East York hosts Rotary auction

Robots Rule

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com David Pyette wants bargain hunting shoppers planning to head across the border for Black Friday sales to consider the deals up for grabs at this weekend’s Metro Toronto Rotary Auction which will be based out of the East York Civic Centre. More than 900 items are scheduled for bidding for this weekend’s auction, which will be telecast live on Rogers TV from Nov. 23-24. Pyette, the auction’s communications chair, believes the discounts on everything from sports tickets to appliances will far outweigh those that can be found across the border. Bargains available

“There’s no reason for Toronto shoppers to shuffle off to Buffalo this year to take advantage of sales because we will beat them right here at this auction,” said Pyette. “People can get stuff for up to 60 per cent off. The starting price is around 30 per cent of item value and goes up from there, so there’s >>>ROTARY, page 3

Revenge of the Nerds literacy event planned for East York Adult literacy is strictly for the nerds tonight when an East York non-profit group invites people to “a fun nerd-themed night out” on

Danforth Avenue. The East York Learning Experience says four of 10 Canadian adults struggle with low literacy, and one in

six lack skills to do basic banking. EYLE provides one-on-one tutoring in these skills, which nerds presumably have.

It’s inviting pub-goers to “dress up and embrace their inner nerd” for a benefit at Eton House on Danforth Avenue from 7 to 11 p.m. There will

be prizes for the best costumes. Tickets are $5, or $7 at the door. Reserve a spot by emailing inforevengeofthenerds@gmail.com

Eastern Commerce’s Hill signs with Virginia Tech National junior hoops team member Samantha Hill returned to Eastern Commerce Collegiate on Tuesday, and, no doubt, the school team wished it could have been for more than just a short visit to mark an important milestone. Not that the powerhouse hoops program hasn’t rallied together in the absence of their star player who graduated in the spring. At the city level, after all, they just completed a perfect season last week, winning their third straight Toronto District School Board (TDSB) championship with a 44-30 win over Northern Secondary. But that hasn’t earned them a lot of respect at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial 4A girls championship, which runs today through Saturday in London. They’re ranked a lowly 10th out of the 16 teams, just ahead of Northern at 11th. Pope John Paul from Scarborough is ranked ninth. Hill, meanwhile, was at the school, where she was a four-time honour student and athlete of the year, for the official signing of a full U.S. college athletic scholarship to Virginia Tech University this fall. On the hardcourt, she helped the Lady Saints to OFSAA appearances in three of her four years – winning gold in 4A in her Grade 9 year (in 2008). A multi-sport athlete she was also good enough to compete for Eastern Commerce at OFSAA in both cross country and track and field.

Samantha Hill is headed to Virginia Tech University on a full basketball scholarship next year. The 2012 Eastern Commerce grad returned to her old gymnasium Tuesday to officially sign her national letter of intent. She is currently doing a prep year at New Jersey’s Blair Academy before starting her freshman season of NCAA Division 1 hoops in the fall of 2013.

Her final athletic accomplishment for the school just before she graduated this past spring was a fourth-place finish at OFSAA in the 800m race, just missing out on a

podium appearance. Over the summer, Hill was a member of Canada’s U18 national basketball team that qualified for the 2013 U19 World Championships

in Lithuania. VOLLEYBALL: Danforth Tech lost the battle of perfect teams in the TDSB boys 3A volleyball championship 3-1 to Etobicoke Collegiate.

As a result the Etobicoke school is competing at the OFSAA 3A championships Nov. 22 to 25 in Kingston. See our photos from the volleyball on page 8.

Rotary Club Auction begins on Friday >>>from page 1 all sorts of great bargains.” Proceeds from the past Metro Toronto Rotary Auctions have gone towards local charitable groups including the East York Children’s Breakfast Club, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest and many others.

Five Rotary clubs

Volunteers Gord Dobbin, foreground, and David Pyette sort through donations Saturday for the upcoming Rotary Auction fundraiser. Items can be found on www.metrotorontorotaryauctions.com this week before the auction takes place this weekend.

