Toronto Police and the fire marshal’s office are investigating after six fires were set within a 40-minute span near Coxwell and Danforth avenues early yesterday. “(Investigators) would like anyone who might have been driving in the area (between) 2:45 and 4 in the morning who might either have seen anything or who had a dash cam rolling to contact them,” Const. Victor Kwong said. Police are also asking anyone with a home security camera that may have captured the arsonist or arsonists to come forward. Fire crews were called to 6 Oakdene Cr. at 3:10 a.m. for a porch fire. Another porch fire >>>fires, page 9

Artist’s sculpture depicts Greek economic struggles TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com

past strength. Where the top body’s head would be hangs a plumb bob, an ancient device used as a level, that when hung always points to the centre of the Earth. Plumb bobs, for Wirun, represent a search for truth and have appeared before in his works. A painter as well, his art has been shown at the John B. Aird Gallery several times before. He is currently working on a piece titled Confluences that uses video to explore the connections between the right and left sides of the mind. Constantly inspired by new experiences and materials, he can also be found drawing, carving, firing clay and writing poetry, or playing with sounds and graphics on his computer, when he’s not scouring antique shops for pieces to incorporate in his works.

The current financial struggles in Greece are on display downtown Toronto, through a sculpture created by an East York artist. Gordian Knot 2015 - The Greek Dilemma by Peter Wirun is part of a Sculptors Society of Canada exhibit showing until Friday, Sept. 25 at the John B. Aird Gallery, 900 Bay St. An East York resident for the past 40 years in the Playter Boulevard area, Wirun was moved to create his latest piece by what he saw as the seemingly impossible position in which Greece now finds itself. “The more I read, the more confused I became, coming away with the thought that the only way out of the dilemma would come with the appearance of a modern day Alexander the Great,” Wirun explained, referencing the legend of the problematic Gordian knot disentangled by the ancient ruler. The mixed-media sculpture, standing 5’5” high, uses a symbolic Gordian knot to represent the problems now crippling Greece’s economy. The knot of ropes and snakes that binds the feet of a half-torso representing Greece, holds a sword waiting for a hero to cut the country free. Greece, depicted as half a body to portray it as half-whole, is bound to crutches, illustrating the financial support holding the country together. The sculpture’s rusted exterior conveys a message as well. “There is a reason for presenting the sculpture as a rusting metal object,” Wirun said. “Rust is a commonly used metaphor for slow decay due to neglect, since it gradually converts robust iron and steel metal into a soft, crumbling powder.” Atop the half-torso representing Greece’s current state stands a smaller one, wearing armour-like clothing, that embodies the country’s

T
oronto marks an important milestone Sunday with celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Toronto City Hall. The two half-circle towers, with the council chamber pod in the middle, that dominates Nathan Phillips Square is an iconic symbol of the city not just for residents but for people around the world. It’s one of the great things about Toronto that should make us proud. To celebrate this Sunday, there will be a free event from noon to 5 p.m. featuring entertainment by the Jordan John Band and a performance by STOMP dance competition finalists. Also taking the stage will be a group called the Clamshell Quintet, which is made up of four city councillors and a deputy city manager. Master builders from LEGO will be on hand to help residents build a replica of our view City Hall and the surrounding area. Inside, there will be photoIt’s one of the graphs, architectural models and of the original furnishings great things some specifically designed for the buildabout Toronto ing. As was shown during this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the building and Nathan Phillips Square are an important gathering place for all residents. Whether it’s hosting special celebrations, New Year’s Eve parties, or serving as a nice place to sit and have lunch in the summer or go for a skate in the winter, the area is always busy and reflective of life in the city. It also serves as an historical reminder of pre-amalgamation Toronto as its formation coincided in many ways with the creation of Metropolitan Toronto in the late 1950s. An open competition was started in 1957 to design the new city hall, and the eventual winner was Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Ground was broken in 1961 by then City of Toronto mayor Nathan Phillips. It officially opened on Sept. 13, 1965. Along with celebrating a community gathering spot and a uniquely designed building, residents can also use this month to find out more about how Toronto City Hall came to be and how the city has developed over the past 50 years. Free lectures on that very subject are set for today and Sept. 24 in the council chambers starting at 7 p.m. For more on the celebrations, go to www.toronto. ca/cityhall50th

