The 11th annual Pocket Street Party is set to take over Dawson Avenue this Saturday. The festivities, which will include games, displays, a fire truck, a potluck dinner, music, storytelling, a talent show and more, will take place from 2 to 11 p.m. Sponsored by The Pocket Community Association, the neighbourhood party will also feature face painting, a bicycle parade, a pet contest and a movie for the kids. Adults can enjoy high tea, a French cafe, a German beer garden and a pie contest. Volunteers are needed. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food for the food bank. Call or email David at 647280-7747 or langille@yorku.ca or Jeff at 416-986-2374 or jeffotto@sympatico.ca for more information or to help out.

A group of Withrow Park ball hockey moms are taking on the world. The Withrow Knights, as they

call themselves, are in Tampa Bay, Florida, competing in the 2014 Masters World Ball Hockey Championship. They are the lone club team in the five-team field and are up against national teams rep-

resenting Canada and Slovakia and two from the host United States. Withrow was slated to open the round-robin tournament yesterday against Team Canada.

On paper, the Withrow moms’ mission appears daunting: they are, after all, culled from the six women’s teams that are a part of the vibrant ball hockey program run out of Withrow Park for both youth and adults.

They’re also giving up a lot on age. The masters division starts at 35; the Withrow ladies average age would be in the 40s – and not on the low end. On the other hand, they’re >>>BALL, page 2

Ball hockey team at world masters championships >>>from page 1 much more than beer league pretenders. They earned a silver medal at this summer’s provincial championships, while winning it last year (which qualified them for the world championship tournament) in the masters division. They’ve also earned a ticket to next year’s Canadian national championships. They take it seriously with coaches, physio staff and exercise homework they have to account for each week. As one of the players, Angie Ganter, noted Tuesday in a phone interview while on her way to Pearson International Airport, while they will face more skilled players in Tampa Bay, “we’re certainly going to be the most fit team down there.” Asked about her own fitness regimen, Ganter, a mother of two, adds, “a combination of playing hockey throughout the year – I play both ice and ball hockey in different leagues – swimming, elliptical, weight training and

then just weekly runs.” And there are no ringers. Most are local moms who, after watching their kids play, thought it would be fun to give the sport a try themselves. Day jobs Most or all of them have day jobs. “We have a few doctors, I’m an emerg nurse, we have a photographer, a bunch of business people, we have physio, HR – it’s just a wide range,” Ganter said. They’ve been working equally hard off the court on fundraising to help defray the sizeable costs to haul their entourage to Tampa Bay, including a popular toilet paper sale, hockey pools, oneday co-ed tourney, league dance – “we did quite well.” Players are Erin Hartnett, Tracey Ogus, Heather Pollock, Stephanie Barrington, Angie Ganter, Ariana Gillis, Anne Scofich, Mary Nasello, Yani Hamdani, Lisa Martin, Lauren

Seniors and safety among key issues in Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth race Mark a. cadiz mcadiz@insidetoronto.com

C

ity council candidates in Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth have their sights set on election day. For residents living in the ward north of Danforth Avenue, the growing senior population and increasing concern for public safety are just a part of the handful of issues facing the neighbourhood. “It is difficult to be on your own, especially if you are experiencing a variety of illnesses,” said Choy MacLellan, a senior who lives in the ward. After making a visit to a nearby bank on the Danforth, MacLellan struggled to make it down a few steps with her walking aid. She has lived in the neighbourhood since 1971. “I think seniors should get additional assistance at their homes. When I was seriously ill a few years ago, there was nobody to help me,” she said. MacLellan and thousands of other seniors call the neighbourhood home. According to the last city census in 2011, more than 9,000 residents are above 60 years of age – making it one of the largest growing demographics in the ward. Incumbent councillor Mary Fragedakis said there are programs to help seniors, but many might not be aware of them. “A couple years ago we had a seniors’ forum at the East York Civic Centre to address the services available to them,” Fragedakis said. Another concern Fragedakis identifies is the mistreatment of seniors. There have been times when seniors have been evicted solely because they were not able to comprehend documents they were reading before being evicted. Some had language issues and others had mental health issues, she said. With the growing senior population there are some new challenges.

Six candidates are running for the council seat in Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth in the Oct. 27 municipal election.

