REMEMBRANCE DAY IN EAST YORK: An honour guard stands at the cenotaph during Remembrance Day ceremonies at the East York Civic Centre Memorial Gardens on Tuesday. For story and more photos, please see page 3.

A Leaside resident is upset with the city’s “lack of respect” after work crews began digging up her street without any warning. As a result of the construction work, Rosea Lonsdale and many of her neighbours on Donlea Drive can’t get in and out of their driveways. “Our notice (for the work) was hearing the sound effects this morning,” Lonsdale said Friday. “About 8:40 (a.m.) they brought in a digger. By 10:30 there was a hole about 10 inches deep across the bottom of my driveway.” What made things worse was the response Lonsdale got when she called 311, the city’s 24-hour general inquiries hotline. “She was annoyed that I asked about it,” Lonsdale said of the person who answered her 311 call. >>>NO, page 12

East York remembers at cenotaph ceremony Mark A. cadiz mcadiz@insidetoronto.com Hundreds gathered around the cenotaph in Memorial Gardens Park in East York Tuesday morning to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom. As the sounds of bag pipes and drums filled the warm autumn air onlookers respectfully lined the parade route, while decorated veterans stood strong in uniform. “It’s a day for all the veterans, it’s a big day,” said Myer Goobie, 93, who served in the Second World War. Goobie sharply dressed in a red blazer pinned with military medallions served on the first Special Forces team through 1942 to 1945, known as “The Devil’s Brigade.” “We were specially trained troops from the U.S. and Canada…we did everything,

whatever they wanted we were into it,” he said. After Canada declared war with Germany on Dec. 10, 1939, Goobie, originally from the Maritimes, had just turned 18 before he went overseas in 1939. Eventually he underwent special operations training to be part of

the 1,800 men of The Devil’s Brigade. Second World War Veteran Joe Gagné, 90, belonged to the Royal Canadian Engineers and he has attended the East York ceremony for years. “I was a sapper for three years. We had to re-build the bridges that the Germans

blew up, they were called Bailey bridges,” he said. Sappers were combat engineers who were responsible for all military engineering duties during the war. Bailey bridges were used extensively in the war to provide a crossing for soldiers, war tanks and other military equipment.

Among the diverse crowd there were many families with young children. Szilvia Eross and her daughter Chiara were at the ceremony. “I think it’s important that my daughter is here. I don’t think she completely understands, but she gets the idea

that we are paying respect to the people who died for us making it possible for us to live the lives we live,” she said. There is no doubt the recent deaths of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent served as a harsh reminder of the tragedies of war, as hundreds more than in recent years stood up at the 11th hour. Goobie who served until the end of the Second World War still managed to keep a smile throughout. You could sense his pride and sorrow for his fallen comrades, but also his hope as he joked around with other veterans. “When I came back from overseas in 1945 I was out for only a month, then afterwards I joined the Air Force,” said Goobie, who served for 31 more years.

Effect change by capitalizing on shared experiences, resources

Write us

W

e’ve said it before, that if you’re unsatisfied with something or desire change in this city, you need to speak up about it. But better than that, the best way to effect change is to do it with a united front. There’s strength in numbers, but also strength in shared experiences and resources. This week we’ve seen great examples of that in stories we’ve covered. In Etobicoke, Glen Agar residents, concerned about the intensification of development in their neighbourhood, banded together and formed a new ratepayers’ association. “We must have a say in the decisions that affect our neighbourhood,” reads their mandate. “No politician or city staffer has a more vested interest in how our community is growing and our view shaping than each and everyone of us.” Work together On Monday evening, a group called WSIC (Why Should I Care?) to create based out of North York held a forum on transit and urban planchange ning. Motivated by the desire to engage and inform, the group hosts public meetings like this to spur discussion and show citizens why municipal affairs matter to them. In Parkdale, the Ossington BIA recently became official, choosing its first board members. The BIA formed after business owners saw a need to manage the transformation of the Ossington strip and mitigate relations with residents and area developers. And in another show of productive collaboration, transit advocacy groups and the airport workers’ union rallied together in order to push for affordable fares on the upcoming Union-Pearson air rail link. In forming the Our Union Pearson Coalition, the group offers one collective point of view, backed by the voices and experience of thousands. Where groups can learn from each other, share best practices and experiences is where issues will be most effectively resolved. Discover who shares that common interest or has an investment in your area and bring everyone to the table to make the most impact. BIAs can assist resident associations. Issue-related advocacy groups may find a wealth of resources in grassroots community groups. Politicians, school board trustees, police liaison committees – there’s no shortage of people to turn to, when you’re looking to strengthen your cause. Find our stories on these collaborations at www. insidetoronto.com