Ward boundary changes could destroy East York
I
n 1812, the governor of the state of Massachusetts had a bill passed under his direction that re-drew the state senate districts. The results, it was noted, were a bit unusual in both their shape and the effect it would have on the political landscape. One of the newspapers of the time noted that when printed out it looked something like a salamander. The governor of the time was Elbridge Gerry, and the new animal shape was called a “Gerrymander.” It was obvious the new electoral boundaries would give the governor’s party an edge in the next election. Along with that, the term “Gerrymandering” became part of the political language of the United States. The term is not as well known in Canada, though the practice of drawing political boundary lines to favour political parties is
joe cooper watchdog not unknown. However, through political reforms in 1985, this country has developed a system based upon representation by population. This leads us to what is currently happening in Toronto where a very significant ward boundary review is being undertaken. In 2014, a decision was made by the City of Toronto to undertake this review and create an independent body to do this. The reason given for the review was the fact that some wards in Toronto had up to 45 percent higher populations than average. As a result, this review, called Draw the Lines, is attempting to rebalance the population distribution. The reason why it is
important for people in East York to be aware of this is that our wards may have the most change. As has been pointed out, Ward 29, TorontoDanforth, which represents the west side of East York, has the lowest population density in the city. In the most recent report made by the Draw the Lines committee, the size and shape of that ward, and possibly Ward 31, Beaches-East York as well, have been changed. One possibility is that Ward 29 would be extended to include Leaside and Thorncliff Park. The other possibility is that Ward 29 would be extended east to Woodbine Avenue and Ward 31 would be extended north to Lawrence Avenue and south to Kingston Road. A third proposal is that most of the boundaries for both wards stay the same, but the southern boundary for each would
be extended south to Kingston Road. The bottom line is that the changes to the ward boundaries will no longer follow the old boundaries of East York. Despite claims of the changes being politically neutral it would alter the voting patterns of those wards and impact how our community would be represented. Starting on Sept. 16 the second round of public consultations on the ward boundaries begins. During the first round, participation by people in East York was poor, with roughly 30 people showing up. Unless a stronger showing of people is made during the next round, East York, as a distinct community, could disappear forever. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. Council set for a busy few months It has been a quiet summer at Toronto City Hall – the kind of quiet summers we’re going to have to get used to in the years after Rob Ford’s pyrotechnic mayoralty. If it weren’t for the pyrotechnics of the federal election, indeed, we might as well all have run off to cottages and patios for August and tried to get our heads around city government again. Lucky for us there’s every indication this fall legislative session will be much like the old session. Council will be fine-tuning, reviewing and in some cases re-debating issues that have already had their day in the sun in this latest term. There will be a refined design to the Gardiner “hybrid” reconstruction that council narrowly approved in concept earlier this year. In case anyone had wearied of Councillor Jim Karygiannis’ bloviations on the Uber ride sharing on tap for TTC service wimprovements
david nickle the city service during the Pan Am Games, take heart: council will be looking at a regulatory regime that will bring the popular service under something resembling control. There will be a Scarborough subway debate, perhaps, along with a serious talk about Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack proposal that will for a span align almost directly with the new Scarborough subway. If I were to place odds, I would say it’s unlikely council will move off course on either plan. But if you were done feeling unsteady about spending all that money on such a small piece of transit, you might want to break out the smelling salts this fall. There will be smaller fights, too. While not much is known about the agreement, Intact Financial Corp will soon offer policies for Uber drivers under its belairdirect brand. The agreement also comes in advance of anticipated stricter regulations for rideshares which will likely come up for debate in city council. Uber does cover passengers and drivers in certain situations for up to $5 million, but according to media reports, at least one former driver was planning to sue the company after his insurance claim was rejected following a major collision.

With September in full swing, the TTC has finally unveiled the first round of $95 million in service improvements. Thirty-seven bus routes, many of them in suburban areas, will see an overall uptick in all-day service, restoring levels to what they were before sweeping budget cuts dating back to 2012. Thirty-nine bus and streetcar routes as well as subway service will now provide all-day, frequent service. The Blue Night network that operates once the subway closes at 2 a.m. also has expanded service. The improvements could come at a cost to riders. It’s practically assured the TTC will hike transit fares for 2016 partially to off-set the added expense of running the new service.
Place will be squaring off to deal with the Toronto and East York Community Council’s move this week to have city staff try and get the liquor license removed from the nightclub, in the wake of the deadly shootings there this summer. Add to that labour negotiations with the city’s unionized workers and a budget debate that will once again have to accommodate both Tory’s costly service improvement agendas and his imperative to keep tax increases at or below the rate of inflation – and it’s going to be a full agenda for the next few months. It is worth noting what a recursive cycle we find ourselves living. It might not be a bad thing: government is a long game, and under a serious-minded regime it can become a trifle grinding. But grinding away often creates good, smooth things. Here’s hoping it’s so.

