Wales and Scotland. It also features the church’s choir and soloists. Neil Houlton, director of music at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, said, “It’s the first time we’ve focused on Remembrance Day and especially since its on a Sunday it all fits together.” “We were learning stuff that was appropriate for Remembrance Day and I was looking for something to do this fall that was not overly demanding on the choir, because of

the program are O Canada, God Save the Queen and The Maple Leaf Forever, which he says, “Those of us of a certain age grew up singing everyday at school.” Alexander Muir, was inspired to write The Maple Leaf Forever by a maple tree he saw in the Leslie Street and Queen Street area. Scotland is represented by the bagpipe music and there will be a songs for pipes and organ, including Highland Cathedral and the Skye Boat Song. Songs from Wales are Men of Harlech and from Ireland is Danny Boy. “It’s always a tear jerker” Houlton said. A couple of poems, In Flanders Fields and Call to Remembrance, will also be read. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. There will be a sherry reception following the concert. St. Barnabas Church, 361 Danforth Ave., two blocks east of Broadview Avenue. Amalgamation topic frustrating

s recognition of our veterans a case of “out of sight, out of mind?” It shouldn’t be, but it’s a question worth asking. When it comes to Remembrance Day observance, there has been a noticeable shift in recent years. And it’s an inevitable one. Fewer and fewer veterans from earlier conflicts such as the Second World War and the Korean War are with us. Given the passage of time, there is always a risk of the importance of such obserour view vances being diluted for the next generation. This can’t happen. Too Support for much has been sacrificed. But with the ongoing conflict in our veterans Afghanistan, in which Canadians are playing and have played a still strong significant role, we have fresh, contemporary examples of the struggles our veterans endure – both during and after they serve. There is greater public awareness of post-battlefield conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that our veterans must cope with. The good news is Canadians have strong opinions on these issues. A recent Nanos survey says 94 per cent of Canadians believe we have an obligation to ensure modern veterans find meaningful employment after they’ve finished their service. Another 88.9 per cent believe all veterans, whenever and wherever they served, should be honoured on Remembrance Day, even though 82.1 per cent of Canadians think primarily of veterans of the First World War and the Second World War on Remembrance Day. And, 51.8 per cent believe the support veterans receive for conditions such as PTSD is inadequate. The survey was released by Commissionaires, an organization dedicated to ensuring “meaningful employment opportunities” for former members of the Canadian Forces and other organizations dedicated to safety and security. Issues such as employment opportunities for veterans aren’t necessarily front of mind in our collective consciousness. But they must be part of a growing realization that any investment in our country’s defence budget must take into greater consideration the effects – physical, mental, psychological – on those who serve our country. The survey results suggest we value the contributions of our veterans and believe more should be done for them. That’s good. Getting our voices heard to enable meaningful change for our modern veterans is the next step. Reach out to your Member of Parliament to make it known how you feel. To the editor: Re: ‘Party politics taking hold of Toronto,’ Watchdog, Oct. 25. Watchdog columnist Joe Cooper was complaining again about amalgamation, referring to “our forced amalgamation 10 years ago in 1997”. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it was a typo, but no, three paragraphs later he writes “10 years after”, four paragraphs later he writes “1997” again. There are a number of possibilities: Your columnist failed grade school arithmetic; he has no idea what year it is; your proofreaders failed miserably in editing this column. Cooper has written countless columns complaining about amalgamation. He has an annoying habit of giving a title and first paragraphs on one subject, then switching to amalgamation. I have been disappointed many times when I think he may have something new to say, but then complaining about amalgamation and how East York was so much better before. D. Martin
Obama’s election heralds time of rebuilding

ike many people around the world, I was exceptionally impressed by the reelection of Barack Hussein Obama as the President of the United States of America. Beyond the historical achievement of being the first person of AfroAmerican heritage to win the office of president, what was also important about the re-election was the core message that Obama spoke throughout his election campaign. In this Obama was exceptionally candid and he did not coat his words in rhetoric and clichés, but laid out the situation in stark terms. We are at war, he said, the economy is badly weakened due to greed and irresponsibility, and this has come about in great part due to a collective failure to make hard choices and prepare for the future.