Pyette said the five Rotary clubs taking part in this year’s edition, including the East York chapter, are hoping to raise around $100,000, the same target as last year. But this year, an ongoing labour dispute outside the clubs’ control could affect how much money is raised. “This year we are slightly handicapped by the NHL lockout,” said Pyette. “Toronto loves its Leafs and the most attractive items have always

been Leafs tickets and memorabilia. We still have a few of those items but not nearly as we would have had the lockout not taken place.” In addition to hockey items, the auction, in its 33rd year, will also offer a pair of tickets to this Sunday’s Grey Cup, Blue Jays and Raptors tickets plus smart phones, jewellery, tools, golf items, vacation packages and more. There’s even a high efficiency furnace valued at $5,000, the most expensive item on the block. “We have a myriad of things,” said Pyette. “We need people to step up and watch so we can help the many causes we support.” The auction will be aired live on Friday evening until midnight and all day and night Saturday. For more information visit www. rotaryclubauction.com or call the auction’s info line at 416-5088382.

Celebrate city’s history, links to the Grey Cup

T

his Sunday’s Grey Cup is more than just an opportunity to experience an annual celebration of a storied Canadian tradition. For Torontonians, this city is on display as the rest of the country watches. Being the 100th game, it’s a milestone event and we should be proud to be hosts. But the football game is also an opportunity for us to re-connect with and celebrate the city’s rich history in the sport. our view The first Grey Cup game was played at Toronto’s Rosedale Field First Grey Cup on Dec. 4, 1909. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the game played Parkdale Canoe Club 26-6. in Toronto Of the 100 Grey Cup games, Toronto’s hosted nearly half of them at places such as Varsity Stadium, Exhibition Stadium and now the Rogers Centre. In addition to the Varsity and Parkdale teams – as well as the Argonauts – Toronto also once had a Balmy Beach team competing. Players such as Ted Reeve (a former Argonaut and Balmy Beach player) are enshrined in the city’s sporting history. Reeve’s name now adorns a sports facility in East York. Much has changed as Canadian football has evolved. While interest in the Argonauts may have waxed and waned in recent years, the city’s connection to football remains strong. There’s a number of Toronto youth teams in the Central Ontario Minor Football League. Several high schools offer playing opportunities at different levels of competition and two universities, York and U of T, have varsity teams. A number of players on both of Sunday’s championship finalists, the Calgary Stampeders and the Argonauts, also have connections to the city. The great thing is, there are ways to celebrate and re-connect with the sport even if you don’t have tickets to the game. There are plenty of ancillary events taking place in the city. Also, treat this game as an opportunity to reach out to friends with whom you’ve had a connection through the sport. Perhaps you went to games together or watched them on television or played together in high school. When people get together, events like these can unite citizens and neighbourhoods. Friendships can be rekindled. New relationships can be forged. By hosting the milestone event, Toronto and its historic connection to Canadian football is being recognized. We should take this opportunity to renew and refresh the friendships that developed through our own connections to the sport. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: Re: ‘Obama’s eletion heralds time for rebuilding,’ Watchdog, Nov. 8. Yes, I get The Mirror’s resident leftist NDP cheerleader Joe Cooper hates all things conservative (Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Mayor Rob Ford, U.S. Republicans, capitalists). In his fawning to President Barack Obama’s reelection, he claims Obama’s recipe for America’s economic future will require “...work that must entail no short-cuts or compromise...” and that “...we need to use new tools to fix new problems.” Would these “no-compromise new tools” include: n Making “recess appointments” when Congress was not in recess? n Appointing “czars” (responsible only to the president, not confirmed by the Senate? That smacks of a wannabe dictator, but maybe Cooper’s OK with that, as long as it’s a lefty doing it? Mike Minnich

Preserving city’s open spaces is important to residents

D

uring the past week I had the opportunity to take a break and get out of town, and I decided to spend a week near Algonquin Park. Frankly, I needed to get away from the on-going pressures that have descended upon Toronto and just spend some time in solitude and quiet. East York does provide an oasis of quiet when compared to the rest of the city, but even with that there comes a time for a change of scenery. I’ve always enjoyed the fall time when out in the country, not just for the change of colour of the leaves, but due to the simple fact there are no biting or stinging insects. I’m also a fan of off season travelling due to the fact that there are fewer people, particularly those who persist in bringing the noises of the city with their motor toys and loud music. The Halliburton Highlands and Algonquin Park has

watchdog

always been special for Ontario with its Canadian Shield landscape being a source of never ending beauty for me and many others. However, I remember the controversy that occurred a few years ago when a slice of rock from the Canadian Shield was used to create a unique park space in downtown Toronto. Located in Yorkville, the park has become a favourite spot for many who simply want a place to go other than the standard trees and grass park and enjoy a brief contact with raw nature. Yet we had the usual outrage being expressed by a vocal minority of people who looked at the price tag and ignored the