Local doctor cleared on charges of sexual assault and harassment A doctor working in the Beach and East York area has been cleared on charges of sexual assault and criminal harassment. The Crown withdrew the charges against Dr. Oluleke Badmos in court in July, following an investigation into the allegations. The obstetrician gynecologist has a practice in the Upper Beach area,
and also works at Toronto East General Hospital. “This has been a very difficult time for my patients, the Toronto East General Hospital, my colleagues, staff and family,” said Badmos in a publicly released statement. “I am very pleased that the charges have been completely withdrawn, and I can fully
resume my practice and my role at Toronto East General Hospital.” In October 2014, Badmos was arrested after a patient said she was touched inappropriately during an exam in spring 2013. The patient also alleged the doctor began contacting her in an unprofessional manner in August 2014.
After-school program returns to community A new partnership between The Ralph Thornton Centre and the Eastview Toronto Boys and Girls Club has resulted in the re-establishment of an after-school program in Riverside. Starting today, The Ralph Thornton Centre, at 765 Queen St. E., just east of Broadview Avenue, will be providing a safe place for 24 children aged six to 12 to receive after-school care from 3 to 6 p.m.
“There are learning and leadership components as well as homework help, physical education and healthy snacks,” said Laurette JackOgbonna, the children’s program co-ordinator for Eastview Boys and Girls Club/ Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre. Maria Moutsatsos, RTC’s director of programs, called the partnership with Eastview “a natural connection” and said the return of after-school
programming in Riverside meets a consistent need for it in the community. The after-school program at The Ralph Thornton Centre costs $200 per month with an optional “safe walk” from Morse Street School, at Queen and Carlaw Avenue, for an additional $50 per month.

doesn’t get up on time, it could end in tragedy.” Strapko said residents should always keep their sheds and vehicles locked up and shouldn’t store combustibles next to a vehicle or a building. “I know it’s difficult with yard waste and garbage bins, but people can try to keep them in a garage or a shed.” All the fires happened within a 1.5-kilometre radius. Police don’t have a description of the suspect or suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call 54 Division at 416-808-5400 or 55 Division at 416-808-5500.

New spin on bike festival TO35Cycles is teaming with Ward 36 Cyclists and the Crossroads of the Danforth BIA to present the Toronto East Bike Festival. This event is expected to be the largest of its kind in East Toronto and will celebrate all things cycling. Visitors can look forward to a Bike Rodeo, Kids’ Bike Zone, fun demonstrations, free bike tuneups and a diverse marketplace with active lifestyle businesses and local environmental and social community groups. Organizers made sure there will be something for everyone, so everyday riders, families and beginners can all join in the fun. This festival is meant to promote the biking culture in Toronto and showcase a healthy, eco-
friendly way to commute. A grant from Game On Toronto, a city program to promote physical activity and healthy living, made the festival possible. The event was one of 16 ideas chosen out of 80. Everyone is welcome to pedal out to Warden Hilltop Community Centre at 25 Mendelssohn St. on September 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the festival, visit www.torontoeastbikefestival.ca TO35Cycles is a group of cycling enthusiasts volunteering to promote and celebrate safe cycling in the big city. Monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month and new members are always welcome to attend.

Metroland has Pulse of local shoppers Local businesses now have a powerful tool to connect them to shoppers who are planning to buy their products. On behalf of Metroland Media and your community newspaper, Pulse Research has surveyed our readers and collected in-depth information about what shoppers are planning to buy in the next 12 months. John Marling, founder of Pulse Research, described Pulse of Metroland as a prospecting tool that “gives the advertising department a direct barometer of the advertising needs of businesses. This tells you what your readers are going to buy and they’re going to be buying it locally.” The purchasing intentions of Metroland readers were collected through a Pulse survey in July and compiled in August. And while Marling noted many surveys, such as federal election polls, pull data from a sampling of between 800 and 1,600 people, more than 4,300 of
our readers completed the 40-minute online survey, providing an extremely reliable sampling. The data gleaned from 4,357 respondents applies to 516 business categories “from plumbers to financial planners,” he said. The results offer interesting details about Metroland readers: w 3.2% plan to have laser eye surgery w 5.6% say they will go to an audiology clinic w 10.5% need an electrician w 16.9% are planning to call a handyman w 42.3% say they will shop in a bookstore w 24.9% say they will start using or will change their auto insurance provider w 13.5% plan to have shoes repaired w 8.7% need a tune-up or repair for a bicycle w 4.9% are planning to buy a bed for their dog Ia n Pro u d f o o t , p u b lisher and vice-president of
Metroland Media in Toronto, York, Simcoe and Muskoka, is thrilled to support local businesses through this new corporate initiative. “This is extremely valuable information for our local business owners who rely on us to reach their customers, our readers,” Proudfoot said. “Knowing how many people in the market are ready and willing to spend money locally gives us the knowledge to guide our advertisers in the right direction. It really is a win-win situation for local businesses and local shoppers.” Pulse of Metroland offers very detailed information to businesses in each category. For example, those readers planning to shop at a furniture store in the next 12 months indicated what they were intending to buy – living room furniture, a new mattress, an area rug or other items.