column

Remembering the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our continued freedom I a t t e n d e d t h i s y e a r’s Remembrance Day service at the East York Civic Centre. As usual it was a moving ceremony that brings the community together in a special moment. It is always a sombre moment, and it certainly brings into focus what our real relationship is to war. Imperfect world There is no celebration of war here, but an understanding we live in an imperfect world – a world where from time to time we are called upon to stand up to those forces that would take away peace. A world where we are called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice of our lives in order that peace be regained. The shame of war is that it’s the young and strong who are most often called upon to make that sacrifice.

joe cooper watchdog Young men, and often young women as well, who are asked to give up their innocence and witness horrors most of us will never have to experience. Young men of the past who lost their lives and were horribly wounded in battles that we can never imagine. We have our ceremonies and our symbols such as the blood red poppy that remind us of the sacrifices that were made. There are the poems and the songs and benedictions that are said that speak of our feelings for the dead and wounded. We show our respect with polite silence for two minutes as we stand at attention at 11 a.m. as the airplanes fly overhead in

formation. Each one of us thinks our private thoughts as that silence passes by and feels our own sense of loss and sadness. We imagine in our minds the images of the poppies in Flanders Fields blowing between the cross, row on row as the poem is read. And we say, as the minister intones “From the curse of war and the sins of human beings that causes war; O God, deliver us.” Core values Yes, the words make us think and fortunately in our democratic society it is for this basis that we have our military – not as an instrument of horror or power, but as a means that will allow us to sleep peacefully at night and live our lives in freedom. No, we’re not perfect and there are times when we’ve

lost sight of these values and have become our own worst enemies. Still as long as we have these remembrance ceremonies, we renew our core values of what our true values as a society are, which is to value peace above all and to resort to war as only a last resort and when doing so to understand what war truly means. Likewise, when we do go to war, to value each of the lives that are sacrificed and to remember each one individually and to not take a single one for granted. Each life represents a son or daughter who belongs to a family and a community and whom will be remembered forever more. Lest we forget. DOWNTOWN HYUNDAI

Tory must speak firmly to feds on transit During the election campaign, John Tory repeatedly said he would “shame” other levels of government into paying for big-ticket items beyond the scope of the property tax base. Specifically, things like housing and transit. Just a few weeks following the election, mayor-elect Tory seems to be waffling. When asked Monday whether he would turn transit into an election issue in the looming federal election, Tory chuckled. After having finished a municipal election, he joked, “The last thought I have is getting involved in another one.” It’s disappointing. Tory, with his Rolodex full of contacts and relationships, might be the city’s most effective advocate when dealing with other levels of government. Surely the best time to bring that advocacy to a government is as it heads into an election and therefore has the most at stake. That Tory seems unwilling to do so is puzzling. A benign explanation might be that he simply doesn’t

