come," Ashvin Gehani, the establishment’s co-owner, told Metroland Media Toronto during a recent interview. East of York Gourmet Food Co. broke the news to its customers in early April on its Facebook page that it wouldn’t be returning to the market for a second year. "This was not our decision," the post read. "We loved having the longest lineups and weekly sellouts. We also relished being the only business owned and operated by people of colour." Dozens of people commented on the note, many of whom said they’d continue to support the eatery regardless of their participation in the market. In an April 10 statement, Farmers’ Markets Ontario said the East Lynn Park Market is one of only three branded MyMarkets in Ontario and has the mission of being a "bone-fide producer based entity which will champion the cause of real farmers and producers across the province." That being said, vendors must be verified under the MyPick Verification Program, which means they produce all that they sell on their farms. "The MyMarket brand exists to showcase local

As with most customer-focused farmers markets, our goal is to create a welcoming environment that celebrates local food while offering visitors the opportunity to not only purchase fresh local food, but have the option of enjoying some ready-to-eat food while at the market," FMO said. "We therefore encourage participation of local restaurants and prepared food vendors at the Market, providing they have complied with the MyMarket Prepared Food Vendor

regulations and agreement." In this case, market vendors are required to purchase some local product from specific ’MyPick’ vendors. "In 2017, we once again encourage a small number of restaurants and/or other prepared food vendors to participate in the MyMarkets," the statement read. "Given that there are typically numerous applications for these limited spots in the market, preference is given to those vendors who have demonstrat-

ed a consistent commitment to their role as a MyMarket vendor in the past and also meet all the conditions as noted in the Prepared Food vendor agreement." Gehani said the decision is short-sighted. "I feel FMO is not willing to adapt. They’re not meeting the (community’s) needs with the vendors," he told Metroland Media Toronto. "They have the right to include or exclude who they want but as a vendor of prepared food we always had a long line up. We were

easily one of the most popular vendors at the market. Disappointed by the decision, Gahani - who grew up in the community and still lives in the area - said they’re taking the high road and would be seeking out other options. "In life, things happen. Out of necessity breeds opportunity," he said, adding in recent weeks they’ve been approached by some other markets and will take part as they see fit. "We’ll do what is in our best interest and what’s in our customers’ best interest."

Ten years ago, volunteers from the Danforth East Community Association founded the local farmers’ market with the goal of revitalizing the Danforth-Woodbine neighbourhood. "The market is the result of countless hours that DECA volunteers have dedicated to make happen for about 20 weeks each and every summer," the organization said in a statement to The Mirror. "What started with a passionate group of people looking to bring fresh, Ontario-grown food to our urban neighbourhood has grown over the years to become a weekly, anchor event in this community." The community group partnered with FMO, which they indicated is "responsible for selecting the vendors according to their criteria." Local food vendors featuring food from the farmers, local restaurants, and other producers were added to the roster in 2012. The Danforth East Community Association takes care of the rest like weekly children’s activities organized by local businesses, libraries, and high-school students as well as a community booth and a wellness booth that all showcase local organizations, interest groups, charities and practitioners.

Farmers’ Markets Ontario says showcasing farmers is the goal

phase of the work - improvements to the wading pool and tennis courts should begin in the fall. "We will miss our Fairmount location but hope that our regular market supporters find their way to Greenwood (Park) to continue to support their favourite farmers," market founder Kim AntoniusPeabody wrote in an email to The Mirror. She said finding a new temporary location for the market was key as it draws many people and is an important source of revenue for participating farmers.

With construction set to take over Fairmount Park this spring and summer, the popular farmers’ market that has been held there for five years will be getting a new temporary home in Leslieville. Barring any major obstacles, the plan is to relocate the Fairmount Park Farmers Market to Greenwood Park at 150 Greenwood Ave. at Dundas Street East for the 2017 season. Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher said she’s

"100 per cent supportive" of the move and said she’d do what she can to help. "I’m going to help them figure out the best location (for the market)," the Toronto-Danforth representative said earlier this week. "We just need to figure out how we’re going to drive the trucks into the park." Construction at Fairmount Park, which will be replacing sod, installing a new drainage system, and refurbishing the park’s baseball diamond, is slated to begin in May. The next

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com From body image issues to mental health concerns to peer pressure over drugs and alcohol, teen girls today face plenty of struggles. Having experienced her share of challenges and having seen young girls today cope with many of the same issues, East York resident Tanya Marie Lee has started up a book club that aims to make a difference. The "A Room of Your Own" club caters to girls aged 13 to 18 with a particular focus on girls in at-risk communities. Lee, who became a teen mom at 19, arranges for authors to come in and give readings, selecting books that often touch on topics that are relevant to book club members. "We have a reading from the author and then we use that to generate discussion," Lee said. "The girls get to ask the author questions that can be about the

volves primarily around mental health. "I try to remember what I was going through as a teenager," Lee said. "There

are issues around body image, sexuality and a lot of other problems girls have that affect their mental health."

