Toronto’s Greek community is holding its annual OXI Day parade along Danforth Avenue this Sunday at 1 p.m.

The event takes place along Danforth Avenue, and honours Greek veterans who refused Italian occupation and entered the Second World War in 1940.

Participants wearing Greek clothing and carrying Greek and Canadian flags will meet at Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute, 16 Phin Ave., near Donlands and Danforth avenues.

The parade will move west along Danforth to Logan Avenue, finishing with a wreathlaying ceremony at Alexander the Great parkette.

Conservative incumbent John Carmichael was defeated

by Liberal rival - and former Don Valley West MP - Rob Oliphant when the votes were tallied from the Monday, Oct. 19 federal election.

Oliphant took in 27,410 votes,

or 53.6 per cent, compared to Carmichael’s 19,206 tally, which worked out to 37.6 per cent.

The win was part of the Liberal tide that saw Stephen Harper ousted as prime minister and Justin Trudeau voted in with a majority government of 184 seats, with all Toronto ridings now red.

A handful of nervous Carmichael supporters gathered at Amsterdam Brewery,

including his mother and sister, were anxiously keeping an eye on televised election results.

When Oliphant was declared victorious just after 10:30 p.m., the disappointment on their faces was hard to miss.

“Canadians are itching for a change, but I don’t think they have a clue what they’re getting into across Canada,” Carmichael’s sister, Julie Carmichael Norton, said when a

Liberal majority was declared. “I understand a little bit of change is good. But I feel like someone like my brother is a victim of a sweep. This was about Harper/ Trudeau, not Carmichael/ Oliphant.”

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Voters in Beaches-East York elected Liberal Nathaniel Erskine-Smith as their new MP in the 2015 federal election.

The first-time candidate handily unseated NDP incumbent Matthew Kellway, who finished with 17,137 (30.8 per cent) votes to Erskine-Smith’s 27,441 (49.4 per cent).

“I always thought politics was something I’d be doing down the road,” ErskineSmith said as he thanked supporters attending his victory party in the upstairs meeting room at the Ted Reeve Community Arena.

“So many of you were here from the very beginning,” he said to his crowd of his supporters, asking them to continue their involvement in politics. “Let’s over the next four years continue to make our voices heard.”

Erskine-Smith, an advocate and a commercial litigation lawyer who grew up in and currently lives in the riding with his wife, Amy, vowed he’d work hard for smart, fair and honest government over the next four years.

He s a i d h e g o t i n t o politics for two reasons: to change the Stephen Harper Conservative government and because of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.

Kellway, a father of three who has lived in the riding with his wife Donna for nearly 20 years, was gracious in defeat.

“I think we ran a great campaign and I did my best as an MP,” he said in an interview from his election night party at Time Capsule Café

on Danforth Avenue, just east of Woodbine Avenue.

He said he devoted as much time and energy to his role as he could and has no regrets.

“There is a silver lining to all of this. It’s an opportunity to call home, home again,” Kellway said.

In the end, he said voters saw the appeal of the Trudeau Liberals and voted accordingly.

“It was beyond us locally,” Kellway said, adding “fear of the Conservatives” also likely played a role in the way people voted. “(Beaches-East York) went back to the Liberals for the same reason they held (the riding) for 18 years.”

Conservative Bill Burrows finished third with 9,141 votes (16.5 per cent), while Green Party candidate Randall Sach came in fourth with 1,431 votes (2.6 per cent).

Kellway was first elected MP for Beaches-East York in the 2011 federal election. He took the riding by 5,000 votes from Liberal Maria Minna who had held the riding for the previous 18 years.

“I was actually prepared for it,” Scott said on election night from his party at the Fox and Fiddle pub at Danforth and Pape avenues.

“Earlier in the day I had a premonition.”

Regardless, Scott said his second-place finish is a respectable one.

“It was a very close loss compared to other areas of the city,” he said, adding he’s proud to have represented a riding that is “deeply embedded in the spirit of solidarity and of taking care of others” in Ottawa. “(Toronto-Danforth) is a great place to live and a great riding,” Scott said, attributing strategic voting as one of the main reasons for his loss.