value such a project has had for many people. We’re running into the same problem today with the Toronto District School Board who are looking at selling off “empty land” at various schools. Congested city The intent is understandable from a bean counter point of view because that land, when sold, will add the finances needed to keep existing schools operating properly. Yet the end result will be the further diminishing of open spaces in an increasingly crowded and congested city. A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit Japan and spent time in the true megacity of Tokyo which has a population near that of Canada. Despite the dense population there was a deliberate effort made to ensure that

throughout the city there were open areas with greenery and seclusion where people could escape to. So as a result you could step off a street and feel that you had been transported out into the countryside. Hu m a n b e i n g s n e e d such an oasis of nature and solitude in order to remain both physically and mentally healthy and far too few people seem to be recognizing that, particularly our decision makers. Certainly, efforts have been made in the past to preserve open land and there are many good examples here in East York that I have written about previously. However, there is no apparent guarantee that what was saved in the past will be protected in the future. n Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. Mayor scores with Colle on committee

T

here have been a lot of dumb moves by the Mayor Rob Ford administration over the past year. But last Friday, the right-wing mayor and his so-very conservative team made a very smart move, as they invited EglintonLawrence Councillor Josh Colle to sit on their executive committee. Colle is a first-term councillor, and one of the more prominent voices — some would call him the de facto leader — of council’s socalled “mushy middle.” Now, that is a deceptively unkind term, to describe a group of councillors who essentially bring the kind of pragmatism that one would hope comes to nuts-andbolts municipal government, keeping their place on the political spectrum generally to themselves. More than the hated left, this group has been the real bane of Mayor Ford’s existence on the floor of council. They have proven themselves anything but mushy, as they rejected the mayor’s budget, derailed his plans to build a subway

THE CITY

david nickle

instead of light rail lines, replaced his TTC board of directors and approved a plastic bag ban. The mayor and his team have so far responded with glares and threats of electoral retribution. But as 2013 approaches, that strategy is proving hollow, particularly as the mayor’s personal troubles stack up. Bringing Colle onto the executive committee could signal a very intelligent shift. Colle has made it clear he’s going to vote independently, whether he’s sitting on the mayor’s team or not. That doesn’t seem to have dissuaded anyone in extending the invitation. And it shouldn’t. Colle has proven himself to be a leader among the middle. He’s often at or near the middle of the compro-

mises that pull that middle vote one way or another. And over the next two years, the Ford administration has to have some wins. If 2012 was a lesson in anything, it was humility: that however great a mandate Rob Ford received in 2010 when he was elected, he can’t count on that alone to bring about consensus on council. If he wants to succeed, he’ll have to follow the example of other mayors and seek consensus. Ford has begun to do this — notably, backing off his dream of selling off 700 detached homes owned by the Toronto Community Housing Corporation in favour of big renewal. With Colle onside, he will have a means to determine how to make those compromises earlier. It could mean a balanced budget that passes with the consent of council. It could mean a rebirth for the Ford mayoralty. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall columnist. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Leaside’s Bradwell seeks Grey Cup with Argonauts NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com A Leaside High School grad is one of at least nine homegrown players who will suit up in Sunday’s Grey Cup at the Rogers Centre between the hometown Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders. Mike Bradwell, 26, a wide receiver who also does time on special teams, is in his fourth year in the CFL, all with the Argos. This season he made 20 catches, averaging 9.5 yards. He didn’t score a touchdown this year after a touchdown in each of his first three years. He also recorded two special teams tackles and had two kickoff returns for three yards (1.5 avg.). Started in Grade 12 Bradwell is proof that it’s never too late to start a career. He didn’t begin playing football until his Grade 12 year at Leaside. As he told The Mirror back in his rookie year: “I had a big group of friends and we all just decided in Grade 12 that we would join the (football) team as just a fun thing to do, something that we could all play. I like football and I was always tall and fast so it kind of suited me to be a wide receiver.” He proved a quick study, earning the special teams player of the year award. But his fondest high school athletic memory didn’t even come from the football field. In the same interview, he explained: “We had a pretty good (football) team my senior year but playing hockey in Grade 12, we won a silver medal at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations

provincial championships), and being part of that team was pretty special.” Even more amazing is that he went to McMaster University, a noted football powerhouse, but didn’t even play his first year and hardly raised eyebrows in his second and third years. McMaster star In his fourth year he went from back of the pack at McMaster to leading the nation as the top university receiver in most categories including total yardage (958), total yardage per game (119.75), touchdowns (9) and the longest reception in McMaster history (108 yards). “As my fourth year came around I became a bit of the go-to guy and I had a great quarterback in Adam Archibald that could really throw the ball really well and everything sort of clicked in that year and I was able to have a pretty successful season,” he understated. Now with 946 yards from 79 receptions over four years in he CFL, he is slated to make his first Grey Cup appearance. His fellow Toronto players on the Argos (with their high school affiliations, where applicable) include: Matt Black (Northern Secondary), 27; Adriano Belli (Central Tech), 35; Jeff Johnnson (Etobicoke Collegiate), 35; Tristan Black (Central Tech), 27; and Andrew Jones (grew up in the Beach but moved to Mississauga at the start of high school), 30; And from the Stampeders, Arjei Franklin (Agincourt Collegiate), 30; J’Michaele Deane (Newtonbrook SS), 27; and Akwasi Antwi (lists himself as Toronto resident, school not listed).

GreekTown, Gerard India and Danforth BIAS honoured by TABIA Several east Toronto business improvement areas (BIA) were recognized for their contributions to the communities they serve as well as the city as a whole during the second annual TABIA Awards Event. The umbrella organization representing the city’s 28 BIAs, the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas, held its annual awards night on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the St. Lawrence Hall. “When you see how much our BIAs accomplish – and many of the BIAS have either part-time or no paid staff and simply reply rely on their own volunteer Board members – it’s really an incredible feat. We hope that the City of Toronto takes note of all that the over 30,000 small businesses contribute to their individual neighbourhoods, through their own self-imposed levies,” said John Kiru, TABIA’s executive director, in a release. Fellowship award Locally, the GreekTown on the Danforth BIA was recognized with a fellowship award. On Oct. 11, the BIA, in partnership with the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, welcomed the Marathon Flame to Alexander the Great Parkette at Danforth and Logan avenues. Over the next year, the plan is

to install a permanent flame structure in the parkette so every time the torch leaves Greece, it would travel to the GreekTown on the Danforth BIA. The Gerrard India Bazaar BIA received a festival award for its successful Festival of South Asia, now considered one of Toronto’s premier street festivals. The diverse event gives attendees a window into all things South Asian. The Little India-area BIA was further commended for its commitment to producing the annual festival despite often frustrating and expensive hurdles it has faced. Thrill of the Grill The Danforth BIA was recognized with a marketing award for its media campaign in support of the Thrill of the Grill event, which welcomed thousands of foodies to The Danforth to watch a team of celebrity judges determine “Who Has the Best Rack?”. The Beach BIA also received a small budget, big impact award for the various initiatives its marketing committee came up with to not only promote the BIA, but also engage its members to have more positive and frequent interaction with the board. The BIA’s most notable initiative recognized is its tote bag

made of recyclable materials, which can be folded up small enough to fit into a pocket or a purse but has a handle long enough to fit over a shoulder. T The branded bags cost $1.25 each to produce, but sold to BIA members for $1 each. Lastly, the Riverside District BIA was honoured with an outstanding streetscape improvement (capital project small scale) award for its innovative tree pit covers, which, with the cooperation of the City of Toronto’s Urban Forestry Department, transformed several outdated and tired tree pits along Queen Street East. TABIA’s executive team selected the award winners. Business improvement areas could also nominate themselves or suggest other BIAs they felt are deserving of an award. Toronto Community News, which publishes the

Beach Mirror and East York Mirror, alongside the City of Toronto’s Economic Development and Culture and Tourism Toronto sponsored the annual event.