Peter Messenger, Owner A1 Air Conditioning & Heating

david nickle the city wish to be seen following the Toronto Transit Commission’s union leadership, who made the call earlier Monday as it released a report indicating the poverty of our transit system and the need for federal and provincial investment. But the theory advanced by failed candidate Doug Ford – that Tory’s relationships are as much a constraint as they are an advantage – is another explanation. Tory’s candidacy was endorsed by sitting politicians of both Liberal and Conservative persuasion. Taking a firm stance in the context of an election involving the careers of those politicians, after they’d been so kind... well, it’s just bad manners. Hopefully Tory’s reticence to bring up awkward truths with old friends, particularly in concert with natural opponents like the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, is a temporary thing. Because it is

going to take some hard talk to engage the current federal government on municipal issues to any degree. Left to his own devices, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is more likely to fight the coming election on tax policy and the country’s military adventure against ISIS. Municipal matters are outside of the federal government’s wheelhouse as a rule, and they’ll stay that way unless municipalities make noise. That noise need not be confrontational. Former mayor David Miller negotiated significant improvements in financing and governance with both former premier Dalton McGuinty and former prime minister Paul Martin. Miller was polite but not silent. Tory needs to find his own voice, speaking firmly about Toronto’s unmet needs, and assigning responsibility for the fulfillment of those needs correctly, with the governments who have the greatest capacity to raise and disperse funds.

your opinion of GO Transit buses wOffer There’s less than a week to provide feedback on bus service provided by GO Transit. The regional transit provider issues a survey every two years inviting customers to sound off on its bus service. Anyone who takes the survey between now and Tuesday, Nov. 18 will have a chance to win one of 10 GO travel vouchers worth $250 each. To take the online survey, visit www.gobussurvey.com is there a RAT PROBLEM DOWNTOWN? Rats may be on the move around Union Station. A pest control company issued a press release this week stating, “the demolition and construction of several underground structures at Union Station has displaced a large rat colony, forcing its migration to new areas of the downtown.” However, TTC and Metrolinx spokespeople told the media they have not received reports of

Want to learn about various city-building initiatives taking place in the Toronto region while enjoying an alcoholic beverage or two? You’ll get your chance at a networking event taking place later this month. The first City Builders Soiree takes place at Spirits Bar & Grill, located near Church and Bloor streets, Tuesday, Nov. 25. The event, co-hosted by the networking organization Designing Toronto, prom-

ises the opportunity to connect planning professionals with community-minded individuals seeking advice on creating city-building projects. For details, visit www. designingtoronto.ca TO ADDRESS BOARD OF TRADE wBYFORD

TTC CEO Andy Byford will address the Toronto Region Board of Trade this month. It’s not known exactly what Byford will discuss during his appearance on Friday, Nov. 28, but in recent months he’s made public statements calling for better government funding of the cash-strapped TTC. Byford also said he supported a recent plan announced by TTC union president Bob Kinnear that includes purchasing 250 buses as well as making transit funding a key issue during the 2015 federal election. The construction notice, dated May 5, stated that watermain replacement on Donlea Drive from Rumsey to Brentcliffe roads would take place between May 20 and Aug. 30. “Your co-operation and patience during the construction period is crucial and appreciated,” the notice said. “The work will include excavation of trenches and access pits, watermain installation, water service reconnection to the new watermain including replacement of substandard water services (those that are not up to current standards) and restoration of road surface and all other areas disturbed during construction.” No watermain work was ever done between May 20 and Aug. 30. home on Friday. “My concern is nobody was aware that this was happening until the equipment got here,” Lonsdale said. “I think it shows a tremendous lack of respect.” Samuel Jebakumar, a senior engineer with the city, said he’s waiting for the project’s end date to be finalized before he sends out an updated construction notice to residents. “I’m reviewing the schedule,” he said. “The contractor has given some dates and that’s not what we want. We want to advance it, and finish it earlier than that.”

But why not send a notice prior to starting the work even if the city doesn’t know its completion date? “That’s a good question,” Jebakumar said. “We should have done that, but we are going to do that pretty soon.” Jebakumar said he hopes to have the project completed by March. Lonsdale said she’s happy that the city is changing the watermains but wishes there had been better communication. “Communication is really important,” she said.