The Conservative Party’s Benjamin Dichter finished third with 5,265 votes or 9.9 per cent of the vote, while Chris Tolley of the Green Party earned 2,538 votes (4.9 per cent).

Toronto-Danforth’s 11-year tenure of being an orange riding came to an end Monday night with the election of Liberal Julie Dabrusin.

“What an amazing journey this has been,” Dabrusin said on election night, celebrating her win at Il Fornello restaurant at Danforth and Pape avenues.

“We talked about hope and hard work and we had that here in Toronto-Danforth.”

A bilingual litigation lawyer who is taking a break from her career to raise her family in the riding, Dabrusin said she and her campaign team knocked on more than 30,000 doors in the riding over the course of the 78-day election campaign.

“It was a great experience and a great chance to get the message out about making the country better,” she said early Tuesday morning.

“Now t h e h a rd w o rk begins. We’ve had a long decade and there’s a lot of hard work ahead of us and that’s what (the Liberal Party) is committed to doing.”

Dabrusin took the riding from incumbent NDP Craig Scott, who has represented the riding in Ottawa since a March 2012 byelection.

She won with 23.531 votes (42.3 per cent) to Scott’s 22.261 votes (40.0 per cent) “I’m humbled by the fact I’m being given this opportunity by all of you,” Dabrusin said.

“I promise I will work hard for all of you.”

Scott, a human rights lawyer and Osgoode Law School professor who lives in East York with his partner Aeh, said no one expected the NDP would lose in Toronto-

On March 19, 2012, firsttime NDP candidate Scott won a byelection race in Toronto-Danforth. The downtown east riding was previously held for just over three terms from 2004 to 2011 by former NDP leader Jack Layton, who died of cancer in August 2011.

Toronto-Danforth (formerly BroadviewGreenwood), which has been represented in the House of Commons since 1979, is bounded by Lake Ontario to the south, Taylor Creek and the Don River East Branch to the north, Coxwell Avenue/ Coxwell Boulevard to the east, and the Don River to the west.

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night.

With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign.

It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time poliour view ticians. As it is a majority government, they will be your voice in for the next four years.

City’s priority Ottawa And while majority governissues must ments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power.

The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs.

These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government.

In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province.

Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding.

Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign.

Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Hoping Trudeau can deliver on his promises Well it’s over, the votes are in and Canada has changed in significant and subtle ways.

We now have a new leader waiting to be sworn in, Justin Trudeau, and a new majority party, the Liberals.

The question now is a simple one: What’s next?

There is certainly a lot of potential for change with the election of a party with significant numbers behind it.

There is certainly a need for change after nearly a decade of Conservative rule and policy with the Stephen Harper government.

The question is, how much can actually be done, given the amount of change that has taken place?

When Harper came into power he did so with an ideological backing that was more based on American ideals than Canadian.

One of the realities of

joe cooper watchdog the Harper years was that he and his supporters came from radical rightwing roots.

One of the biggest deceptions of all times was the notion that the Reform/Alliance party merged with the federal Progressive Conservative party.

Frankly, it was not a merger but a take-over and with it came a complete change of purpose and character.

A cover story was created stating that the new party was just a continuation of the old Progressive Conservative party.

The reality was the new party quickly shed its progressive elements and incorporated Americaninspired neo-conservative ideology.

As a result, the new party began to sound and

act more like its American counterpart – the Republican Party – than the original Progressive Conservatives.

Since that point in time Harper has acted more like a president than a prime minister and consolidated power in his office.

At the same time his own party’s Members of Parliament lost their independent voices and began to parrot the party line.

Needless to say, Harper’s ideological agenda began to be seen in the transformation of many of Canada’s institutions.

The country went from being a nation that prided itself in its peacekeeping roles and as a facilitator of change to a dull carboncopy of American policy.

The challenge that is now in place for Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party is to find out how much of that change can be unravelled.

There is no magic wand that can be waved that will bring Canada back to the state it was before Harper took power.

Harper brought the country into a number of agreements and policy changes, particularly in the area of free trade, that will be difficult to undo.

Likewise, there are a number of laws and policies that have been implemented that will be difficult to unravel overnight – if at all.

