Stories of T. Eaton Co. enlistees sought for Do You Know My Story? initiative CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Pte. Henry Agassiz signed up to serve in The Great War in 1916, his proud portrait joined those of more than 2,200 of his fellow enlistees from T. Eaton Company’s Toronto store on the flagship’s walls. Sadly, the next time Agassiz’s name was inscribed was on the Eaton’s Memorial Plaque as one of 315 company men killed overseas. Still, his story - like those of each and every one of the everyday working men and women who signed to serve in the First World War - is an integral part of Canada’s history, said Nancy Reynolds, curator of Mackenzie House museum. "It’s often hard to tell the stories of individuals unless they’re famous or they’ve done something, but that’s what we’re trying to do," she said of Do You Know My Story? - an outreach project being undertaken in partnership between the City of Toronto’s Museums & Heritage Services and the Archives of Ontario. The goal of the project is to tell the personal stories of those T. Eaton Co. Limited employees like Agassiz who, perhaps enticed by company owner John Craig Eaton’s offer to pay wages to his employee enlistees on top of their military pay, signed up to fight

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Historical interpreter Bruce Beaton holds photos of John Craig Eaton, son of Timothy Eaton, founder of T. Eaton Company Ltd., left, and Henry Agassiz and his family at Mackenzie House for their Do You Know My Story project. overseas. "We want to tell the stories of ordinary people: how they came to Canada, why they came to Canada, how they ended up at Eaton’s, what happened to them and their families during and after the war," Reynolds said. She noted that, in total, Eaton paid out $2.2 million in wages to his 3,327 Eaton’s employees from across Canada who enlisted. "It’s those ordinary stories that are so often left untold." The starting point for the project was compiling

uReport

the old portraits - more than 2,000 of which survived to be displayed in Eaton’s Goes to War, an online exhibit created by the Archives of Ontario in 2014. The next step is outreach, said Bruce Beaton, who’s leading the Do You Know My Story? project. "This is a history that lives in the families of these men," said Beaton, a historical interpreter at Mackenzie House, calling on the relatives of First World War veterans from Eaton’s to come forward with information. "One of the questions I

always ask the families is, what does this person mean to you in your life? And they always have some answer - be it how they sacrificed, or their duty to commit to public service, or perhaps something more personal. Whatever it is, this means something to people; the lives of these people still have meaning within their families - and that’s what I’m trying to access." So far, however, Beaton said he’s been able to collect life stories to match just 18 of the more than 2,000 Eaton’s portraits - Pri-

vate Agassiz’s among them. Agassiz’s family history is one Beaton has been able to piece together via a combination of family accounts, his military records, and an expenditure ledger from City of Toronto Archives. A Nova Scotia native, Agassiz was a 37-year-old husband and father of four - with another baby on the way - when he enlisted on April 3, 1916. Earning just $15 a month as a trimmer at Eaton’s at the time, Agassiz was older than most other enlistees at the time, and

was perhaps enticed to do so by Eaton’s full-wage offer to married enlistees in order to provide for his growing family. His tragic death in France at the Battle of the Somme less than six months after his enlistment, however, left his wife Eugenie, son Alfred, and daughters Vaudine, Muriel, and Dorothy in such extreme poverty that newborn son Claude died because they were unable to feed him, according his granddaughter. At 14, Agassiz’s only surviving son Alfred was forced to drop out of high school to support the family. The Agassiz family story is a valuable piece of Canada’s history, Reynolds said, because it demonstrates the sacrifices made by so many ordinary people in extraordinary times. "His is an important story of World War I, because that was the first time that you saw such a large domestic army," she said. "These were not all (career) soldiers, so when they got home, there was that feeling for the first time that the government owed them something; that it owed the families of those killed. And that marked a real change in the way people looked at government and what its responsibilities were." Beaton is still seeking further story contributions to the Do You Know My Story? project, which will be on exhibit at Mackenzie House starting on Sept. 29. The names and photos of First World War veterans from Eaton’s can be found at http://bit.ly/2jwvPyE To submit a story, go to www.toronto.ca/mackenziehouse

