Leaside Gardens is on tap for a Sunday, Oct. 6 debut of its brand new $11-million ice surface. “Opening the new rink at Leaside Gardens will be an important milestone for the Leaside community and we invite you to join us to help celebrate the occasion,” stated Ray White, arena board chair for Leaside Memorial Community Gardens, in his latest update on the arena’s website. aiming to hold the community celebration the day before the scheduled opening on Saturday, Oct. 5. The new ice surface will turn the arena into a twin-plex, with the original rink having opened for the season Sept. 3. Parents with children enrolled in a preschool program provided by École Napoléon, a French immersion school on Danforth Avenue, are scrambling to find a new facility for their children this week. “I think everyone has been in a state of shock,” said Erin Young, a parent with a three-

and-half-year-old son enrolled part time in the program. The facility’s preschool was shut down as of Monday after the Ontario Ministry of Education found it was operating without a licence for the past three years despite being inspected yearly by the ministry.
