From Canada’s first female MP, Agnes MacPhail, to comedy legend John Candy, East York has been home to no shortage of beloved residents. Now, a new initiative aims to bring more attention to the people who make the community great. The East York Hall of Fame was officially launched on Monday, May 8, with a call for nominees to be inducted into the inaugural class later this year. Led by a dedicated group of East York volunteers, the Hall of Fame will not focus solely on famous residents. Instead, it will honour everyone from wellknown faces to student athletes to volunteers. "The East York Hall of Fame got started about 18 months ago when I was a guest of Coun. Jon Burnside to attend the Leaside Sports Hall of Fame banquet," said East Yorker Justin Van Dette, president of the East York Hall of Fame Association. "There was a strong feeling of a small town in the big city." Van Dette noted there would l See BRINGING, page 12

Surfing enthusiasts take to the waves of Lake Ontario year-round

| East York Mirror | Thursday, May 11, 2017

SURF’S UP! PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN GREAVES Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline. Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events. On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

Volunteers pack hundreds of purses JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A successful monthlong drive in east Toronto that saw new and gently used purses filled with personal hygiene items for vulnerable women has come to an end. On Saturday evening, two dozen volunteers made their way to the basement of Kimbourne Park United Church for a packing party for The Period Purse campaign. In total, volunteers packed 410 purses, which will be distributed to homeless, abused, and impoverished women across Toronto in the coming weeks. Growing Bodies and Minds at 183 Carlaw Ave., Ocean’s Treasure Fish Market at 565 Danforth Ave., Silly Goose Kids at

2054 Danforth Ave., and Curves at 1359 Woodbine Ave. served as the local drop-off points. Karen Bartlett, the owner/manager of Curves, heard about the local drive after reading an article in the East York Mirror and was eager to get involved. "We’re happy to support this great, local cause," she said at the packing party. "East York is a great community. The Period Purse is about women supporting women and that fits perfectly with what we’re all about at Curves." Area residents Rebecca Rabinovitch and Kate Dupuis both came forward to help co-ordinate the east Toronto campaign. "Everyone has just been so on board," said Dupuis, who has since signed on to serve as The Period Purse’s volunteer coordinator. "Kimbourne (Park United Church) said yes right away when we asked to use their space. All of our community partners have been

what she could do give back to women in need. "This is something that is so easy to do. It doesn’t take a lot of time or money but it makes a big difference," she said. Rabinovitch, who has lived near Pape and Danforth avenues for five years, said she’s humbled by the community’s kindness. "I’m speechless by how amazingly generous everybody is. We’re really grateful for the support," she said, adding she’s confident the purses will go to good use. Bloor West Village resident Jana Girdauskas created the grassroots campaign about three months ago. She never imagined the project would be so successful. "The generosity has been mind-blowing," she said at the packing party. With her work as a teacher, Girdauskas often drives around the city. Struck by the number of

street-involved and homeless women she saw, she decided to do something tangible to help. The concept for the Period Purse took off after Girdauskas put out a call for purses, menstrual products, and other personal hygiene items on a mom’s Facebook group in The Junction. To date, more than 1,100 purses have been collected and packed. Rogers, Proctor and Gamble, The Sock Project, Lush, and Stockyards Dental have been instrumental in the campaign’s success as they’ve all donated large quantities of much-needed items. The Period Purse campaign, which was launched on Family Day, has since expanded to Brantford, Durham Region, London, Niagara Region, Ottawa, Stratford, and Victoria, B.C. • OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special. This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait. The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way. For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others? Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11. After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year. Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others. These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city. Go online to www.urbanheroes.ca to nominate someone or to learn more.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away? Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion. And it probably won’t. Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park. Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet. At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street. True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto but it’s not too late, Tory said. City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes. "Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open. It won’t end. So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down. Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing. He’s sold on the idea. Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

and accountability. Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers. If that works, why stop? But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf. Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition. That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed. Definitely no gender issues during scary 911 incident On Monday night, when I opened my eyes, I found myself staring at the bathroom floor wondering how I got there. When I had gone to bed, everything was fine and later I had got up to go to the bathroom, as I often do. The next thing, I was hearing my wife calling 911 in a calm but very concerned voice. I didn’t have the strength to get up and I did a check to see if I could wiggle my fingers and toes, which I could. Soon, two young women from Toronto’s EMS came bounding up the stairs and began asking me questions about how I had ended up where I was. I was very impressed at how professionally they handled the situation and how well they cared for me. Frankly, I really didn’t know what had happened, and soon they had me