Let registered nurses prescribe medication We’ve almost all been there at one time or another. Your child has an earache or your parent in a longterm care facility has a bladder infection. Patients with these conditions can wait hours for treatment, sometimes at an already-busy hospital emergency department. Could authorizing nurses to prescribe drugs for non-complex conditions make the Ontario health-care system more efficient and effective? The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) thinks so, and the Ontario government agrees. This month, Metroland Media was the only Toronto media outlet to report the Ontario government is preparing to amend the Nursing Act to authorize registered nurses to prescribe certain drugs for non-complex conditions and to communicate a diagnosis. If approved, the changes would also authorize nurse practitioners to prescribe controlled substances. "Increased access to health care, improved outcomes and a better patient experience - all are direct results on investments we’ve made and hard work done by nurses and others," Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins said in a statement to Metroland Media Toronto. RNAO has been lobbying for years to expand the practice scope of Ontario’s 96,000 registered nurses. Registered nurses bring a wealth of knowledge gained from years of experience in front-line patient care, and for many, from ongoing continuing education. A 2012 RNAO report concluded the medical knowledge of registered nurses (who have a four-year degree), and nurse practitioners (who have a degree plus postgraduate education) has not been fully utilized. As RNAO CEO Doris Grinspun said,"Now registered nurses and nurse practitioners can become a huge solution to health care access issues, not only for people, but for complications and system ineffectiveness." In Britain, nurses have been prescribing medication for 15 years, Grinspun noted. Alberta and Manitoba is moving toward developing a prescribing role for registered nurses. It makes sense for Ontario to do the same. Registered nurses on social media asked if increased responsibility and liability will be accompanied by a pay raise. Some nurse practitioners argue, since they already prescribe, why not focus on their scope of practice first? Prescribing medication is a serious responsibility. The Ontario government’s move to amending the legislation must be met with the education required to protect patient and nurses alike. Allowing nurses to use their wealth of knowledge could be just the prescription needed to benefit patients and the Ontario health-care system.

An ALICE among Toronto’s payday lenders After nine years in Scarborough Village, Maranatha Auguste knows a lot of people who take payday loans, and she considers them "the best business ever." "It’s an addiction," says Auguste. "There’s people that go there every week." Friends and acquaintances returning to the cash shops - the bright red, yellow, or green storefronts now so common in Weston, Downsview and other parts of Toronto never get to use their own money. "By the time they get paid, they don’t have no money left," says Auguste. The province on Jan. 1 forced payday lenders to cut the maximum $21 interest they charged for a short-term $100-loan down

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto to $18. But imagine that interest piling up if you can’t pay the entire loan back, plus overdraft charges. That’s what payday lenders want. A personal support worker and mother of two, Auguste works whatever hours an agency gives her. For now, that’s two parttime jobs in a North York retirement home.

A few years ago, she took a payday loan. "I was not making enough hours. I couldn’t meet the bills." Auguste borrowed $300. The lender charged her $45 in fees, and she still had to pay back $360, but did. Auguste now prefers to use her credit card when short of funds, but says some people don’t even have that. The payday industry describes two customer personalities, the ALICE, or Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed - in other words, the working poor - and the ARTI, Asset Rich, Temporarily Illiquid, who use the loans as "interim financing" for unexpected expenses. Auguste is an ALICE,

one of many. Her $11.25 minimum wage comes to $1,500 a month after taxes. Her husband, also working for an agency, gets $11.25 hourly at a food lab. "Our rent is already $1,200. What can we do to pay the rest of the (bills)?" she asks. For people offering you work, it’s a game, says Auguste. "While you work like a horse or a donkey," she adds, they’re happy to give you $11.25, "because the government says that’s what your work is worth." Payday lenders are just a symptom of something larger. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Tunnelling for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line is complete DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Tunnelling for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line is complete and now Metrolinx is bidding adieu to the heavy machinery that dug those tunnels. This week Metrolinx is extracting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) affectionately called Don, which along with TBM Humber dug the eastern portion of the side-by-side underground tunnels from Laird Drive to Yonge Street. Tunnelling the eastern portion had actually ended at the end of summer in 2016. The western leg of tunnel boring, from Mount Dennis to Yonge had been completed in January 2015. The TBM extraction process is an involved one.

