Danforth/Morton building plan unveiled to residents TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Residents got a first look at plans for a mixed-use development at Danforth Avenue and Morton Road, during a community consultation meeting Monday. Approximately 40 people attended the meeting held by Danmor Developments Limited, which wants to build an eight-storey, 12,568-squaremetre residential and commercial building at the southwest corner of the intersection, 2301 to 2315 Danforth Ave. The meeting at the Danforth/ Coxwell Library was held at the request of Councillor Joe Mihevc, who is representing Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon in the matter. McMahon, who lives near the site, was excused to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. “The purpose of the meeting really was to introduce the project to the community,” said Mihevc. “I thought it was a respectful, good community conversation that was initiated.” Danmor needs a rezoning approval for the 27-metre building, which it applied for Oct. 26, the basis for the meeting. The current zoning caps building heights at 14 metres, but the city’s Official Plan encourages mid-rise growth

along the city’s major avenues, including Danforth. “You have two documents, one suggests that it is the right height, another one that has the existing zoning bylaw at 14 metres,” noted Mihevc. “That’s what staff will have to evaluate over the next little while, and then council as well.” The proposed building includes 166 residential units plus ground-floor retail, along with 100 street-level and underground parking spaces. So far, only the rezoning application has been filed, but a full application is in the works. As planning documents are submitted, they will be publicly available through www.toronto.ca/planning At the meeting, Mihevc said residents’ concerns included the building’s height and materials. “There’s a lot of glass on this development, some feel that that’s not appropriate, some feel that it is appropriate,” he said. “The glass, and the way the face on Danforth goes up six storeys, some wondered whether it could be tucked back, stepped back, at an earlier floor.” C o n c e r n s w e re a l s o expressed about a rear laneway access, and plans to include live-work units where workers can live above ground-floor businesses.

“Some people liked the modernist look of the building,” Mihevc added. “Some people felt that it wasn’t architecturally creative enough.” City staff will consider residents’ comments and release their recommendations in a report. Mihevc isn’t saying yet if he thinks the development is appropriate for the area. “It’s frankly too early for me to weigh in,” he said. “Especially given that this is not my ward, I want to, of course, hear from the planners, I want to hear from the public, and I’ll weigh in at a later time.” Residents can provide comments and sign up to receive meeting announcements through the rezoning application notice at http://bit. ly/1PnzNXD or by contacting the city clerk’s office at clerk@ toronto.ca or 416-392-8016. Mihevc encouraged people to give him feedback as well, at councillor_mihevc@toronto. ca or 416-392-0208. “It’s the beginning, it’s step one in a comprehensive review, but in a process that is going to unfold over the upcoming months,” he said. “If you want to use the dance image – the parties have been introduced, and now they have to decide whether a good partnership and a good dance can happen.”

Talk alone won’t solve Toronto’s drug problem

Write us

T

he war on drugs may be nearing an end, but the war of words on drugs is just getting started. At last week’s Toronto council meeting, a debate on banning hookahs in Toronto business establishments couldn’t go for long before handwringing questions about the implications of legalized marijuana would have on such a ban. Toronto’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown told councillors again and again that the fulfillment of the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau government’s promise to legalize the drug wouldn’t have much impact on this ban one way or another. But that didn’t stop the rhetoric. It is an easy target for fear-monour view gering politicians, pot legalization. What terrible things might happen Address the when Toronto residents are granted easier, consequence-free overdose access to the long-unlawful, arguably, unhealthy drug? epidemic Here’s the thing: Torontonians are already ingesting substances illegal and legal that cause different degrees of harm. And Toronto has been dealing with that reality for a decade now, through the Toronto Drug Strategy. On Monday, McKeown provided an update on the city’s attempts to deal with problems that arise from addiction, experimentation and overdose in the city. Overdose right now is the big problem faced by public health officials. Over the past 10 years, death by drug overdose has increased by 41 per cent and is now the second largest cause of death for young people. (Vehicle collisions remain the first.) The culprit in the overdose spike is a resurgence in popularity for opiates like heroin – highly addictive and so difficult to discourage with the threat of arrest and long jail sentences. The Drug Strategy’s implementation board has come up with a partial solution: POINT, a Toronto Public Health program to prevent overdoses. POINT distributes a kit for delivering Naxolone, a drug that can reverse the fatal effects of an overdose if administered immediately. So far, 2,000 kits have been distributed, and the drug has been used 300 times. More lives might be saved if the province and federal government passed a Good Samaritan law so that people present at an overdose can call 911 without fear of arrest themselves. That won’t solve things either, but that is the reality: when it comes to drug use and abuse, there’s no solution, just mitigation. And no amount of talk will change that.

Sizing up garbage in Toronto is getting tiring ‘If this is what you do with an extra large garbage bin, Toronto, maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to have one.’ When Toronto homeowners moved from old-fashioned garbage bags and cans to a payas-you-throw bin system under former mayor David Miller, Torontonians went along with it gamely. The plan was intended to encourage us to recycle and use our green bins, in the spirit of extending the life of Toronto’s landfill capacity without getting into the dirty business of incineration. It had some secondary benefits, too, many of them to the health and well-being of Toronto’s solid waste workers, and also to the gradual elimination of their jobs. The bins were designed to be emptied mechanically, which meant trucks

david nickle the city might one day be operated by a smaller crew, and no one on that crew would have to lift heavy garbage cans filled with whoknows-what into the back of their trucks. The other thing, of course, was the bins came in different sizes and that allowed the city to move over to a somewhat measurable pay-as-you-throw system, taking garbage off the property tax bill and providing financial incentive for homeowners to divert more effectively. Trouble is, the system was only somewhat more measurable. Homeowners paid more for the biggest garbage bin on the presumption they would throw away bags and bags of garbage each pickup, rather than the occasional large load and otherwise smaller loads.

