Masked man ON THE RUN sought in armed robbery at Chester subway station
wagjag.com
Staff Insp. Mike Earl of the holdup squad said a masked man approached the collector booth, “pointed a gun through the hole where the money is passed through” and demanded cash around 10:25 p.m. The suspect got away with an undisclosed amount of money. Earl said the holdup lasted “a matter of seconds.” Police believe the same man is responsible for two similar gunpoint robberies: one at Christie station on the night of Aug. 26 and the other at Chester station on the night of Aug. 6. “This is brazen, bold and almost a slap in the face to the TTC and the police,” Earl told reporters Monday, noting the robbery on Sunday took place “at the same establishment that >>>SUSPECT, page 7

He’s quick, masked and armed. That’s how police describe the man who held up three TTC fare collectors at subway stations on the Bloor-Danforth line. Last week, and again on Monday, police released security camera images in the hopes of preventing him from striking again. The latest robbery happened Sunday night at Chester station. City staff are recommending the original section of Leaside’s oldest home be designated as a heritage property. “The Thomas G. Elgie House (circa 1898) is valued as a rare surviving farmhouse and the oldest residential building in Leaside where in its original location it yields information about the development and evolution of the community to which it remains historically and visually linked,” a report from Heritage Preservation Services said. While the house at 262 Bessborough Dr. is already listed on the city’s inventory of heritage property, staff recommend the original part of the home be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. That would give the prominent red-brick farmhouse more protection because city council would be able to “manage alterations to the site, enforce heritage property standards and maintenance, and refuse demolition,” the report said. Designating the house under provincial legislation “would enable staff to work with the owners to preserve the site’s >>>ELGIE, page 8

Annual Riverdale Share concert set for Danforth Music Hall Riverdale Share, the annual holiday fundraising concert, will enjoy its second year back at the Danforth Music Hall on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. Tickets will go on sale beginning Sunday, Nov. 2, at three Danforth locations: n The Big Carrot, 348 Danforth Ave. n Treasure Island Toys, 581 Danforth Ave.
n It’s My Party, 423 Danforth Ave (at Chester Subway).
The purpose of the long running popular concert, as explained on its website, is to bring “together residents, businesses, students, volunteers, community leaders, and performers to celebrate the spirit of community and to raise money for families in crisis.” A number of key neigh-
bourhood service organizations were helped by last year’s concert including: Blake Boultbee Youth Outreach Service; Kaleidoscope Kids; Ralph Thornton Community Centre (in particular its Youth Mentor and After School programs); the Riverdale Food Working Group; Sol Express L’Arche Toronto; and South Riverdale Child Parent Centre. More information can be
found on these community groups at the Riverdale Share website. As always, corporate and individual support through financial sponsorships as well as volunteer and inkind donations are always appreciated. The concert wouldn’t be possible without the considerable volunteer support of local musicians who support the charity concert year after
year: last year, Steven Page and Suzie Vinnick led the cast of volunteer performers. This year’s lineup is in the process of being finalized. The concert returned to the Danforth Music Hall last year for its 20th anniversary show, after the previous two shows had to be moved out of the venerable and roomy music hall because of a change of management one year and for a long-running
musical the previous year. Thankfully, a local Danforth Avenue church, St. Barnabas Church, quickly stepped in to fill the void. Over the past two decades, the concert has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and truckloads of food for families in crisis in the Riverdale community.

Building stronger neighbourhoods
Write us
T
he next chapter of Toronto’s Strong Neighbourhood Strategy is about to be written and the city needs your input. The project saw the creation of 13 priority neighbourhoods – “hot spots of high need and low infrastructure” – and over eight years worked with the province and the United Way to try to improve the lives of residents through targeted investment. The program is now being re-evaluated and new Neighbourhood Improvement Area (NIA) designations may be in the works. A host of public meetings are being held across the city this month to help shape the program’s future. In particular, city staff wants your ideas on criteria used to select NIAs, what goals should be established, and how the city should track its success. We’ve always touted the imporour view tance of local engagement and this instance is no exception. If you live in one of the currently Residents’ designated areas or live in an area input needed you believe needs concentrated investment, your input will be the for strategy most valuable. It’s your experience that will help answer some of the most critical questions. For instance, are the previously designated priority neighbourhoods ready to stand on their own? It’s not clear yet whether any of these areas will remain on the NIA list. Community hubs, drop-in centres, youth programming and partnerships have been established, but is that enough to ensure self-sustainability? Residents need to speak up about the results they’ve seen – or not seen – at the grassroots level. As well, the groups that have been involved in transforming these neighbourhoods need to declare whether they feel they can continue their work on their own. If it happens that these neighbourhoods do remain on the list, it’ll beg the question as to why. The city should be transparent in explaining why certain communities may still need focused help, even after eight years of investment. Would that be evidence of a failure? A need to modify expectations? Redistribute funding? Besides garnering opinion and experiential data from the people the program is meant to help, the city also needs to learn from lessons of the past. Without a critical self-evaluation of the project’s previous eight years, the story of Toronto’s Strong Neighbourhoods will be a short one with an ending that disappoints. Have your say. Visit www.toronto.ca/neighbourhoods to learn how.