TBM Don, which tunnelled the north tunnel, weighs approximately 400 tonnes and is 10 metres long. It’s extraction at Yonge and Eglinton started March 13 when crews pulled out its cutter head. Metrolinx had scheduled to extract the forward shell March 15, the trailing shield March 17, and the stationary shield March 23. While the extraction of each item was scheduled to happen during daytime hours, each item has to be loaded onto a truck and shipped away at night. Spectators were invited to watch a crane pull out each item. TBM Humber is scheduled for extraction in April. "Once they get the tunnel boring machines out, they’ll go in and start laying tracks," Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said. TBMs Humber and Don started their tunnelling in 2015, and dug 3.3 kilometres of tunnel. According to Crosstown

Justin Greaves/Metroland

The cutter head of the tunnel boring machine is lifted from the extraction shaft just east of Yonge & Eglinton on Monday, Mar. 13. The 400-tone machine bored 3.3 km underground for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. officials, tunnelling the underground LRT extracted enough muck to fill the Air Canada Centre to the height of the CN Tower. Crews are currently working on many features of the Crosstown simultaneously. Work has already started on all 15 under-

that we can get the project done on time," Akins said. "The TBMs finished their tunnelling a little ahead of schedule so that’s going well. Everything is on track still for opening late 2021." She noted that Metrolinx is focused on getting

ground stations, while preparatory work for the 10 surface stations will soon get underway. Crews are building cross passages in the tunnels, including emergency exits between stations. "All of that work happens at the same time so

the vehicles on schedule to ensure the line starts running on time. The Crosstown will be a 19-km light rail transit (LRT) line that runs along Eglinton Avenue with a central 10-km underground section. The Crosstown will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east. The underground tunnels are between 16 and 20 metres below ground. The Crosstown is expected to be up to 60 per cent faster than bus service today. The line will connect to three TTC subway stations, 54 local bus routes, three GO Transit lines and the UP Express. The Crosstown will be fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers at all stops. Officials say the Crosstown will improve travel times and change the way people move through the heart of the city. Imagine that today you could take a bus in East York or Riverdale, go to the Donlands subway station, and then get a subway train directly to Union Station. Or how about getting out to Pearson Airport via a subway going west along Eglinton avenue. Imagine being able to get to the Scarborough Town Centre by taking the subway that goes along Sheppard Avenue, which would have been 11 years old this year. All that could have been in place if the TTC plan written in the early 1980s called "Network 2011" had been acted upon. When the NDP were in power under then-premier Bob Rae, the Network 2011 plan was begun and work started on the western Eglinton subway line. But when the Conservatives under former premier Mike Harris were elected in 1995, Harris personally ordered work on

JOE COOPER Watchdog the subway stopped and what had been completed to be filled in at the cost of several million dollars. Instead Harris ordered subway work to start on a subway under Sheppard Avenue to the Scarborough Town Centre and for the Scarborough RT to be replaced with subway tracks. Ironically, both of those projects were never completed due to lack of funds. All Mayor John Tory is doing today is promoting the continuation of that inefficient and expensive plan, which is far more political than practical.

No wonder that it is now costing billions of dollars, going far over budget and is way behind schedule. Frankly, it is a project that never should have been undertaken in the first place, and now it is simply a huge financial drain. If the city had gone with the Transit City plan that had been developed by former mayor David Miller, they would have incorporated a cost-effective solution that would have moved more people and improved the efficiency of existing subway lines with the use of larger subway cars. As it stands now, we will probably have to wait until 2020 before this current political debacle is resolved. Joe Cooper is a longtime East York resident and community activist. role of Mina in the show. Pollack-Paris’ character is named Mina. "Ironically, Mina was my nickname growing up," she said during a recent interview. "I guess it was just meant to be." Pollack-Paris, who has lived near Dundas Street East and Broadview Avenue for 12 years, said she also shares many qualities with her character. "She is a performer and dancer, and is charismatic and outgoing," she said. "She’s going to bring some new energy and some dancing, of course." Pollack-Paris said she is really enjoying the role of Mina - an "all-around funny girl" who is also very sweet. The second season of

The Stanley Dynamic, which was filmed last summer, premièred on YTV on Feb. 27. It airs weeknights at 6 p.m. Pollack-Paris, who first started dancing when she was just two years old, was only eight when she received a full scholarship to Interplay School of Dance. There, she trained in hip hop, jazz, Irish, ballet and modern dance. The following year, she auditioned and was offered a spot on the Raptors Dance Pack. Her professional dance career has included working with Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Big Sean, Kesia Chante, Aleesia and Danny Fernandes. Pollack-Paris has also been a contestant on Season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. She

also played the role of Tiffany on The Next Step for three seasons and has done guest appearances on Suicide Squad, Degrassi: The Next Generation and Glee. Performing in the Super Bowl alongside Lady Gaga was a definite career highlight. "It was super nerveracking. It was such a great platform," said Pollack-Paris, who was also a dancer in Lady Gaga’s last tour, Art Rave. For the last four years, Pollack-Paris has also run her own dance academy for women called The Girls Club. "Right now I’m focusing on my dance academy, but moving forward I’m open and ready for anything that comes my way," she said.