Social services are out there, such as supportive housing and transportation offered by WoodGreen, a social services agency specializing in senior assistance. The City of Toronto also has a program that provides free snow shoveling for seniors. First-time candidate Dave Andre said there might be gaps with the flow of information and these gaps need to be identified to improve services for seniors. “We need an electronic newsletter and a mail-out newsletter for seniors to share information which will also create a specific point of contact,” Andre said. Andre also wants to develop a community program to get local youth involved to help seniors. Candidate John Papadakis, a life-long resident of East York, said some seniors are facing even greater barriers. “One veteran came to my office asking for help. He was in tears because he has been waiting for housing assistance for the last five years...I think it’s ridiculous how we treat our veterans,” Papadakis

said. He added that the relationship between the city and province has suffered, since the province has pulled funding for many social issues affecting the city, including housing for seniors. “The city is hurting for funding. Everything is being downloaded to the city and people are suffering,” Papadakis said. On Broadview Avenue, just north of Danforth, business owners such as Nima Kamranpour are concerned about neighbourhood safety. Kamranpour moved his Persian rugs business into the neighbourhood in 2006. He said there are people on this stretch of Broadview Avenue coming from vulnerable backgrounds who might be suffering from mental health and family issues. “In the evening there are safety problems…a lot of the residents who might want to come shop avoid this part of the street because it’s an uncomfortable situation.” Fragedakis, aware of the section on Broadview, said the challenge is finding a way to coexist with the

least amount of upset within the community. “All parties involved need to identify the issues and try to come up with solutions. If the people see that the community is a caring one and want to bring change, then there will be change,” Fragedakis said. Andre’s campaign office, located on Broadview, wanted to fully grasp the situation head-on. According to businesses in the ward, some areas have become havens for petty crime and drugs. “I’ve visited some places, one being a back alley where residents have complained about people drinking, loitering and selling drugs. We wanted to verify what the businesses were saying, and to make sure there was a regular police presence if needed,” he said. According to Andre, safety has been a big issue brought up in conservations he has had with residents in the ward. Andre believes community partnerships are key to addressing safety issues, stressing the importance of having a process in place to handle these issues when they arise. Papadakis said the area need “boots on the ground.” He wants to develop a foot patrol program with the police in the community. “Although driving by in a police cruiser is great, it is not as effective as having police on the ground,” he said. “When they are on the ground they get to know the community, and are able to better identify individuals causing problems.” Other election issues in the ward are traffic congestion, street infrastructure and rising housing costs. Other candidates running in the ward are Ricardo Francis, Jimmy Vlachos and Hank Martyn, who were unavailable for comment. The municipal election is Monday, Oct. 27.

Greenwood Dog Park’s Ditch the Dust campaign continues JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A final big push is on to crowdsource funds to ‘Ditch the Dust’ at the Greenwood Dog Park. The $4,000 Indiegogo campaign, which can be found online at www.indiegogo. com/projects/greenwooddog-park, was launched July 21 and is set to conclude tomorrow. “There are a lot of cool perks,” said Katie Reid, a certified professional dog walker/trainer, noting with Indiegogo all funds raised are retained by the campaign’s creator, which in this case is the Greenwood Dog Park Association’s Ditch the Dust team. “What a great way to give back to the community and get something in return for your dog,” she said. This crowdsourcing campaign is part of a greater effort to raise $30,000 to make the east-end, off-leash dog park a safe, healthy and fun place for dogs to play by replacing the dusty and foul-smelling granite sand surface with pea gravel. Reid, alongside fellow Leslieville resident Stacey Grieve, are co-ordinating the initiative, which started in the spring of 2012 with a small group of residents getting together to discuss their concerns about the crushed granite (sand) surface at the Greenwood Dog Park. They are seeking a new surface for the dog park and accepting donations online. Corporate sponsors are also welcome to get in touch.

Pan Am Games to highlight our wonderful city T

he Pan Am/Parapan Games are coming to Toronto next summer, bringing thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of fans and media with them. Tickets went on sale this week, and Toronto residents have until Oct. 6 to order early-bird tickets for the events they most want to see by going to TORONTO2015.org/tickets While they are not on the same scale as the Olympics, the Pan Am Games will feature approximately 6,000 top athletes from 41 countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean competing in 36 our view sports. From July 7 to 26, Toronto will be the place to be for competition Civic pride in many of those sports including track and field, aquatics, sparked by basketball, BMX biking, tennis 2015 Games and much more. And right after the Pan Am Games finish, the Parapan Am Games take centre stage in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 15. What makes these games especially exciting is that not all of the events are centred in the downtown core. They’ve been spread out in facilities from the York University campus in North York to Centennial Park in Etobicoke and into east Scarborough. It makes the Games accessible to so many more fans, and will in a number of cases give residents the opportunity to watch international athletics in facilities they can walk to from their homes. From what we see and hear among our newspaper’s readers, there’s great excitement about next summer’s games. Residents are looking forward to attending events in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough that will host aquatics, fencing, pentathlon and roller sports events next summer. They are also looking forward to the legacy of these facilities in their communities. For more on the Games and their impact on our communities, see our feature series at bit.ly/Agn5R0 There’s also no small amount of civic pride involved in hosting these games. A good part of the world will be coming to visit us next summer, and we are looking forward to showing them what a wonderful city Toronto is.