Todmorden celebrates heritage, arts
W
hile the weather is still warm, you can tell by little signs of change that fall is coming. The days are beginning to get shorter, and it is certainly cooler in the evenings and in the morning. Soon it will be time to think about new schedules and projects. One of the main characteristics of the East York and Leaside community has been the way in which people get involved in volunteer actives, or become a member of a hobby or sports group. This year if you are looking for something different to do, why not consider belonging to one of our groups who specializes in local history and heritage. There is no better way to develop a real sense of roots in one’s community than through developing a good knowledge of it’s past. East York has a history dating back into the 1700s
joe cooper watchdog for European settlement and the area around Toronto has been the home of many First Nations people for thousands of years. Leaside, while relatively new, has had an extremely important history based on industry, aviation (it had an airport at one time), and automobile manufacturing. One good starting point in becoming involved in promoting local history and heritage would be Todmorden Mills. Located on Pottery Road in the Don Valley, the site dates back to 1796. At that time, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada John Graves Simcoe gave one pair of mill stones to Isaiah and Aaron Skinner so they could construct the first grist mill on the Don River. The area quickly devel-
oped into a major industrial complex. In 1821 the first brewery in the watershed was built. Later, in 1827, a paper mill was built on the site out of the old mill building. The site today has many buildings that are used to document and interpret the industrial history of the Don Valley.
“
One of the main characteristics of the East York and Leaside community has been the way in which people get involved in volunteer activities, or become a member of a hobby or sports group.
PLAN A visiT A number of groups also share the site, such as the East Side Players Theatre. If you have not had an opportunity to visit the Todmorden Mills site, and you want to have a special day to do it on. There are art shows on at the Papermill Gallery until Nov. 3 and there will be Halloween-themed family events happening soon. There are guided walks and the Toronto field naturalists will be celebrating their 90th anniversary celebration at
the site. Other events are also promised this fall. This is just the beginning as many winter events are also planned as well. If you would like more information on becoming involved in the Todmorden Mills site, or being a member, call them at 416-396-2819. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. Suspect wanted in armed robberies >>>from page 1 we did a press conference on this less than a week ago.” Metropasses were also taken during the August robberies. “His mannerisms, his words and the description is very similar in all three robberies,” Earl said. “This individual has gone to these collector booths in prepara-
tion with his disguise, with his firearm, selected a time and has planned this out very carefully. There are very few witnesses in the area.” The suspect is white, 25 to 30 years old and 5’10” to six-feet tall. He wears a black toque, a paisley bandana and a white glove with a grey palm on his left hand.
“I’m concerned that the violence could escalate,” Earl said. “We want to apprehend him as quickly as possible.” The suspect doesn’t fit the description of the person who shot a fare collector during an attempted robbery at the Dupont subway station on Feb. 26, 2012. The TTC employee suffered serious
injuries. The shooter, unknown if male or female, was described as white, 35 to 50 years old with a heavy build. Previous robberies
Despite these cases, holdups at TTC collector booths are rare. There have been only six collector booth robberies in the city’s subway system so far this year.
Police believe the same suspect was responsible for two previous armed holdups at the same collector booth.

Anyone with information is asked to call the holdup squad at 416-808-7350 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.

Elgie house designation to be considered by community council >>>from page 1 heritage values and attributes,” it said. The two-and-a-half storey farmhouse once belonged to Thomas G. Development application The property, southeast of Eglinton and Bayview avenues, is subject to a development application that would see the lot subdivided into three sections. The original part of the home would be saved on the middle lot and relocated near the front of the property, according to information