At this time the best that we can hope for is at least a change in the tone and general direction of the country away from the negative one in which it has been mired.

Hopefully, Trudeau can deliver on his promise of a more unified country with a more positive outlook.

Let’s hope he can do it.

Rounding out riding results were Syeda Riaz of the NDP with 3,076 votes, Natalie Hunt of the Green Party with 848 votes, John Kittredge of the Libertarian Party with 388 votes and Independent Sharon Cromwell and Elizabeth Hill of the Communist Party, each with 84 votes.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer found in Canadian women, and understanding your personal risk factors can help to avoid becoming a part of this demographic. Getting screened for abnormalities is an easy first preventative step you can take. Here is a quick-guide to breast health: • Understand your personal risk: Risk factors of breast cancer can include your gender, age, breast density and genetics. Women have a higher chance of getting breast cancer than men, as do women over the age of 60. Family history that includes ovarian and breast cancer in female relatives can also raise the risk, along with having a particular genetic disposition. Women with dense breasts have also been shown to have an increased risk.

Understanding your personal risks and how your lifestyle impacts these risks can help you in the long run.

• Get screened: A mammogram x-ray is an effective form of detecting early signs of breast cancer. The procedure generally takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and is relatively painless. During your first screening appointment, you will undergo a mammogram procedure where the breast is compressed under two plates in order to create a clear image of breast tissue. It is recommended to get a mammogram every one to two years starting at age 40.

• Preventative measures: Practicing self-screening can also help with early diagnosis. It is recommended that women take a moment each month to self-screen.

Women should begin this exam in their early twenties and look for abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, redness, changes in nipple size and abnormal excretions. If anything abnormal is detected during the self exam, an appointment should be made with a doctor.

As the group notes, along with being extremely dangerous, it will now cost cyclists $110 in fines for not having proper lighting.

Cycle Toronto is also organizing a fundraising bike ride this weekend in and around the Annex.

The group is looking to raise $50,000 in donations and is asking participants to either fundraise or pay $75 for one of 200 slots for the 20-kilometre ride Saturday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m., starting at the Centre for Social Innovation, 720 Bathurst St. The registration fee covers entry into the ride’s after party as well as “swag” for riders.

McNicoll Bus Garage plans rolling along Celebrate The annual fall Beach Studio Tours take place October 23 to 25 The McNicoll Bus Garage took another small step to becoming reality as TTC officials were expected to present preliminary design concepts for the project at a public meeting in Scarborough this week.

The $181-million project received a major boost over the summer when the Ontario Ministry of the Environment signed off on the last major legislative hurdle for the project. In doing so, it dismissed the concerns of a vocal group of north Scarborough residents who oppose the garage primarily on health grounds.

Their concerns were deemed baseless by the TTC, as well as the Toronto Board of Health.

With funding secured and design underway, the garage will likely open by 2019.

Boy, 17, recovering after stabbing near Danforth and Greenwood A 17-year-old boy is recovering after being stabbed in the abdomen on the Danforth early Sunday.

Police said a fight involving four people began at a bar on Danforth Avenue near Greenwood Avenue around 12:45 a.m.

“Multiple individuals assaulted the victim,” Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said. “A 17-year-old boy received stab wounds and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

The victim also received head injuries.

The Leaside Wildcats junior hockey team, in their fourth year, are enjoying their best ever start to a season, one of only two undefeated teams in the 20-team Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

With four wins and a tie, Leaside will take their undefeated record into their next home game on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 8:55 p.m. at Leaside Arena against the Aurora Panthers who were were winless in their first six games (five losses and one tie).

Leaside did play the league’s other undefeated team on the weekend but resolved nothing, fighting to an overtime 3-3 tie with the hometown Nepean Wildcats (who are now six wins and two ties) on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Leaside were actually cruising to a 3-0 lead only to have Nepean stave off their first defeat of the year with three goals with less than three and a half minutes remaining, including the tying goal with two seconds remaining.

The next day, on Sunday, Oct. 18, however, it was Leaside that pulled off the comeback in a 3-2 win over Ottawa Lady Sens (1-4-1) to complete a successfull weekend in the Nation’s Capital, fighting back from an early 2-0 first-period deficit.