Since starting A Room of Your Own in January, Lee has reached out to schools around Toronto to get more girls involved. A few have already signed on, and the organization’s founder hopes to see its impact spread worldwide. "I’m hoping we can raise money to (live stream) the readings to schools everywhere," she said. Thus far, the readings have taken place in the heart of the city at the Lillian H. Smith Public Library near College Street and Spadina Avenue. "Right now, we do the readings at the library and have the schools come to us," Lee said. "It would be great to be able to reach out more, but right now it’s just starting up and I’m still reaching out to schools at the Toronto District School Board." With cosy groups of 15 to 25 participants at the first couple of reading, the book club gives every girl a chance to speak up and

make sure their voice is heard in a safe and supportive environment. A Room of Your Own has benefited from the generosity of publishing houses and authors, many of whom have donated books and time to the cause. In some cases, however, there have been expenses involved which Lee has paid for out of pocket. A silent auction should help defray some of those costs, which include flying guest authors in from out of town and putting them up in accommodations. The silent auction, which features gift baskets from Mac Cosmetics, an iPad Mini, Kobo e-readers, a signed poster of Vin Diesel and more, takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion, 1083 Pape Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. For more information on A Room of Your Own, including how to get involved, email Lee at aroomofyourown@hotmail.com.

ABOUT US

Ontario one correction away from a debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn. It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario. At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet. The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, Senior Economist with RBC Robert Hogue said "tough medicine" is needed to tackle the debt. "Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent," he said. In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded, that coin comes from your pocket. To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt. Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket. We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a "hard target for debt to GDP ratio" that sits much lower than where we are now. However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces. The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces. Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave - generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.

Toronto Tamils ready to rebuild their homeland In a Scarborough banquet hall, I realized the civil war in Sri Lanka is truly over. Greater Toronto’s Tamil people came here because of that war. They’re the largest Tamil diaspora outside Sri Lanka, and helped make Scarborough, Markham and Richmond Hill what they are today. They came from a country where they felt the majority hated them, discriminated against them, and in many cases tried to kill them. The war ended in 2009 with scenes of horror, as trapped civilians and fighters died by the thousands. Twenty business owners from our Tamil community returned to Sri Lanka in March. They came back calling on others to rebuild

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto the island’s north and east, and to support the island’s government. During the war, people here would have called them traitors. Shaking hands with a Sri Lankan president, or with a Sri Lankan military commander as they did - was unthinkable. For many years, until the RCMP shut them down, the World Tamil Movement col-

lected in Scarborough and Markham for the Tamil Tigers and their breakaway state. Local businesses gave willingly, or unwillingly. The war was merciless. Here, thousands waved the Tiger flag at rallies or carried banners demanding a Tiger-led Tamil Eelam. No compromise seemed possible. In 2009, bombs were falling on aunts and cousins back home. Protesters in Toronto blocked the Gardiner Expressway. Afterwards, Tamils here elected a "transnational government" to keep the fight going. But Sri Lanka’s government changed in 2015. Separatist voices died away. Compromise, that most Canadian of values, has taken hold.

At their press conference, the business owners were candid. Both sides, they say, feel guilty about the war. They know it was a terrible mistake. "We, the diasporas, were the ones that helped fund the war for 35 years," adds Stan Muthulingam, the group’s co-chairperson. Certainly, justice must be done for any atrocities suffered by Tamils in Sri Lanka. But those who made the trip say reconstruction and development are needed now, and the island’s government needs investors. Eventually, war ends. Desire for revenge starts to end. People want to go home, to visit and to do business there again Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Together we can stop heavy rainfall, melting snow and runoff from ending up in your basement. At the City, we’re doing our part by continually updating and maintaining Toronto’s complex underground pipes, sewers and catch basins. Now it’s your turn. Here are some tips to help you flood-proof your home.

Fix cracks in your foundation.

Ensure the ground slopes away from your house.

Clear debris from eavestroughs and downspouts.

Install a sump pump to remove excess water.

Install a backwater valve to prevent water and sewage from backing up.

Divert your downspouts away from the foundation.

Community members, supporters, and local politicians gathered to celebrate the East End Children’s Centre’s No Child Turned Away campaign.

EECC celebrates expanded programming JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The East End Children’s Centre (EECC) is celebrating the success of its commitment to supporting young families in east Toronto. Recently, the centre launched the No Child Turned Away campaign in response to scores of children and families that were being turned away from its free Ontario Early Years Child and Family drop-in programs at Terry Fox Recreation Centre, 2 Gledhill Ave., and in the basement of Kimbourne Park United Church at 200 Wolverleigh Blvd. Faced with a significant increase in the child population in Toronto’s east end in the last decade, the room capacities at both EECC sites were being reached minutes after opening each day. Parents spoke out and the No Child Turned Away

campaign, which is part of EECC’s strategic plan for 2016 to 2021, was created. In the end, the community’s generosity resulted in programming being expanded to two extra mornings a week at East End Children’s Centre’s Kimbourne location. This expansion, which is the first one at EECC, has resulted in 100 more child visits each week. The expanded programming runs from January to April and in November and December. Community members, supporters, and local politicians celebrated this achievement over breakfast earlier this spring. At this time, there isn’t enough funding available to operate both EECC sites on a daily basis year round. However, the long-term goal is to make that dream a reality. "The child population in East Danforth increased by 49 per cent between 2008

and 2011, and continues to increase. We’re trying hard to keep up with the demand for programming," said Cathy Wright, the centre’s manager in an email to The East York Mirror."We’d love a partner from the business sector to step up and save the day." The East End Children’s Centre, which has the mandate of encouraging a connected community of parents and caregivers focused on the optimal development of children zero to six years of age, has served families in east Toronto for more than 30 years. Funded by the City of Toronto and Ontario Early Years, and governed by a community board of directors, the centre served more than 1,000 children and 1,000 parents/ caregivers in 2016. Visit www.eastendchildrenscentre.org or email eecc@rogers.com for more information.