column

Celebrate fall in the wetlands Have you ever wondered why the southern boundary of the borough of East York was so uneven? It has been a point of curiosity the way that it zigzagged above the Danforth in what appeared to be an illogical manner. There actually was a reason for its raggedy appearance, and it didn’t have anything to do with bad planning or poor decision making: it follows the outer watershed of Taylor-Massey Creek. Back when much of East York and the municipal lands to the south of it were open fields, such a division line was unmistakable. Today we’ve lost that sense of connection with the land, and the creeks and rivers that run through it, now everything is developed. That sense of disconnection reached its peak in the 1950s when urban developers tried to turn the creek into a sewer. As a result, 10 sewer outfalls and 252 storm sewers empty into the waterway, making it one of the most polluted

joe cooper watchdog creeks in Ontario. It was nearly paved over as it had been designated as an access route to the Don Valley Parkway, but, thanks to East Yorkers like True Davidson and Charles Sauriol, that initiative was stopped. While the creek was saved, it wasn’t protected, as well intentioned people tried to turn it into a park. Anyone who has walked along the trails in the park has seen how underground springs, which feed the creek, have been cut off. The water flows across the paved trails and makes the ground around the creek soft and muddy. The area around the creek is a natural wetland, whose purpose is to filter the ground water and provide a habitat for plants and animals. In 2003, the volunteer group Friends of the Don undertook the restoration of Taylor Massey Creek to its natural

heritage. Partnered with more than 20 organizations, the group has planted 3,550 trees and collected more than 1,300 bags of garbage over the past five years. The group has also initiated the regeneration of four wetland areas along the creek, which will help rehabilitate the natural environment. This has involved increasing the number of native plants and trees, building natural habitats and creating a viewing trail. So even though many leaves have fallen off the trees, it’s still a good time to enjoy the pleasures of the ravine. Likewise you get to see the interesting changes to the natural foliage of the ravine as it goes into its fall mode with many different types of seeds being displayed. Soon it will be winter so take the time to enjoy the fall season as it will soon be under its canopy of snow. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. East York family seeks help after ‘pricelesss’ engagement ring lost JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Long-time East York resident Aino Lott is distraught after losing one of the last remaining connections to her late husband of 66 years, John. On Saturday, Lott, who is 89, was hurrying to make it to the Don Valley Drugstore at 855 Broadview Ave., just north of Pretoria Avenue, before it closed at 2 p.m. Somehow along the way, her engagement ring slipped off her tiny finger. Lott, who has lived in a condo on Broadview Avenue just south of Pottery Road for about 15 years, immediately retraced her steps, but wasn’t able to locate her gold ring, which has a large square-cut aquamarine stone. Her daughter Karin Kaus and husband Marshall, as well as her other daughter Linda, came over a short time later to help look for their mother’s priceless piece. Marshall even returned the next morning to no avail. “Mom is really sad and upset about it because of the sentimental value,” Kaus said Tuesday, Nov. 10 morning. “She’s been looking for it

An East York family is seeking the public’s help to find an engagement ring (above left) lost on Broadview Avenue north of Pretoria Avenue. The ring belongs Aino Lott, who received it by her late husband, John, more than six decades ago. The couple is shown at their 1948 wedding.

every day.” The loss is especially upsetting as Lott’s husband passed away in July. The couple, who had both fled Estonia after the Second World War, met in Sweden where they were married on Dec. 31, 1948. The Lotts would have celebrated their 67th anniversary this New Year’s Eve. In an effort to find her mom’s unique ring, Kaus has posted on a few local facebook groups as well as

on Kijiji and Craigslist. She’s also contacted the police to file a report, but so far nothing has turned up. “I’m hopeful. You never know,” Kaus said, urging people who rake up leaves to check for the ring before they throw the leaves out. Anyone with any information about the missing ring is asked to email Karin Kaus at kmkaus@gmail.com.

Leaside Wildcats unbeaten string comes to an end The Leaside Wildcats status as the last remaining undefeated team in the 20-team junior Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) finally came to an end on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to the host Whitby Jr. Wolves. Leaside dropped to 8-1-1, still the best percentage in the PWHL. Whitby, who lost last year’s PWHL playoff championship, improved to 8-2-2. Leaside had given its home fans plenty to cheer about Saturday night, earning what turned out to be the final win of its impressive unbeaten

string, 3-1 over the visiting Etobicoke Dolphins at Leaside Arena. Leaside is on the road for its next three games before kicking off a fourgame homestand at Leaside Arena Sunday, Nov. 22 against last year’s playoff champion Stoney Creek Sabres. High School runner wins ofsaa silver wLeaside

It wasn’t a memorable football season for East York high schools this season with one exception. And that’s the Leaside High School Lancers junior team which has made the Toronto District School Board final-four being held today (Thursday) at Esther Shiner Stadium. Leaside (4-1) plays Richview (4-0) at 3 p.m., preceded by the other junior semifinal at 1 p.m. between Northern (5-0) and Etobicoke (3-1).

The winners are slated to play in the TDSB junior championship Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Birchmount Park at 1 p.m. (to be followed by the senior Tier 2 final at 3 p.m.). On the senior side, it was an off-year for both Leaside HS (0-5) and East York CI (1-4), who have previously appeared in city finals. The only win between the two of them this year came against each other, East York winning the annual rivalry 22-14. Both then proceeded to lose their 4th/5th place preliminary round playoff games.