After many years of a divisive ideological thinking that encouraged pointing the finger of blame on everyone else, it was with an honesty that was breath taking when Obama put forward his thesis. American society, as Obama clearly stated, is in a visible crisis that is sapping the confidence of the country and hindering its recovery as people retreat into fear, conflict and discord. One of the keys to unlocking the United State’s potential for recovery, Obama said, is to end the dysfunctional political thinking that is strangling politics and re-affirm those
ideals that work. President Obama’s stated formula for displacing our current crisis with social and economic prosperity is one that is fully applicable to Canada’s own situation. Plain and simple, if our country is to recover, then that recovery must be earned through work that must entail no short-cuts or compromise, and must be done in a courageous and risk-taking way. As he also said, the United States, and indeed the entire world, are now in a brand new age. An age where many long standing ideas and agendas no longer apply, and we need to use new tools to fix new problems. It is this perspective that Obama is bringing to American politics that provides Canadians with a sharp, clear criteria to judge our own affairs. Federally the government is being whittled down as more and
more power comes to be concentrated in the office of prime minster rather than in Parliament where it belongs. Our provincial government has been prorogued and will not move forward in a true democratic manner until next spring . What is clear is that President Obama understands the key to his country’s success is to believe in its institutions and to empower ordinary people, rather than focusing on benefiting a small economic elite with privileges. A society’s real wealth comes when all people can share in the collective benefits of an economy where all people’s hard work will be rewarded fairly and justly. n Joe Cooper is a longtime East York resident and community activist. here is a delicate balance between believing in something strongly and being willing to die for that belief. In wartime, that belief is put to the test for those who enlist to fight. Their belief is challenged by those who don’t want them to go and cause heartache for their loved ones if they do not return home. These scenarios are powerfully portrayed in the East Side Players Canadian premiere of My Boy Jack, a play by David Haig that tells the true story of what happens when the Kipling family is torn apart after their son goes missing during the First World War. From the beginning, emotions are high and the sides are clear: Mom, Carrie (Kelly Morrison) and sister Elsie (Hannah Drew) don’t want their son and brother, Jack (Joshua Mott), to enlist. Dad, famous author Rudyard Kipling (Daryn DeWalt), is a staunch supporter of the war and nothing would make him more proud than his son fighting for his country. Despite having severe myopia and technically not being allowed to enlist, Kipling uses his influence to get Jack in as a lieutenant. As young as he is, Jack is excited to leave the family fold and the giant shadow
cast by his father’s fame. Bateman’s, the Kipling’s secluded estate near Sussex, England where the majority of the play takes place, is creatively turned into the trenches soon after Jack leaves, bringing the audience into the throes of battle along with Jack and three members of the Irish Guards, McHugh (Rein Kartna) Doyle (Chris Quirke) and Bowe (Randy Pryce). It’s a long, loud and moving scene where the glory of battle shows the reality of how horrific it really is. The men are scared, anxious and praying to live another day. Eventually, Jack gives the order for the men to move forward and he’s never seen again. Anguish, divide, and obsession transpire next for the Kipling’s family as they continually interview soldiers, including Irish Guard Bowe, to try and piece together what happened to Jack. Pryce’s performance as the emotionally wounded and traumatized soldier, Bowe, is incredibly realistic, moving and powerful. You could hear a pin drop as he describes the last time he saw Jack. It’s so riveting you can actually “see” what he is saying. That being said, everyone brings their own version of remarkable to the stage. Morrison is moving and believable as the heartbroken, but determined, mother. >>>PLAY, page 9