Toronto tops Austin for weird
O
ne thing that Mayor Rob Ford’s trip to Austin should have confirmed to our Lone Star cousins last week: when it comes to keeping a town weird, the musicallyinclined Texans are a few steps behind Toronto. No doubt, as the mayor left the city limits with his entourage of music-industry leaders and councillors, Austin breathed a sigh of relief. Because when they say “Keep Austin Weird,” they mean a nice kind of weird. Toronto and the saga of Mayor Rob Ford has reached a level of weird that is rather more terrifying. News broke just before he left town for Austin that a close friend of Mayor Ford, Sandro Lisi, was arrested and charged with possession and trafficking of marijuana. The mayor addressed the matter at a news conference at a filling station near his home, in which he described Lisi as “a good guy” and a friend, before heading off to the
david nickle the city airport. While the mayor was gone, a story came out suggesting Toronto police have been following Mayor Ford and his associates using a leased Cessna. His brother, Doug Ford, told a Toronto Sun columnist that he had spoken to two Toronto police superintendents, who’d confirmed that there was aerial surveillance going on. Doug Ford then recanted the next day and suspected that the mayor’s enemies were behind it all. I worry about commenting on all this in a column filed early, for fear that something even weirder turns up in the interim. Because that’s how things have been going for the Ford brothers. This time last year, the mayor’s biggest problems were football, looming conflict of interest charges, and issues of reading while
driving, and all that seemed weird enough. Now, it’s substance abuse allegations, alleged family connections to the westend drug trade, and that alleged video where the mayor was seen appearing to smoke crack cocaine. Men photographed with the mayor have been stabbed and murdered. Weirder still are the many among us who believe that all of this is simply a conspiracy of downtown elite, police and big media, to bring down a Conservative, millionaire mayor who is at the core, just an average guy. It’s hard to imagine a trade mission from the delusional Wonderland that Toronto has become, exciting anything in its hosts beyond a desire to back away slowly without making any sudden movements. With weirdos like us, you can’t be too careful.

Bowmore students take part in walk-to-school event REBECCA FIELD eym@insidetoronto.com Students at Bowmore Road Public School put on their walking shoes yesterday as part of International Walk to School Month. The school held the event in collaboration with TD Friends of the Environment and ParticipACTION to promote healthy, environ-
mentally friendly living to school-aged children. “We’re seeing more and more kids and schools embracing walk to school,” said Christa Costas, relationship manager at ParticipACTION. “The challenge is going to be whether we can keep kids walking after today.” Costas said only five per cent of Canadian children
currently meet Canadian physical activity guidelines of 60 minutes of exercise a day. If students who live within one kilometre from school walked to and from school each day, they would be getting an extra 15 minutes of exercise each way. “Any trip, whether it’s to school, the grocery store, wherever it is, we’re encourag-
ing people to walk it, wheel it, skateboard, whatever,” Costas said. Students at yesterday’s event mapped their routes to school, and received pedometers so they could start tracking their steps. Along with healthy living, Bowmore Road promoted a more environmental message with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to honour five trees planted in boxes in the
schoolyard. “We’ve planted five different species so students will learn how to care for those trees and learn about their species,” said vice-principal Peppi Minos. “They’re (students) going to become stewards of the environment.” Bowmore has been named a Platinum Eco School, and is the first school in the Toronto
District School Board’s Ward 16 to get the trees as a part of an arboretum project. The trees were paid for with a $5,000 grant from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation that funds grassroots projects in communities across Canada.

wins transit awards wGO
rahul gupta
GO Transit was a big winner at the 2013 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Awards. The regional transit provider took home top prize for having the best service among North American large transit agencies which provide 20 million-plus rides annually. Transit providers that qualify include New York City’s Metropolitan Transport Authority as well as the Toronto Transit Commission. GO now joins York Region Transit (YRT), Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and the TTC among past Canadian winners since the APTA Awards were inaugurated in 1983. Closure over Thanksgiving wPartial
The TTC is closing the “U” portion of the YongeUniversity-Spadina subway line on Thanksgiving weekend. Downtown train service between Bloor and St. George stations is out of commission
TO in TRANSIT from Oct. 12-14 due to ongoing signal upgrades. It’s the only closure this month following the scrapping of two additional planned subway shutdowns. TTC CEO Andy Byford also confirmed last week a six-week closure between Eglinton and St. Clair stations on the Yonge line is under consideration in 2014 for track replacement. track work delayed wstreetcar
It will now take until next summer to complete extensive TTC streetcar track work along Queen’s Quay. Waterfront Toronto is co-ordinating a $100 million renovation of Queen’s Quay, which includes the complete rebuild of the rail corridor between Lower Spadina Avenue to Bay Street and reconstruction of the Spadina streetcar loop used for re-routing 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina service. The work was expected
to be done by March 2014. However, a delay in hydro infrastructure upgrading has pushed back the completion date to next July. bike to Layton to stay put wMemorial
A memorial bicycle installed in Riverside in honour of Jack Layton won’t be removed any time soon. A online petition circulated after a city notice of removal was spotted on the white painted bicycle in front of the NDP’s leader’s former Broadview Avenue constituency office towards the end of September. But after consulting with city staff, local councillor Paula Fletcher announced the bike will remain at the site until plans for a permanent memorial are finalized. The bicycle, inscribed with messages from the community, was installed following Layton’s death from cancer in 2011. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday.