‘Weak mayor’ system adds to absurdity

T

he mayoral race for the City of Toronto has, so far, been too long, too expensive and too predictable. I say that even with all of the twists and turns that have been taking place over the past week with Rob Ford’s health issues and the switch with his brother Doug. What is most absurd about the mayoral race is the fact that we have a “weak mayor” system. Despite the long campaign and expense, the mayor of Toronto has only one vote and the real power lays in city council. That was aptly demonstrated when council legally stripped Mayor Rob Ford of his powers and handed them over to the deputy mayor. So no matter who wins the position of mayor, the reality is that the real winner will always be city council. That is if they manage to get organized and work together.

joe cooper watchdog I haven’t written about the city of Indianapolis, Indiana and its forced amalgamation for a while, but it’s worth looking at again. Back in 1969, the Republicans were able to force the progressive Democrat downtown city of Indianapolis to amalgamate with its suburbs. The suburbs were dominated by conservative Republicans who then outvoted the Democrats on their city council and also brought in a succession of Republican mayors. Our forced amalgamation under the provincial Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris in the 1990s was undertaken for the same purpose, no matter what “official” justifications were given. It was no surprise that Conservative-backed Mel

Lastman came into power as mayor for the first two terms. Unfortunately, that regime was so mismanaged we needed the two terms of reform under then-mayor David Miller to bring in the reforms needed to bring credibility and order back to municipal politics. However, the Miller period was also one of growing dissent and polarization between the conservative suburbs and the more progressive downtown. That is where we now stand, with the Ford brothers representing the conservative suburbs, Oliva Chow representing the progressive downtown and John Tory bridging both. Frankly, the breakdown of the support numbers for each of the candidates (with Rob and Doug being interchangeable) is truly a reflection of geography. It is also a reflection of the failure of Olivia Chow to break out from a bubble of

her own making that has prevented her from making inroads into the city’s suburbs. John Tory, on the other hand, has run a smart and pragmatic campaign that has recognized the real geo-political makeup of the City of Toronto. The reality is that the old municipal identities have not disappeared and people still identify more with their communities than with the city as a whole. The Fords are playing a “them against us” campaign, which is why they are losing, while Chow is running her campaign as if she is running for city councillor, not for mayor. Tory, in my opinion, is sounding like a mayoralty candidate who wants to unify the city and make it work. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. the city minted mayoral candidate Doug Ford was spending his time at the bedside of newly-minted Ward 2 council candidate Rob Ford – so not saying much of anything. The sound of shuffling feet was just about deafening. Quiet times aren’t always a bad thing, though. And in this one, it might just be useful to sit a spell, and in the absence of blaring pitches of mayoral agendas – just think a bit about where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go. Here on in, this election might finally just be about the ideas. Well, not entirely the ideas: we’re all a little partisan, some casting ballots for New Democrats and

certain Liberals, others voting for certain other Liberals and Conservatives. Some of us feel strongly enough about that to pick a mayor now. But for the rest of us: what an unexpected opportunity to pick not so much the person of the mayor, but the kind of city we want. In this quiet time we might ask: do we really want to pay more taxes to build a subway in Scarborough and more stations on an electrified GO line? It’s so much easier to think about these questions when we’re not also deciding how we feel about all the other ugly matters that have consumed us until now. Clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. Best savour it while it lasts.

The Ford family’s personal and political kerfuffle last week sent some serious shockwaves into the early part of this week of the mayoral campaign – serious enough to send things into a bona fide stall. On Monday and Tuesday, three of four mayoral debates died on the vine. Olivia Chow got out on Tuesday morning to host a news conference, rescheduled from last week, to let voters know that four west-end progressive councillors were behind her mayoral bid. John Tory, the candidate responsible for putting the kibosh on those three debates, held a news conference an hour later that was somehow less surprising: to remind voters that he intended to keep promises related to gridlock that he’d made during the summer. Up until the print deadline for this column Tuesday afternoon, newly-