Riverdale Hub aiming to repaint mural JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It’s an unfortunate situation, but one that can’t easily be rectified. That’s the point of view the Riverdale Hub, the Little India-area non-profit organization behind the blocklong GerrardART Project, has decided to take in light of the

recent painting over of a portion of its public art mural. “These (kind of ) things happen in many communities,” said Nuzhath Leedham, executive director of the Riverdale Hub and its sister organization, the Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre (RIWC), this week, pointing to disagreements and/or misunderstanding between

local stakeholders. “The community is still behind this project. We have so much support.” Further, she underlined the mandate of the Riverdale Hub and the RIWC is to bring people together, not divide the community in any way. Sometime late Sunday, Oct. 28 or in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 29, a

significant portion of a largescale mural at 1330 Gerrard St. E. was painted over with white paint. This led to the Riverdale Hub postponing its Friday, Nov. 9 media event as well as the project’s unveiling celebrations, which were set to take place the weekend of Nov. 10 and 11 during the community’s Diwali Fair. “We needed the time to digest the situation and didn’t want to react right away,” Leedham said, adding their goal is to repaint the mural as soon as possible and move forward. “There is a bit of tension between the neighbours on the block. We want some resolution, for sure.” She said they’d also like to find out who is responsible for the painting over. Leedham said the various designs for the project’s murals were prominently displayed in the front windows of the Riverdale Hub since September and they weren’t aware about any major concerns with what was envi-

sioned for the mural’s eastern side at Highfield Road. “We felt blindsided by the objection to the design,” she said, referring to the reaction after the mural had been painted. The steering committee for the City of Toronto-funded project met Monday afternoon to discuss the next steps. Its first move is to request a meeting between all involved and Councillor Paula Fletcher, who has asked city staff to do a complete investigation of all parties involved and to explore what verbal or written permissions were given for the public art project. “As I understand it, there was a sign off for the mural, but I’m now waiting to have that corroborated. I’ve asked city staff to peel back the layers,” she said last week, expressing her disappointment a piece of the colourful project was painted over. “It’s quite confusing, very complicated and terribly unfortunate. I’m hoping at the end of the day cooler heads will prevail all around.”

In a recent email to The Mirror, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, president of Dinco Holdings Inc., the company that manages 1330 Gerrard St. E., indicated the plan is to “remove the mural entirely as soon as possible.” “Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Enterprise and/ or Ms. Nuzhath (Leedham, executive director of The Riverdale Hub and the Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre) has never approached us with (a) formal proposal for our approval. The owner of the building has informed the City of Toronto about his plan to restore the defaced walls,” he wrote Nov. 13. “The owner of the building has spoken with the manager of Toronto Transportation Services regarding the matter. He has elaborated the letter of permission, adding details to the idea and clarifying the meaning of the letter and its discourse. The letter of permission was intended to show general support to City of Toronto’s plans.”

City

Toronto snow crews not betting on mild winter DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Photo/JANEK LOWE

Toronto transportation services director Peter Noehammer, right, and councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong discuss the city’s winter preparedness during a media conference held Tuesday at the Eastern Avenue Toronto Works Yard.

Toronto got off easy last winter, with mild temperatures and very little snowfall. And while Toronto’s works department is hoping for more of the same this winter, they’re not betting on it. “We’re hoping for another mild winter but we’re ready if we have a heavy snowfall,” said public works and infrastructure committee chair Denzil Minnan-Wong Tuesday, Nov. 20, as the city unveiled its 2012-2013 winter snow clearing plan. The mild winter past has left the city with a $20 million surplus on top of its annual $86 million snow clearing budget — but that surplus could evaporate if the rest of November and December prove more blustery. To that end, the city has readied its fleet of 1,100 snow clearing vehicles to keep the keep the roads and sidewalks clear: 600 snow plows, 300 sidewalk plows and 200 salt trucks. They’ll be deployed to various types of roadways depending on the severity of the storm. Once snow begins, the city sends

out salt trucks to main roads and expressways. When the snow reaches 2.5 centimetres, snow clearing starts on expressways; at five centimetres, arterial roads will be cleared. When it hits eight centimetres, local roads will get ploughed. “Some people think that once a few centimetres fall on the ground you should be on my street. Well, that’s the standard,” Minnan-Wong said. He said the city is ready to deal with most snowfalls, but admitted that if the city gets hit with an unusually large snowfall — such as the one in 1999 that caused thenMayor Mel Lastman to call in the army to clear snow and make the city the butt of jokes — it would be a challenge. “We’re ready for winter,” he said. “I don’t think anyone was ready for 1999. We’ve got enough resources but in the case of a 1999 storm, if that were to happen all over again everybody would be challenged to deal with it.” As always, the city is asking residents in downtown neighbourhoods to clear the snow on sidewalks in front of their houses, but elsewhere the city will endeavour to clear sidewalk snow itself.