JOE COOPER Watchdog hooked up to an EKG machine and were checking out my heart and blood pressure. It was clear that I needed to go off to the hospital, and they asked if I could walk down the stairs by myself. I tried, but as soon as I stood up I was back down on the floor once again, so it was clear that they would have to carry me down. This they did, using a chair device I sat on. Both managed this on

their own while a group of firemen looked on, and I must say that I am not particularly lightweight. Then off to the hospital we went, where I was successful delivered to the emergency ward. Anyone who questions the ability of women to undertake any role today, no matter how physically demanding, is dead wrong. Frankly, the need for any debate is over and the two women who came to my assistance this week showed that very clearly. All that is needed today to be able to fully contribute to society is one’s inherent ability to do so.

be several categories in which to nominate possible honourees, including the return of the East York Bulldog Award for outstanding voluntarism, separate Athlete of the Year awards for elementary and secondary school aged children, and induction into the Hall of Fame itself. A jury will select winning nominees. "We’re leaving it up to people to impress us by nominating people who really make a big difference in the community," Van Dette said. Coun. Mary Fragedakis noted nominations would be open to more than just residents of East York, with former residents and those who play sports or volunteer for East York organizations also eligible. "We’re bringing our history to life, the history of East York," she said. "Celebrating and understanding

Dan Pearce/Metroland

East York Hall of Fame Association president Justin Van Dette our history is critical in creating a better tomorrow." In addition to honouring some of the community’s shining stars, the Hall of Fame will also serve to celebrate the former municipality of East York by highlighting its community spirit and bringing the old East York logo back to the fore. "I can think of no better way to dedicate our pride in our community and unending community spirit

than through the acknowledgement of excellence and esprit de corps that the Hall of Fame will instil in all of us," said Ray White of the East York Foundation, a community organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of East York and a key partner in the East York Hall of Fame. People are encouraged to select possible inductees and award winners at www.bestofeastyork.com, with no set deadline for the first round of nominees. Honourees will be recognized on the website, and Van Dette said the eventual hope is to have a physical space to recognize honourees in the East York Civic Centre. Nominations or donations to help fund the Hall of Fame can also be sent to Justin Van Dette of the East York Hall of Fame at PO Box 30003 RPO Woodbine Heights, 1500 Woodbine Ave., East York, Ont., M4C 5J2.

Stars will be standing up for a good cause on Saturday, May 13 as the Michael Garron Foundation presents its Laughter is the Best Medicine III comedy gala. The event, which will feature Saturday Night Live alumnus/Weeds star Kevin Nealon, takes place at the Beanfield Centre at Exhibition Place. Author and standup comedian Jim Gaffigan will serve as the evening’s head-

liner, while east Toronto native Will Arnett returns as the master of ceremonies. More than 1,200 guests are expected to attend the third annual comedy gala. "This isn’t your typical gala. It’s an evening of outstanding comedy and world-class food, for a great cause," said co-chair Michael Geddes in a recent release. "The event will also help to put a smile on the faces of more than half a

million people throughout the GTA who rely on Michael Garron Hospital for exceptional patient care." Proceeds from Laughter is the Best Medicine III, which is presented by BMO Financial Group, will be directed to the east Toronto hospital’s renewal and expansion as well as quality patient care. Visit www.laughteristhebestmedicine.ca for more details.

Environment days next week Two Community Environment Days are coming to Toronto’s east end this week. On Tuesday, May 16, Ward 31 Coun. Janet Davis will hold an event in the parking lot of the East York Memorial Arena, 888 Cosburn Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Ward 32 Coun. MaryMargaret McMahon’s Community’s Environment Day is set for Thursday, May 18 from 4 to 8 p.m.

in the parking lot of Ted Reeve Arena, 175 Main St. Community Environment Days aim to reduce the amount of reusable, recyclable and household hazardous waste going into landfill. They provide residents with a convenient place to drop off reusable and recyclable items like clothing, small appliances, non-perishable food, arts and craft

supplies, and sporting goods, among other things. People can also drop off household hazardous waste for safe disposal and obtain new green bins and kitchen containers. This year’s event will once again include shredding services and free compost. For more information, visit toronto.ca/environment_days or call 311.