54 Division honours post-secondary bursary recipients PRESENTATION: The Toronto Police 54 Division Community Police Liason Committee in East York recently presented it’s $1,000 post-secondary school bursaries. Two charged in fatal Danforth stabbing Police have now charged two males and are looking for another in the Sept. 8 stabbing death of 22-year-old Dwayne Goodwin. Police said Goodwin and another male were stabbed in the torso near Danforth Avenue and Dawes Road at 5:19 p.m. Both were rushed to St. Michael’s hospital where Goodwin was pronounced dead. The other victim has since been released from hospital. “There was an altercation between two groups of males known to each other,” Det. Rob North said during a news conference at police headquarters Monday, Sept. 15. “I want to make it clear this was not a random act of violence.” Vaughn Shears, 19, and a 16-year-old boy, both of Toronto, have been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. The 16-year-old can’t be

identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Mehmet Akkurt, 22, also of Toronto, is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder and attempted murder. “I’d like to appeal to Mr. Akkurt to obtain legal counsel and to surrender himself to police,” North said. “Further, we’ve identified four other males who participated in the assault that led to the homicide. I’m also requesting those individuals to contact counsel and turn yourself in.” Police didn’t release the names of the four males who they say took part in the assault. North said members of the community and the Danforth Village Business Improvement Area assisted in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Sexual assault wToronto suspect sought police are asking for

the public’s help to locate a male wanted for a sexual assault in Riverdale. The incident happened Monday at 6:30 p.m. near Broadview Avenue and St. Matthew’s Road. Police said a woman was walking in the area when she became aware of an unknown man behind her. She then engaged the man in conversation. After a brief chat, the man allegedly sexually assaulted her. The suspect is described as a white male, about 5’4” with a slight build and unshaven with light-coloured hair that was possibly brown. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt and faded blue jeans. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-5500.

Making a difference ata NOMINATE SOMEONE TODAY!

One Star Time Nominations are now being accepted for the

Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards

The strength of our community lies in solid citizens. If you know a young person, aged 6 to 17, who is involved in worthwhile community service; a special person who is contributing while living with a limitation; a youth who has performed an act of heroism; or a ‘good kid’ who shows a commitment to making life better for others, doing more than is normally expected of someone their age – help us recognize their contribution – nominate them today!

skips out on ‘Big Transit’ debate wTory Mayoral front runner John Tory withdrew from a scheduled transit debate this week with Olivia Chow just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin. The event still took place as scheduled on Monday, but with only Chow taking part. Earlier in the day, Tory’s campaign team released a media statement confirming he would not attend the Big Transit Mayoral Debate, which was co-organized by the advocacy group TTCriders and the Ryerson University Student Union. Tory blamed “extraordinary demands” on his time. Chow used the opportunity to hold a solo Q and A on her transit plans – and continually criticize the absent Tory in the process. About 150 people attended the event, which was held at Ryerson. NEW AWARD FOR ACCESSIBILITY The province is accepting nominations for a new annual award recognizing advocates for accessibility. Named after the outgoing

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Lieutenant Governor, the David C. Onley Award for Leadership in Accessibility will be bestowed on three individuals and one employer showing leadership in fighting for disability and accessibility issues. Individual winners will receive cash prizes of $5,000 plus a commemorative certificate. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 3, and the awards will be handed out in May. Visit www.citizenship.gov. on.ca for more. The province has mandated all buildings across the province become barrier-free by 2025. The TTC has already stated it cannot meet the 2025 deadline to make all of its stations accessible without more money. SUBWAY SERVICE DISRUPTION wUnion and St. Andrew sta-

tions will not offer subway service this weekend due to ongoing subway platform repairs. There will be no subway

service between Union and St. Andrew on both Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21. University line trains will return north to Downsview upon reaching St. Andrew while Yonge line trains will go no further south than Union. The TTC is recommending making use of the 504 King streetcar or simply walking. TOOL GIVES TRANSIT OPTIONS wONLINE

Just in time for Smar t Commute Week, a new web tool tracks how best to get from point A to B using a variety of transportation options. The initiative is part of a Metrolinx program encouraging alternative methods of commuting. Using the tool you can find out travel options, how long the trip will take, how many calories are burned and how much fuel is consumed for a given journey depending on the choice of transportation. To try out the tool, visit www.smartcommute.ca. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears on Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

On Now at The Brick!

I love aging and I don’t wanna quit John went from high school "kick out" to being a Director of Education and having a secondary school named in his honour. In his eighties John is a vital role model as he helps you grow old disgracefully. John’s energetic and entertaining presentations bring a new sense of hope and a fresh view of what’s possible to audiences. His performances have entertained and motivated audiences throughout southern Ontario. Cancer, heart attack, marriage failure, alcohol abuse, knee replacements and a pathetic high school guidance teacher never diminished his enthusiasm for life. Join us as he teaches you how to age fearlessly with his fabulous "so what" philosophy: so what if my hips need replacing; so what if my skin needs ironing. Try his philosophy for two weeks with this guarantee – if you aren’t having a better time, he'll happily refund your misery. This event is part of our LivingWell lecture series and it's free, but an RSVP is required. Call (416) 331-9797.