Mott as the boy at the centre of it all, Jack, shows the perfect balance of innocence and determination, and DeWalt gives a powerful performance as a man unravelling. From strong and certain to
broken and wavering, his portrayal of Kipling and his journey is well-portrayed. Some of the best scenes in this show are Kipling family scenes, especially those between Elsie and Jack, who are obviously close, as adults and as children. One scene that takes the audience back to their father reading to the young Jack and Elsie (Jack Pryce, Bridget Morrison) is par-
ticularly touching. Original music composed by Jeff Vidov is heard throughout the show. Raw mood It’s hauntingly beautiful and adds to the sombre and raw mood of the story. This show tells a sad and heavy story so it may not be everyone’s

s it fair to say that we’re into a crisis of confidence in big municipal government in eastern Canada? Or if not government, then mayors? Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay lent some truth to this this week when he quit his job over allegations of corruption within his party — allegations he firmly denies. And here in Toronto ... well, Rob Ford’s not resigning over corruption allegations. But there are a couple of bus-loads of commuters – who stood out in the rain last Thursday after their Finch Avenue buses were rerouted to provide shelter to Ford’s football team – who probably wish he would step down. The question for Mayor Ford is just what job he should quit. And really, the best thing that he could do is follow Tremblay’s example – and quit coaching football. In the meantime, it’s made him into a truant at council, as he leaves to coach his team at Etobicoke’s Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School while council and his committee deal with key city business. And now, this business with the TTC buses that were re-routed. As I write this, it’s unclear how exactly passengers ended up

Ford has shown in all sorts of ways that his team is a priority for him. Priorities At times, it seems as though it’s a bigger priority than his constituents. It may well be that this isn’t so. But it also shouldn’t appear so. That is something that Tremblay understood as he resigned from office. Mayor Ford shouldn’t resign from office over his love of football. But he should recognize that it has become more than a distraction from his day job. It has cumulatively destroyed confidence in his office. the Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets. It is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Forces. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship. Royal Canadian Sea Cadets learn about the naval and maritime environment by participating in a variety of activities on and off the water. Sea Cadets specialize in sailing, seamanship, shipboard life, naval communications, power boat handling, boat repair, and marine engineering. Selected senior cadets have the opportunity to attend international exchanges, to sail aboard a Tall Ship or participate in ship deployments aboard Canadian Navy and Coast Guard ships. The Royal Canadian Army Cadets appeal to teenagers craving exciting outdoor activities. Army cadets develop abilities in the use of map and compass, GPS technology, orienteering, first-aid, camping and survival skills, canoeing, abseiling, trekking, mountain biking, etc. As they get more experienced, some will be selected for parachuting, white-water rafting and glacier climbing. They will also learn to become outdoor leaders. Royal Canadian Air Cadets participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities. The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills for flight crew. The athlete will appreciate physical education and recreation, including a variety of sporting activities like biathlon and Olympic-style marksmanship. The artists will find their niche in the music program. The curious will appreciate the hands-on activities such as building model aircraft. The scholarly will appreciate an introduction to the various tools and technologies linked to aviation. The dreamers will appreciate the evolution of technology and the advancements of the aerospace era, including the importance of Canadian participation. Select top senior cadets may even earn the chance to represent Canada on the world stage by
participating in an international exchange. Most importantly, Air Cadets aids in developing knowledge of Canadian history and democracy. The wprogram focuses on social development, decisionmaking and leadership. As cadets acquire skills and knowledge, they pass it along to younger cadets. pedestrians not to talk on cellphones or text while crossing the street as part of a week-long safety campaign

The fine for jaywalking is $50. “I think if pedestrians can have a better understanding of driver behaviour that will keep them safer,” said West. “Drivers at intersections quite often are anxious: they want to make a left turn, they’re watching for the

Celebrating its 20th year anniversary, the annual December concert is not only back after a one-year hiatus last year, but back at the Danforth Music Hall, which has seating for more than 1,100.