Presented by the 6ix Clicks Collective, the exhibit aims to give a taste of the current flavour of the neighbourhood through the faces and words of those who live, work, and play there. The gallery, on the third

floor, is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Focus on Gerrard, which also includes a series of photography walks which continue Saturday, March 18 and 25 at 1:30 p.m., is being produced in conjunction with the Myseum of Toronto’s annual Intersections Festival, which exhibits and showcases different perspectives of the city’s natural, cultural, and historic diversity. Registration is not required for the walks, which will all

start and end at the Riverdale Hub. The 6ix Clicks Collective is a group of Torontobased photographers/visual storytellers who document the places, people and spaces where community identities are visible. The group’s goal is to encourage visual storytelling through exhibitions, digital formats, and publications that highlight the members’ work as a group and as individuals. Linsmore Tavern hosts fundraiser for employee Kristy Boynton at work when fire gutted her shared apartment ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Kristy Boynton was finishing her shift at Linsmore Tavern at 3 a.m. Feb. 26 when she got a call that would change her world. "I was (thinking) why is this guy calling right now," the single mother said. The guy was Boynton’s landlord, and he told her that her apartment was engulfed in flames. Luckily, Boynton’s roommate Jay made it out unharmed. And Boynton’s one-and-a-half- yearold daughter Riley was at Boynton’s grandmother’s house at the time. However, Jay’s cat Matty and Boynton’s two beloved cats, Har-

ley and Skit, perished in the fire. "I loved those cats. They were my family," Boynton, 26, said. "I know they might be cats to some people, but I cried for days.. My child loved playing with them too." Boynton’s apartment, at 718 College St. in Little Italy, was destroyed. "We lost everything," she said. "It was kind of surreal. You don’t think something like that will ever happen to you." Toronto Fire Services Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said the twoalarm blaze was likely caused by an unattended candle. "The area of origin looks like a bedroom," he said. "The estimated property and contents loss was $100,000." Boynton’s friend and coworker, Tarah McMaster, is organizing a fundraiser for Boynton at Linsmore Tavern at 1298 Danforth Ave. Thursday, Mach 23. The event, dubbed Phoenix

Rising: Fundraiser in support of Kristy and Riley, begins 7 p.m. and features free food and live music. "We have four bands on board and we’ve had a lot of local restaurants come on board as sponsors and donate gift certificates, " McMaster said. "It is pay what you can at the door. As well, we will be having a cash raffle." Donations of household items, kitchen supplies, bedding, toys, toiletries and food gift cards are also being collected. A GoFundMe account set up by Boynton’s mother has also raised more than $4,800. "Kristy is an extremely hard working kind soul who is a determined and committed single mother to her little girl," the account webpage said. "Please, please find it in your heart to donate as much or as little as possible." Visit gofundme.com/ umqxp4-house-fire-disaster to make a donation.

An eclectic mix of Torontonians made it out to Recognize and Roast Justin Van Dette at UG3 Live earlier this month. Among the attendees were Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor John Tory, Julian Fantino, Anthony Farnell from Global news, Ken Reid from Sportsnet, MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith, MPP Arthur Potts, and councillor John Burnside. Attendees also included his friends from Michael Garron Hospital, fellow board members from the Parkview Hills Community Association, and high school friends from East York Collegiate. JVD, as he is affectionately known to friends, is a tireless community activist. He has spearheaded many initiatives in and around East York, most recently the East York Hall of Fame. The March 2 "roast" came about from friends who thought it might be a great idea for a night out and opportunity to raise money for a good cause. All jokes he kindly took with a grain of salt. Although he spends his days in community relations at the Michael Garron Hospital, he is a friend to many charitable organizations. At Van Dette’s request, all proceeds from Thursday’s event were directed to the Aids Committee of Toronto. More than 200 people were in attendance, raising approximately $25,000 for ACT.
